"Mixing in key" is a fairly popular method for track selection. Basically you want to find tracks that are "compatible" in a musical way. I've found that following the circle of fifths either clockwise or counterclockwise, always skipping 3, leads to some really astonishing results.

Here's an experiment, using counter-clockwise circle of fifths traversal on the song keys. Note that some tracks end in a different key than they start, so you always have to take that into account.

A Clavinet is an electrophonic keyboard instrument manufactured by the Hohner company. It is essentially an electronically amplified clavichord, analogous to an electric guitar. Its distinctive bright staccato sound has appeared particularly in funk, disco, rock, and reggae songs.

Each key uses a small rubber tip to perform a "hammer on" (forcefully fret the string) to a guitar-type string when it is pressed, as with a conventional clavichord. The end of each string farthest from the pickups passes through a weave of yarn. When the key is released, the yarn makes the string immediately stop vibrating. This mechanism is completely different from the other Hohner keyboard products, the Cembalet and Pianet, which use the principle of plectra or sticky pads plucking metal reeds.
Originally the instrument was designed for home use and aimed at playing early European classical and folk music. The Clavinet L, introduced in 1968 was a domestic model and featured a wood-veneered triangular body with wooden legs, reverse-colour keys and an acrylic glass music stand. Perhaps the most notable use of the Clavinet model C in modern music is on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Since then, the Clavinet C has been highly revered for its unique tone, able to cut through a mix and deliver a funky punch to any track.

]]> <![CDATA[David Crowder Band's "Rain Down"]]> http://matthuber.wordpress.com/?p=142 Thu, 22 May 2008 19:00:54 +0000 mattjhuber http://matthuber.wordpress.com/?p=142 Alright, me and another individual who frequents the blog are about to attempt to write a loop for David Crowder Band's "Rain Down".  I realize that this is a very daunting task (quite honestly, it scares me that I have committed to working on it...it is songs like this that make you feel incapable), so thought that it would be a good idea to ask if anyone has any bits and pieces of the song that they have already sequenced out and would like to contribute.

Let me know (either in the comments or emailing me at themonobox@gmail.com) if you have sequenced any of it out, or would like to assists in handling the workload!  If not, be keeping your eyes open; if things go well, you will probably see a loop for "Rain Down" pop up here on TheMonoBox within the next couple of weeks.  If nothing less, this will be an intense learning experience.

Also, I wanted to let you guys know that I am going to start working on finishing up the loop for Steve Fee's "Grace Will Be My Song" (as mentioned in the previous post).  You should be seeing that within the next several days.

In the mean time, I would like to draw to your attention, the new project I have been working on over the last few weeks. Transferring my production into a live format. I've been slaving away on Ableton Live, trying to set up a way of performing my music live. I wont get into the techy side of things now, but it's all turned out brilliantly, and I've got plans to take it as far as I possibly can.
I gigged the set out at Fresh Out The Box last Friday, which went down really well, but I didn't manage to record it, so this morning I knocked up a slightly shorter version of a very similar set. There's a few sketchy areas, but that's the magic of live recording isn't it. I've uploaded it, and I'm really looking for as much feedback as possible on it. As I'm so new to it, there's bound to be areas where I could do with a bit of constructive criticism, and of course, anyone who wants to tell me what a good job I've done is more than welcome to....
In terms of tracklisting, it's a bit vague, as the drums are interchanged throughout, and I guess the only distinguishing feature between the tracks is the basslines... It's a pretty good mix of my styles, a bit less down the glitchy avenue that my EP featured, and a bit more dancefloor orientated, as that is where this project is best executed, in loud dirty clubs.

    Today marks the day that somewhat of a transformation will take place -- over the next month or so, the blog will likely get a facelift and will no longer be a strictly personal blog, but rather a more general blog focusing on Ableton Live, Reason, Sampling, Music, Audio and related things in relation to the Christian faith.  I plan on having multiple contributors (Benji Robinson, Matt Monson, and others) who have specific areas of expertise.

    That being said, this site will henceforth be known as TheMonoBox.

    I'm sure the vision and direction of the blog will become more clear over time (especially as I find more time on my hands).  Please bear with us as we get things in order...its all somewhat of a mess right now...

    ]]>         <![CDATA[Lead Me to the Cross Loop]]> http://matthuber.wordpress.com/?p=131 Mon, 19 May 2008 00:38:40 +0000 mattjhuber http://matthuber.wordpress.com/?p=131 Alright, I was searching through some old stuff, and realized that me and a good friend of mine, Matt Monson, had created a loop for Hillsong United's "Lead Me to the Cross".  At that time, we didn't have anyone dedicated to either acoustic guitar or keys.  

    So, the loop includes acoustic, pads, shaker, and tambourine.  When we've used it live, it has always filled the song out quite nicely.  Sequences like these are nice because everyone can essentially stop playing to let the song breathe, and the sequence carries it very gracefully.

    The tempo is at 72 BPM and the key is A.  If you happen to have Ableton Live (which I recommend all of you get!), you can easily transpose this if you'd like to do so.
