Just in time for the July opening of the MAMMA MIA! movie, Universal Music is re-releasing the popul

Just in time for the July opening of the MAMMA MIA! movie, Universal Music is re-releasing the popular compilations ABBA Gold, More ABBA Gold and the 4 CD box set Thank You For The Music.

ABBA Gold and More ABBA Gold will be repacked in Super Jewel Boxes. Both have updated liner notes and booklets, especially More ABBA Gold, which was last available in 1999, still in its original 1993 format.

Thank You For The Music will be repackaged in a similar format to 2005's Frida 4xCD 1XDVD box set. It will contain new photographs and the same essays as the original 1994 set, with some "gentle" corrections.

The disc contents will feature the latest remastered versions of the songs.

Reaction to the news is typically split - some fans see the reissues as a "rip off of loyal fans", while others see them as repromoting ABBA for new markets.

ABBA Gold has reportedly sold 26 million copies to date, while MAMMA MIA! (the stage musical) has been seen by 30 million people - that's several million who have seen the musical who haven't bought ABBA's most popular CD. Many millions more will be seeing the movie in coming months, and may be inspired to go in search of the original ABBA songs.

I think that anything that spreads ABBA music to new audiences is a good thing.

ABBA Gold and More ABBA Gold are released at the end of May. Thank You For The Music is released in early June.

Anni-frid, Benny, Bjorn, and Agnetha. Is their music reminiscent of the best trends in late-70

Anni-frid, Benny, Bjorn, and Agnetha. Is their music reminiscent of the best trends in late-70's'/early 80's dance music, or cheesier than a vat of fondue? I'm on the fence, but I'm willing to bet that you, discerning reader, are not...

THUMBS UP: It's with good reason that Abba have sold more than 370 million (!) records worldwide - their music speaks a hip-shaking universal language that says "How can you still be sitting?" Consequently, their songs - even the cheesy ones - have an infectious groove that helped define a particular era, but can still fill the dancefloor. The group has enjoyed an enduring, cross-generational popularity that's entirely due to the quality and effectiveness of the silly dance songs on Abba Gold. One could argue that Abba were pioneering in their use of synthesizers, but this group isn't about technical achievement, they're about pure, booty-shaking fun.

THUMBS DOWN: On September 8, 2007, the residents of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, set the record for the world's largest fondue. The record-setting dish was served in a fondue pot that weighed more than 1,000 pounds and was capable of holding more than 2,500 pounds of bubbling cheese. And yet, the amount of cheese on display that historic day was a pittance compared to what is contained within the plasticine grooves of Abba Gold. While it sports a handful of classic dance tracks, the majority of the album features stiff, programmed beats and silly, operatic harmonizing that have caused the group to become synonymous with... well, you know. Fon du Lac, you've met your match.

[This is an impassioned plea for your participation. If you believe in life, liberty, and the love of music, then make your opinion of Abba known...]

ABBA GOLD - Greatest Hits.

At the time the CD was released, it had been almost ten years since ABBA had come to an end. General interest in the band had declined, though a dedicated worldwide fan base continued to love ABBA and enjoy their music.

It’s astounding that this simple compilation CD, which at the time seemed to be just another in a long line of quickly thrown together ABBA CDs that had flooded the market over the previous ten years, would kickstart a global revival and reevaluation of the band, and would become not only ABBA’s biggest selling album, but one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

The revival had actually been building up over the previous five years, with ABBA music playing in trendy clubs, theme nights, and a growing fan club. But the release of the compilation, along with Erasure’s cover EP Abba-esqueand the international break-through of tribute band Björn Again, saw the revival explode to the general population.

The premise is simple - 19 ABBA hits on one single CD.

I’ve never been a particular fan of the compilation. The running order seems fairly random and arbitrary. There are at least two songs that don’t really belong as they don’t fit into the context of “ABBA’s greatest hits” - ’Lay All Your Love On Me’ (a limited release 12 inch single) and ‘Thank You For The Music’ (a single A side in just a few countries, mostly to promote compilation albums in 1983). International chart-topping hits ‘Ring Ring’, ‘I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do’ or ‘Summer Night City’ seem better qualified for inclusion.

Still, ABBA GOLD has been a phenomenal success, having sold something like 26 million copies and introducing a whole new generation of ABBA fans.

It was sort of inevitable that at some point after going to Scandinavia I would be praising ABBA. It's in the water or something. Nah, but everyone my age back home makes fun of ABBA because it is so sappy or upbeat. I will agree with that to some degree, but it's also very melancholy in a subtle way. Like, you'd think it's just disco music for slow teens, but it really isn't. This stuff exudes a deeper quality that's only found in spectacularly good pop songwriters like Elton John, Queen, or even Judas Priest. They write songs that reflect really endearing, bittersweet emotions that are accessible and intrinsic to childhood but the tunes still manage to retain their full potency as you age. It's quite impressive, because you can hear this stuff when you're a kid and find it just as accessible as when you're an adult.

I would use that as a qualifier for what makes good pop music. Does it appeal to kids? The first songs I remember consciously liking were Michael Jackson songs from the '80s and Queen's Greatest Hits. However, it would seem that most popular music is marketed toward specific stylistic niches. I would like to think the bands I mentioned transcend such a demographic limitation (you have to remember, Judas Priest basically invented the whole metal-leather genre association. It wasn't an established fashion archetype until they became popular.).

I don't like what passes as dance music these days. I think digitally over-produced club beats are obnoxious and unmusical. But ABBA's stuff was recorded before they had digital studio standards, so even the recording is really charming, because it's cutting-edge for the 1970s (the drums are incredible, really) and the synth sounds they use are gorgeous. Also, for pop-singers the girls are awesome. Like, they hit the right notes, have nice voices, have charming accents, plus - this is the important part - they never ever go off and do that stupid Aguilera/Beyonce, post-post-Motown, Generation Y vocal soloing/masturbation (you know what I'm talking about!).

I know most of you are thinking, "ABBA sucks, bands like Blur/Radiobrain/Muse/[random-weepy-cowardly-music-for-giving-up] are so much better." And I'm sure I have a bunch of friends who will say ABBA sucks before they actually listen to it. It's really too bad, because every last one of you is wrong times, like, a million. I don't have solipsist musical tastes (or do I?), but I am extremely interested in investigating how deeply inspired musicians and artists are. So I don't care what genre or time or style they emanate from. Quality burns/shines into the next world.

I guess I approach this stuff from a composer's direction sometimes and "forget" that a lot of people listen to music for different and personal reasons (Notice that I'm really restraining myself in analyzing other people's taste here *bites fist*). ABBA's music is not like a lot of [modern] pop music, in that it is not saying you should hump at a club with a bunch of scanty girls because "dancing is fun". I don't think ABBA applies to this, even in songs like "Dancing Queen". I don't even think ABBA is aimed at teenagers.

Because: The problem with the world is that everyone behaves like a teenager (and consequently doesn't like ABBA*). Everyone wants to have sex, do drugs, and get rich. Well excuse me, but: Zzzzzz.... ABBA is for people who aren't damaged and tricked into following such shallow pursuits.

Watch this performance of "Waterloo". This is one of the finest pop songs and live pop performances ever. No joke at all.

But just when you think it can't get any better: A performance of "Waterloo" on German TV -- in typically harsh German! ZOMIGOSH!!

Someone you know owns ABBA Gold. Trust me, someone does. Everyone does. You do. You're listening to it now. Gold and Queen's Greatest Hits I are the two finest hit song collections manifesting in temporal space-time.

____

ABBA also did albums in German and Spanish, despite being from Sweden (?!).

*I'm lying because everyone actually loves ABBA. Even your mom. It's the plain truth.
