My recipe is clear: Invest in tourism development. While traditional industry jobs has reduced considerably, jobs within tourism increased by 20% between 1997-2004 and the growth is expected to continue. Tourism is, compared to other types of business, employment intensive. Turnover per employee is low. You need only 1,4 million SEK (~US$ 200,000) to create a tourism job, while the car industry requires 3.3 MSEK (~US$ 460,000) and Telecom 4.4 MSEK (US$ 620,000) to do the same.

Tourism, in contrast to other industrys, cannot be relocated. The “product” has to be consumed locally, where it is produced. It´s a growth industry. Tourism jobs are also an excellent gateway to the labour market for youths, the low educated or immigrants – groups that traditionally are facing difficulties to get a first job in Sweden.

Incoming tourism is even more important. It´s the only industry paying a direct VAT income to Sweden, in addition to foreign tourists generally higher expenditure. Tourists in Sweden spent SEK 191 Billion 2005 (~US$ 27 Bn). It equals the energy industry. SEK 62 Billion (~US$ 8,7 Bn) came from incoming tourism. Beats the car industry. Iron & Steel. Wood products. In fact, the export value of Swedish tourism outperforms total Swedish exports. Still, most of Sweden is more or less unknown to people abroad according to a number of recent studies.

Financial crisis? Put the money where the mouth is.

The Weatherman speaks quickly on the reported rumours regarding ABB and Koch linking up.  From all I know it doesn't seem to me that a pairing such as this would be a bad thing but I don't know all the details so I'm less than qualified to speak on it.  I do think it would get Ev's forthcoming Cats & Dogs LP a lot more shine due strictly to the higher level of distribution and promotion it would receive.

Confusing? Well, there is a relaxed atmosphere at most companies. We´re not so formal or hierarchical. Most managing directors are openly available to the employees. They can address almost any question directly to him/her. I would say there is a casual overall feeling at work. There is a chain of command of course, but it´s not so often put into practice. A manager in Sweden has to motivate and engage his staff rather than give orders. In general, we tend to put more efforts in reaching compromises when it comes to make a decision.

The consensus process
It´s called förankringsprocessen, the consensus process, and it aims to get people involved. Everyone get a chance to discuss an issue and everyone listens. Then we compromise. Everybody gets something, not too much and not too little, but lagom (se my posting on that). As a result, decisions and solutions are deeply worked through. Ultimately, the employees feel they have been part of the process and therefore more motivated to do a better job. So when you´ve had a meeting with managers Anna, Lisa & Kalle at your Swedish partners office, you probably end up in another meeting before any real decisions are made - because in the meantime they have to check what Björn, Anders & Catharina think about it.

Just be aware that it may take some time, compared to decision-making in other countries.

Om några timmar så startar de olympiska spelen. Jag kommer inte att titta på en enda timme OS. Det är min personliga protest mot det tystande som pågår ang de förhållande som Tibetaner lever under. De har inskränkt religionsfrihet. Befolkning tvångsförflyttas. Kina fortsätter begå brott mot de grundläggande mänskliga rättigheterna.

Självklart ska det Kinesiska folket få glädjas åt spelen där är jag helt enig med hans helighet Dalai Lama. Det är den högsta politiska ledningen som ska påverkas via de kanaler som finns tillgängliga.

Vi har bevittnat hur Tibetanernas protester slås ner och munkar tar till våld som en sista utväg för att bli lyssnade på. Frågan är komplex och ger man sig in i debatten så är det bäst att vara påläst. Läser i the guardian om två aktivister från England som blev utvisade från Kina då de protesterat. Det är trist och jag ragerar med att ta ett djupt andetag för att hämta krafter.

Jag har inga bra argument just nu mer än att jag värnar om tibetanernas integritet och kulturella arv. Och jag gärna skulle se våra stora svenska företag vara lite mer offensiva då det kommer att göra påtryckningar om de mänkliga rättigheterna i Kina. Förmodligen görs det mycket i det tysta som inte kommer till vår kännedom. Dvs den tysta diplomatin.

En eloge ska ges till de idrottsmän som gått ut i ett gemensamt brev till den Högsta politiska ledningen i Kina. Emma Green, Alhaji Jeng och Johan Wissman.

När jag hörde och läste om detta igår så applåderade jag och fick tårar i ögonen.

Vilket mod och de gör det trots vetskapen att det kanske blir någon form av reaktion från Kina. Samt att de visar att de är privatpersoner som tar ställning i en  viktig fråga.

Men var är rösterna från de företag som verkligen skulle kunna göra skillnad. Ericsson är ju en stora aktörerna på den Kinesiska marknaden och jag hoppas verkligen att de sätter press på Kineserna angående de mänskliga rättigheterna och censuren. Eller är det i själva verket så att Ericsson bidrar till cencuren.

Det här med corporate responsibility ska jag forska i under de veckor spelen pågår. Upp till bevis nu SAAB, Ericsson, ABB, VOLVO, SCANIA och andra svenska företag som gör affärer i Kina.

On Wednesday, I entered ABB at 28.56. On Thursday, the stock gapped down due to earnings below expectations and a slowing European market. While this gap is part of the risk I take, I should have exited the trade immediately in the morning. Instead I attended to some unexpected personal matters. I finally got out of the trade on Friday morning at a price of 26.74. This meant a loss of 6.3%.

While I hate to loose, life and the market goes on. Moreover, I have to put the loss into perspective of the cumulative performance of 48 percent in one month. There is certainly enough reason to celebrate. Here the picks I described in the various blogs:

However, none of them were correct about the margin of votes. That is the problem about predictions - on TV you need to predict that "the markets will go down" - to make money you need to be far, far smarter than that. Simple, you need to get the direction, speed, intensity ALL correct every time. This is not just difficult, it is impossible.

If there are 542 Members of Parliament,  and they do represent the country, it is fair that some of them (most) of them will be  honest, some dishonest, some will have criminal intentions, and some of them will be actual criminals. If 5 of them are criminals - it is only being representative, is it not? The media however plays some much on our minds about the negative elements that it would like us to believe that all Parliamentarians are criminals. It is not so, not by a mile. The media should show some restraint and not chase TRP so desperately. It sucks.

Impact on the market because of the trust vote can at best be marginal - buy on rumors and sell on news - so today (23 July) the market may actually give up some of the gains that it built yesterday and earlier! That is the market. Also the market would surely have known that the congress would be returned safe.

The nuclear deal is of course a superb market story...if India sign the nuclear treaty TODAY, it will mean Indian companies can start talking about nuclear power. Then the government of India will have to come up with the guidelines - eligibility, criteria, locations, financial safeguards, physical safeguards etc. Given out track record this will take about 2 years. Once that is out, and say Tata Power, NTPC, National Nuclear Power Corporation are the 3 companies which are "eligible" for nuclear power. They will then scout for partners - the whole process will take 1 year to become a JV.

Then they will choose a location - remember Tatas could not put a car plant so easily, so a nuclear plant (thank you Green Peace) will not be the easiest thing in life! So add 5 years to set up the plant. Then that plant has to go critical - generate power. This will be then sold and the cost  (incurred in crores) will be now recovered from end users -  frankly I think the impact on the  EPS will be felt  after about  12 years, but we will buy now. What will we buy ? We will buy Areva, Tata Power, Esab, L&T, NTPC - because the nuclear deal is done....hoping that the next quarter will see an upsurge in earnings. God bless us.
