We woke up bright and early only to discover that... our guide was late! This had me fuming throughout the bus trip up from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. (Punctuality is such an issue for me! We missed the first bus which we had wanted to take to avoid the crowds!) After sulking for twenty minutes, I decided to confront our guide instead of keeping silent and I realised it was some miscommunication. Nevertheless, I think I expressed my displeasure (quite fairly I think) and I'm glad that I was firm on this point. (Poor Miaosy had to put up with my grumpy face though!)

Views of the quarry and the agrarian area

After a morning tour of the city, we were undecided about whether to climb the very forbidding looking Wayna Picchu (Young Mountain in Quecha language, as opposed to Machu Picchu which means Old Mountain) We finally decided that given the limited time we had, we preferred to head off to Intipunku (Sun Gate) which is further away in distance but a gentler climb!

One of the many rests on the way... (I look so fat by the way!)On the way back later, we hid a hexagonal YX-Ning-Forever rock into the partial ruins for ourselves to find when we came back maybe 20 years later with our twins to do the Incan trail!

Finally there! See how little Machu Picchu looks in the distance!

Machu Picchu from the trail... Some facts about the Sun Gate, it's where we would have caught our first view of Machu Picchu if we were doing the Incan trail. On some particular day, it's where the sunlight would come through and shine on Machu Picchu as well. The amazing thing, all the trails that we took were originally laid by the Incans! I am still impressed.

After the trek to and from the Sun Gate, we spent a quiet hour or so just revelling in the beauty and tranquility of the place. Before I saw Machu Picchu, I was worried that the place may be so over-hyped that the real experience cannot live up to my expectations... But it's far bigger, far more impressive and imposing than I imagined.

After making our way back down to Aguas Calientes, we had a quick lunch before catching the train back to Cuzco. Unfortunately, we had the yucky back-facing seats this time... Oh well!

I miss Miaosy!!!
