Duffy has made a name for herself in England with her debut album Rockferry, a 60s throwback to Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield. In fact, some critics think she does this better than Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone. In her new video covering the Hendrix song "Stepping Stone," she will take a nude turn in bed. She acts out a fantasy of being a 60s songstress who gets seduced in a nightclub. You have to wonder if she is actually fantasizing about being in the Jimi Hendrix sex tape instead. Perhaps that fantasy seducer is really Jimi.

Her PR is saying that the video will be classy and tasteful, however. I guess they are trying to say that Duffy does not want to go into the Wino territory of lewd and crude. Thank God for that one. But will she ever be as popular as Winehouse?

Grandes y salvajes.

My annual pilgrimage to Cincinnati means catching up on U.S. culture, affording my 1st grader qualit

My annual pilgrimage to Cincinnati means catching up on U.S. culture, affording my 1st grader quality time with his grandparents and respite for me from the pressures of a single-mom lifestyle in Tel Aviv.

Last Saturday my father, mother and I bumped into one another while out shopping and we headed out together for a leisurely lunch. When our conversation turned to the topic of my former San Francisco neighbor - an arthritic septuagenarian who recruited me to help her in the garden - I reminisced: "There was always something going on at Miss Mayes’ house.”

The three-story, 1900’s Edwardian pulsed with the energy of adult children, grandchildren, business clients or church ladies stopping by for visits or consultations. On quiet days Gloria joined me in the garden. “Don’t pull those up!” she would scold. They’re plants, not weeds!” When she wasn’t teaching the finer points of horticulture, Gloria shared.

Tales of raising thirteen children and grandchildren, of organizing church socials versus rollicky younger days, of community volunteering and a troubled marriage, of her son lost to gang warfare and of her growing up years in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

“One time,” I narrated between bites, “she told me about a white clerk who wouldn't hand her the change after a purchase. The woman put it on the counter and actually told her she wasn't about to touch her!”

My parents clucked. My father, a 'Northerner' son of Polish immigrants, grew up in an urban enclave, traveling south to New Orleans’ Charity Hospital for his medical internship. “I’ll never forget the first time I treated a person of color. I came into ‘The Colored Ward’ and said ‘Good afternoon, Mr. Jones,’ to a patient. The attending was furious. ‘You don’t call him Mister. He’s boy.’ I was shocked,” my father relayed.

My father grew up during the post-WWII era of extreme prejudice. But he was raised to know better because, as the Jewish immigrant son of non-English speaking parents, he was also a product of unfounded bias.

Over lunch he reminisced about being in a popular downtown Cincinnati ice-cream parlor with my mother as desegregation was being instituted. “In walked a couple,” he shared. “And the manager went from table to table putting out little notes: ‘We’re sorry but By Law we Have to Serve Them.’ I said: ‘To hell with you!’ and walked out.”

Unlike my father, I didn’t experience 60’s riots, separate hospital wings or protest marches. My youth was marked by a different type radical change: the post-Vietnam War flower power and love child period characterized by equality-invokers like my third grade math teacher Ms. Martin. Ms. M. kicked off each daily session with a lusty round of Three Dog Night’s: “The Ink is Black, The Page is White, Together We Learn to Read and Write. . .”

Nonetheless, I wasn’t immune to what was going on in my world. There were painful memories of the lone girl of color in my private school class of twelve who didn’t get invited to birthday parties and in later years, while interning at WLWT News, there was the day Clyde Gray first anchored the midday broadcast. An uber-mensch and gentleman, Clyde was one of the significant mentors in my formative professional years; we remain in contact to date.

Manning the assignment desk phones that day, I was stunned when a random twangy-voiced caller on the other end of the receiver shouted: “That’s all we need is another (expletive) on television!”

Stunned and too green to know what to do, I passed the call to then-reporter Jeff Hirsh. "Uh Jeff? I think you'd better talk to this person." The caller apparently repeated herself, Jeff cursed loudly into the receiver and then slammed it down. Jeff and I were red-faced & ashamed. We never discussed it and we never told Clyde.

This week, as an estimated 9000 NAACP Conference-goers pulled into Cincinnati, I noted Clyde’s image in Cincinnati's Sunday paper alongside that of Mayor Mallory, school superintendent Rosa Blackwell, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and ninety-four other influential area African Americans. Campaigning presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain are both putting in conference appearances.

“I’m glad you’re alive to see all this,” I told my parents after lunch. During their lifetime, more than mine, much has changed. These are exciting times for all of us. And I’m glad to be here in the U.S. and in Cincinnati to witness the change.

Artist: Movin' Melvin Brown

Title: Love on My Mind

They don't make them like Movin' Melvin Brown anymore. Brown is a welcome throwback to the Golden Age of soul music, when sultry crooners such as Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Smokey Robinson healed a country aching from the bloodshed of the Vietnam War with their soothing, passionate singing. Of course, these type of vocalists never really went away, just became scarce and, whenever you would hear anybody remotely comparable, the production would be too cold and slick. Not so with Brown. Nearly every track on this CD sounds like it could've been recorded during the late '60s-early '70s creative peak of Motown.

The title track is an epic (at 5:53!) slow-dance number with sensual bass lines (for the ladies, of course) pulsating below Brown's yearning vocals. "The Girl Is" picks up the tempo, revealing Brown's Motown ambitions with its vintage R&B rhythms. "Smooth Situation" and "Nothing Else But Love" find Brown in purely funk territory without drowning out his voice's bedroom appeal. The production is fairly raw throughout; however, in this that's perfect because you want these tracks to feel authentic, to make believe they're from the glorious era which inspired their creation.

Across the Universe (2007)
Directed by: Julie Taymor
Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson
Rated: PG-13
Runtime: 133mins

Julie Taymor delivers a visually stunning film that's a treat for both the eyes and the ears. Situated in the 60's, Beatles songs are incorporated into a movie to help enhance the telling of a love story admidst the historic events of the era. Jude (Jim Sturgess) is a young man from Liverpool, England who arrives in America seeking his absentee father. He finds him as well as a new friend, Max (Joe Anderson). Max is a free spirit stifled by his rich family expectations and after a heated Thanksgiving, he and Jude head to New York City. When Max's sister, Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), comes for a visit, her and Jude embark on a relationship that is tested by the times.

Just to make it clear, this is a musical. Think "Moulin Rouge" over "The Sound of Music", though. The songs used receive a revamp and are paired with spectacular scenes; the two really compliment and bring each other to life. All the characters have great voices and don't feel like they are just re-iterating a song. They put good emotion into their voices. I really enjoyed Jim Sturgess's performance and was surprised by Evan Rachel Wood. Though I suppose it shouldn't be too much of a surprise as a good number of actors out there can sing; they just don't usually get to do so unless they try to do a dual career.

Taymor tries to bring out the psychadelic nature of the 60's and does a fabulous job. There are very strange and surreal moments all throughout the movie, such as the scene when Max answers his draft call, during "I am the Walrus" and during the circus segment with Eddie Izzard. Vivid colors, visual special effects, camera work that makes the movie feel more like a music video, all this combines to make the viewer feel like he/she is on a trip. Taymor also a great job in using the visuals to convey the perspective and emotions running through the characters and reflecting the general social opinion of that era.

Bono's cameo was quite impressive. I have to say he does a fantastic job at faking an American accent, acting and, of course, singing.

Overall, I loved this movie. I liked the characters and actually cared about what happened to them. I loved the music, the visuals, everything. It did get a little too weird for me in some places but I was still engrossed. The circus scene with Eddie Izzard as a ring master was a bit creepy, mainly because I'm not a big circus person; clowns freak me out (thank you Stephen King's "It").

Go out today and rent it, preferably in Blu-ray as it deserves to be seen in the highest quality possible.

That’s what my wife would like to know whenever I gripe about The Dumbest Generation. Because

That's what my wife would like to know whenever I gripe about The Dumbest Generation. Because, I say, it has legitimate points. Just because the author seems like a jerk at times, doesn't mean there isn't anything valuable in what he's written. Also, I've only got a few pages more to go, and seems lame to bale now, right.

In the second to last chapter the author harkens back to the 60s, where he sees the beginning of the problem that he's detailed previously. Adults of all ilks, from teachers to parents to scholars to journalist etc, gave far too much credence and importance to the youth of the country, who at the time were quite lively and outspoken. From there the problem only got worse and today is fast approaching epdidemic proporations, if it hasn't already.

I guess I object to the fear mongering, while he seems to offer little in way of a curative. Except the standard stuff -- read more, go to museums, engage in civic life, learn history. Who hasn't been saying this shit for like fucking ever? I heard it when I was kid. And I say it now. So what was the point of wasting the paper to say it again?

Oh yeah. That's right. The dude has statistics. But I ran across an interesting quote in Don Dellilo's novel, White Noise, that I think offers some perspective:

But I only said, "Terrifying data is now an industry in itself. Different firms compete to see how badly they can scare us."

White Noise, by the way, is an excellent book, better than I'd expected, although I hadn't expected it to be not good, just, I guess, beyond my comprehension. Sort of like Thomas Pynchon. I want to like his stuff but mostly I just don't get it. Same with more recent Rick Moody, among others.

I guess my point is that the dude seem like a hysteric. Have I said this already? Probably. What does it matter?

Anyway. I'll be done with the book soon enough and I can finally shut up about it. Thank jebus!

A couple of weeks ago I sat by a girl on the bus to work who was thrilled with the essence of licorice floating around me. Okay...I admit it...I'm addicted to Altoids Licorice Mints. I gave her one which she thought was rather strong and then proceeded to tell me she was a hippie. That took me back aways...growing up in the 60's and early 70's gave me a pretty good look at what being a hippie was all about and I can't say that it was all that great. Most friends I had that could be classified as "hippies" often smelled to high heaven and never knew where their next meal or bed was. To top it all off most of them are now part of the "system" they so adamantly detested in those days. Of course I didn't tell this gal any of that...I respect her right to experiment and taste life as she sees fit. But I wonder how others my age feel about those "happy days" when love was free and pot was the rage. What do you think about being a hippie? Is the tribal culture associated with Burning Man the true "old hippie" retirement culture? Were you a hippie and if you were are you still anti-establishment or part of the establishment?

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Tuesday 15th July):

Birth

1947. Roky Erickson (Thirteenth Floor Elevators) born Roger Erkynard Erickson in Dallas, Texas.

On Stage

1973. At the end of The Kinks concert at London's White City, Ray Davies announces he's quitting the music biz with the words, "Goodbye for ever". Davies has been in an unstable condition following the recent break-up of his 8 year marriage to wife, Rasa. Earlier in the month he was taken to the Whittington Hospital in Highgate to have his stomach pumped following a suspected overdose of sleeping pills.

In Council Chambers

1966. The Greater London Council Licensing Committee turns down the application for renewal of a music license for the London Hospital Tavern in Whitechapel Road, Tower Hamlets, after complaints from the adjoining hospital. The committee hears from Mr. Anthony Hills of the London Hospital that there were 100 seriously ill patients whose recoveries were being hindered by the sound of loud pop music. The "crushing beat of banjos and drums" is heard between 9 and 11 p.m. when hospital staff are trying to settle patients for the night. Miss June Swann, the hospital's Night Superintendent, said that recently they had to contend with the the sound of a "harsh, coarse female singer's voice". Mr. Gerald Tressider, consultant surgeon, said there were times when "even sedation had not been adequate" to deal with the noise. He recounted the tale of one patient so upset by the noise that it needed three porters to hold him down prior to being moved to a quieter ward.

In Hospital

1998. Joey Kramer (Aerosmith) suffers burns to his arm, hand and leg as his Ferrari convertible explodes into flames when he is filling up at a petrol station near Scituate, south of his hometown of Boston. The car is destroyed but Kramer escapes serious injury. He is taken to an emergency room in a nearby hospital and is released after treatment for second degree burns. Several days later, Aerosmith announce that they are postponing 13 dates of their tour due to start on August 14. The tour will now begin on September 9th.

Death

2007. Kelly Johnson, guitarist and vocalist with Girlschool dies from cancer of the spine.

At long last it's done! There's now one page on Rockmine with all of the video clips that I've included in the blog - apart from the dozen or so that have disappeared. That's 111 clips! It's searchable by artist and genre and will be by programme very soon. Hopefully you'll find this a really useful resource and an enjoyable place to spend some time.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Monday 14th July):

Birth

1952. Chris Cross (Ultravox) born Christopher St. John in London, England.

On Stage

1964. Film-maker Kit Lambert is at The Railway Hotel in Harrow to see The High Numbers play their Tuesday residency. He and his business partner, Chris Stamp have been keen to make a film about the new pop music scene but couldn't afford to pay any established band. So, they hit upon the idea of discovering their own group and filming its rise to stardom. Before the month is out, Lambert and Stamp will become the group's manager. By November, The High Numbers will have reverted to one of their previous names, The Who (they were also The Detours).

In Custody

1978. Mick Jones (The Clash), Clash sound-man Dave Jacobs and two members of Suicide are arrested after the local Drugs Squad raid their rooms at the Saxon Motor Inn, Blackburn, Lancashire in the early hours of the morning. Both bands had played at the town's St. George's Hall last night. All four men were taken to a local police station for questioning but released after a few hours. Various substances, found on or about the four, were retained for analysis.
Suicide's luck continued in a downward path later in the day when they were dumped from their gig at Bury St. Edmunds. Despite rumours that this related to their arrest, organisers insisted that their exclusion was due to a late running order. The Clash, of course, played as planned.

Talking of which, it was much rumoured that Bob Dylan would be in Bury to see The Clash strut their stuff. In reality, he opted for the musical, "Evita" in London.

In Court

1989. In Manhattan Family Court, Tom Jones (49) loses a paternity suit brought against him by Katherine Berkery (26) who had a four day sex romp with him at a New York hotel in 1987. She hasn't seen the singer since he left her in 1987, despite trying to contact him over the birth of the baby.

A blood test ordered by the court proved that Jones, who was not in court, was the father of the baby and the judge ordered him to make immediate payments of £ 200 a month to care for one year old Jonathan. The lawyers will be back in court in September to finalise the level of support. Berkery's attorney, Raoul Felder (who handled Robin Givens' divorce from Mike Tyson last year) will be seeking £ 2,000 a week. After the case was over, Katherine revealed that the singer's lawyers had offered her $ 50,000 to drop the case.

On Television

1982. Late Night With David Letterman (CBS, U.S.A.) Musical guest: Pete Best

Death

1980. Malcolm Owen lead singer of The Ruts dies from a heroin overdose in the bath at his mother's house.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Friday 18th July):

Birth

1946. Tim Lynch (The Flamin' Groovies) born in San Francisco, California.

On Tour

1972. The Rolling Stones arrive in Boston but after a scuffle at the airport, Mick Jagger, Marshall Chess and film-maker Robert Frank are charged with obstructing police officers and Keith Richards is charged with assaulting a photographer and a journalist. With the band playing Boston's Garden Theater tonight, the city's mayor, Kevin White, bails them out of jail. The band hits the stage two hours late but no-one seems to care. The mayor is given a standing ovation by the audience.

In Politics

1972. Frank Sinatra appears before the U.S. House Crime Select Committee in Washington, D.C. and accuses it of irresponsibly letting a convicted felon "bandy his name about". He told the packed hearing that it was "character assassination" and said they should have immediately refuted claims, made during the testimony of Joseph "The Baron" Barboza, that the singer was a front-man for the Mafia in the Fontainbleau and Sands hotels in Miami and Las Vegas. Joseph Phillips, counsel for the committee, said that Barboza made the allegations when he was being asked about unrelated matters, without any prompting.

In Court

1966. William Oliver Smedley, 54, an accountant and former vice-president of the Liberal Party, appears in court at Saffron Walden, Essex, charged with the murder of Reginald Calvert, 37, head of the Radio City pop radio station. Smedley is reported to have sparked the incident on the night of 19th June, when he and a boarding party visited the old wartime fort at Shivering Sands, where the radio station is based. They immobilized the transmitter and left some men to guard it. It's thought the action was taken to stop the sale of the radio station to an American company. As a result, Calvert had visited Smedley at home on June 21st. Smedley said he feared for his life and admitted to police that he shot Calvert. Mr. Peter Palmes, prosecuting, said that the only weapon Calvert carried was a small tear gas pen. The hearing continues tomorrow.

On Television

1975. The Midnight Special (NBC, U.S.A.) 125. Host: Helen Reddy. Guests: Mac Davis; Minnie Riperton; Waylon Jennings; Steve Martin; Joe Simon. Here's Minnie Riperton with "Lovin' You".

Death

1966. Bobby Fuller's body is found in his parked car in Los Angeles. He had been badly beaten and had been forced to swallow gasoline which killed him. Strangely, the police put the 22 year old's death down to suicide and a coroner's report, which ignored the bruising, agreed. It was only later after an investigation that details of the true circumstances were revealed. Rumours circulating at the time suggested that he'd been having an affair with the wife of a mafia gangster.

“Here am I sitting in a tin can

“Here am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do.”

Angela was searching through the onscreen menu of TV viewing options last night and concluded

Angela was searching through the onscreen menu of TV viewing options last night and concluded "there's nothing on." Instead of turning it off, she punched the select button on an old episode of "ER." As the show droned on through one critical patient's delimma after another, I became intrigued with the overall theme of that episode.

Apparently, the head physician in charge of the ER, Dr. Kerry Weaver, discovered her long lost birth mother. Her mom was a born-again Christian whose life had been turned around by her faith in the Lord Jesus. She gave as clear a testimony as you could expect from a secular TV show. The mom even sang in a choir in which we, the viewing audience, were privileged to hear a beautiful rehearsal of the old song, "Just As I Am."

As the show unfolded, Dr. Weaver revealed her lesbianism to her mom and chided her for a faith that wasn't freeing but restrictive and unaccepting of her "true self." I was shocked to see such a blatant attack on Christianity and even more amazed at the arrogance of such writing. Dr. Weaver told her mother that she didn't want her love if it didn't come also with the acceptance of who she was, and that if God did love her, He would accept her just as she was.

As I was watching this ideology come to light via this show, my first thought was "no wonder we have so many people today who have bought into the so-called 'gay agenda.' It was being force-fed them through almost every mainline TV in America during that era. The kids who grew up through this barrage of pro-homosexual propaganda would naturally see the religious person as a closed-minded and uncaring spiritual snob who refused to accept people unlike themselves.

My second thought was even more penetrating. How can we share the life changing gospel of Jesus Christ with a generation that has been brainwashed to believe we are the enemy of enlightenment?

Truth has taken a beating in this last generation - my generation. We grew up in the sixties with the idea that conventional mores were nothing more than an oppressive Christian religion withholding the exciting from us because it knew it would lose us if we were ever freed from isuch restrictive tentacles.

Unfortunately, there are so very few genuine Christian apologeticists who have the intelligence to stand toe to toe with the anti-religious crowd and present a compelling antithesis to their tripe. We have been losing ground by default. We lost in the election of the public mind not because we aren't right but because we failed to run a viable candidate!

Don't get me wrong, here. We have many who hold solidly to Biblical Christianity yet without the deep understanding of our faith so as to allow the deconstruciton of it in an argument and who have the ability to reconstruct it once again in perfect harmony, on the fly. That's what it will take to refute the so-caled enlightened crowd and share the gospel with this emerging generation.

Today's skeptic is not like previous versions. They have been craftily indoctrinated with positions they hold dear and think true. Yet, for all their claims of openness, they haven't honestly studied all sides or carefully weighed all arguments. They began with a skewed view of Christianity via their (our) addiction to New York's TV producers biases and Hollywood's insatiable "pushing the envelope" morality ringing in their ears.

All that being said, the real delimma to winning our world to the truth in Christ doesn't reside within the minds of those apart from God, but within the minds and hearts of those who claim to belong to Him. That "ER" show made me realize how much of that stuff we, the Church, have swallowed over the last few decades. We've ingested so much of that brainwashing dribble that we've started shrinking away from sharing the gospel as if we don't possess the truth; only our beliefs.

Unless we come to our spiritual senses and realize every person apart from Christ has the right to hear about a God who loves them so profoundly that He sent His only Begotten Son to become a propitiation for their sin by giving His sinless life as payment for them, then it's the Church that has been brainwashed the most, not the lost. Thus, we have decided for them they aren't going to be responsive to the eternal love of God in Christ. We have stolen their hope by keeping it closed up within the four walls of our buildings and locked away from them within the confines of our thoughts.

The Church is supposed to be the "ER" for lost souls. The Church was designed by God Himself to be the place of eternal healing. We alone have been given the mystery of the gospel to share with a world desperately needing its life-changing message.

If we have shrunk into timidity about sharing the gospel with those who need a physician (Matthew 9:12), then it is the Church, God's own people, who are preventing the lost from being saved. We've turned God's "ER" for the lost into a convalescent home for aging saints. We've given up on winning this world and have decided to sit out the remainder of our lives in the comfort and safety of our own salvation.

People are seeking healing today. I'm convinced there is still a longing in every human heart for the relationship that can only be satisfied by a saving relationship to God through Jesus. Millions are secretly, maybe even subconsciously, searching for truth. They are longing for fulfillment. They are open to the gospel if it shared by someone that cares about them and personally demonstrates the life-change that is promised in Christ.

We must begin searching for them; sharing our hearts, lives, homes, faith, and Savior with them in ways that are genuine and honest. We must share with them that God does accept us just as we are, but He also loves us enough to not leave us in the same condition He finds us. That's the truth of the gospel!!

People are hurting and looking for a place of healing. It's too bad that because of our timidity, many will find the wrong "ER."

I've been on a seemingly hopeless quest to organize everything and to pitch the junk that accumulates after twenty-one years of marriage and kids. A closet I always put off is underneath our entrance staircase and everything that we never hope to see again gets jammed in there. Last week I broke down and cleared it out. Hiding among the sleeping bags, boxes of Steeler memorabilia (go Steelers!), old games, and things unidentifiable, stood my son's old Tasco telescope. Holy cow it was beautiful! Why the excitement? When I was a girl growing up in the 60's girls didn't usually get things like telescopes - yes, it was still the dark ages when girls got gifts like play kitchen sets, Barbies, etc. (thanks for straightening us out Gloria Steinem). Girls normally didn't get to use one unless they had an enormously generous brother that possessed one.

For some reason, my son never took much interest in the telescope. I figured he wouldn't mind (like that would stop me if he did har, har) if I dragged it out of the closet, cleaned it up, and messed around with it. Which I did.

The first night I did what every first time budding star gazer does - looked at the moon. I had seen that before via telescope. It still produces that, "oh wow" reaction. I knew at that moment I was hooked. On to the planets! Venus has been in good view. Let me tell you, there's something about seeing the planets 'real time', instead of in pictures, that humbles a person. I can only imagine how the first people to look through telescopes hundreds of years ago must have felt.

Even though I've been tired from staying up late and living vicariously through my son's old telescope, I'm enjoying it immensely. I may look into getting a better model. I might even dig out that old metal detector next (heh, heh).
