The gray nature of the sky casts shadows over most of the world as we know it. The clouds seems to stretch on for eternity, never ceasing, always presiding over the whole Earth. These ruling bodies bring down rain as they please on the unsuspecting populace below them. Their power seems insurmountable in this day; they are never to be overcome, never to be ousted from their throne.
Gusts of wind seem to move before them, harbingers of their consuming power. The mightiest trees box before these mere emissaries of the dominating clouds. The sound of the wind inhibits our own communication and travel. And man thought he had conquered nature…
Rain comes in either downpours or drizzles and everything in between. Water, necessary for sustenance, is the most destructive force over the whole Earth. Streets come to be overrun with rivers that expand beyond their banks. Water, the soldier of the ruling clouds, knows no boundaries it seems.
In the midst of it all, it may seem as though it will never end, this reign of the storm. All one must do is cease from faltering and stand despite the rain. One day, the rains end and their healing power becomes manifest. One day, the sun shines again and we realize that the storm does not have all the power. One day, we all see that it did not cover or consume as much as we thought. On one fine morning, all will be made clear. On one fine morning, all will be made clear.

The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom should I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom should I be afraid?

4-30-08

Wheelman

Subject: Final Appeal Decision

Sear Mr. Wheelman:

This letter is in response to the appeal request we received on April 30, 2008. This appeal is regarding the denied predetermination request for the TiLite ZRa wheelchair and accessories supplied by Monroe Wheelchair.

A medical director, board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics, who was not involved in the original decision, participated in the review of this appeal. We reviewed all available information including:
* your correspondence,
* clinical documentation submitted,
* and Aetna Clinical Policy Bulletin Number 271.

Our Decision
Based on our review of the above information, we are reversing our previous benefit decision and will now allow benefits for this TiLite wheelchair and accessories.

Upon review of the submitted clinical documentation and the related clinical policy bulletin on wheelchairs, the prior determination is overturned. Coverage will be allowed for the requested ultra light wheelchair, special wheels/tires, and other accessories. With the diagnosis of sacroiliac dysfunction and your unique clinical situation, this wheelchair appears to provide the most benefit to support activities of daily living with the least amount of discomfort and with improved mobility.

>>My original goal was to acquire myself independence inside my home. I did not expect to also find the system as broken as I did…

Performance MainStreet - SKY 271 - 22:00 - December 2007

Winner of the 2005 Gold Medal for best direction in the New York festival, Documentary category.

Since the early 20th century, musicians have come together in the name of human rights to fight war, hunger, corruption, oppression, AIDS, apartheid, and Third World debt. From single songs passed by word of mouth to star-studded, multimillion-dollar benefits, activists from Joe Hill to Bob Geldof have spoken up by singing out, drawing together disparate groups of people with unforgettable verse and universal harmony. GET UP, STAND UP serves as a timely reminder of the potent role music has played in a century’s worth of political protest.

This series of programmes traces the birth of protest songs back to the American union movement and explores the impact of pop culture in politicising the baby boomer generation during the Vietnam era. It delves into the history of politics and protest in black music, from the civil rights movement and pacifism to black separatism and gangsta rap.

By weaving together historical footage and commentary from today’s musicians and music critics, the program puts the power of pop into perspective. From the 1970s on, American musicians began taking on larger and larger issues in countries as diverse and far-flung as Bangladesh and Tibet. Benefit concerts and individual hit songs, including Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and USA for Africa’s “We Are the World,” raised millions while capturing the attention of billions worldwide.

Ultimately, GET UP, STAND UP is an investigation and a celebration, a reminder that pop can be so much more than simply “popular” music. Using songs as punctuation, the series chronicles the way music has been used throughout this century to convey social dissatisfaction, from highlighting labour unrest to denouncing terrorist attacks.

“Poetry on television?” they queried - grown up broadcasters who should know better - “Doesn’t work. Radio now, that’s different, that’s the place for poetry.”

It’s not that poetry doesn’t work on television. It’s simply that in it’s few forays onto the screen it hasn’t. Not the fault of the poetry, but the fault of those who didn’t do it right and subsequently pronounced “Poetry on television? Doesn’t work”.

Rather like how we feel about Shakespeare on television. Hasn’t worked either. Why? Because Will didn’t write for TV. He wrote epic theatre in mighty verse, for the famous “wooden O”. For an audience out in the open.

The small screen is a quantum leap in the other direction - intimate, up close and personal. And so is poetry. A simple art form (at least in structure) yet full of drama, insight, love, protest and revolutionary ideas. “Mad bad and dangerous to know”, some of it.

Custom made for the close up, poetry. A one to one relationship between poet (for this person, substitute actor) and the audience.

So we went back to the classics…

First to Will himself - a selection of his sonnets, along with speeches from Portia, Hamlet, Ophelia, Macbeth and Prospero. Then to the moody lyrics of Coleridge, Byron, Keats and Shelley; the nature poetry of Wordsworth, Hardy and the sadly unsung John Clare; the personal insights of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti (not enough women poets in the oeuvre); the heroic verse of Tennyson and Kipling; a slice of rude poetry from the Earl of Rochester; the comic verse of Lear, Hood and WS Gilbert and the searing WW1 protest of John McCrea, Wifred Owen, and Rupert Brooke.

Top liners, all of them. Offered to you, personally, by some of the best actors in the trade.
