<p>I often see people praying on the train, reading the bible or the koran. So train time must be a good time to catch up with your spirituality&#8230; until you are interrupted by some loud and horny R&#8217;n'B mobile phone ring tone.</p>
<p>To the rosary lady, I sincerely hope all your prayers are heard, including the ones about the train being safely on time.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>In questo articolo cercherò di fare il punto della situazione sullo stato dei <strong>driver wireless Ralink</strong>, in particolare dell&#8217;<strong> rt73</strong>, il driver per la mia chiavetta <strong>D-Link DWL- G122 C1</strong>.</p>

<p>In Linux quello che è importante non è tanto il modello della periferica, quanto il suo hardware, il <strong>chipset</strong> che sta all&#8217; interno.<br />
I chipset ralink sono ad oggi assai diffusi sul mercato e sono utilizzati in moltissime periferiche (usb e pci) di diversi produttori. Si possono raggruppare in queste famiglie:</p>
<ul>
<li>rt2400 (pci)</li>
<li>rt2500 (pci)</li>
<li>rt2500 (usb), detto anche rt2570</li>
<li>rt61 (pci)</li>
<li>rt73 (usb)</li>
</ul>
<p>I driver per questi chipset sono già presenti nei kernel attuali, sotto il nome di <strong>rt2&#215;00</strong></p>
<p>Se nel kernel <strong>2.6.20</strong> (Ubuntu <strong>Feisty</strong>) praticamente non partivano per niente, passi avanti si son visti nel <strong>2.6.22</strong> (Ubuntu <strong>Gutsy</strong>) dove questi driver partono, funzionano ma sono alquanto <em>instabili</em>.</p>
<p>In realtà è la <a title="sito ralinktech" href="http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html" target="_blank">RalinkTech</a> stessa a fornire specifiche, firmware e driver linux per i suoi chipset, ma questi si sono sempre dimostrati <span style="text-decoration:underline;">precari e pieni di bug</span>.<br />
Questi driver sono stati presi in mano dai ragazzi del <a title="sito serialmonkey" href="http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com" target="_blank">progetto Serialmonkey</a> che li hanno <span style="text-decoration:underline;">corretti e migliorati</span> e ne hanno tirato fuori i cosidetti &#8220;<strong>driver legacy</strong>&#8220;.<br />
Sono driver che funzionano <em>abbastanza bene</em>, e li ho personalmente utilizzati fino a poco tempo fa. Purtroppo permangono numerosi problemi, soprattutto di compatibilità software. Se li volete provare, potete seguire le guide che ho fatto nel wiki di ubuntu per <a href="http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Hardware/DispositiviSenzaFili/RalinkRT73" target="_blank">rt73</a> e<a href="http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Hardware/DispositiviSenzaFili/RalinkRT2570" target="_blank"> rt2570</a> (la procedura per gli altri è più o meno simile).</p>
<p>Parallelamente a questi, quelli di Serialmonkey hanno iniziato a sviluppare (da zero) dei <strong>nuovi driver rt2&#215;00</strong> generici per tutti i chipset ralink, i quali hanno iniziato a fare gradualmente la loro comparsa nel kernel.</p>
<p>Con l&#8217;arrivo del nuovo stack wireless <strong>mac80211</strong>, in sostituzione all&#8217; ieee80211, tali driver hanno subito un <em>porting</em> che ha anche contribuito ad una impennata nello sviluppo.</p>
<p>I veri risultati si vedranno nel <strong>kernel 2.6.24</strong>, ma c&#8217;è già il sistema anche per provarli nel 2.6.22 (quello di Gutsy, tanto per intendersi).</p>
<p>Tale sistema è quello annunciato qualche giorno fa, quello del <a href="http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download" target="_blank">Linux Compatibility Wireless Package</a>, per gli amici <strong>Compat-Wireless</strong>.</p>
<p>Come ho spiegato nella <a href="http://alexit.wordpress.com/2007/11/21/compat-wireless-ecco-i-nuovi-rivoluzionari-driver-per-molte-schede-wireless/">relativa guida</a>, installando tale pacchetto si abilita lo stack mac80211 e<strong> si aggiornano i moduli rt2&#215;00 presenti nel kernel</strong>.</p>
<p>In particolare si passa dalla versione 2.0.4 del kernel  2.6.22-14 di Gutsy all&#8217;attuale <strong>2.0.14</strong>.<br />
<span style="text-decoration:underline;">Lo sviluppo è rapido e continuo</span>: potete vedere i cambiamenti del GIT in <a href="http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/wireless-everything.git;a=history;f=drivers/net/wireless;" target="_blank">questa pagina</a>.</p>
<p>Dalle prove che ho effettuato per adesso con la mia rt73, le cose vanno <strong>alla grande</strong>. Niente instabilità nè problemi di configurazione, nemmeno con wpa. Tali driver sono infatti <span style="text-decoration:underline;">perfettamente compatibili</span> con <strong>WpaSupplicant</strong> e con relative Gui, <strong>Wicd</strong> in primis.</p>
<p>Adesso la mia chiavetta è veramente rinata! <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Edit del 24/02/2008: visto che versioni successive del pacchetto compat-wireless e dei driver rt2&#215;00 hanno problemi di compilazione e/o di instabilità, metto qua il pacchetto contentente i ralink rt2&#215;00 versione 2.0.14, perfettamente funzionanti.</p>

Exactamente el mismo clack que si haces un apagado de emergencia dese cualquier S.O.. Desde leugo esto no es nada bueno, puesto que uno de estos apagados equivale a 100 apagados normales. Ose dejo aqui cómo solucionarlo:<br />

<p><title></title> 	 	 	 	<!-- 		@page { size: 21cm 29.7cm; margin: 2cm } 		P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } 	--> 	El problema se da en los discos SATA con kernel ≥ 2.6.17 pero no en todos los equipos. En el momento de apagar o hibernar el equipo, una de las últimas operaciones a realizar es aparcar los cabezales del disco duro para su protección pero este proceso no se lleva a cabo antes de que el sistema interrumpa el suministro eléctrico y, en consecuencia, el disco duro realiza una parada de emergencia llevando los cabezales bruscamente a su zona de reposo y escuchándose un &#8220;clack&#8221; en ese momento.</p>
<p>A la larga esto puede causar grandes estragos. Pero estamos en Linux, amigos. Y en Linux todo se acaba conociendo, y entre todos lo acabamos solucionando.</p>
<p>He aquí la solución:</p>
<p>Se ha intentado solucionar en el kernel 2.6.22, así que si tienes uno anterior, primero prueba a instalar éste y si no te aparece este mensaje</p>

<p>En el <u><b>hipotetico</b></u> caso de que aún con el Kernel 2.6.22 te siga sucediendo has de seguir estos pasos:</p>
<p><u>SISTEMA CON KERNEL 2.6.22 PARA i386 </u></p>
<p>Entra en <a href="http://people.debian.org/~stigge/packages/">los repositorios de Brian Stigge</a>. Y descarga los siguientes paquetes:</p>
<p><i>sysvinit 2.86.ds1-38.1.1<br />
sysvinit-utils 2.86.ds1-38.1.1<br />
sysv-rc 2.86.ds1-38.1.1</i></p>
<p>Son .deb , así que sólo hay que ejecutarlos y listo.</p>
<p><u>SISTEMA CON KERNEL 2.6.22 PARA  amd64</u></p>
<p>Añadir los repositorios de Brian Stiggie:</p>

<p><b>Antes de empezar</b></p>
<p>Asumiremos que disponemos de Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn o cualquier distribución basada en Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn, derivadas o similares.</p>
<p>Esta guía utiliza gnome y gedit como editor básico de texto, los usuarios de Kubuntu necesitarán utilizar kate o el editor de su preferencia.</p>
<p>Manos a la obra!</p>
<p><b>Preparando el sistema</b></p>
<p>Primero necesitaremos agregar el repositorio de Gutsy Gibbon (Esto es temporal y únicamente lo utilizaremos para descargar el núcleo).</p>
<p>Desde una terminal: <i>(todo seguido)</i></p>

<p>Para instalar el núcleo 2.6.22-10 utilizar: <i>(todo seguido)</i></p>

<p>Una vez finalizada la descarga e instalación, será necesario quitar el repositorio de Gutsy Gibbon de nuestro <i>sources.list</i>:</p>

<p>Aquí podemos borrar esta línea o simplemente comentarla (“comentar” significa agregar el signo # delante de la línea que corresponde para que no sea tenida en cuenta por el código en cuestión) Línea que debemos borrar o comentar:</p>

<p>Guardar los cambios y cerrar gedit</p>
