Video Link

I just saw this very useful test, I think is a very useful test to know what we can speck from the NikonD90, the HVX has more quality, there is more gamma but doesn’t have a lot of depth of field, for that you have to add a additional mount to add lenses, but the NikonD90 has the ability to change lenses and that makes it a very useful camera to get a very good depth of field for telling stories, but look closely because you can notice a little bit of digital grain on the face of the model, there are more saturated colors on the NikonD90, but the HVX has more gamma and way less digital grain, I think is still better camera than the Nikon one.

I hope someone does a test with both cameras, with good colors, perfect white balance, and probably in a studio soon so we can notice more details on them both.

For the past few months, Panasonic HDC-SD9 owners have not been able to import videos from Panasonic

For the past few months, Panasonic HDC-SD9 owners have not been able to import videos from Panasonic HDC-SD9 correctly. The temporary solutions for Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 users was to install Perian 1.1 plugin.

With the release of QuickTime 7.5, Panasonic HDC-SD9 videos can now be imported using iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, and Final Cut Pro 6.

It is recommended to update all the applications to the latest versions. QuickTime 7.5 is the most critical component to make this work.

I can only confirm this on the North American version of Panasonic HDC-SD9 (with 24p Cinema Mode). The European version (with 25p Cinema Mode) theoretically should now work with the Mac.

UPDATE:

Hans Eklundh left a comment and confirmed that the 25p PAL version (Europe) also works with QuickTime 7.5

UPDATE:
It seems that QuickTime 7.5 update adds the compatibilities between Panasonic HDC-SD9 and iM

UPDATE:
It seems that QuickTime 7.5 update adds the compatibilities between Panasonic HDC-SD9 and iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, and Final Cut Pro 6.

UPDATE:
Thanks to James and Hans Eklundh for confirming that QuickTime 7.5 now supports PAL/European HDC-SD9.

Immediately after applying iMovie 7.1.2 update, I recorded a number of videos on Panasonic HDC-SD9.

HA1920

HA1920 24p

HG1920

I managed to import the videos without any problems at all, and the audio is in sync with the video. Previously, iMovie ‘08 was unable to import the video from Panasonic HDC-SD9 correctly. It crashes during HA1920 import. The HA1920 24p video was playing faster than the audio track.

I am doing more testing on this issue, and will post the result as soon as possible.

The gears:

Panasonic HDC-SD9

15-inch MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.0GHz 2GB

iMovie 7.1.2

QuickTime 7.5

Mac OS X 10.5.3

Stay tuned.

This is my first detailed post in some weeks and my first detailed post since returning from NAB 200

This is my first detailed post in some weeks and my first detailed post since returning from NAB 2008. April and May has always been my busiest months of the year. In fact, with the exception of NAB I always feel at this time of year that I live a nearly a monk like existence. It’s the end of the school year and we’re planning what we can accomplish in my workplace for the fall startup of the Undergraduate classes so I’m very busy.

One of the things I went to NAB for was to look at Blu-ray and how it might be used as a 24p distribution medium by our Film Studies school and in the Radio and Television Arts program at Ryerson. My contention at Ryerson had been that this was not as easy –or as cheap– a proposition as some thought it might be. I’m quite happy to report that it turns our my assumption was incorrect.

Prior to NAB my hopes were raised that inexpensive 24p Blu-ray playback was practical when I discovered that;

The Playstation 3 was indeed capable of playing back 24p Blu-ray discs in 24p.

A number of consumer level LCD displays are capable of accepting and playing back 24p frame rates.

However, for a conference that billed itself at a place where “Content Comes To Life”, I have to admit that when it came to Blu-ray at 24p, there was little apparent information on it. My first stop was SONIC Solutions. There they continued to sell their industrial level software authoring packages that I had always considered costly. SONiC Solutions does create packages that are really designed for advanced authoring of big name and big budget DVD titles.

SONIC Solutions

When I asked at SONIC how I might be able to burn 24p discs on a modest budget I was directed to a consumer package that they did not have in their booth. Since getting back from NAB and getting a chance to look at their site this evening I discovered that their Roxio’s DVDit® Pro HD package indeed encodes at 1080p, or 720 @ 24P. You can watch the flash video that clearly shows the author selecting 24p as part of the authoring process. That link is at http://img.roxio.com/enu/flash/dvditprohd/dvdit%20pro%20hd6.html

SONY

Sony was a little more difficult to understand because they have a high end product called Blu-print and at NAB they announced Blu Ray authoring capability in a couple of their products.

SONY’s Blu-print is their “high end” authoring tool that was designed for “Hollywood” to authour the first and next generation Blu-ray discs. According to SONY’s site, some of the key features of Blu-print are the following;

Blu-print supports the entire range of the BDMV specifications, allowing you to fully author BD discs with up to 999 movie objects, 9 video angles, over 2000 playlists.

Blu-print is fully compatible with all three HD codecs approved by the Blu-ray Association, which are AVC/H.264, VC-1, and MPEG-2.

Blu-print handles all integration of a BDJO (Blu-ray Disc Java Object) project so you can easily integrate your BD-J JAR (Java Archive) files and associate them with the BDJO. (Java is used to implement interactive menus on Blu-ray Discs)

Blu-print allows for full HD audio using the newest available audio codecs, including DD+ (Dolby Digital), DTS-HD (Digital Theatre Sound), Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital, DTS and LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) audio files.

Blu-print provides full support for subtitle streams for both image and text-based subtitles.

These Blu-print features go beyond the authoring abilities of SONY’s other Blu-ray authoring products and since there is no pricing for it on SONY Creative’s website I gather this is an industrial level (and priced) package.

SONY Vegas

According to SONY Creative, SONY’s editing package Vegas has “for Blu-ray Disc burning allows you to create a disc similar to a “single movie” DVD—the movie has no titles, menus, or buttons. Blu-ray Disc burning in Vegas Pro 8 software provides an alternate distribution option for high-definition content, rather than traditional file-based hard disk or streaming media formats. You can also use the Blu-ray Disc burning feature to create high-definition discs that can playback on a set-top Blu-ray Disc player or on a Sony PS3 gaming system.”

I can’t find the exact specification of the Blu-ray on the website so –for now– I’m working on the assumption that Vegas will support 1080p or 720p at 24fps. Assuming the frame rate is available his was and is the basic functionality that we we’re looking for. So reading this was good news.

DVD Architect™ Studio

It was announced at NAB that SONY’s DVD Architect™ Studio, which is a DVD authoring software package in the same vein as APPLE’s DVD Studio Pro 4, would also author Blu-ray disks. However in checking SONY Creative’s site it’s again not clear what Blu-ray formats the software outputs.

What about Final Cut Pro?

Nothing yet from APPLE and Final Cut Pro but it appears if you have and INTEL Mac, Adobe Encore CS3 –that includes Adobe Premiere® Pro CS3– would be your choice for Blu-ray authoring.

More soon….

….brad….

Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express: Unexpected quit with Panasonic HDC-SD9 AVCHD

Symptoms
Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express may quit unexpectedly when using the Log and Transfer window to preview AVCHD media from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder.

Products Affected
Final Cut Pro 6.0, Final Cut Express 4.0

Resolution
The Panasonic HDC-SD9 model camcorder is currently not qualified for use with Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express. Although some devices that are not qualified may work to some extent with Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express, in this case the camcorder may not perform as expected.

To find devices qualified for use with Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express, refer to Qualified Devices for Apple Pro Applications.

Additional Information
This camcorder’s implementation of AVCHD video uses a format of H.264 that employs “Br-frames”, which are similar to traditional MPEG-4 B-frames, but contain motion reference information. The Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express components that preview AVCHD media currently do not recognize or handle Br-frames in AVCHD data.

Up to this point, Panasonic HDC-SD9 is not yet supported in Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express by Apple.

“Good news, everyone! We finally can use Panasonic HDC-SD9 and Final Cut Pro.”

UPDATE:
So far, I have not been able to import 1080p/24p clip from HDC-SD9 into iMovie correctly. I’m still looking into it. I don’t have Final Cut Express 4 to test the import.

Good news, indeed. After 6 weeks, I finally get to import 1080p/24p clip from Panasonic HDC-SD9 correctly. The audio and video are in complete sync. The remedy is none other than Perian 1.1. Previously, Perian QuickTime Component was conflicting with Final Cut Pro.

Numbers of people raised the concern regarding Panasonic HDC-SD9 compatibility with Mac OS X applications (iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Pro 6, and Final Cut Express 4). I was exploring this issue because I want to use my Panasonic HDC-SD9 in 1080p/24 mode.

Panasonic HDC-SD9: The Trouble with Mac OS X

Panasonic HDC-SD9: Video Mode

I asked some Apple employees regarding this problem, and the non-answer I got is that Apple is working on camera compatibility issues. I’m hoping that Apple would update their applications to support Panasonic HDC-SD9 in particular and newer 1080p/24p camcorders in general.

On Thursday (2008.04.10), Apple released Pro Applications Update 2008-001 and brought Final Cut Pro to version 6.0.3. I was hoping that Apple would have resolved the issues with HDC-SD9 camcorder. Unfortunately, the issue persisted.

I decided to spend some times for trial-and-error in making Final Cut Pro playing nice with HDC-SD9. It was 03:00 hour, and I had an epiphany. Previously, some people were recommending ShedWorx’s VoltaicHD Converter to import AVCHD clip in Mac OS X. I went to ShedWorx’s site and read the System Requirements for the VoltaicHD Converter:

System Requirements for the VoltaicHD Converter:

OSX 10.4 or 10.5 (Intel and PowerPC)

QuickTime 7.3

Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)

iMovie (HD or 08) or Final Cut Express/Pro

Perian if you are using Final Cut

VoltaicHD requires Perian QuickTime Component!

I checked Perian site, and compared the version I previously had installed on my MacBook Pro. The current version 1.1 and I had version 1.0 installed on my MacBook Pro. I downloaded the latest version and installed it. This time Final Cut Pro converts the 1080p/24p clip from HDC-SD9 correctly.

I will test if I could import HDC-SD9 1080p/24p video using iMovie ‘08 and Final Cut express with Perian 1.1 installed.

UPDATE (2008.04.11):
I finally get it to work with Final Cut Pro!!! just search for HDC-SD9 on this blog.

Panasonic HDC-SD9 is capable recording video in 1080p and 24 mode. This is one great feature on a compact camcorder. The quality of the video is amazing.

Unfortunately for Mac users, this camcorder is not fully compatible with iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, and Final Cut Pro 6. The three applications crash during playback or import of videos recorded in non-”24p Digital Cinema” mode. When the “24p Digital Cinema” mode is turned on, iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, and Final Cut Pro 6 can playback and import the recorded video. Even though the three applications can play and import the video, some problems persist.

To illustrate the problems, please check-out the following videos. Both videos were recorded at the same time, one is using Panasonic HDC-SD5 and the other is using Panasonic HDC-SD9. You’ll see how the HDC-SD9 video is playing faster than the actual recording.

Both videos are resized to 960×540 resolutions. This is done due to the sheer monstrosity of the 1920×1080 file size. QuickTime 7 is required for proper playback.

Panasonic HDC-SD5 Recording (H.264 13.2MB)

Panasonic HDC-SD9 Recording (H.264 9.2MB)

The imported video plays faster while the audio plays at normal speed. Somehow the video and audio go out of sync during the import. By default iMovie ‘08 transcoded the AVCHD video to Apple Intermediate Codec, while Final Cut Pro transcoded the AVCHD video to Apple ProRes 422. I will try importing the AVCHD video to another format using Final Cut Pro later.

——-

note: I blame Carrie for making me re-learn “Greensleeves“

Panasonic HDC-SD9 is capable of recording video in 1080p/24p mode. Mac users find out that iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, and Final Cut Pro 6 are unable to read/import videos from HDC-SD9 that are not recorded in 24p mode.

UPDATE:
Currently iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, and Final Cut Pro 6 do not transcode AVCHD video correctly. The video is faster than the audio.
More info here.

To enable the highest quality recording and 24p mode, go to the “video” menu, and set the followings:

REC MODE: HA1920

24pDIGITAL CINEMA: ON

By selecting those options, the HDC-SD9 camera will be recording in 1080p and 24p mode. In addition to that, Mac users can import the videos to iMovie ‘08, Final Cut Express 4, or Final Cut Pro 6.

UPDATE:
For some reasons, Final Cut Pro imported the video and speed it up a little bit. One video runs about 40 seconds, while the imported video runs about 28 seconds. It is clear that Final Cut Pro does not fully understand the recording mode from this camera.

I am looking forward to the “progressive 1080/24p” mode on the HDC-SD9

Ultimate AVMag-sivusto on arvostellut LG:n uuden BH200-soittimen. Soitin korjaa mm. edeltäjänsä BH100-soittimen suurimman puutteen eli HD-DVD:n bonusmateriaalien toistomahdollisuuden. Laite <strike>on samalla ensimmäinen markkinoille ehtinyt soitin joka</strike> tukee tulevien Blu-Ray elokuvien kuten Sunshine:n kuva-kuvassa dokumentti ominaisuutta. Arvostelun mukaan 1080p24 toisto ei onnistunut. Soittimen olisi pitänyt tunnistaa näyttölaitteen 24p tuki ja kytkeytyä 24p moodiin siinä kuitenkaan onnistumatta. Soittimen Marvell QDEO prosessori suoriutui hyvin HQV Benchmark-levyn testeistä. Äänipuolella soitin onnistui antamaan ulos monikanavaista PCM:ää muttei yhtäkään uusista ääniformaateista. Artikkelissa tosin mainittiin että soitin pystyisi tulevan päivityksen myötä suoltamaan ulos jopa DTS-HD MA:ta bittivirtana osaavalle vahvistimelle. Hinta on Jenkeissä $1000. Samsungin tuleva BD-UP5000 tulee piakkoin myyntiin “vain” $800 hintaan jolloin LG joutuu pakosti tiputtamaan BH200:n ovh:ta. Kirjoitushetkellä suomalaisia hintatietoja ei ollut saatavilla.

Nykyään esimerkiksi 1080i videokameroissa on harhaanjohtavasti mainosteksti Full-HD.

On Sunday morning, 1am we were back at Huber’s restaurant. Unlike last week we were able to wrap by 9am. And that my friend means the end of principal photography. I will most likely be doing post color correction work on the short once Norm gets the final edit done. As of right now the film is scheduled to be done in December, before Christmas.

As far as the footage, a couple of sneak clips will hopefully be up by Friday for your viewing pleasure. I’ll keep you updated. Also for more updates on the film you can check out the “Berlin” forum on DVXuser.com.

A little tech. info on the short film:
We shot the film using two HD cameras, the Panasonic HVX200s. We shot in 720p at 24p. We were going to use the Letus35 Extreme (a 35mm adapter used to achieve less depth of field) but the light lose from it was too much with the already low light we were shooting in for the barn scene and the cabaret scene at Huber’s.

On September 1, 2007, Sharp launched the XL2E series AQUOS LCD TVs ranging in size of 42″, 46

On September 1, 2007, Sharp launched the XL2E series AQUOS LCD TVs ranging in size of 42″, 46″ and 52″ at IFA 2007 in Berlin, Germany.

Sharp XL2E Series AQUOS

Sizes: 42″ (LC-42XL2E), 46″ (LC-46XL2E), 52″ (LC-52XL2E)
Frequency: 100Hz
Pixel Format: Full HD, 1080p, 1920 x 1080 and 1920 x 1080/24p
Contrast Ratio: 2000:1, 10000:1 dynamic
Tuner: DVB-T and analog
Input: YUV, VGA, HDMI (3)
Availability: Q4′07
Prices: TBD

The most unique feature about the XL2E series is that it can support video display of 1920 x 1080/24p or 1280 x 720/24p input. Twenty four frames per second that is displayed progressively is simply 24p and is the worldwide standard for how film is captured and displayed. Because digital displays such as LCD TVs are usually running at 50Hz (European standard) and 60Hz (US standard), to display 24p content there needs to be processing step called 3:2 Pull Down. Well, that is not necessary for Sharp’s XL2E series AQUOS LCD TVs as they can display 24p. Quite nice. The other notable features are 100Hz (solves motion blur to a large extent) and 1080p (future proof, though current content will not look very good without good scaling capability).
