It’s been brought to our attention at Ovadyah that a recent incident has caused many at Bethany’s “Campus” in Baker, La to question their leaders motives. We have seen with the election of America’s first Black President, Barack Obama, hidden racism and prejudice by believers and non-believers. I have in my possession a supposedly deleted blog by Joel Stockstill where he went-off on Barack and his supporters that wept in celebration of America’s first african-american president.

As a result, many black members of Bethany were shocked and questioned whether they should remain. In fact, I received this supposedly deleted blog from another disgruntled-former member. I say supposedly not to call this brother (who provided the deleted post) a liar but to continue this site’s truth nature.

Furthermore, it was brought to my attention that local D.J. Guy Brody , of 106.5 F.M.,came into contact with the statements by Joel Stockstill and have made several attempts to contact Joel Stockstill concerning this matter but to no avail.

I know and see people who called themselves Christian attacking and attacked President-elect Obama but NEVER JOHN MCCAIN. This is the situation at hand. This is how George W. Bush was elected. The church was successful in influencing their congregation to do the Christian thing and vote for a Christian President. As we saw with George W. Bush, he was christian only by name.  I’m so glad African-Americans weren’t tricked again!! Yet what saddens me is that it brought out the hidden racism and prejudice of chistians.

I’m still in the research process but I felt the need to address this situation due to 78 e-mails asking if the above situation is true. Please be patient and I will verify it.

This is my second blog title inspired by a number.  The first was the complete shock and awe I was hit with when I saw the big part of the scale get pushed all the way over to the right during a recent doctor visit.  This one however, is good news. 

If any readers are frequent weight lifters, you might recognize the number 225 as a significant milestone.  Let me explain: when doing the bench press, which is the most basic of all upper body lifts, and the general gauge for strength, the bar weighs forty five pounds (aActually, it weighs forty five pounds regardless of what you are doing).  Free weights come in the following sizes: 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35 and 45 pounds.  When you put one big one on each end, you have 135 pounds.  When you put on two of the big ones on each end, you have 225 pounds.  This is a real-man’s weight.  This is the weight when you are first taken seriously.  “Two plates,” is the standard test for most football players testing their strength.  A top draft pick going into the NFL can do 30 or so in one set.

When I began my lifting a couple of weeks ago I put 135 on the bar and was unable to do 3 sets of 10.  On Monday I was able to do three sets of 10 with relative ease.  On Wednesday I did a standard pyramid, adding 10 pounds and deducting 2 reps each set, and finished with 2 reps of 185.  So today I decided to test my metal, and do a good ol’ max.  So I decided to go with two of the big ones on each side - Two plates - my first try in over three years at a real-man’s weight: 225.

I stood there looking at the weight, remembering a time when that was not a daunting task.  It was mocking me, daring me to lift it.  Telling me I was too old, too fat, and much, much too weak.  With Metallica playing in my headphones, I started to get that old feeling - that feeling I loved so much when I played football - that heart-racing sense of fear and excitement, knowing that the moment of truth was an instant away.  I was confident.  I knew I was going to win, but I got a spotter anyway because I’m not stupid.  I sat down on the bench, looked up at the bar mocking me one more time and said, “Fuck you,” and lifted it not once, but twice.

For the last couple of days I have done something completely new during my workout.  Instead of counting my reps off to ten, I spell a word.  With each rep, instead of exhaling “one, two, three…” I breath the letters of my daugter’s name.  It is a constant reminder of why I am there.  It motivates me to know that I am struggling for her.  I get done with a set, and picture her at a high school graduation, in a wedding dress, holding her own daughter.  Tired, out of breath, unable to lift my arms, I smile and push back a tear. 

Today I realized that I what I am doing is working.  I haven’t gotten on a scale in awhile because I’m not really interested in my weight.  I am interested in being around to see my daughter grow up, and maybe get lucky enough to know her children too. 

I gotta go, she just woke up from her nap.

I apologize for my lax in posting lately.  I have been playing with my new Internet speed from Comcast which is 22mb down and 5mb up.  Of course with power boost I’m getting way more than that initially.  I am so happy to be surfing at such high speeds :-)  At least this way when my other half is blowing things up in Call of Duty 4, I can be doing something else Internet related and not be stuck watching him.   Ok…got to run for now.  It’s getting chilly here in NH and the political ads are getting more profuse and brutal.

Trovo più sfumato quello di “2+2=5“, esplicitamente ispirato alle profezie di “1984″ (di cui il titolo stesso è una citazione) e “La fattoria degli animali” di George Orwell; più esplicito il video di “Do the evolution“, che rappresenta scenari catastrofici alla “Ken il guerriero”.

خلفية

أول مرة استعملت فيها نظام لينوكس كانت في صيف عام 2001 عندما كنت أعمل في تصميم المواقع، حيث كنت أحتاج إلى الربط مع الخادم لتحميل الملفات التي أعمل عليها. ولم تتعدى حاجتي سوى بعض الأوامر الأساسية التي تعلمتها في بضع ساعات. لم أستخدمه بعد ذلك حتى عام 2005، عندما بتصميم موقع دائرة الهندسة الكهربائية و هندسة أنظمة الحاسوب في بيرزيت، حيث أدرس. حينها كان جزء كبير من عملي يتطلب البرمجة بلغة PHP و قد بدأت بذلك على ويندوز إلا أن العمل لم يكن مريحا، لذا قررت أن أقوم بالعمل على لينوكس حتى تكون البيئة التي أطور بها مشابهة للخوادم التي سأنشر عليها عملي لاحقا.

بعد أن انتهيت من العمل على الموقع، لم أستخدم لينوكس حتى العام التالي، عندما كنت أدرس مادة تتطلب البرمجة وفقا لنظام POSIX. حينها أذهلتني سهولة القيام ببعض الأمور -من الناحية البرمجية- مقارنة بويندوز، حيث يبدو كل شيء مغلقا أمام المبرمج. كما أعجبتني كمية الدعم و المؤلفات التي توثق كل ما يتعلق بلينوكس -و غيره من الأنظمة المشتقة من يونكس. تدريجيا وجدت نفسي أستعمل لينوكس ليس للبرمجة فقط و إنما لأغلب الأشياء الروتينية ابتداء من كتابة التقارير و انتهاء بتصفح الإنترنت و قد حفزني عى ذلك سرعته و قلة استهلاكه للذاكرة مقارنة بويندوز. و خلال ثلاثة أشهر قررت أن أتحول إلى لينوكس و ها أنا اليوم بعد عام أستعمل لينوكس في 95 بالمئة من الوقت.

توزيعات لينوكس

خلال هذا العام استعملت ثلاثة توزيعات (Distributions) مختلفة من لينوكس. بدأت أولا ب Fedora 4 إلا أنني قررت تركه بعد فترة قصيرة لأنني لم أجده مناسبا جدا للإستخدام اليومي. بعدها انتقلت إلى OpenSUSE 9.1 و قد كان جيدا جدا، خاصة برنامج YaST الذي يمكن تشبيهه بلوحة التحكم في ويندوز، إلا أنني بعد فترة من استخدامه وجدت بعض المشاكل في نظام تثبيت البرامج الذي يأتي ضمن YaST.

خلال هذا الوقت كان أوبونتو (Ubuntu) قد بدأ بالإنتشار و كنت قد سمعت و قرأت الكثير عن مزاياه، إلا أنه لم يكن خيارا ممكنا بالنسبة لي لأنني لم أكن أمتلك وصلة إنترنت ذات سرعة عالية و المعروف أن أوبونتو يأتي في قرص مدمج واحد يحوي البرامج الأساسية فقط و يتم تنزيل باقي البرامج من خلال الإنترنت. عندما حصلت على وصلة إنترنت بسرعة عالية -أو معقولة- قمت بتركيب أوبونتو مباشرة، و ها أنا أستخدمه حتى الآن بلا أية مشاكل.

نظام سطح المكتب

أيهما أحسن كنظام لإدارة سطح المكتب (desktop environment) جنوم (GNOME) أم KDE؟ هنالك بالطبع صراع يدور حول هذا الموضوع لكنني شخصيا جربت كليهما لفترة وجيزة ووجدت أن جنوم يناسبني أكثر. من الصعب إعطاء أسباب معينة لتفضيلي نظام جنوم، إلا أنني أنصح من يريد الإختيار أن يستخدم النظامين و يقرر بنفسه أيهما يجده أنسب، و في كل الأحوال فإنه بالإمكان استخدام التطبيقات الخاصة بأحد النظامين داخل النظام الآخر.

البرامج

البرامج التي أستخدمها بشكل يومي هي:

• تصفح الإنترنت: Firefox مع بعض الإضافات (plugins).
• البرمجة: Gedit. هنالك الكثير من البرامج القوية التي يمكن استخدامها لكتابة البرامج مثلEmacs أو vim إلا أنني شخصيا أفضل Gedit لبساطته. كما أنني أستخدم Emacs لتنسيق المصدر (source code).
• المحادثة: Gaim. يمكن إستخدامه مع MSN, Yahoo, IRC و غيرها من البروتوكولات الشائعة.
• الموسيقى و الفيديو: Banshee, Totem ,VLC.
• الكتابة: Lyx (برنامج رائع) و OpenOffice.
• تنزيل البرامج: Synaptic.

بشكل عام، هنالك بديل لكل للغالبية العظمى من البرامج التي كنت أستخدمها في ويندوز، و كثير البدائل تعطيك إمكانيات جديدة لم تكن موجودة في ويندوز. الإستثناء الكبير في هذه الحالة هو الألعاب، إذ يمكنك إيجاد بدائل للألعاب البسيطة (الشطرنج، الشدة، ماسح الألغام…) أما الألعاب الكبيرة و المعقدة مثل الألعاب القتالية أو ألعاب السيارات فنادرا ما يمكن إيجاد بدائل لها في نظام لينوكس و بنفس جودة تلك المتوفرة لمستخدمي ويندوز في الوقت الحالي.

مصير ويندوز

رغم التحول إلى لينوكس إلا أنني لا زلت أستخدم ويندوز بين الحين و الآخر و لم أقم بإزالته نهائيا عن جهازي. أغلب استخدامي لويندوز مرتبط بدراستي، حيث أحتاج لاستعمال بعض البرامج مثل MATLAB و PSpice و غيرها من البرامج المتخصصة. كما أنني أستخدم ويندوز لتنزيل البرامج على جهازي المحمول، إذ إن لينوكس يفتقر لبرنامج مناسب حتى الآن.

Ha gustado mucho la escogencia entre las bases conservadoras republicanas, que podrían terminar de convencerse a votar a McCain, y -lo admitimos- también ha gustado mucho en el blog AM.

Hay varias cosas que nos gustan (como estas), pero nos gusta sobre todo que la señora Palin tiene 44 años -Obama 47-, y sin embargo fue alcaldesa por seis años, y ha sido gobernadora por dos. Es decir, sí se puede ser joven y tener experiencia. Que sí, sí se puede. Me temo que, si siguen la campaña presidencial norteamericana, escucharán eso en el futuro.

En un comunicado apresurado, la campaña Obama ha dicho que la escogencia de Palin deja fuera de la mesa el debate sobre la experiencia (vaya! 1: ahora sí quieren hablar sobre la experiencia, ahora sí es un tema importante, vaya! 2: cómo quisieran eso…). Pero no tomaron en cuenta ciertos detalles: Que Palin no es candidata a la presidencia, por ejemplo -según la matemática de los demócratas, la adición de Palin al parecer resta experiencia a McCain; matemática parecida a la de, por ejemplo, Radiohead-. Y también que Palin tiene 8 años de experiencia en el poder ejecutivo, balanceando presupuestos, y siendo comandante en jefe de los troopers locales. Esos son 8 años de experiencia de gobierno más que Obama y Biden sumados.

Pero a lo que iba.

Lyeing down on my bed as I do when I wake up when I just lie and think, I started thinking about the equation: 2+2=5. I know that 1+1 can be 0,  4+8 can be 7, but can two and two make five? Where is the origin anyway? George Orwell has an amazing book, 1984. Set in a dystopic future, it is the book that gives popular culture the concept of “Big Brother”. In one particular scene, Winston Smith, the protagonist, wonders if the state declares that two and two is five and it is a fact and if everyone believed it, would it be true?  Later in the novel, when he is electro-schocked, he is asked to declare that he sees five fingers when he sees four, to which he replies: “Four! Five! Four! I don’t know!” This scene with the electro-shock torture was repeated similarly in star trek and the idea of 2 + 2 = 5 or of forced fact is found in many songs. Ok, let’s skip the history, is it possible? I mean, is there any proof that 2 and 2 will ever make a 5? It is ilogical. It cannot be, or can it? I leave this question open for debate and wish to find an answer quick, though from what I have read it is impossible, but still… I might be wrong…
