A million lifetimes after Election Day, the officially tally in Minnesota will finally have Senator

A million lifetimes after Election Day, the officially tally in Minnesota will finally have Senator Norm Coleman defeating Al Franken by 215 votes – this after a 725 vote advantage for Coleman somehow magically whittled its way down, incrementally, over a two week period by a count of over 500.

Missing ballots were, amazingly, being discovered almost everywhere - like in car trunks - and before anyone realized it, Franken was cheating -er, fighting his way toward an improbably (and sickening) victory.

Oh well. Sorry, Al.

He again fell short.

Now it’s officially recount time, despite Franken’s failed attempts to find even more ways to steal a win.

From the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul :

How is it even close?

Al Franken asked Monday to have rejected absentee ballots be considered in the U.S. Senate election results that are to be certified today by a state board, a move later blunted by an attorney general’s opinion that the issue should be left to the courts.

The eleventh-hour maneuvering occurred as the five-member state Canvassing Board prepared to meet at 1 p.m. today in St. Paul to review results showing Republican Sen. Norm Coleman with a lead of 215 votes out of more than 2.9 million cast.

That margin includes the canvassed results submitted by Minnesota’s 87 counties, plus an additional nine votes in Coleman’s favor that emerged from a post-election audit conducted in a sampling of about 200 precincts to check the accuracy of voting machines.

The difference is well within the one-half percentage point required to trigger an automatic hand recount, which Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said he was “absolutely” certain will begin Wednesday morning despite the last-minute challenge.

I think there were some uncounted ballots for Franken behind the soda machine at the Shell Station on Riverside Avenue that weren’t considered.

Why the marijuana raids?

To the Editor:

Mendocino County law enforcement is reportedly conducting a major sweep of marijuana growers, big and small. I’ve heard reports that there are so many marijuana arrestees in jail that people are sleeping on the floor. Some have been arrested for a single plant!

Meanwhile, the epidemic of heroin overdoses in the county among young people continues. I know of two in Fort Bragg in the past couple of months, and one probation officer tells me she’s lost 9 probationers to drug overdoses in the past year. Methamphetamine continues to plague our young families, leading to domestic violence and removal of children from their parents due to neglect by meth-using parents.

Why is law enforcement concentrating on marijuana, a medicine for many people, rather than on pernicious drugs like heroin and methamphetamine?

This awesome episode of South Park is brought to you in Spooky Vision, which means that Barbra Streisand’s face is in each corner of your screen throughout the entire terrifying Halloween episode.

When Stan’s Aunt Flo visits and brings Stan a goldfish, he quickly realize that it’s evil and murdering people. Bizarre as well is that Cartman starts being really awesome and nice, until the boys understand that there are two Cartmans: one evil, who they know, and one good, who seems to be from an evil parallel universe. This evil parallel universe is coming from the Ancient Indian Burial Ground pet store, where the pets are evil and going around killing people.

I mentioned this was a Halloween episode, right? Well it’s a good one. Enjoy!

When Barack Obama enters the White House in January, will he make good on his promise to end federal interference with state medical marijuana laws? Reformers have not easily forgotten the broken promise of George Bush, who spoke of “state’s rights” regarding medical marijuana on the campaign trail only to subsequently declare war on patients and providers in states that protect medical use.

While the terms of engagement between DEA and the medical marijuana community under an Obama administration won’t be fleshed out for many months, I’d like to remind everyone what exactly we’ve been told to expect. This is the Obama campaign’s response to emails about medical marijuana:

Voters yesterday overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, making getting caught with less than an ounce of pot punishable by a civil fine of $100. The change in the law means someone found carrying dozens of joints will no longer be reported to the state’s criminal history board.

With about 90 percent of the state’s precincts reporting last night, voters favored the Question 2 proposition 65 percent to 35 percent.

“The people were ahead of the politicians on this issue; they recognize and want a more sensible approach to our marijuana policy,” said Whitney Taylor, chairwoman of the Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy, which campaigned for the ballot initiative. “They want to focus our limited law enforcement resources on serious and violent crimes. They recognize under the new law that the punishment will fit the offense.”

Does anybody out there know that for the first time in American history the U.S. Army was used in a war operation against the American people? Right near here, up in Humboldt County about 200 miles north of San Francisco right near a town called Shelter Cove, get this: three- to four-hundred American G.I.s dressed with automatic rifles and fully armed for battle, fanned out on maneuvers through the woods, backed up by a dozen Blackhawk attack helicopters. The mountain people up there were frightened out of their wits! They thought there was a war going on, especially the ones that had soldiers kicking in the doors to their cabins and putting guns to their heads in front of their children.

Why!? Who was the enemy in this war? Not the communists! Not Saddam Hussein! Not Earth First! or even the spotted owl. No! The enemy they called out the army to put down, secretly, so few people outside of Humboldt would get alarmed as possible, it wasn’t even a person or an army or a terrorist group! It was a plant, the marijuana plant.

TORONTO - Canadians prescribed marijuana to treat illness will have more choice in where to buy their drugs after a court ruling Monday that ends the federal government’s monopoly on supplying medical marijuana to patients.

Justice Department lawyers had sought to appeal a lower-court ruling that granted licensed producers the right to grow marijuana for more than one patient.

But the Federal Court of Appeal dismissed the government’s challenge, saying it was not persuaded by government lawyers who argued that growers supplying more than one patient would lead to an unregulated industry.

In January, a federal court judge struck down the one-to-one ratio as unconstitutional and unnecessarily restrictive. The judgment was stayed pending Monday’s appeal.

Lawyer Alan Young, who represented medical marijuana users, said the ruling was a victory for “sick people.”

“It’s time for Health Canada to recognize that medical marijuana is an established part of the regimen for a lot of patients,” Young said outside court. “Instead of thwarting patient needs, they should be accommodating patient needs and, hopefully, this case will be a signal to them.”

Authorized users who cannot grow their own marijuana can designate a grower, or obtain government-issued marijuana supplied by Prairie Plant Systems in Manitoba.

But a group of 30 patients who challenged the regulations argued the government pot was weak, and they should have the option to select their source.

HELENA — Montana courts cannot bar medical marijuana patients from using the drug as a condition of their probation or parole, the state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.

The decision overturned a lower court’s ruling that prohibited a Conrad man from using marijuana while serving a three-year deferred sentence.

“This is a very big and important victory, both for patients and Montana voters,” said Tom Daubert, founder and director of Patients and Families United, a support group for patients who use medical marijuana.

Montana voters overwhelmingly passed a ballot initiative in 2004 legalizing the use of medical marijuana in the state.

In Tuesday’s 6-1 decision, the Supreme Court found that District Judge Laurie McKinnon overstepped her authority when she barred Timothy Nelson of Conrad from using medical marijuana as a condition of his sentence.

Nelson pleaded no contest to a charge of criminal possession or manufacture of dangerous drugs in 2007, after Pondera County authorities found evidence of a marijuana growing operation in his home.

After being charged, Nelson registered with the state medical marijuana program. He suffers from a degenerative disc disorder and has had four surgeries on his back, according to court records.

Hello everyone!

Fondest greetings to all you beautiful bloggerhead turtles drifting over to our site, hungry for the knoj.

Well, Ariela and I are here to help all y’all.

You see, on a recent sunny Saturday, after filling our gills with the ritual brunch, we were visited by the ghost of Mrs. Butterworth. She informed us that she has been smiling down on us from that big fluffy heavencake in the sky and has noticed our brunching ways. She has listened in on our conversations, and enjoyed our discussions concerning topics varying from the structural integrity of the tofu scramble, to the spreadability of table temp. butter. After lauding our love for that particular meal betwixt breakfast and lunch she charged us with a task.

“My pancake worshipping chillun: go tell it on the mountain, take your love for this meal and cover the world with it, as you cover your pancakes with my sweet syrup”

With that she vanished. At first we thought it was a dream. A shared hallucination brought by the 6th topping off of coffee we received at the fine brunch establishment.

No matter.

Dream or not, we will fulfill the wishes of Madame Butterworth. Being that people don’t rally congregate at the feet of mountains any longer, and Brian’s beard is months from Moses length, we figured that we’d start a little blog for you.

This blog will follow our brunching escapades as we record our travels in the Philadelphia area in the pursuit of good brunch. And review the quality based on our own subjective, idiosyncratic standards.

But we’ll get to those later.

For now hold on to your hats! More is coming! We look forward to sharing our expert opinions, and fulfilling your appetites for brunching knowledge!

Peace out homeslices.

Not only are there a number of state-level initiatives, there are also a handful of initiatives at the county or municipal level. With election day little more than a month away, it is time for a round-up of drug policy reform initiatives facing voters in November. Not only are there a number of state-level initiatives dealing with marijuana decriminalization, medical marijuana, and sentencing reform (or its opposite), there are also a handful of initiatives at the county or municipal level.

VANCOUVER — There’s green to be made clipping and trimming the green leaves in British Columbia’s marijuana industry.

The prospect of tax-free income is driving some people into temporary work as “clippers” for indoor and outdoor grow operations.

It’s not only against the law, it’s also considered the most labour-intensive part of the harvesting process. But there isn’t a shortage of people willing to do the work.

Pot clippers - also known as trimmers - groom marijuana plants that have been harvested from fields or indoor grow operations. The workers pare down the buds from the plants to make them presentable for sale.

SANTA CRUZ - Thousands of medicinal marijuana patients and supporters attended WAMMfest to celebrate and learn about the herbal medicine Saturday.

Though medical marijuana patients were able to smoke their medicine at the event that featured music, crafts and speeches, that portion of the festivities was in question until this week. After failing to muster the votes to lift the city smoking ban in parks in a prior meeting, the council Tuesday agreed to do so. Only those with a medical marijuana identification card were allowed to smoke in a specially-designated tent Saturday.

Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana co-founder Valerie Corral said the event is an opportunity to normalize the use of medicinal marijuana and bring its members’ stories to the public eye.

“Almost 200 of our members have died in the past 15 years since our inception,” said Corral. “We do this work for a lot of reasons and for all aspects of illness. We get to be with people at the most important time in their lives when they are facing death. We are here to take care of each other and to be by their bedside and it takes you to places you can’t even imagine.”

WAMM is a collective of patients and caregivers that offers free medical marijuana to seriously ill patients with a doctor’s recommendation and aims to, provide hope and build community.
