I’ve been keeping a close eye on the Porter Ranch fire in the San Fernando Valley, having lived just blocks from Porter Ranch for 2 years in 2001-2002.

Powerful winds stoked the major wildfires just north of Los Angeles after destroying dozens of homes, forcing thousands to flee and killing at least two people. More than 2,000 firefighters battled a 5,000 acre fire in canyons on the west end of the valley and another 5,300-acre fire at the northeast end.

Relief could be coming soon, though, as the Santa Ana winds are expected to die down this evening, bringing much relief to the area.

The 118 Ronald Reagan Freeway was closed again Tuesday as smoke and flames approached the roadway.

The freeway was the scene of a fatal wreck Monday when a tow truck rear-ended a car and killed the driver. California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang said traffic stalled because firefighters were going by as fire neared the route.

A second fatality was discovered Monday in the rugged canyonlands below the mountainous Angeles National Forest. The victim was a man who appeared to be a transient living with a dog in a makeshift shelter, officials said. Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa said it would take some time to identify the victim.

Authorities confirmed more than three dozen mobile homes burned in the west end of the valley and 19 structures — some of them homes — were destroyed at the northeast end. Commercial sites burned in both fires.

Fire officials alerted other communities to the west in the Ventura County city of Simi Valley and south to Malibu, 20 miles away, as an ominous plume streamed over neighborhoods and far out to sea.

As an eerie orange moon set over Ventura, Calif., three glowing bands of fire continued to burn in the smoky sunrise in Los Angeles County. But firefighters started their day encouraged that the winds from the first major Santa Ana wind event of the season had decreased compared with yesterday at this time.

Officials continue to fight the three blazes – the Marek Fire, Porter Ranch and San Bernardino – from both the ground and the air. But Mark Savage, a Los Angeles County Fire captain told KABC-TV: “Even without high winds, we still have a lot of work to do.”

Channel 7 in Los Angeles has live web streaming with updates.

The winds, according to local reports, are only about 15 to 20 miles an hour, nothing like the 65-mile-per-hour gusts yesterday that stirred the embers and ignited the fires that scorched more than 12,000 acres of land and resulted in two deaths.

Nel fumo sono state analizzate fino a 4000 sostanze. Molte di esse irritano le cellule delle vie respiratorie, altre entrano nel sangue e intossicano cellule di ogni tipo. Alcuni esempi sono: acetato di etile, che causa irritazione di occhi, pelle, naso, gola e può dare origine a narcosi e dermatiti; acetato di isoamile, che causa irritazione di occhi, pelle, naso, gola e può dare origine a dermatiti e (in animali) narcosi; acetato di isobutile che causa irritazione di occhi, pelle, apparato respiratorio superiore e può generare emicrania, sonnolenza e anestesia.

Monossido di Carbonio (CO)

Un’altra sostanza contenuta nel fumo di sigaretta e particolarmente dannosa per l’organismo è l’ossido di carbonio, che si forma durante la combustione della sigaretta, perché nella parte interna arriva poco ossigeno. La sigaretta, infatti, dovrebbe fare la fiamma e non la brace.

Il monossido di carbonio (CO), che è un gas tossico, viene immesso nei polmoni con la respirazione, si lega all’emoglobina del sangue, data la sua capacità di legame 250 volte superiore a quella dell’ossigeno, la blocca, in una percentuale persino del 15% - 20% nel forte fumatore, e riduce così la possibilità del sangue di trasportare ossigeno ai tessuti. Il risultato di questo è che i tessuti sono parzialmente privati di ossigeno e il cuore deve lavorare con un impegno maggiore. Si ha una degenerazione adiposa dei vasi e la loro calcificazione, la pelle invecchia precocemente, i capelli sono più deboli e il rendimento fisico cala.

Effetti sull’organismo

Bronchite cronica: viene provocata da sostanze irritanti. Il fumo di sigarette, infatti, altera la struttura e la funzione delle vie aeree centrali e periferiche, degli alveoli, dei capillari, del sistema immunitario, dei bronchi e dei polmoni. L’esposizione di queste cellule alle tossine presenti nel fumo di tabacco potrebbe essere uno dei meccanismi che contribuiscono all’infiammazione nei fumatori, e quindi nella patogenesi delle malattie collegate al fumo.

Tumori e circolazione sanguigna: gli idrocarburi policiclici aromatici, contenuti nel catrame, e il Polonio 210 sono invece i principali responsabili dello sviluppo dei tumori polmonari e non solo. Il fumo è la causa principale di malattie coronariche in uomini e donne.

Arteriopatia obliterante: è una malattia dovuta al restringimento delle arterie delle gambe (ma anche di altre parti del corpo) e si manifesta con crampi alla gambe al minimo sforzo, anche dopo pochi metri di cammino.

Aneurisma aortico: è una dilatazione anormale di questa importantissima arteria. E’ pericoloso perchè può facilmente rompersi e la sua rottura provoca la morte immediata. Chi soffre di aneurisma aortico non dovrebbe fumare, perchè i decessi per rottura sono 6 volte più numerosi tra i fumatori che tra i non fumatori.

Aterosclerosi: è una malattia infiammatoria cronica delle arterie di grande e medio calibro che si instaura a causa dei fattori di rischio cardiovascolare quali fumo, ipercolesterolemia, diabete, ipertensione e obesità.

Cardiopatia ischemica: è causata dal monossido di carbonio e dalla nicotina. Probabilmente il cadmio, l’ossido nitrico e i cianuri di solfuro di carbonio hanno una loro importanza che non è ancora stata accertata quantitativamente. La cardiopatia ischemica è una delle malattie più frequenti nei paesi progrediti. I fumatori corrono un rischio di ammalarsi che è più del doppio rispetto a quello dei non fumatori. Si stima che il 20-25% dei problemi cardiovascolari siano legati al fumo. Il fumo, poi, stimolando una parte del nostro sistema nervoso (adrenergico) può favorire la vasocostrizione o gli spasimi delle arterie (soprattutto delle coronarie). Smettendo di fumare il rischio si riduce dopo solo un anno di astinenza e, dopo 20 anni, diventa simile (ma sempre un pò superiore) a quello di chi non ha mai fumato.

Yesterday was a great day for a drive, and an even better day to take in a car show like the Legends Car Club’s Car Show In The Park.  Everything from tuners to classics to livestock was there (the show was in conjunction with the town’s Sunflower Festival) which made for an interesting day.

This little red Porsche was a Volkswagen in a wolf’s clothing.  The replicar was good enough to fool anyone who didn’t notice the vee-dub powerplant sitting in the back, even if you’ve seen the original version of this Porsche.  In fact, if owners Elfie & Don Elias hadn’t opened the rear hood, no one would have clued in!

For most kids today, that first memorable car is usually something that involves a teeny 4-cylinder, 13″ wheels, and duct tape holding it all together.  For Dwayne Letkeman, this is his first taste of car ownership.  He purchase this ‘79 Buick Regal when he was fourteen, and has worked on it the past two years just to have a sweet ride when he can legally drive it.  The original small-block was swapped out for an Olds 455 c.i. big-block, bored .060″ over to make it a 466, then completely rebuilt.  It puts all that power to the custom wheels via a 3-speed auto and the stock rearend.

And the “custom” wheels?  Well, they’re actually the original wheels that came with the car back in 1979, but with a thick layer of black paint where GM originally sprayed it grey.  Here’s hoping this is the first of many wicked ‘rods for Dwayne!

Altona is farming country, so it only makes sense that big trucks like this ‘52 Dodge would take a day off for the show.  This particular worker looked like its chassis was replaced with a newer Dodge truck, then raised and stuffed with some good, hefty tires underneath it.  And just like the grill says, it even looks “Job Ready.”

Corvettes made their presence known, from Indy pace cars to Helene Kuhl’s ‘58 convertible.  It’s no surprise that there were so many fibreglass wonders at the show, given that the local dealer, West Park Motors, was there showing off a long list of Corvettes they’ve sold just this year.  Hey, for a small town dealership to sell anything but trucks and big family cars, let alone Corvettes, is an accomplishment in itself.

Chevelles are always beautiful, and this ‘69 Yenko clone is no exception.  This particular bow-tie beauty is rebuilt as a “clone” to the infamous Yenko Chevelles.  This one is even set up with a 425 hp 427-ci engine, just like the original COPO Chevys that rolled out of the Yenko dealership in the late 60’s.

Something is just a little different about this ‘57 Chevy.  It’s got the right chrome, the right shade of red, even the white paint is in the right spots.  Maybe it’s because this is a rarely-seen model 210 station wagon?  Nah, can’t be it….

When I said there was a little of everything at this show, I wasn’t kidding.  At the far corner of the park sat a wicked display of vintage snowmobiles, ranging from cute 1960’s Bombardiers to stylin’ 70’s Arctic Cats.  However, the most impressive thing going was this all-wheel-drive dirtbike.  Yes, that’s right, it has power going to the front AND rear wheels.  The whole thing is powered by a little Kohler single cylinder engine, stolen from a lawn tractor.  Apparently, that’s where they stole the bike’s good looks, too.  Then again, if you’ve got a 2-wheel drive dirtbike, you’re already cool enough.
