I was told by some that this movie was really good. I don’t know if I would go with the adjective, “really”. It’s a good movie. It rolls along kind of slowly. The plot and story line are pretty good. But there are too long of spaces between the good parts. The risk isn’t high enough to get you close to the edge. Sure, he gets beat up a little by “Morpheus” (Laurence Fishburne - The Matrix) but it just doesn’t grip you. Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) is a little thin too as far as his character. Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns, Blue Crush) is gorgeous and does pretty well as the love interest. Jim Sturgess (The Other Boleyn Girl) is ok. He has star potential, but this wasn’t his vehicle.

My Quick Rating: 2.5 random symbols out of 5: ^^.5

The movie 21 is out on DVD and is worth checking out. When 21 was first released to theaters, it too

The movie 21 is out on DVD and is worth checking out. When 21 was first released to theaters, it took me a couple weeks to muster up the interest to see it, but when I did, I was very pleasantly surprised. I had seen a documentary about the MIT poker club. The movie definitely glams it up a bit, but the core elements of the story are still the same. Plus, the movie has a kickass soundtrack. There are 27 songs in all, including some exceptional new finds and a few noteworthy remixes.

“Young Folks” by Peter, Bjorn & John instantly made it into heavy rotation on my personal playlist as soon as I heard it. Plus Soulwax’s remix of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is everything I like about an Rolling Stones remix. Reminds me of Dr. Dre’s take on the Rolling Stones’s “Miss You.”

There’s also some newfound music (at least for me), including MGMT’s “Time to Pretend,” “Big Ideas” by LCD Soundsystem, “Sister Self Doubt” by Get Shakes and Broadcast’s “Tender Buttons.” Not to mention Mark Ronson, Moby, Rihanna, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more.

Of the 27 songs in the movie 21, the studio soundtrack album captures 15 of them: not too bad by today’s standards, but far from perfect. But here’s the complete list of songs from 21 with videos from YouTube and links to iTunes and Amazon where you can snag them. Enjoy.

And here’s a sample of the music. It’s Young Folks. Most of the other videos are on ReelSoundtrack as well.

Inspired by the Yarn Harlot’s recent post “Inexplicable Knitter Behaviour“, I want

Inspired by the Yarn Harlot’s recent post “Inexplicable Knitter Behaviour“, I wanted to get silly with knitting out in the open yesterday. I carried my knitting and camera around with me all day and tried to capture some moments.

The Harlot says,

“Just like a bunch of knitters partying in a yarn shop, or travelling to a knitting event, taking over a coffee shop or filling a bookstore, it was inexplicable knitter behaviour. Next to the stereotypes, it’s probably the biggest thing that knitters face. They can’t define us, so they can’t understand us, so they ignore us, or stare.”

Anyone who has taken their knitting outside the safe confines of home has probably experienced some attention from non-knitters. At my knitting group, which meets at Starbucks, we often have people openly staring at us while they wait for their lattes. Sometimes they approach and admit that they too are knitters and wish they could sit and knit with us. Others just go ahead and stare, never saying a word.

Sometimes I’m brave enough to knit out in public alone. This was a big step for me: how would I handle those penetrating stares? What might people think or say to me? Mostly I keep my eyes on my knitting to discourage unwanted remarks, but every once in awhile I get a knowing smile from someone, a sort of code between us saying “I’m one too.”

Yesterday’s mission: to knit in public and take pictures while doing it. I started out trying to take pictures of myself knitting in my new craft room (oh yeah, we bought a house 2 weeks ago!). This is an interesting challenge when you are alone except for Mario, the plumber who is working on the bathtub downstairs. I got out a stepstool, fiddled with the automatic timer, and tried to get some shots in before Mario came to work on the upstairs bathroom. Here is what I managed to get:

Look at that scarf grow!

New Project Alert: I started a Kittyville hat (from the 1st SnB book) for a friend of mine who’s turning 2 in a couple of weeks. More on that later…

After working at the new house for a little bit, I decided to take a break and go to Borders to pick up the Harlot’s new book and knit a bit. Sadly, they didn’t have her book. Don’t they know there are crazed knitters out there who feel compelled to buy these books the day they are released? I was so thrown off by this snag that I returned to the car, completely forgetting that I had wanted to sit and knit in public! Ah, I guess a parking lot is technically public…

Two knitting sessions, and no truly inexplicable knitting behavior. Shoot. But then I remembered: the Sweetie and I were planning on going to see the movie 21 that night. And this hat is stockinette on circular needles, so it’s perfect for knitting in the dark!

Don’t take my popcorn!

The movie theater was packed, so I’m sure plenty of people noticed the annoyingly bright flash go off, and in turn saw me knitting. Mission accomplished.

I also give 2 thumbs up for the movie 21 that stars Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess. Michael Phillips, movie critic on Ebert and Roeper didn’t like it but Roeper had the good sense to recognize that this movie which raked in at least 23.7 million this weekend wasn’t that bad. I wouldn’t mind reading the book, Bringing Down The House which the movie was based on.

I love Vegas, so I was first in line to see the 21 Movie when it came out. On top of that, I went to Grad School for a year at Boston University, near MIT, around the time that the MIT BlackJack Team was successfully winning and I am good at math and always thought that I “should” be able to count cards if I practiced. The movie did not disapoint, and I would like to see it again. Kevin Spacey has been good in every movie I have seen and this one was no different.

The movie is a fictionalized version of the more boring truth, but the most disturbing parts of the movie are not true, so that is good. The leader of the group was not a corrupt teacher and there was no beating by the casinos. As a former pre-med student, I was relieved to read on Wikipedia that the real lead character was not a premed student but rather an EE major. No sane premed student would take such hard couses in Math and risk a low GPA and would probably not be able to do robotics but would be much more focused on Biology study. That part of the plot made no sense to me and was added as a noble motive for the main character to make the story more interesting and give the movie a start and an end.

On the other hand some good parts were not true; a video interview of one of the real players , Mike Aponte, reveals that the team only won $1 million over 6 years. While that sounds like a lot of money, that is only $30,000 a year for a team of 5 players. Not bad for a part time job but certainly not as much as a smart person can make doing things that actually help society.

Other glaring fictionalizations from what I can gather from Wikipedia: The team was not so secret at MIT, I don’t think there were any girls, many of the Vegas casinos shown in the movie had not been built in the 90s, and the team appears to have been mostly Asian in reality, not mixed like in the movie.

The movie captures the fun of Vegas in a unique way. I wouldn’t say it captures every part of the fun but it does a pretty good job.

You can read the bestseller of the story, Bringing Down the House and Busting Vegas to get more of the details.

Mike Aponte is creating a card counting tutorial website, but it currently is not up and running. You can practice basic strategy for free here.

The last few days have been a bit odd. It kind of fits I guess since my vacation is coming to an end

The last few days have been a bit odd. It kind of fits I guess since my vacation is coming to an end. Since the 360 is broken and shipped off I have mainly been on the PC doing all kinds of things.

Friday I woke up and wasted as much time as possible so Cloverfield would come faster. At about 10:15am I headed out to the theater to meet up with Andrew. We were going to the 11am showing (first of the day) to beat the crowds, mainly high school kids who all had finals which meant they would be getting our around 12 and 1pm. When I got there there were only a few cars in the parking lot. I waited for Andrew to show up and then we went in and got seats in the back row. While we were waiting we talked about Call of Duty 4. Once the previews started the first one reminded me of Hellboy. I turned to Andrew and told him that the second one was coming out later this year. I turned back to the screen and then saw Hellboy on the screen and was like “motherfucker.” It was the Hellboy 2 trailer. During the second trailer, for the movie 21, I chomped down on a gummy worm and chipped a tiny piece of my front right tooth. Nothing major but it still pissed me off. I plan to have the dentist check it out when I go the next time (whenever that is). Moving back to the movie, it was awesome. Plain and simple on of the coolest and creative movies I have seen. From start to finish it kept me engaged. Andrew seemed to get freaked at some parts with his “Holy shit” and “What the fuck” moments. I just laughed in my head. After the movie I headed home and dicked around on the computer. UPS dropped off the coffin for the Xbox 360 so I packed it up and dropped it off at the UPS store were the truck came just as I was leaving. I went home and then watched Stargate Atlantis.

I woke up Saturday morning around the same time as the day before. This time I was taking my brother to see Cloverfield. We headed over again, beating the crowds. Same trailers, same seats. My brother was a little less dramatic as Andrew but it was close. During the movie he told me that I can die in a fire and that he plans to get the DVD. I told him that we’ll see about it. After the movie I got home to an empty house. The parents were out and about and a little later my brother headed off to a friends house. I proceeded to do the usual internet things when I got a message from a Shacker to play Team Fortress 2. I never played it online before so I was a bit hesitant. I got the server info and jumped in. I chose the Pyro first to give it a shot. Turns out I suck with that class so I went Soldier. I got some good kills and the class seems to work with me. I got better as the day progressed and I made sure to tell Tammi that if I get obsessed with it she has to either beat me senseless or kill me. I do not want to get sucked in a game with school around the corner. After a few hours of that I IMed for the rest of the night.

This morning I fired up Team Fortress 2 and played a few rounds. Once I was done with that I watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Around 3:30pm I headed downstairs to watch the NFC Championship game. I was rooting for the Packers but the stupid Giants kicker saved his career in overtime. Fucker. After the game I reinstalled Oblivion but left out the mods this time (at least until I find a good, stable one so I don’t have to do my multi-disk reinstall being as I don’t have the one DVD GOTY pack). Now I’m just IMing and Shacking.

Tomorrow is my last day of vacation, sadly. I will be preparing for school (mainly English since it will be the only class I go to on Tuesday). Got to pack the car with my books, prepare binders, and get the parking pass in the glove box. I’ll probably also be playing Oblivion and Team Fortress 2. Other than that I don’t know. Got to return to the mindset of school so I don’t fall asleep in class like last semester. Like that will work.
