If you have kids or just love reading books for young people, then you know who Kate DiCamillo is. Her book Because of Winn-Dixie was a Newbery Honor Book, The Tiger Rising was a National Book Award finalist, and The Tale of Despereaux won the Newbery medal in 2003. Two of her books have made it to the big screen. The Tale of Despereaux opens in theaters December 19. Her latest book is for children is Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken, which came out in September 2008.

I saw you speak at the Loft a few years ago and you told the audience how you were rejected a lot-something like 400 times-before your editor discovered Because of Winn-Dixie in the slush pile at Candlewick Press. How did you smackdown your Inner Critic during that time and keep submitting again and again?

First, a clarification: all those rejections (some 470 or so) were for short stories, not for Winn-Dixie (a book which has led a happily charmed existence). But: how did I deal with all that rejection?  I had a dartboard. I would come home from work, open the mail, take out the most recent rejection letter, affix it to the dartboard, and throw darts at it until I felt better. Then I would take the story, package it up, write a new cover letter and send it out again.

How did you stand up to the pessimism that is so rampant among people who are stuck or not going after their dreams?

I was lucky enough to work with a man who greeted me each morning at the time clock with these words: What’s Plan B, babe?  What are you going to do when the writing doesn’t work out? What’s Plan B? I am deeply grateful to him. Every morning, I was properly enraged, ready to do battle, unwilling to give in, unwilling to give up.

Do you struggle with your Inner Critic?

Yes, but I’ve also learned to rely on my Inner Critic. I *need* that critic to show up for me when I am working on the 3rd draft and the 4th draft and the 5th draft, to help me to be ruthless, to show me what works and what doesn’t.

What kinds of things does your Inner Critic say to you?

Oh, terrible things.  One of its favorite utterances: Who do you think you are?

What is the worst thing it’s ever said to you?

Not printable.

So many people don’t celebrate their success. Have you ever said to yourself, “Damn, I’m good!” and done something special to mark your achievements?

No, I’ve never said that. I have said: I have been blessed. Please let me appreciate all these wonderful gifts that have been given to me. I’ve worked to be happy about what has happened to me.

Has there been a backlash within you to your success?

Sure, when people embrace what you do, you want to keep telling stories that will make them happy. And you can’t write to make anybody happy. It doesn’t work.

What techniques have you used to smackdown your Inner Critic day after day, book after book?

I get up early. The critic sleeps late. So, I go right from the bed to the computer, before that voice that says “no” is fully awake. Also, I keep showing up. The critic can make you lazy and afraid. I try to best it simply by showing up and doing my work, a little bit at a time.

Has your Inner Critic ever been useful?

Yes, profoundly so, in every rewrite I have done.

How do you motivate yourself to finish things?

I set manageable goals and then I stick to them.

Does a successful author like you continue to have fears and doubts that the Inner Critic beats you up with? If so, what are they?

Oh, I worry all the time: What next? What if I can’t?  

Is there a time when you were nervous or fearful and you did whatever it was you were nervous about anyway? How?

I’m nervous and fearful every day. I try to get around that by sitting down and doing the work in spite of the fear and the nerves.

What advice would you give to people who were stuck in inaction because they were afraid to take risks, hear criticism, etc.?

I would say that if this (writing) matters to you, then you are going to have to learn to take risks. It’s part of the job. And you are going to have to learn to listen to other people. That’s the job, too.

What are your favorite sources of inspiration?  

Music.  Books.  Art.  Long walks.  Coffee.  Dogs.  Friends.  Laughter.

What did you think the first time you saw your work on film?

I thought: the world is a strange and miraculous place and I am glad to be here.

Date Movie isn’t quite as successful in keeping the gags at the same pace they came in the Scary Movies, but it will certainly satisfy those with a taste for tasteless humor. The wisp of a story involves fat girl Julia Jones, played by Alyson Hannigan, who quickly becomes as thin and pretty as she was in the American Pie movies and on TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You’ll lose count how many movie references writer/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer throw in her path as she searches for true love in a world gone mad. Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Meet the Fockers, King Kong, Lord of the Rings, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and Kill Bill, are just a few of the movies that get unkindly homage. There’s also plenty of flatulence, mild sexual ribaldry, and the kind of bad taste humor that will utterly delight the pubescent and teenage audience this movie was made for. –Ted Fry

Problem is, Smalls’s home run sends his stepfather’s “Babe Ruth” autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that’s patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called “The Beast.” Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with “The Beast” and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. The Alien Quadrilogy is a nine-disc boxed set devoted to the four Alien films. Although previously available on DVD as the Alien Legacy, here they have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and picture. For anyone who hasn’t been in hypersleep for the last 25 years, this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and “special edition” form.

Alien (1979) was so perfect it didn’t need fixing, and Ridley Scott’s 2003 director’s cut is fiddling for the sake of fiddling. Watch it once, then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely, the special edition of James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) is the definitive version, though it’s nice to finally have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternative Alien 3 (1992). This isn’t a “director’s cut”–David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release–but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered, and finished off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it’s truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann’s character adds considerable depth to story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different. Alien: Resurrection (1997) always was a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the special edition just makes it eight minutes longer.

The Alien Quadrilogy offers the first and fourth films with DTS soundtracks, the others having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary track that lends insight into the creative process–though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the first Alien DVD release are missing here.

Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented in full-screen with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills, and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by the Lord of the Rings extended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including an hourlong documentary and even all the extras from the old Alien laserdisc. “Exhaustive” hardly beings to describe the Alien Quadrilogy, a set that establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time. –Gary S. Unfortunately for our mates in the land of Oz, tourism is down, but there is hope that the new Baz Lurhmann’s three-hour epic about “God’s Country” will revive business and draw attention back to the country’s fledgling movie industry.

Having cost Rupert Murdoch and 20th Centruy Fox over $130 million to make, the Hugh Jackman/Nicole Kidman flick is the biggest thing from Oz to hit movie screens in a long time and their are high hopes that it will revitalize the movie/tourism industry the way Crocodile Dundee did in the 1980s.

I’ll probably se this movie, but not at the theatres. Three hours is too long for me without having to take breaks. Call it A.D.D., but after a couple of hours, I just can’t focus anymore. Hopefully the rest of the world will go and watch it in the theatres as the Aussies’ need all the help they can get these days.

They decide to test whether this is the real thing by agreeing to split up, then meet in six months atop the Empire State Building. Is there anyone who can resist that setup or the tragic romantic mishap that nearly splits them up? Can you keep dry eyes during the famous finale? Some prefer the original (with Charles Boyer); practically no one liked the underrated 1994 remake with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. While occasionally a shade slow, this one soars on Grant’s charm and Kerr’s noble suffering. –Marshall Fine

Julie Andrews in the heartwarming true story that has become a cinematic treasure. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.” Julie Andrews is Maria, the spirited, young woman who leaves the convent and becomes a governess to the seven unruly charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children and their father but when Nazi, Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced to attempt a daring escape with her new family.

When Julie Andrews sang “The hills are alive with the sound of music” from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin’ in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line “To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray”) and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It’s not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

It doesn’t matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.

The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren’t enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic’s heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It’s a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of “I Have Confidence”), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp’s youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film’s remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.

On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary “My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers.” But it’s really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film’s biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, “On Location with The Sound of Music,” in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the “Sound of Music tours” that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there’s a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary “From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion,” in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film’s passionate fans. What’s touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow’s screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.

What’s Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you’ll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, “Salzburg Sight and Sound.” Carr’s new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It’s not a great work of art, but it’s a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features–the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight–and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow’s. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they’re not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn’t the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it’s the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. –David Horiuchi

Cast Away is a good movie that wants to be much better. While director Robert Zemeckis’s earlier film Contact achieved a kind of mainstream spiritual significance, Cast Away falls just short of that goal. That may explain why the film’s most emotionally powerful scene involves the loss of an inanimate object, even as it presents a heart-rending dilemma in its very human final act.

It’s three movies in one, beginning when punctuality-obsessed Federal Express systems engineer Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) departs on Christmas Eve to escort an ill-fated flight of FedEx packages. Following a mid-Pacific plane crash, movie number two chronicles Chuck’s four-year survival on a remote island, totally alone save for a Wilson volleyball (aptly named “Wilson”) that becomes Chuck’s closest “friend.” Movie number three leads up to Chuck’s rescue and an awkward encounter with his ex-girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt, in a thankless role), for whom Chuck has seemingly risen from the grave.

It’s fascinating to witness Chuck’s emerging survival skills, and Hanks’s remarkable physical transformation is matched by his finely tuned performance. With slow, rhythmic camera moves and brilliant use of sound, Zemeckis wisely avoids the postcard prettiness of The Black Stallion and The Blue Lagoon to emphasize the harshness of Chuck’s ascetic solitude, and this stylistic restraint allows Cast Away to resonate more than one might expect. Even the final scene–which feels like a crowd-pleasing compromise–offers hope without shoving it down our throats. Beautiful restaurant owner Amanda Shelton (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is falling head over heels for handsome, hard-driving executive Tom Bartlett (Sean Patrick Flanery). Unfortunately, Tom is too busy to recognize that she’s truly the girl of his dreams until Amanda puts him under her tantalizing spell!

Call it Buffy the Culinary Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who usually runs around staking vampires and fighting demons, turns cute and cuddly as an aspiring chef in this magical-realist comedy that borrows a page–heck, whole chapters–from Like Water for Chocolate. Out at the market one day, Gellar stumbles on both a magical crab and the babelicious Sean Patrick Flanery who, wouldn’t you know it, is opening up a posh restaurant at Bendel’s department store (actually, the two have been brought together by fairy godfather Christopher Durang). Odd and implausible circumstances give these two cuties more opportunities to moon at each other, and suddenly Gellar’s cooking takes off–turns out all her nicey-nice feelings towards Flanery are going into her cooking, with the help of that quiet but powerful little crab. Gellar’s almost-closed restaurant starts to thrive, and her desserts begin making everyone horny. A cute premise that never really takes off, Simply Irresistible glides along on Gellar’s charisma alone; in her off hours, Buffy certainly can be the lighthearted girl next door, and Gellar works to give some depth to her one-dimensional character. Flanery, though, while appealing at times, plays up his character’s commitment-phobia to irritating degrees. Chock full of fairy-tale elements that never really come together (is that crab really necessary?), Irresistible does boast charming performances by Patricia Clarkson and Dylan Baker as Flanery’s secretary and boss, respectively. However, it’s a little odd to see these two, who scored raves for two serious and harrowing art-house flicks (Clarkson in High Art, Baker in Happiness) doing the light-and-fluffy romantic comedy thing. They’re two of the very few ingredients that occasionally make this souffl� of a movie rise; at the end, however, it’s flat as a pancake. –Mark Englehart

When the cast is removed from his severely broken arm, clumsy 12-year old Henry Rowengartner (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is shocked to find his arm has become a 100 mile per-hour thunderbolt. His throw from the bleachers directly to home plate alerts the last place Chicago Cubs and before you can shout “play ball!” he is signed as their new ace pitcher. With a few pointers from an aging star pitcher (Gary Busey) young Henry actually manages to pull of the impossible.

Baseball movies seem like a sure thing, combining the drama of the game with positive values. So it’s too bad this pleasant film takes the field in the most superficial way. Henry, the worst player in Little League, suffers an injury that miraculously heals as the strongest pitching arm in the world. His life becomes a kid’s dream with a career in the Majors, but nothing really happens. His strength cannot hide his lack of skill, yet audiences love him, probably to support subplots such as the team being rescued from bankruptcy and Mom’s boyfriend turning bad. Small attempts are made to create character, relationships, and themes. Gary Busey, as a burnt-out pitcher named Rocket, finds a family. Henry learns the importance of being a kid, not to mention a surprisingly cynical lesson about stardom, when Rocket says, “One day your gift will be gone.” Mom learns Henry always respected her and Henry learns to rely on himself when his “power” disappears in the climactic game. Sadly, a fine cast including Dan Hedaya, John Candy, and ’40s comedian Eddie Bracken is given nothing to work with. Worse yet, director Daniel Stern plays Phil, who suffered a head injury that left him an insult to comedy fans as well as the mentally challenged. Kids who love baseball films where kids are the heroes and the comedy is dumb will enjoy sitting through Rookie of the Year, but I wouldn’t expect them to pull it off the shelf too often. –Lloyd Chesley

There’s not much plot to The Boondock Saints–it’s mostly a series of violent scenes in which the boys are partially ingenious and partially lucky. The movie seems to want to provoke debate about vigilantism, but the scenario is too implausible to stir any real controversy. The peculiar mix of earnestness and machismo will not appeal to everyone, but it’s certainly unique and may acquire a cult following. –Bret Fetzer

In the tumultuous aftermath of the Civil War, Union Calvary officer John Henry Thomas takes his heroic men west while southerner James Langdon takes his soldiers to Mexico. Hudson is a Southern gentleman; Wayne commanded the Yankee cavalry at Shiloh, where Hudson’s brother died. Nevertheless, Rock, with his extended family, and Duke, with his troop of cowboys and 3,000 horses to sell to Emperor Maximilian, soon join forces to outgun banditos and beam paternally over the budding romance between their respective daughter and son (an adopted Indian played by footballer Roman Gabriel with Crystal Gayle hair). Lingering North-South animosities are celebrated in an obligatory communal fistfight in the Andrew V. McLaglen manner, and the showdown with both Maximilian’s lancers and the rebel Juaristas is disconcertingly perfunctory. –Richard T. Jameson

A man named Clark (Dale Midkiff, Air Bud: World Pup) makes a proposal: If Marty will enter into a platonic marriage with him, he’ll pay for her passage back east in the spring. What Clark needs is a mother, however temporary, for his willful tomboy daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak, Beyond the Prairie, Part 2). Missie fights Marty’s presence fiercely while Clark, though supportive, speaks few words, and Marty suspects she’s made a terrible mistake–but time reveals otherwise. Love Comes Softly, based on the popular Christian novel by Janette Oke, is a romance, but Landon carefully avoids any bodice-ripping histrionics. Problems get solved perhaps a little too easily, but the movie is cleanly written, pleasantly understated, and respectful to its characters. For many viewers, Love Comes Softly will be a welcome change from overheated secular love stories. –Bret Fetzer

Aided by an unwitting colleague (Oliver Platt), Douglas can save his daughter by extracting crucial information from a traumatized patient (Brittany Murphy), while his bedridden wife (Famke Janssen) and a tenacious detective (Jennifer Esposito) do their part to solve the mystery. Fleder pushes all the routine buttons with effectively somber style, so Don’t Say a Word will satisfy anyone with a preference for high-anxiety thrillers, even as it grows increasingly conventional; it’s entertaining without being particularly original.
