20th century boys (and 21st century boys). Simply incredible. Though some say that it’s not as good as Monster, I’d beg to differ.

Author created several mysteries that would all be faithfully and satisfyingly answered over the span of all 200 plus chapters. No deux ex machina or sudden endings, that tends to plague several great manga *cough*Death Note *cough* Hikaru no go*cough*. All characters had their shining moments and were colourful in their own way. My favourite was perhaps Koizumi Kyoko. She’s just an ordinary girl, who simply said one wrong thing at the worst place at the worst time. She has neither abilities, powers, impressive lineage, willpower, charisma, bravery nor motivation. She just wants nothing to do with all this and wants to save her own life. Yet, she keeps getting dragged back into the whole situation by the others who actually give a damn about saving the world. Poor girl. Well, at least she becomes this bowling queen (which again was not her choice, god forced her to be).

The first of the 20th century boys trilogy is out, maybe I’ll go catch it someday.

In the meantime, I had wanted to find another top-ranking manga to kill time with. Was settled on Berserk and went to onemanga.com just to see this:

เพลงส่วนใหญ่ของสครับบ พูดเรื่องรอบๆ ตัว ความรัก การเติบโต เดินทาง ค้นหา แต่ที่น่าสนใจอยู่ตรงที่เอาเรื่องรอบตัวมาทำเป็นเพลงได้อย่างน่าฟัง และสอดแทรกความจริงในชีวิตที่ไม่ยากเกินควรไว้ด้วย

การ์ตูนเรื่องนี้ดังมากทั้งที่ญี่ปุ่นและบ้านเรา ดังจนมีคนเอาไปทำเป็นหนัง ท่ามกลางความงงเต๊กของคนที่เคยอ่านการ์ตูน ว่ามันจะทำออกมาเป็นหนังได้เช่นไร

เนื้อหาของหนังโดยรวมเหมือนในหนังสือ แต่ด้วยความที่การ์ตูนมหากาพย์เรื่องนี้มีพล็อตหลักและพล็อตรองเยอะไปหมด ไม่นับตัวละครที่ดาหน้ากันออกมาให้เรารู้จักเป็นกองทัพ ทำให้เรื่องราวยากที่จะเข้าใจเข้าไปใหญ่ ยิ่งถ้าเป็นคนที่ไม่เคยอ่านการ์ตูนมาก่อน คงถึงกับต้องอาศัยโรงหนังเป็นโรงแรมงีบหลับกันเลยทีเดียว

หนังเรื่องนี้พยายามรักษาความเป็นหนังสือไว้ชนิดที่เรารู้สึกว่าการ์ตูนกำลังเคลื่อนไหวมีชีวิตขึ้นมา และช่วยรวมเอาการ์ตูนยี่สิบสี่เล่ม มาควบรวมเป็นหนังไตรภาค ได้เหมือนในหนังสือมากๆ แต่ไม่สนุกเหมือนในหนังสือ

นี่อาจเป็นประเด็นที่ต้องคุยกันต่อไปว่า ทำหนังได้เหมือนต้นฉบับในหนังสือ แต่ไม่สนุกเหมือนหนังสือ แล้วจะดีหรือ

ถึงจะออกมาได้น่าผิดหวัง แต่ก็ยังมีอะไรดีๆ หลายอย่างที่อยากพูดถึง ทั้งดนตรีประกอบบางช่วงบางตอน การแสดงที่ให้อารมณ์ความเป็นการ์ตูนญี่ปุ่นจัดๆ การแคสคนมาได้เหมือนตัวการ์ตูนมาก และงานสร้างที่เหมือนในการ์ตูนชนิดใช้หน้าหนังสือการ์ตูนมาทำเป็นสตอรี่บอร์ดกันเลยทีเดียว

คนชอบ 20th century boys อย่างไรก็ต้องไปดู แต่คนที่ไม่เคยอ่านการ์ตูน หรือรู้เรื่องมาก่อน คงดูไม่รู้เรื่องแน่ๆ
อย่างไรก็ดี คงต้องรอภาคสองของหนังเรื่องนี้ ถึงแม้ว่าจะไม่ชอบเอาเสียเลยก็ตาม ♥

เป็นหนึ่งในการ์ตูนมังงะของญี่ปุ่นที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างสูง มียอดจำหน่ายกว่า 20 ล้านฉบับตลอด 8 ปี (ค.ศ. 1999-2007) ด้วยความยาวต่อเนื่อง 22 เล่ม โดยมี 21st Century Boys เป็นภาคจบแถมท้ายอีก 2 เล่ม อีกทั้งยังถูกนำไปแปลในอีก 11 ประเทศ

La buona notizia per gli appassionati di eiga e` che nella citta` giuliana  saranno presentati in anteprima italiana due film giapponesi di ottimo livello e molto attesi: 20th Century Boys di Yukihiko Tsutsumi e Nightmare Detective 2 di Shinya Tsukamoto. Se qualcuno passasse da quelle parti…..

Des acteurs enfants épatants et… ressemblants !

C’est à l’occasion de l’ouverture de la 14ème édition de l’Etrange Festival de Strasbourg, hier au soir, que j’ai pu découvrir le premier volet de 20th Century Boys, la trilogie nippone tirée du manga fleuve homonyme d’Urasawa. L’atmosphère très particulière que l’on trouve dans un festival, et l’attrait lui aussi tout particulier qu’exerce ce manga ont sans doute influé sur l’appréciation que j’ai eu du film. Ceci dit, je ne vais certainement pas chercher à bouder mon plaisir.

L’histoire de 20th Century Boys se déroule sur au moins trois périodes différentes (fin des années 60, fin des années 90 et le XXIème siècle après “Ami”) Tout débute de nos jours avec la mise en parallèle d’une secte dominée par un gourou étrange, Ami, et la multiplication d’attentats bio-terroristes aux quatre coins du monde. Quand Kenji, homme moyen, tenancier d’une petite épicerie, découvre que la secte d’Ami reprend le signe de ralliement créé par sa bande de copains presque trente ans plus tôt, il va se retrouver embrigader dans une histoire de fin du monde et de sauvetage de l’humanité qu’il a lui-même imaginée, enfant, et consignée dans un cahier de prédictions.
La force du manga résidait dans l’imbrication étroite entre le passé, le présent, et un futur qui fait froid dans le dos. Il reprenait également certaines scories de la société japonaise (la multiplication des sectes, les attentats au gaz sarin), tout en rendant hommage à ses propres héros (les mangakas et les rockeurs) Et les personnages étaient passionnants.

L’adaptation cinématographique, qui suit les six premiers volumes du manga, a des défauts. Il y a des longueurs (notamment sur la fin) dues non pas à de mauvais choix scénaristiques (ceux-là sont une réussite complète) mais à un petit manque de rythme, associé à une utilisation de temps en temps limite de la musique. Cette dernière est d’ailleurs pour moi le seul gros défaut du film, notamment dans la multiplication de certaines scènes “pleines de sens”, avec force violons et lyrisme qui tranche franchement avec les scores plus rock d’autres scènes, et nettement plus appropriés à l’histoire. On peut ajouter à cela quelques tics hérités de la culture télévisuelle japonaise (quelques scènes surjouées notamment), et des effets spéciaux un peu “cheap” (par rapport à une grosse production américaine) et de temps en temps maladroits

Ce sont les seuls défauts du film et, au regard des réussites, ils sont minimes ! Ainsi si les attentats à l’aéroport d’Haneda sentent l’incrustation informatique à plein nez, le robot de fin est quant à lui très réussi. Il suffit d’accepter les limites budgétaires du film qui, de toute façon, se concentre, comme le manga, bien plus sur ses personnages et sur l’atmosphère décalée et parano qui se développe autour d’eux. Les apparitions d’Ami font preuve à ce propos de partis-pris visuels plutôt rares dans la production nipponne actuel, sauf si l’on regarde du côté des films d’horreur. Idem pour les morts, on est loin de la production tout public auquel on aurait pu avoir droit.
De plus, les passages du présent au passé se font très naturellement, sans artificialité, et avec une simplicité de lecture agréable pour le spectateur.
Mais la grande réussite du film reste le casting. Les acteurs, enfants et adultes, ont été choisis avec soin, et non seulement sont-ils très ressemblants à leurs personnages d’origine, mais en plus, ils jouent bien (à une ou deux scènes près, mais sur plus de deux heures…) Yukiji, malgré ce qui pouvait transparaître dans les bandes-annonces, n’a rien d’une Japonaise soumise, Yoshitsune a l’air penaud du cadre moyen parfait, Mon-chan parle (presque) allemand, Otcho est vraiment classe, ils sont tous bons.

Je me demande si ce film sera autant apprécié par quelqu’un qui ne connaît pas le manga original, mais pour moi il m’a semblé bien et simplement écrit (la plus grosse gageure), et les acteurs rendent bien le côté charismatique de leurs personnages. Pour avoir testé d’autres adaptations live de manga (notamment le tristement célèbre film de Death Note), je peux affirmer que 20th Century Boys est une vraie réussite, et l’abîme est large entre ce film-là et certains autres.

Il sortira sur les écrans français en janvier 2009, vous avez deux mois pour lire le manga.

BIOGRAFÍA

Naoki Urasawa nace el 2 de enero de 1960 en Tokyo. Durante su época de instituto reparte su tiempo libre entre el manga y la música. Posteriormente se licencia en económicas por la Universidad de Meisei, y comienza a escribir manga. En 1982 se le otorga el “Premio al mejor mangaka” de Shogakukan, una de las tres grandes editoriales japonesas, y a partir de ahí comienza su carrera como profesional del manga. 1983 es el año en el que ve la luz su obra debut, Beta, una historia de ciencia ficción. Su colaboración en 1984 con Kazuo Koike en la obra Pinneaple Army (donde se narran las aventuras de Jedd Goshi, ex-combatiente del Vietnam, que forma parte de Civilian Military Aids, grupo antiterrorista) le supone su primer contacto con el éxito. Yawara (Ginger en Occidente) aparece en 1987, convirtiéndose en su primera obra importante que lo da a conocer a nivel internacional. Por esta obra (inspirada en la vida de Isao Inokuma, judoka japonesa que ganó la medalla de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokyo en 1964) se le concederá el “35º Premio Shogakukan” en 1990. En 1988 comienza Master Keaton, con guión de Hokusei Katsuhika, manga que realiza simultáneamente a Yawara. En 1999 recibe el galardón más prestigioso de Japón, el Premio Tezuka, por su manga Monster, inquietante thriller de gran fuerza narrativa. El talento de Urasawa llega a su cénit con Nijûseiki Shonen (20th Century Boys), obra madura donde los recuerdos de infancia de sus protagonistas son la clave para desenmascarar a un terrorista que pretende destruir la Tierra. Inicia, en 2004, Pluto, retomando un antiguo personaje de Osamu Tezuka, una apuesta arriesgada que ha tenido enorme éxito en Japón.

Mas allá del manga

Naoki Urasawa tiene su corazón dividido entre el manga y el rock. Siempre ha querido ser un gran guitarrista, por ello no es de extrañar que en su lujosa casa, situada en la parte alta de Tokyo, haya acondicionado un local de ensayo, donde se aisla cada día para dejar escapar sus emociones a través del sonido de su guitarra. Él mismo confiesa “mi sueño sería sacar un álbum, pero tendría que encontrar una discográfica que quisiera producirlo“. Su mayor tesoro es una guitarra dedicada por los Rolling Stones.

Estilo Urasawa

Urasawa mantiene un alto ritmo de producción que no por ello va en detrimento de la calidad de guiones o ilustraciones. Es habitual en él el compaginar la publicación de dos series a un mismo tiempo. En parte, esto es posible gracias a su equipo de asistentes, siempre bajo su supervisión contínua.

Con un estilo más bien clásico, si algo hace resaltar sus historias son sus excelentes guiones, que lo han convertido en referente internacional en cuanto al thriller (Monster recibió el “Premio al Mejor Guión” en el 2003, en el Festival de Angulema, y 20th Century Boys el “Premio a la Mejor Serie” en el 2004, también en el mismo festival). Engancharse a sus obras es tan fácil como leer tan solo el primer capítulo de las mismas, pues consigue despertar el interés y la curiosidad del lector dejándolo siempre deseoso por conocer la continuación de la trama. La escenografía de sus viñetas se dibuja con especial cuidado para no romper el ambiente de intriga, con golpes de efecto en el final de cada episodio, confiriendo toques inquietantes a sus obras. Urasawa da muestras de una especial habilidad en el diseño de las facciones de sus personajes, sencillas pero con personalidad propia aún así, dominando un amplio repertorio de expresiones destacable en particular en el transcurso de los diálogos.

En tan sólo 10 años, Kurasawa ha conseguido que lleguen a considerarle el nuevo Dios del Manga, encendiendo con sus mangas pasiones que van más allá de la moda del momento.

Because I write tons of reviews but never finish any of them, I’ve decided to just skip to the important bits and forget the flowery adjectives. Here are a bunch of random stuff I’ve found to be good, bad and interesting.

Bellini’s (italian restaurant)

• the good: spaghetti carbonara, the “authentic” italian feel. 10/10
• the bad: tv in the dining area
• the interesting: waiters fluent in italian. they offered us free shots of rhum or brandy after the meal. i wonder why.
• the verdict: good.

Krispy Kreme (doughnut shop)

• the good: the ambiance.
• the bad: hot chocolate drink, “chocolate chocolate” shake, classic glazed doughnut, all sucky. it seems the theme of the place is “too sweet and nothing else”.
• the interesting: it’s interesting that a lot of people hype it up so much. someone said their donuts go good with their coffee, but since i don’t drink coffee i give the place a 2/10.
• the verdict: bad.

Persepolis (french animated movie)

• the good: the endearing character, the warm storytelling, and the unique perspective into a war-torn culture.
• the bad: it’s not a “cool” film, not something you’ll be talking about hours after. it’s an art film, meant to be watched with art film expectations.
• the interesting: it’s a first-person story of an iranian girl, told in french
• the verdict: good.

Google Notebook (online application)

• the good: nice way to organize online research. simple and useful interface.
• the bad: needs a plugin for firefox and ie, and the plugin sometimes messes up. interface can still be improved in cases involving lots of notes and notebooks.
• the interesting: i can now collect the random things i read online, which are often useless but interesting.
• the verdict: interesting.

20th Century Boys + 21st Century Boys (manga series)

• the good: suspenseful, scary, grand in both story and scale. a 10/10, and an instant favorite.
• the bad: some events are simply unrealistic, requiring some suspension of disbelief.
• the interesting: the first of the 6 billion yen live-action movie trilogy just released in japan last august.
• the verdict: good.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater (PS2 Game)

• the good: different types of playability - stealth, sabotage, shootouts, one-on-one duels, mecha demolitions, sniper battles, survival quests and puzzles. add one hot babe, hilariously corny dialogues, conspiracy theories, a well thought-out plot, one ghost walk and tons of kero keroppi and you have yourself an instant classic.
• the bad: sometimes the dialogue is just too corny.
• the interesting: the story is the prequel to all the previous Metal Gear games, including the ones in the classic NES consoles. the character is Big Boss, before he became legendary villain of the series. sort of like Anakin before he became Darth Vader.
• the verdict: good.

Cafe Bola (restaurant)

• the good: the interior design and the weird chairs are nice.
• the bad: their service sucks, and their food has degraded considerably since a year ago. it’s embarrassing to have recommended the place to my friends.
• the interesting: last year their food was quite good, i have no idea what went wrong. although it’s also possible that my standards have been raised, although this seems unlikely.
• the verdict: bad.

French Toast (french toast)

• the good: instant breakfast or snack, easy to prepare and consume. moderately filling.
• the bad: i don’t measure my ingredients, so i sometimes mess it up. my last batch was a little soggy and undercooked.
• the interesting: it’s french toast.
• the verdict: interesting.

Game Crab (board game cafe)

• the good: board games are surprisingly interesting. i’ve enjoyed three of the three games I tried: World of Warcraft (the board game), Power Grid and Settlers of Catan
• the bad: their food sucks, and no matter how fun the games the games may be, it’s not something i would pay for.
• the interesting: tuesday nights are free for up to three guests of members.
• the verdict: interesting.

Sebastian’s Dark Chocolate Midnight (ice cream)

• the good: delish, cheaper than others of the same caliber (250/pint)
• the bad: limited distribution even in Metro Manila
• the interesting: it’s just a short walk away from where i’m staying.
• the verdict: good.

After Dark (novel)

• the good: excellent prose, as always. Murakami offers a vivid full-color view into the lives of a host of characters as they trod their way through the hours before daybreak. the images his words form in my imagination are mesmerizing.
• the bad: the plot, as usual in Murakami works, is not so much the focus of the novel, and hence might not be up to some readers’ standards.
• the interesting: there’s some lesson to be learned here, or some metaphorical meaning to it, but it escapes me. i’m simply at awe of his literary powers. i want to write like him.
• the verdict: good.

Tropic Thunder (comedy movie)

• the good: loads of hilarious bits
• the bad: lots of dead air too. like the dancing tom cruise.
• the interesting: the word “retard” is used in liberal amounts and the “developmentally challenged” are parodied to comic effect. obviously this is not a movie for the politically correct and the outrageously sensitive. also, blood, death and gore are used to similar comic effect. not for the queasy.
• the verdict: interesting.

Sicko (a documentary)

• the good: informative. it effectively provides a contrast between the U.S. health care policy versus universal health care in Canada, France and England. it also effectively highlights the shortcomings and “evils” of the health care system and the politicians behind it.
• the bad: apparently one-sided, as documentaries are oft to be, the pros of U.S. health care and the cons of universal health care are not represented. also, i would like to check some peer reviews to verify the legitimacy of the featured claims.
• the interesting: information is always interesting.
• the verdict: interesting.

Taiji desu, trying out Juice’s new iPhone (: she got it like 3 days ago n it’s like the big thing in da house(: her bro also got 1 too same as hers it’s a little hard for a dog like me to use >_< because I got biggie paws!!! hard to type na …. woof !!!! Juice went to watch 20th century boys on sat…. the story was a little here n there neither could I or Juice understood the movie …. will talk more about the movie in my web post … it’s so hard to type on iPhone for biggie paws….

Caught the movie 20th Century Boys today… I have not watched any Japanese films before, and I have not read any manga either, so i went in not knowing what to expect. I guess most would have some forms of comparison of the movie with Deathnote, but i didn’t catch that, so i guess no form of camparison for me.

Anyway, before the movie, i heard very mixed reviews about the show, so i thought i would just go in and see for myself. It was pretty enjoyable i must say. I like the storyline and the way the flashbacks were used. I particularly liked the characters that the young kids played - very very well depicted i must say. Each and everyone of the quirkiness of the characters were well brought out. The CG left much to be desired though. The explosion scene wasn’t very convincing. I didn’t like the way the story wrapped up so fast on the thought-to-be end of the world day. That i thought was a bit too sloppily done.

The film still left its cliffhanger of course. The film character Kanna’s grew up and the Friends cult still exists beyond 2000, so who exactly is still behind it? I guess i will be heading back to the theaters when the second part of the trilogy is out.

This is the first japan movie that i’ve watched at the cinema, and i did quite enjoy the experience. I would fairly say, i enjoyed this more than Max Payne (some reviews on the net said Max Payne is a PAIN to watch… *pun intended*), though it might just be the sci-fi freak in me speaking. =p

I bought a CD on my way home for my hibernation away from the world (for the lack of a better word). I will be hiding and retreating into my cave hole of my room to study and MUG for exams. I really don’t like it, BUT it is necessary, so do it i shall.

It’s gonna be pretty tiring, but like Ning always say: This too, shall pass…

Actualmente sigo, en manga y en anime, la obra Monster del mangaka Naoki Urasawa (responsable de éxitos como 20th Century Boys, o Yawara! –en Catalunya Ginger o Cinturó Negre-).

Monster arranca en la Alemania de 1986, con la presentación del Dr. Tenma. Kenzô Tenma es un joven neurocirujano cuyo exitoso futuro (brillante en su trabajo y prometido con la hija del director del hospital) se ven truncados cuando decide anteponer un paciente a las órdenes de sus jefes. Prefiere operar a un niño que llegó a antes a urgencias, que al alcalde. Esta simple decisión de “operar par orden de llegada” parece que va echarle la vida al garete: el director lo va apartando de la “autopista del éxito”, y su prometida le lanza el anillo de compromiso.

Pero de repente, aquellos que le han cerrado las puertas, son asesinados…

friday evening - dearest said he’s going to bring me to relax after work cos it’s been a long and tiring week for both of us. so i took off from work a little earlier and we went to vivocity. had a hard time deciding what to have for dinner and finally settled for sushi tei.

then we went to catch a movie: 20th century boys.

this movie is said to be a bigger hit than the death note in japan. and i love death note. but before watching 20th century boys, i’ve heard not so good reviews about it. but we went to catch the movie instead.

and all i can say is - it sucks!
well, to be fair to the movie, it sucks because we were feeling really uncomfortable in the theater.

i tell you, we’ve always been to cathay theaters of late. and the last time we went GV some months ago, i mentally told myself never to go GV again, cos the seats are just not deep enough, very uncomfortable. the seats forces you to sit pretty upright, not enough buttock space to slouch in a comfortable position. but too bad, i kinda forgot about it and we ended up in GV anyway. and it really sucks.

and the movie… well, the storyline is pretty good. but it gets draggy. and at one point (during the supposedly most exciting part), i actually dozed off. at the end of the show, dearest and i looked at each other in bewilderment. cos we didn’t understand how the young girl survived.

oh well, i think she survived merely because there are 2 more sequels to this movie. haha.

so yeah, a not so fulfilling movie session. no more GV for us! never!

on saturday, dearest brought me to the precious moments annual event. i’ve never been to one and frankly i was REALLY disappointed with it. the previous years events’ seemed to be more ‘exciting’. this year, albeit cheaper, was like a warehouse sale! with like less than 20 figurines on sale. we looked around for ten minutes, and quickly picked one to buy (since we are already there, can’t go home empty handed right? but the figurine really quite sweet lar) and queued up to pay.

then we headed to the buffet, which we didn’t have anything cos the food looks so tasteless. in the end, we did a kiddy thing. dearest was forced into it - taking photos with the precious moments mascots!

pardon my ugly legs - i didn’t think they will film the whole body and i’m the kind who just cannot stand straight! haha…

after the event, we went to buy some ice cream and went home to nua cos dearest was soooo tired. dearest promised to eat ice cream with me together but then he dozed off! hmmph… so i ended up eating it all by myself. and then i joined him - to sleep. hahahah… 2 lazy bums, wasting our saturday away like that.

we went for dinner after the long nap and then went pasir ris to watch liverpool against wigan. i wasn’t really in the mood for soccer, so i played around with my camera and his handphone.

i took this because i love the blue lights which makes the place pretty romantic.

our favorite beer - erdinger.

dearest drinks his beer (regardless of hoegarden or calsberg or erdinger, any beer!) with lots of ice…

and when it gets really boring… i bluetoothed some pictures which dearest took several weeks ago. this one was taken at topone.

and lastly this. dearest chanced upon the paranomic function accidentally when he was trying to take pictures of a guy who looked almost identical like his uncle. i thought it looks quite nice. yes?

and yeah… that’s all for the blogging today. i’m famished - time to dig in to the yummy ice cream! and continue to waste the rest of the weekend away…

20th Century Boys
Right after the popularity of death note, the japanese release another similar movie. Instead of writing how you want the people to die. they write a book of prophecy. something like the book of revelations in the bible.

20th Century Boys is a science fiction thriller manga written by Naoki Urasawa, the author of the popular manga Monster. Urasawa borrowed themes from Stephen King’s It and the Stand almost to the point of pure plagiarism but at least he copied the style of a legendary author. Themes from the Old and New Testament of the Bible as well as Paradise Lost are also explored in this manga. 20th Century Boys is a classic by default because most 21st century manga lack any integrity, character development, and/or exploration of the creative possibilities of the human mind. And also the manga is evil.

Creation, sacrifice, betrayal, jealousy, and redemption are probably the main themes of 20th Century’s story. The main protagonist is a representation of both God and Jesus. He creates the world and then takes a long extended break. While he allows fire and brimstone to destroy most of the sinners, he slacks off deciding to run away and play his horrible guitar songs. Finally the savior returns, gathers his remaining apostles, and saves the day. Even though he sacrifices his life, he resurrects himself just like Jesus after he died on the cross. No matter if you like the Bible or not, this tale never gets old. I ate it up…yes I loved it…..which scares the hell outta me.  

The manga has some glaring problems though. Urasawa is infamous for writing multiple plots that drag on forever or vanish into thin air. Did I really care about anything Kanna did throughout the story? No but I had to read through that crap for more than half the manga series. And what do I get for patiently following Kanna? Nothing. She doesn’t really do anything and takes the ultimate back seat to even two dimensional characters like Number 13 who get barely any character development. The worst part is that Kanna has the tools to be the best character in 20th Century besides “tomodachi” Unfortunately, Urasawa screwed up her plot allowing her to become just another damsel in distress…..how boring.

Tomodachi also degenerated into little more than a half baked Satan. Once you read the whole manga and discover the truth, you will probably curse yourself for not just reading 21st Century Boys only. Everything that “tomodachi” does is worthless. His actions do nothing to influence anybody at all. He is an outsider and probably the most pitiful character ever created. And you have absolutely no sympathy for him whatsoever unlike Satan from Milton’s Paradise Lost because you barely learn anything interesting about him. His motivations are juvenile at best. You know a villain or antagonist is lame when the main character can end his whole game plan by simply saying “play time is over”

I am afraid of 20th Century Boys and not because it is supposed to be a mystery/suspense manga. You won’t be surprised at any of the plot twists. The manga is terrifying because people blindly love it despite the fact that it is pretty mediocre. It is almost a cult response to say you like this manga. The symbology, religious overtones, and good/evil bullshit will easily brainwash weak minds. I am not sure if this manga is supposed to be satire or not. Is Urasawa trying to be some kind of cult leader? If he is then he succeeded. I saw the movie and I felt like it was trying to brainwash me like Clockwork Orange. Some of the scenes from the 20th Century Boy movie resemble the flashing movie clips played in order to brainwash Alex. Why did the director need to do that if nothing from the manga suggests a scene like that is necessary?

The truth is in the manga. The only reasonable character, Manjoume, is a con artist trickster. He is the only character in the entire story to realize that no one cares about the truth as long as they believe in something. He is terrified when even the dude helping him perform the obvious trick believes that what he is seeing is real despite the fact that he knows it is false! He tells this to the “good guys” and they don’t even care. Manjoume eventually catches a bullet to the head because he isn’t a believer. The message is crystal clear to me. Believe in this shit or catch a hot slug.

There aren’t many manga that terrify because the actual comic is evil. 20th Century Boys is a classic because it is too fucked up for weak minds to touch. Don’t read this manga unless you have a very strong will. Monster was pretty sick and disgusting but it doesn’t cross the line like this manga does. I won’t be reading this shit again and I definitely won’t be seeing anymore of the movies. What do you think of 20th Century Boys? How did this manga make you feel?

If you don’t know much about what’s going on in the Japanese cinema right now, or don’t know much about the Japanese pictorial novels known as manga, it will be easy to overlook the movie “20th Century Boys”.

If you want to know why you shouldn’t overlook it, “20th Century Boys” is shaping up to be the Japanese cinema’s equivalent of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy or even “Star Wars” in scale, although it operates on a much more human level than “Star Wars”.

Yukihiko Tsutsumi’s live-action movie adaptation of “20th Century Boys” is one of the Japanese movie industry’s biggest undertakings to date. It has a budget of six billion yen, and it will ultimately have a speaking cast of some 300 people, including many of the country’s most popular actors and comedians.

The original 24-volume manga is a hugely popular science fiction mystery series created by Naoki Urasawa. It has sold over 20 million copies, and won many awards, including a 2001 Kodansha Manga Award in the General category, an Excellence Prize at the 2002 Japan Media Arts Festival, and the 2003 Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category.

Although the story is told in a disjointed manner, chronologically it begins in 1969. This was an important year, the year before Expo ‘70, which highlighted both the state-of-the-art technology of the time, and Japan’s technological achievements.

The central character of this first movie in the trilogy is Kenji, who is - as it opens - studying at elementary school. He and his friends Otcho, Maruo, Yoshitsune, Mon-chan, Donkey, Yukiji and Fukube, have built a secret hideaway, which is their escape from the world, and particularly from two bullying twins. In their hiding place, they have all been contributing ideas to a manga drawn by Kenji, which they call the Book of Prophecy. In the crudely drawn book, the world is threatened by villains who are using an ebola-like virus to kill people, and who ultimately make a robot that will rampage through the city.

These childhood scenes are intercut with a story set in the 1990s. Kenji, now played by Toshiaki Karasawa, is - now in his thirties - running the family convenience store. Still single, he is also looking after his niece, Kanna, the illegitimate child of his older sister, who has since left home. He is also taking care of his elderly mother.

Mysteries start developing around him when the family of one of his university professors and the professor himself, an expert in robotics, disappears. Soon he hears that his friend Donkey has committed suicide. At a school reunion, many of his former school friends are talking about a mysterious religious cult, led by a figure known as “Friend”. Adding to the mystery, people in some places are coming down with a disease that makes them bleed profusely and die in a matter of minutes. Kenji also learns that the cult is planning to destroy the world on New Year’s Eve of 2000.

Kenji’s friends realize that the symbol that the cult uses is the one that they had come up with for their book of prophecy and their gang. Not only that, all these events appear to be based on that book. But who read it? And why is the sect basing its activities on what this bunch of schoolchildren created, unless one of them is really the anonymous “Friend” who dominates the cult?

In their childhood book, the gang realized that all nine of them would have to work together to save the world. In their humdrum adult lives, although most of them are not the stuff of heroes, they decide that they will probably have to do just that.

After turning up at one of the cult’s meetings, Kenji is under surveillance by Frined and the cult members. It soon becomes clear that they are also interested in his young niece Kanna, who  possesses some kind of supernatural powers. Several members of the group try to kidnap her, but succeed only in burning down the family store. They also manage to convince the authorities that Kenji is the true terrorist and threat to society. He becomes a fugitive, even as he gathers his old friends together.

One of those friends is Otcho, played by Etsushi Toyokawa  He’s become something of a martial artist, after having lived in Bangkok for some time and taken on work as a fighter. When Otcho returns to Japan, Kenji leads him to an abandoned subway station in which he and the others have been gathering for some time. The group begins, by referring to their old Book of Prophecy, to come up with a plan to stop the end of the world. In the manga, an unnamed building will explode as the final confrontation would take place. As they are trying to figure out which one it is, the Japanese National Diet Building explodes.

On the eve of the millennium, December 31st, 2000, a giant robot appears and begins rampaging across the city, spraying a liquid containing the lethal virus that has been causing deaths all around the world.  Kenji and the others decide, whatever the cost, to confront the machine.

One of the most interesting things about “20th Century Boys” as a movie is that it mixes so many genres, and so many characters, and welds them into a massive sprawling piece. There’s the childhood reminiscence genre, the mystery genre, the samurai genre, and finally that much-loved element of Japanese movies, the giant-city trashing monster.

If you stay until the end of the credits, you’ll see a preview for the next installment of the movie, which takes place in a dystopian future where the cult has taken over the country, running it somewhat in the style of Orwell’s “1984″, and in which Kenji’s niece Kanna has become a rebel.

It’s a complex story with many characters to follow, and director Yukihiko Tsutsumi, does a relatively good job of mixing the various timelines. You can follow the story, although you’ll probably get more from it if you know the original. Some things that appeared in the manga are barely hinted at here. The movie also doesn’t do a bad job of slipping from one genre style to the next, although it does get a little too talky at some points due to the amount of information that has to be communicated.

At other moments, the movie uses its enormous budget to film overseas. We see the effects of the virus in London, Paris, and New York, to name a few, and other scenes are shot in Bangkok. Fans of the manga have also been very impressed by the casting. Not only are many of Japan’s biggest stars involved, they look and act very close to the original characters in the comics. The computer graphics at the end, as the robot goes on its rampage, is as impressive as it needs to be. Much more atmospheric than the battles of the robots in “Transformers”.

You may find “20th Century Boys” a little disjointed, and a little hard to follow in places, but it does all come together. Die-hard fans of the comic will undoubtedly be disappointed by the fact that not everything can be crammed in, and by the fact that they’ll have to wait until next year for the next installment. For the rest of us, it gives a window to the breadth of creativity of Naoki Urasawa, and to what’s ultimately going to be one of the biggest Japanese movie projects ever.

Pequeños detalles, tecnicismos rebuscados, nimiedades y preconcepciones pueden ser nefastos para los usuarios novicios que buscan expandir sus horizontes e ingresar de cabeza en el misterioso y escalofriante mundo que la animación japonesa nos tiene deparados.

A continuación intentare darle una revisión extensiva a las abismales diferencias que separan las versiones en papel de las animadas, así como también adjuntar uno que otro tip que les pueda resultar de utilidad a los lectores habidos de información.

•Antes que nada me gustaría colgar unos cuantos términos y conceptos que quizás resulten de utilidad durante la estructuración del artículo (todo lo aquí mencionado es de mi autoría plena y debidamente extraído de la sección Freaky-pedia, que pueden encontrar en el extremo derecho de este sitio web):

-Anime (Animé): Animación Japonesa. Generalmente se da como consecuencia de un manga, que al alcanzar cierta popularidad se crea una conversión animada que puede o no ser fiel a la versión impresa, el cual corresponde al molde o eje argumental. También se puede dar en base a una novela visual, ova, película o simplemente ser una historia única y original, aunque estas ultimas son poco frecuentes.

-Manga: Historieta visual en papel. Se puede asociar al concepto de Comic occidental. Se caracteriza por presentar las viñetas de derecha a Izquierda, y por regla general se encuentran compilados en Japón en libros o revistas, serializadas semanalmente (Ej.-Shonen Jump). Sus tópicos mas frecuentes en un comienzo abarcaban primordialmente historias de robots y de jóvenes con súper poderes, pero con el tiempo se dio un paulatino alejamiento de los preceptos originales, introduciendo personajes mejor planteados, psicológicamente hablando, produciendo un notorio quiebre con los protagonistas de antaño que representaban con frecuencia a un valor o un anti-valor, para así denotar la pugna entre el bien y el mal, enfrentados entre si. Actualmente y debido al exponencial crecimiento del género, los tópicos abarcan técnicamente todo lo imaginable.

-Mangaka: Dicese de la persona que dibuja manga. Generalmente publican su trabajo conjunto con los de otros autores en libros o revistas de venta semanal, quincenal, o mensual en Japón (Ej.-Shonen Jump), en donde los mangakas, ya sean nuevos o veteranos, exponen y comercializan sus trabajos, pudiendo estos acceder no solo a una remuneración económica, sino que también a reconocimiento mundial, así como a la correspondiente animación de sus trabajos. No es mangaka la persona que idea el argumento base o la historia original de un manga sin ser su dibujante o creador, aunque la autoría de la obra se comparta.

-Fansub: Grupo de usuarios asociados entre si. Sus atribuciones son amplias y ambiguas. Pueden abarcar tanto el mundo de las series de televisión, como las películas, animaciones, comics, mangas, etc. Incurren por regla general en la labor de traducir, editar, encodear, entre otras funciones igualmente importantes. Es gracias a estos grupos que podemos disfrutar de una gran cantidad de series en su idioma original y en un lapso de tiempo muy inferior al estipulado, genéricamente hablando, para que una serie determinada se emita, si es que en algún momento lo hace, en la televisión, ya sea abierta o privada, aunque a la vez incurren con frecuencia en la violación de los derechos de autor, y sus accionar es generalmente ilícito e ilegal. Su trabajo es, por regla general, gratuito y de libre distribución, aspecto fácilmente apreciable en el lema que caracteriza a estas asociaciones de usuarios: “Por fans y para fans, no vender ni alquilar”.

•Es de conocimiento general que la gran mayoría de los animes que se transmiten actualmente poseen su correspondiente versión en papel, pero lo que no es muy difundido es que resulta muy frecuente encontrar mangas tan diferentes a su contrapartes animadas que pueden incluso ser apreciados como obras distintas. Revisemos algunos ejemplos concretos:

-Full Metal Alchemist es una de las series más populares que existen. No solo goza de una animación soberbia, sino que también la trama es tan sólida y atractiva, el diseño de personajes emblemático, la banda sonora un deleite constante, en fin, faltarían adjetivos calificativos para categorizarla.

Tras los 51 episodios que abarca el anime le sigue una película que le da punto final a la historia (existen unos cuantos ovas interesantes pero que no tienen influencia directa con los acontecimientos acaecidos durante la serie). Como generalmente ocurre en estas instancias, los fans renegaron del final (pese a que ha mi gusto es extraordinario, pero bueno, no soy nadie para contrariar a la gran masa de usuarios que piensan lo contrario), al igual como ha pasado con tantas series legendarias del calibre de Evangelion, Nadesico, Cowboy Bebop, etc. Pero lo que muchos desconocen es que la historia continua, eso si en su versión manga.

Mientras que llegados hasta cierto punto en el anime Edward y Alphonse viajan al norte, a Ishbal, en el manga ocurre exactamente lo contrario. Ambos protagonistas se dirigen hacia el sur en donde encuentran nuevos personajes, distintos enemigos, secuencias que suceden a la inversa a como se dieron en la serie de TV, entre miles de otras menciones en las que mejor no incurro para no dañar a los usuarios que estén interesados en lo que para muchos es uno de los mejores mangas que se puede encontrar en la actualidad.
Pese a que aun continua en publicación (aproximadamente un capitulo extenso por mes), el tan esperado clímax de la historia lentamente comienza a vislumbrarse por lo que no seria raro que en unos cuantos meses mas la serie concluya, aunque como resulta frecuente en el mundo de los mangas, nunca se sabe.

-xxxHolic y Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle son otro buen ejemplo.  Como ya he explicado con anterioridad, la vinculación existente entre ambas obras ni siquiera se menciona en el anime, por lo que los interesados en profundizar en los desvaríos existencialistas de Clamp, o simplemente ser espectador en primera fila del esperadísimo beso entre Sakura y Shaoran del que se hace alusión desde los tiempos de CCS, no tienen mas alternativa que leer los mangas.

•Aunque existan muchos mas ejemplos de esta índole, el grueso de las series se ciñe a las pautas originalmente establecidas por los mangas. La diferencia radica en que, mientras que los animes populares se estancan en fillers o simplemente temporadas de relleno para distanciarse de la versión en papel, el manga continua pulcro e impoluto en su serialización. De este estilo se pueden hacer innumerables menciones:

-Bleach, Naruto y One Piece, tres de los animes mas populares de todos los tiempos, por regla general van una o dos temporadas por detrás de los acontecimientos ocurridos en el manga. De la misma manera Eyeshield 21, D. Gray Man, Detective Conan (que de paso es una de las series más extensas concebidas por el ser humano), Gintama entre tantas otras siguen el mismo estilo en su realización. A excepción de la ultima, cuando estas series comienzan a coincidir en distancia con la versión impresa incurren en temporadas exclusivas del anime (fillers) que en su mayoría no son del agrado de lo fans, ávidos por episodios que se ciñan a los acontecimientos de la historia principal narrada en el manga.

Hasta ahora únicamente he hecho mención de series largas, pero en realidad la gran mayoría de los animes que no sobrepasan los 26 capítulos se estructuran según lo estipulado por esta segunda categoría de conversión, teniendo el manga casi siempre unas cuantas temporadas por delante. Aun así la diferencia más significativa será la que viene a continuación.

•La tercera y ultima forma de conversión de series se da generalmente en animes de limitada extensión (entre 12 y 26 aproximadamente). En este grupo se pueden considerar las animaciones que han concluido abruptamente pero que continúan en el manga.

-Sin duda el ejemplo más emblemático de este conjunto seria Elfen Lied, cuyo final en el anime no dejo indiferente a nadie, pero lo que muchos desconocen es que la historia continúa en el manga de forma magistral.

-Gantz, Rorouni Kenshin, Slam Dunk y Claymore son también ejemplos sobresalientes de series que se ven interrumpidas en su animación para concluir en el mismo sitio donde comenzaron. Aunque haré mención especial a Inuyasha (que hace solo unos cuantos meses atrás finalizo en el manga tras casi 12 años de serialización continua), Hajime No Ippo o simplemente Fighting Spirit (que no solo complementa al anime, sino que ya se acerca peligrosamente a los 900 capítulos, cada uno de estos plagados de increíbles combates e hilarantes secuencias que maravillarán a los que disfrutaron de la serie televisiva) y Hunter X Hunter (cuya bizarrísima pero aun así genial secuela únicamente puede ser apreciada en el manga).

•Concluidos los tipos de conversiones, me enfocare en unos cuantos análisis breves de mangas que aun no han sido animados, y la mayoría posiblemente no lo sea jamás (links de descargas en los comentarios).

-Vagabond de Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk): A esta serie ya me he referido con anterioridad, pero nunca esta demás el reiterar lo magnifico que es quizás uno de los mejores mangas de samuráis de todos los tiempos. Las aventuras de Miyamoto Musashi y Sasaki Kojiro siguen cautivando cada día que pasa a más usuarios alrededor del mundo.

-Akumetsu de Yoshiaki Tabata: Es actualmente mi manga preferido. Inmersos en un mundo de corrupción política y económica sin precedentes, Japón se encuentra dominada por burócratas sin escrúpulos que únicamente buscan maximizar su propia felicidad. Pero para eliminar la maldad existente en el ceno de aquella retrograda sociedad llega el asesino serial mas increíble de todo Japón, el psicópata enmascarado, Akumetsu. Este es uno de esos mangas que posiblemente jamás gocen de una conversión animada debido a los insanos niveles de violencia que transmite, pero con la versión en papel basta y sobra. Defiendo la teoría de que es mejor separar manga de anime y no pensarlos como caras de una misma moneda. Se puede hacer un buen manga sin aspirar transmitirlo en la televisión abierta y viceversa.

-Team Medical Dragon de Akira Nagai: El sistema medico japonés se encuentra en decadencia. Intereses económicos y banales priman por sobre la correcta atención a los pacientes. Mientras que este manga busca poner en relieve lo corrupto y negligente de una de las instituciones mas emblemáticas que caracteriza a la nación, nos cuenta las vivencias de Ryutaro Asada, un medico-cirujano de habilidades sobrehumanas, pero cuya incapacidad de distanciarse de los problemas ajenos le ha acarreado miles de inconvenientes.

-Fairy Tail de Hiro Mashima (Rave Master): Uno de los mangas mas populares en la actualidad. Las aventuras de Natsu, Lucy, Gray y Erza gozan de un éxito arrollador, tanto así que muchos ya se atreven a tildarlo como el próximo One Piece (que de paso es el nuevo Dragon Ball, aunque esto ya es una afirmación muy subjetiva). Sorprendentes combates con dinámicas nunca antes vistas abundan en esta obra. Personajes carismáticos, secuencias comiquísimas, giros inesperados, en fin, todo y mas de lo que se le puede pedir a un buen shonen.
La versión anime ya se encuentra a la vuelta de la esquina, e incluso indirectamente el buen Hiro Mashima la ha confirmado. Es cosa de esperar lo inevitable.

-Zetman de Masakazu Katsura (Video Girl Ai, I`s, DNA²): El manga mas violento de Katsura. Según sus propias palabras, esta serie nació debido a su pasión por los comics occidentales, principalmente por la figura del justiciero enmascarado, Batman. Referencias a esta obra se pueden encontrar por doquier en Zetman (incluso el diseño de personajes es muy similar), pero con el tiempo este manga logro adquirir una identidad propia y justificar la lectura gracias a un diseño de personajes soberbios, una sólida línea argumental y porque no, a unas cuantas secuencias medias subidas de tono que a los fans les encantan.

-Bakuman de Tsugumi Ohba y Takeshi Obata : El dúo creador de la afamada Death Note vuelve a la carga. Esta vez nos traen la historia de un joven estudiante de secundaria que anhela con convertirse en el mejor mangaka de Japón, para así contraer matrimonio con una joven a quien le prometió casarse si lograba alcanzar reconocimiento por su trabajo. Nada mas que decir ya que al momento de redactar este articulo el manga únicamente lleva un capitulo, pero lo que si puedo asegurar es que va a ser todo un éxito, garantizado.

-Psyren de Toshiaki Iwashiro: Otra serie relativamente reciente. Poderes paranormales, misteriosos enemigos y una atmósfera que hace recordar mucho a Gantz es la premisa central de la obra. Un entretenido shonen de esos que les encantan a los jóvenes habidos de violencia y circunstancias enigmáticas. Los personajes están bastante bien caracterizados y los dibujos son geniales, nada mas que pedir.

-20th Century Boys de Naoki Urasawa (Monster): Una extraña secta liderada por un carismático líder de nombre “Amigo” paulatinamente comienza a ganar adeptos y se le atribuye una gran cantidad de crímenes. Nuestros protagonistas, al reconocer el emblema que caracteriza a aquel grupo como el que usaban durante su infancia para jugar, se embarcaran en una singular travesía en pos de interponerse a los malignos planes del misterioso Amigo.

Buscando MANGAS en la Web

•Encontrar buenos sitios para descargar mangas no es tan fácil como parece. Mientras que las paginas mas actualizadas generalmente te remitirán a sitios anexos para efectuar la adquisición del archivo, otras simplemente te saturaran de enlaces P2P (torrents y símiles) que no son del agrado de todos.
Lo ideal seria saber diferenciar entre sitios exclusivamente para obtener información y webs de descargas como tal.

-Baka-Update y MangaHelpers son dos de los sitios más actualizados en cuanto a mangas se refiere a nivel global. Los mismos fansubs se publicitan en estas webs para que bajen sus releases, aunque rara vez podrás encontrar una DD decente por aquí.

-MangaTraders, StopTazmoy MangaShare son mis sitios preferidos para descargar manga. Las dos primeras están plagadas de DD`s y es muy raro encontrar series fansufeadas que no hayan pasado por estas paginas.
MangaShare, pese a ser relativamente reciente, es un genial sitio para encontrar tanto descargas como información de vanguardia. Con el tiempo esta Web ira creciendo a pasos agigantados para así gozar de una mayor amplitud de títulos, que actualmente es su única falencia.

Espero que este claro que todos los sitios anteriormente mencionados trabajan con releases en ingles (excepto MangaShare que es una mezcolanza de países). Encontrar mangas en español es harina de otro costal, aunque haré lo posible para mencionar unas cuantas buenas páginas en donde puedan ser descargables.

-Sub-Manga es un sitio muy nuevo que ya esta haciendo furor en la comunidad hispana. Ostenta una gran cantidad de mangas en español en DD así como también posee una interfase sumamente cómoda e intuitiva que diferencia entre series, fansubs y fechas.

-A falta de más paginas especializadas, a los usuarios hispanoamericanos que aun tengan deseos de adquirir mangas en su idioma no les queda otra que adentrarse en foros informativos que abundan en la Internet.
Mcanime y El Rincón del Manga son posiblemente los dos mejores foros para encontrar buenas descargas e información valiosa. Para navegar entre sus paginas no hay trucos ni consejos prácticos, es cosa de acostumbrarse a estos sitios y con el tiempo uno aprende a que sección dirigirse para obtener lo que desea.
Mcanime es mi sitio Web preferido. La sección de noticias es extraordinaria y el orden en los foros facilita bastante la lectura.

Este sábado 30 de agosto se estrena en los cines japoneses la película de 20th Century Boys, basada en el manga de Naoki Urasawa.

~ De niños, Kenji y sus amigos jugaban a salvar el mundo de terribles amenazas. Pero nunca imaginaron que lo que era un inocente juego de críos se convertiría en cruda realidad en el futuro. La desaparición de la hermana de Kenji, misteriosos asesinatos, un virus mortal, y un personaje llamado “Amigo” en el punto de mira. ¿Quién es amigo? ¿Cuales son sus intenciones, y que relación tiene con su pasado? ¿Conseguirán Kenji y sus amigos salvar el mundo? ~

Personalmente le tengo unas ganas tremendas a esta película. El manga está entre mis favoritos y lo mejor que he leído, y aún me entraron más ganas después de haber visto el reparto con actores casi clavados a los personajes del manga y este pv de la película:
