As many now know the 60gb PS3 is the most coveted of all the Playstation 3 models due to its inclusion of full backward compatibility and all the bells and whistles (memory card readers, SACD support, 4 usb’s, etc). Sony realized that they could reduce costs by removing the PS2 hardware (EE+GS chipset) from the launch models of the PS3 (20gb and 60gb) to establish a reasonable price point for the average gamer / consumer.

This led to the removal of the PS2 hardware with in the PS3 for a cheaper option of software based PS2 emulation, similar to the competing Xbox 360 (Pro and Elite models).

Then at E3 2008 SCEA told the press that backward compatibility would be completely removed from the up and coming 80 gb unit (formally the 40gb) and at Leipzig 08′ the premium 160gb model would also not include any backward compatibility at all (not to mention only 2 usb ports from here on out, no longer 4). Why was this done, especially from the “premium” 160gb PS3, well cost is clearly the primary reason, plus Sony has done many surveys which seemed to tell them that most didn’t care about PS2 backward compatibility (since many people sill own a PS2). Was this a mistake, not to long after rumors surfaced that Sony was prepping a downloadable update to allow PS2 backward compatibility if wanted (I assume for a reasonable fee $20 or $30) . Unfortunately our site shot down those rumors of PS2 emulation. Isn’t it in Sony’s best interest to release this “PS2 emulator”, hell they already have the software made and no major changes would have to occur in the programming (I’d assume) so it would be a lucrative incentive for Sony to release this on the PS Store (it’s essentially all profit).

I personally work in retail and I can easily say that at least 85% of my customers looking to buy a PS3 for game use (many buy it primarily for Blu-ray, especially causal adult gamers) ask if it has backward compatiblity and quite a few mistake it for the older 80 gb (the ones from last fall up till the MGS 4 80gb PS3 pack). If this many customers are asking for it why not provide it for a small fee, many would pay for it, but not everyone. It’s in Sony’s best int interest to include backward compatibility since they could hypothetically sell more PS2 games (which is very profitable) while maintaining strong PS3 game sales. This would help the Playstation family as a whole, especially the current PS2 users looking to upgrade in the future. If there is a demand, it is the most idiotic business move to alienate former PS2 users from upgrading to the PS3, especially when the Wii and Xbox 360 both have backward compatibility. What do you think…

So this definitely isn’t the Gamer Lounge’s longest or, for that matter, best episode and I don’t want to sully our reputation. So what do I do? Put out “A Message from Luke!” As you can probably tell from the title, I’m alone in this episode as well. However, that does not mean it’s a waste of your time! I cover Assassin’s Creed, Castle Crashers, Fighting Games, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Knights of the Old Republic, and Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War!

So I’ve got to admit, this looks cool. But one question, what the crap is the difference between this and Guitar Hero World Tour? (Yes I realize it has song creation. But with no vocals who cares?) Maybe if they worked together on one game rather than making two clones this would be even cooler than it already is. While the price tag is looking to be something like $180, with wireless drums it actually looks worth it this time around. So…uhh…for the one guy in the world that hasn’t played Rock Band, is there a solo campaign for the drums?

A Cheaper 360!

Yep, this is true. Saw it in the Best Buy ad today. You can now get the 20gb 360 for only $300. But seriously, has anyone not boughten one yet?

The evidence pointing to a price cut for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 video game console was impossible to ignore and today Microsoft went ahead and made it official.

The current Xbox 360 Pro which comes with a 20GB hard drive will now sell for $299, down from $349. Additionally, a new Pro model was announced that will feature a 60GB hard drive and will take the $349 price point.

The new 60GB version will go on sale next month. For more info check out the press release here.

The drop to $299 makes the Xbox 360 cheaper than the Sony PlayStation 3 and just $50 more than the Nintendo Wii. No price drop is expected for either the PS3 or Wii.

—

Rejoice those without 360’s as the day has come that you can be that much closer to owning the white, sexy beast. Microsoft announced this morning, most likely ahead of their Monday E3 press conference, that they will be dropping the price of all remaining 20GB 360 Pro’s to $299 to make room for the new 60GB model which will replace the Pro’s previous $349 price point.

So if you want to take advantage of the new deal, you’d better hurry as it won’t be too long that 20GB Pro’s will be come as elusive as Wii’s.

The 60GB 360 is set to launch sometime August. Expect more information at E3 and stay tuned to CBx for all your E3 coverage.

Microsoft will soon cut the price of its best-selling Xbox 360 model, according to a published repo

Microsoft will soon cut the price of its best-selling Xbox 360 model, according to a published report. The company will reduce the retail price for the 20-GB Xbox 360 Pro by $50, to $299 “in the coming weeks,” according the Hollywood Reporter. The magazine’s report cited anonymous sources in the retail industry. Microsoft officials did not immediately return a call from InformationWeek seeking comment. Microsoft is looking to maintain recent Xbox sales’ momentum in the face of stiff competition from Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii unit. The 40-GB PlayStation 3 sells for $399, while the Nintendo Wii sells for $250.

In its most recent quarter, Microsoft reported that Xbox 360 total console sales surpassed 19 million during the period, up 74% from the previous year. Recent releases of hot-selling game titles, including Halo 3″and Grand Theft Auto IV, have helped spur Xbox 360 sales. Halo 3, an Xbox 360 exclusive, smashed numerous gaming industry sales records when it debuted late last year — including most launch-day sales. Among the upcoming titles that Microsoft is counting to further grow Xbox 360 sales is Rock Band 2, which is slated for release in September. The game lets players perform popular songs by using an array of virtual instruments.

A “rock solid” source says Microsoft will upgrade the storage capacity of the Xbox 360 P

A “rock solid” source says Microsoft will upgrade the storage capacity of the Xbox 360 Premium by the end of June, a new report said on Friday. - Gamepro.com

According to Trusted Reviews, Microsoft wants the new 60GB Premium model locked and loaded no later than July 1.

“If you’ve been saving up for a 20GB Xbox 360, hold off,” writes reporter Gordon Kelly. “The 60GB model IS coming and you can take this exclusive to the bank.”

What’s more, the report corroborates the idea that Microsoft will soon launch an Xbox 360 model with Blu-ray drive now that HD DVD has swum with the fishes, not to mention ongoing negotiation between Microsoft and Sony.

With regards to the source’s reliability, Trusted Reviews reminded its readers that it confirmed the impending sale of the 16GB iPhone in February before it was officially announced. - Gamepro.com

There is just too many SKU’s here. Why can’t they just make up their mind. This is a classic case of rushing a product to the market. Sony didn’t rush anything to themarke, but I believe they may be guilty of this as well. At least they discontinued some SKU’s.

TrustedReviews is now reporting that the 20GB hard drive in the standard Xbox 360 model is about to

TrustedReviews is now reporting that the 20GB hard drive in the standard Xbox 360 model is about to get the boot in favor of a more spacious 60GB one. That apparently comes from a “rock solid source,” who says that they (Microsoft)want it out the door by the end of its financial year, which comes at the end of June.

Also they go into a bit of speculation, saying that Microsoft is going to make” a model with a built-in Blu-ray drive would seem to be “the most logical conclusion,” although they say an external drive “makes sense too.” While that possibility obviously remains up in the air, TrustedReviews is about as confident as can be with the 60GB Xbox 360 news, saying that you can take it to the bank.

Look out people here comes the XBOX 720!

Continuing in my quest to improve my epc I have decided that more storage is needed.
I have therefor

Continuing in my quest to improve my epc I have decided that more storage is needed.

I have therefore purchased 2 Toshiba 20GB Ipod drives and 2 external housings from eBay.

The first drive and housing have been assembled as usual and I now have a nifty external drive for all my <strike>crap</strike> useful apps.

The second drive has had a more useful fate as an internal, external drive.

The Mod began with yet another epc strip down, followed by the removal of the previous usb hub, soon to be improved and relocated into the screen surround.

epc stripdown

Then I removed the dividing strip between the ram and imaginary 2nd PCI-E slot

Strip removed

I then cleaned up the raised parts that would be in the way of the drive, including removing one screw post.

Post removed

It was now time to prepare the drive, I removed the small board from the external housing and added it to the drive, I also cut down a wired mini USB plug to attach the housing to the board. This was taped to secure everything and to prevent shorting onto the board underneath.

Prepared drive

I mounted the drive where the 2nd PCI-E would be which does cover the RAM once assembled

Drive in place

Once the drive was spliced into the wires for my previous internal bluetooth mod it was just a case of re-assembly and try it out, as you can see, SUCCESS!!!

Additional Harddrive

I will reinstall XP on the internal SSD and run everything else from the HDD, and once i have added the in-screen mods it will be perfect.

XBOX360 10.450.000 copias vendidas
Wii 6.650.000 copias vendidas
Playstation3 2.860.000 copias vendidas
