Pertanyaan banyak orang yang baru join id-gps@yahoogroups.com yang boaet Bos Syd [Ptk] adalah:

a. Apa sih yang bisa saya lakukan dengan GPS saya?

b. Bagaimana caranya menggunakan GPS untuk menuntun kita sampai ke suatu tempat?

c. Berapa banyak peta yang dapat dimasukkan ke dalam unit GPS saya?

d. Menu / fitur apa lagi yang terdapat di GPS saya?

Tentunya semua itu tidak akan terjawab dalam postingan singkat ini, yang ingin saya bagikan disini adalah bagaimana cara penggunaan GPS secara umum diseri NUVI pada khususnya.  Screen capture dilakukan menggunakan NUVI 205 dengan firmware v4.40 dan peta SEA v3.00 dari TeleAtlas & v58 dari navigasi.net.  Secara garis besar semua yang dipaparkan disini bersifat universal di semua NUVI.  Yang membedakan jenis NUVI adalah fitur uniknya.  Misalnya FM RADIO, FM Transmitter & BLUETOOTH HANDSFREE di NUVI seri 710, tahan air di NUVI 500, geotagging, 3D POI muncul saat navigasi, pict showing as slide show di NUVI 205, dan seterusnya.

OK, berikut ringkasan kita, ……:

Loh?   Screen boot kok beda ya?  Di NUVI 205, karena bisa berfungsi sebagai digital frame [alias: untuk picture slide show], maka anda bisa memilih photo yang akan digunakan sebagai ganti logo Garmin pada saat booting.

Berikutnya Apa yang dapat kita lakukan dari Menu Utama?

1. Apabila anda tekan dan tahan +/- 10 detik - 30 detik pada icon sinyal, maka halaman baru akan terbuka.  Disana anda dapat menemukan info berapa banyak Satelite yang sedang terkoneksi ke NUVI, posisi Anda pada saat itu, dan akurasi GPS NUVI saat itu.  Untuk kembali ke menu utama silahkan tekan BACK.

2. Tekan dan tahan di icon battery +/- 30 detik, maka menu rahasia [baca: DIAGNOSTICS] akan terbuka.  Disini dapat anda temukan semua informasi mengenai device anda.  Mulai dari firmware, kartu memory yang digunakan, speed read/writenya, dan sarana pengecheckan sekiranya layar device ada ada pixel mati [dead pixel].

3. Tekan tampilan WHERE TO?  akan membawa anda ke halaman berikutnya, dimana anda dapat mencari alamat atau Point of Interest [POI].  Anda akan masuk ke menu ini untuk menyuruh GPS menunjukkan jalan ke tujuan Anda (tentunya harus menggunakan peta yang mensupport hal tersebut misal CN atau Navigasi.net).  Contoh WHERE TO? hal 2:

Sekiranya sudah ada POI yang anda masukkan lewat device anda [menu Coordinate / save], maka dapat anda temukan kembali di dalam menu FAVOURITES.

Kita dapat mengattach photo ke POI yang telah dibuat.  Mirip-mirip fungsi Geotagging, hanya saja data lokasi tidak disimpan langsung difile photo.

Setelah memilih POI yang anda inginkan, informasi berikutnya akan ditampilkan, misal info jarak, estimasi waktu tempu, dan apabila anda memilih MAP, layar berikut ini yang akan ditunjukkan.

Dari sini, apabila anda mentap kursor pada “titik jalan” / lokasi lainnya dan menclick Go! maka anda akan dituntun menuju lokasi dimaksud.  Jadi tuntunan tidak hanya berlaku untuk pergi ke POI tertentu, tapi dapat juga dilakukan menuju suatu titik.

Kembali ke tujuan semula kita, setelah anda tentukan tujuan anda dan mengclick Go!  Kemudian apabila anda show map maka akan muncul layar seperti berikut:

Setelah rute tergambar di NUVI anda, device siapTinggal kita ikuti agar bisa sampai ketujuan..  bentuknya adalah seperti ini:

Perhatikan dibagian atas, dari kiri sampai kanan berwarna dasar hijau dan ada tulisan “Continue to Bintaro Utama”  what’s next?  Belum ada tanda belokan berikutnya sampai kita mulai berjalan mengikuti jalur UNGU dan menemukan belokan terdekat.

Hem.. menarik?  Berikut yang ditengah ini adalah layar utama pada waktu kita bernavigasi ria.

1. Sewaktu diclick pada bagian kiri atas [setelah muncul bulatan panjang], maka akan muncul next turn beserta peta lokasinya.  Apabila anda pencet tanpa panah kebawah, maka seluruh belokan sampai ke tujuan beserta petanya akan muncul 1 per 1.

2. Untuk melihat ringkasan dari belokan-belokan yang akan dilalui, silahkan pencet pada posisi ini.  Untuk menampilkan posisi belokan di peta, silahkan pilih SHOW MAP.

3. Apabila kita pencet posisi kiri bawah [ditempat kecepatan / speed], maka akan muncul odometer dari NUVI tersebut.  Value dapat direset dari tempat ini.

4. Dengan memilih MENU, maka kita akan kembali ke main menu, dimana anda dapat memilih tujuan baru atau untuk keperluan lainnya [misalnya setting, memperbesar/kecilkan suara, dsb].  Untuk kembali, silahkan pilih VIEW MAP.

5. Jalan yang harus kita lalui biasanya berwarna ungu.  Belum ketemu caranya apakah bisa diganti atau tidak. :)  Jadi pada saat anda salah mengambil jalan, biasanya GPS akan segera mengkalkulasi ulang rute anda dan garis UNGU baru akan muncul, membimbing anda sampai tujuan.

Hem.. apabila ingin jalan lainnya [misal: ada kemacetan / huru-hara / banjir] bagaimana?  Silahkan pencet menu DETOUR, otomatis GPS akan merekomendasikan rute alternatif, sekiranya ada.

Dan sekiranya anda telah mengetahui jalur anda, maka silahkan memilih STOP, agar tidak usah dibimbing lebih lanjut oleh si Nuvi.

PS:
Menurut petunjuk HELP di NUVI 205, kalau kita tekan ‘tombol ARRIVAL TIME’ akan membuka suatu windows… anehnya di NUVI saya tidak begitu.. apakah di NUVI kawan-kawan terbuka sesuai petunjuk?   Kirimin screen capturenya agar bisa dimasukkan sekalian ya.

Baik menu navigasi sudah dikuasai, sekarang back to basic, bagaimana caranya kita memasukkan POI [misal: info kuliner / wisata dari situs Navigasi.net]?  Gampang aja, tinggal masuk ke WHERE TO? hal 3 dan pilih Coordinate

Dengan memilih coordinate, maka anda akan dapat memasukkan data dari website navigasi.net atau yang diberitahukan oleh kawan.  NOTE: jangan sampai salah format.. bisa-bisa nyasar ke tengah sawah loh!

Setelah selesai memasukkan koordinate yang diinginkan, tekan NEXT, kemudian masukkan Nama yang gampang diingat, setelah itu jenis icon untuk melambangkan titik tersebut dan pilih photo sekiranya tersedia.

Oh iya, keingetan 1 lagi…  semua gambar ini di capture memakai fungsi screen capture bawaan si NUVI 205.  Caranya masuk ke TOOLS -> SETTINGS -> DISPLAY -> Screen Shot -> Enable/Disable.  Kalau dienable akan muncul icon CAMERA PHOTO, dimana setiap diklick akan terdengar suara ‘klick’.  Image disimpan dalam unit NUVI di folder GARMIN\Scr  [sayang tidak bisa menjadi pocket camera ya...]

Terus menurut spesifikasi teknis POI dibatasi hanya sebanyak 999 loh.  Wah itu kan banyak.. masa masih kurang?  Hem..  menurut pengalaman sih kurang, karena untuk meload data wilayah Bandung saja yang hanya terdiri dari FO / Kuliner / Hotel / SPBU / sudah lebih dari 999 points loh!!!

Jadi bagaimana mengatasinya?  Untuk itu, silahkan download program POI LOADER dari website Garmin ini.  Dengan begitu, batasan 999 bisa terlampaui..  Sedikt catatan kaki, untuk mensearch POI yang tersimpan dalam di GPS terbagi menjadi beberapa bagian dari halaman WHERE TO? berikut ini:

HAL: 1                            HAL: 2                         HAL: 3

1. POI yang build-in [tergambar langsung di peta] dicari melalui WHERE TO? -> POINT OF INTEREST

2. Yang kita masukkan sendiri lewat Browse Map / Coordinate; dapat didapatkan melalui WHERE TO? -> FAVOURITES.

3. Yang kita simpan ke folder garmin\poi di GPS lewat POI LOADER, dapat dicari melalui WHERE TO? -> EXTRAS -> CUSTOM POI.

4. Untuk pergi ketempat yang sudah pernah anda pilih sebelumnya, dapat menggunakan WHERE TO? -> RECENTLY FOUND.

What a silly episode. One theme, as you may recall, is the children playing dodgeball on the international level. Simultaneously, Sheila Broflovski has decided to have a week honoring the school nurse, who has Conjoined Twin Myslexia, a disease that means a dead fetus, which was once her identical twin, exists somewhere in her body. Because this is South Park, that place is her head.

When Kyle is sent to the nurse’s office and sees her dead, protruding, jiggling twin, he is terrified and tells the other boys how gross it is. Sheila Broflovski overhears the boys and wants to teach them about acceptance; thus, she persuades Priciple Victoria and Mr. Mackey to join her for a dinner with the nurse.

Mr. Mackey asks whether or not they’re going to have to eat kosher food at the Broflovski household and later that evening he asks if someone can please pass the pork. Curious considering that the Broflovskis are decidedly Jewish and Mr. Broflovski even wears a kipa (a.k.a yarmulka, which is the small Jewish head-covering). Though plenty of Jews enjoy pork, despite pig being unkosher (against Jewish dietary laws), very few who are religious enough to wear kipas (pl. is actually kipot) will eat pig. Interesting.

I do like the theme of acceptance, but the episode teaches us that it’s important to learn that acceptance is great, but the essence of people being accepted is treating them like everyone else. Throwing week long events honoring them for their bravery at being different and standing out is not treating them normally and accepting them.

Gadget pertama yang ingin saya share dengan rekan-rekan sekalian adalah GPS GARMIN NUVI 205.

Akhirnya setelah 1 tahun belajar mengenai GPS dengan para suhu di ID-GPS@yahoogroups.com, (Thanks to: Suhu Buyung Akram, Suhu Suyandi Liyis, Suhu Gunaris, Bro Tedi H., dan rekan-rekan sekalian) kesampaian juga memiliki GPS sendiri.  Mumpung dalam kaitannya dengan waktu mudik & jalan-jalan, sapa tahu bisa me’rajoent’ rekan-rekan lainnya agar berGPS ria.

Pilihan hati jatuh ke Garmin NUVI 205 Black (tadinya ingin 205 merah metalic / pearl white - sayang kehabisan; *sezz masih ada yang punya sih tuh di Ptk; Nuvi 205W juga kehabisan).

NUVI 205 saya datang dengan: peta Southeast Asia v3.00 (Jawa-Bali, SG, MY, TH, HK, & Macau) dalam microSD tempat peta SEA v3.00, car holder, car charger (4.9-5.25VDC 1A), quick user guide, & User Warning.

Tampak: ISI KARDUS NUVI 205

Pertama kali dihidupkan, pilih region dulu (Indonesia ditulis sebagai: REPUBLIC INDONESIA), butuh beberapa menit (5 - 10 menit) sebelum locking satellite, walaupun dah diarahkan ke clear sky (langit).

Initial firmware cek: 2.90 (tahan icon battery beberapa saat - 30 detik, terus sim-salabim muncul deh menu rahasia).  Perjalanan perdana menuju TKP, tidak istimewa karena belum ada POI/WP.

Pada saat dihubungkan ke PC pertama kali, sempat bingung, karena kok cuma ada 1 folder Garmin.  Dicari-cari pakai Windows Explorer, ternyata muncul 2 drive baru. 1. mengacu pada internal memory si NUVI, dan 2. mengacu pada microSD di NUVI.

Setelah loading peta Indonesia (GRATIS & diupdate 1 bulan sekali dari http://www.navigasi.net/goptd.php; terbaru 17 Sep 2008 peta navigasi v58 edisi mudik, gmapsupp.img +/- 67MB) beserta WP/POI Bandung seperti kuliner, FO, & hotel sebagai ‘amunisi’ liburan dengan keluarga di internal memory NUVI 205.  Pada external memory microSD tetap peta Southeastern Asia v3.00.

Peta beres, POI beres, opps.. Jangan lupa register si NUVI lewat website http://my.garmin.com Apabila ini ada GPS Garmin pertama yang kita miliki, maka kita harus sign-up as new user di website Garmin tersebut.  [detail proses registration ke Garmin di-posting terpisah; baca @ http://www.bduab.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=128]

Pekerjaan berikutnya adalah mencari lokasi terbaik untuk menempatkan si NUVI 205 tanpa menggangu pandangan pengemudi, akhirnya diputuskan untuk ditempatkan pada pojok side windows sisi pengemudi (kanan) di H. JAZZ.

Eng ing eng, testing perjalanan (routing) dengan GPS pun dimulai:….

-. Swicth power di slide ke kiri dan muncullah logo Garmin

-. Ada pesan loading peta FREE NAVIGASI.NET v58 & Southeast Asean v3.00

-. Sampai juga ke tampilan terkenal “WHERE TO?    MAP,  VOICE,  TOOLS”

-. Coba menu WHERE TO?  Cari POI: “B2B OFFICE“  Loh kok tidak ketemu?  Setelah dicari-cari, ternyata , keluarnya di “FAVOURITE”

-. Dipilihlah untuk percobaan dengan setting voice default pada BRITISH ENGLISH.

-. Selama perjalanan si NUVI 205 ‘ribut’ memberitahukan arah perjalanan [Terus, Belok kiri 500m, Belok kanan 25m, dsb]

-. Pas sampai di tempat tertentu, dengan sengaja mengambil “jalan lain”, eh ternyata begitu baru ’salah’ si NUVI segera mengkalkulasi rute baru dan memberitahukan route barunya.  Sangat cepat proses kalkulasinya.

-. Sampai juga akhirnya pada tempat tujuan dengan selamat.  Eits, Favourite/POI ternyata tampil juga pada mode 3D loh!

PS:

Ada sedikit yang aneh pada koordinat yang ditampilkan pada setting standard NUVI.  Ternyata defaultnya : hddd mm.mmm’  padahal biasanya di navigasi.net  atau handheld devices address ditulis sebagai: hdddmm’ ss.s” atau hddd.ddddd  gimana cara rubahnya ya?

Pilih WHERE TO? [Kemana?]  pilih Co-ordinates, lalu keluar pilihan (menu) FORMAT.  Setelah itu pilih hddd mm’ ss.s” beres!

Hal lain yang mungkin berguna:

a. PRE-BOOT menu.

Pada saat menghidupkan NUVI, tahan tombol powernya selama +/- 1 menit ke posisi ON, maka anda akan masuk ke mode pre-boot, dimana kita bisa melakukan kalibrasi ulang (titik dilayar) terhadap layar touchscreennya.

b. MENU RAHASIA

Pada layar utama, sentuh pada icon battery dan tahan +/- 30 detik, maka anda akan disuguhkan menu rahasia di NUVI [tips by: Suyandi Liyis a/k http://mantugaul.wordpress.com]

c. SECURITY FEATURE

Seperti layaknya HP, pada saat dihidupkan, maka akan meminta PIN (4 digit) baru dapat digunakan.  Selain 4digit PIN, ada cara lain apabila anda lupa PINnya, yaitu dengan cara mengaktifkan lokasi yang sering anda kunjungi, maka si NUVI akan otomatis ter-unlock diposisi itu.  Apabila anda juga lupa tempat apa yang anda gunakan sebagai password, maka cara satu-satunya adalah mengirimkan kembali unit NUVI anda ke GARMIN disertai dengan beberapa dokumen penting yang menunjukkan bahwa unit tersebut memang milik Anda.

c. NUVI anda HANG?  RESET aja (butuh: aplikasi MAPSOURCE)

Garmin NUVI 205 Pros:

1. mungil dan ringan [gampang dicopot dan dikantongi pada waktu berpergian, jadi tidak ditinggal dalam mobil untuk mengundang 'kerusakkan' baik oleh panas maupun tangan jahil]

2. layar cukup cerah [brightness 50%] untuk dilihat dibawah cahaya matahari

3. ada fasilitas voice guidance, sehingga tidak diharuskan memantau peta sambil mengemudi (arah perjalanan *route untuk belok dsb di’baca’kan)

4. Proses rekalkulasi yang sangat responsive dan cepat

5. tampilan sudah 3D yang keren dimana kontur wilayah juga ditampilkan mirip COLORADO 300 [POI juga ditampilkan pada mode peta 3D]

6. sudah TOUCHSCREEN, sehingga bisa mengeser-geser peta untuk mencari sesuatu dengan lebih mudah [paling tidak untuk saya]

7. fitur camera, dapat digunakan untuk mengscreen shot layar NUVI dalam mode apa-pun.  Memudahkan troubleshooting (seandainya perlu minta bantuan ke para SUHU di ID-GPS) atau untuk share tempat menarik dengan rekan-rekan sekalian.

8. Fitur tracklog yang otomatis aktif pada saat si NUVI dihidupkan.  [setelah dipelajari lebih lanjut; setiap kali kita off si Nuvi, maka track akan dianggap sebagai 1 track alias 1 track = 1 cycle On/Off]

9. Berhasil memasukkan photo [geotagging] dari website http://connect.garmin.com/photo bagi pengguna IE atau http://connect.garmin.com/photos bagi pengguna FireFox.  [Tips: hati-hati apabila mendelete lokasi di FAVOURITE, karena walaupun POI/WP sudah di save ke gdb lewat MAPSOURCE, tapi pict/photo nya tidak ikut disave ke PC.  Jadi pada saat reload POI/WP dari mapsource (setelah delete FAVOURITE), hanya ada info lokasi + coordinate sedangkan gambar photo geotag hilang)

10. Memory internal yang besar (1GB / 2GB)

11. Bisa slideshow file pictures.

Garmin NUVI 205 Cons:

1. battery indicator masih 2 bar, tahu-tahu "low bat" dan unit mati sendiri [normal ngak ya?  Setelah beberapa cycle pengisian & pemakaian sampai habis, rasanya sekarang sudah normal; tidak langsung drop dari 2 bar]

2. battery Li-Ion. tidak dapat diganti sendiri (prefer yang seperti battery Nokia)

3. tidak ada softcase holder untuk membawa-bawa si NUVI selama tidak digunakan [jadi gampang lecet / masuk air waktu keringatan]

4. tidak disertakan charger listrik [indoor] agar bisa di charge langsung tanpa bantuan PC, akhirnya dicharge menggunakan charger PDA / charger miniUSB lainnya dengan [output VDC & A] mirip-mirip.  [Sudah dicoba menggunakan charger PDA: DOPOD]

5. TRACK yang tersimpan secara otomatis, dipisah-pisahkan dan di save sendiri-sendiri berdasarkan cycle power on/off, akan tetapi tidak bisa dinamakan per-track seperti pada handheld devices (60CSX).  [fitur trackingnya=PROS, tapi tidak bisa menamakan setiap track menjadi CONS nya]

6. pada menu MANAGE MY DATA, tidak ada pilihan untuk EXPORT ke GPX, adanya SET HOME LOCATION, DELETE FAVOURITE, DELETE TRACKLOG.  [tips:  copy saja file current.gpx di unit GPS pada folder garmin/gpx]

7. Dalam rangka tracking jalan yang belum ada di peta, Si NUVI akan “memindahkan” posisi kita saat itu ke jalan terdekat, sehingga routing pun bisa ngaco.  [tip: akan tetapi hasil trackingnya tetap baik untuk digunakan].

8. paket penjualan tidak menyertakan buku panduan fitur-fitur si Nuvi secara lengkap.  eBook juga tidak tersedia [hanya ada panduan pribadi yang dibuat oleh Boss Suyandi-Ptk]

Hasil pertandingan ’sementara’ antara handheld (60CSX) dengan NUVI (205):

1. recalculating di NUVI jauh lebih responsive (apa processor lebih powerful?) dibandingkan 60CSX.

2. ukuran screen 60CSX [2.8"] sedangkan NUVI 205 [3.5"], sehingga lebih nyaman si NUVI.

3. si 205 sudah bisa menampilkan kontur wilayah dalam bentuk 3D, 60CSX masih 2D.

4. NUVI series sudah TOUCHSCREEN, sehingga bisa mengeser-geser peta untuk mencari sesuatu atau mengetikkan nama suatu POI/WP juga lebih mudah, dibandingkan pada handheld (60CSX).

5. tracking lebih enak di handheld, karena:

a. bisa disimpan terpisah-pisah sesuai kemauan kita, di NUVI semua jadi 1 track [per on/off cycle]

b. Kapasitas & tingkat penggunaan memory tidak terlihat di NUVI series [masih sisa berapa untuk tracking/POI/WP/picture?  Harus dilihat lewat bantuan PC]

c. karena NUVI dimaksudkan sebagai GPS otomotif (NOTE: setting GPS Otomotif = lock on road), pada saat off-route, maka otomatis di NUVI akan menempatkan posisi saat itu pada jalan terdekat dan kalkulasi route pasti ngaco.  [tip: jangan mengandalkan routing dari GPS apabila anda melewati jalan yang belum tergambar di peta, akan tetapi hasil tracking masih OK untuk digunakan kembali].

6. Tingkat akurasi si Nuvi agak ‘rendah’; mungkin karena digolongkan sebagai GPS OTOMOTIF beda 10m masih bisa ditolelir [menurut suhu Gunaris].  Pengalaman perbandingan akurasi terbaik antara handheld & Nuvi (posisi keduanya berdampingan dan ditest bersamaan; sehingga faktor cuaca dsb bisa diabaikan):

a. posisi Nuvi diletakkan di meja, flat, layar menghadap ke atas (plafon).. akurasi terbaik yang dicapai: 17m.
b. posisi Nuvi diletakkan di meja, posisi berdiri dengan layar menghadap ke kita, akurasi terbaik yang dicapai: 10m.
c. posisi handheld 60CSX diletakkan di meja, baik layar menghadap ke plafon / ke kita, akurasi terbaik yang dicapai: 4m.  [Apakah karena 60CSX memiliki antena external sedangkan si NUVI tidak?]

Kesimpulan:

NUVI 205 T.O.P.  B.G.T, untuk dipakai menemani rutinitas anda.. misalnya lagi terjebak macet / mencari POI baru…  Asal jalannya sudah ada di peta, kalau belum ada, maka hem.. akibatnya bisa EHEM…. EHEM….

Kelebihan handheld 60CSX juga tentu ada, 60csx menang di barometric altimeter, compass electronic, tahan air, batere AA {gampang dicari waktu kehabisan}, bisa bluecharts+tides (fitur buat mancing), lebih akurat, tahan banting, dan keunggulan 60CSX lainnya… selain sedikit ‘lemot’ [menurut saya] 

Belilah GPS sesuai keperluan/peruntukkannya, misal anda akan sering menggunakan di dalam kota (otomotif) dalam mencapai lokasi yang dituju sambil menghindari macet maka NUVI series jelas lebih cocok, sedangkan untuk suatu petualangan (keluar masuk hutan, memancing di laut, tracking di gunung, dst) handheld 60CSX akan lebih berguna untuk anda.

personal notes:

- b/w film - opens with a woman sitting on a chair in a living room reading a newspaper
- humming / mechanical noise overlay
- repetitive film - no movement at all other than fingers and head
- starts with only one frame then slowly builds up with the number of frames
- back and forth with forward and backward movement of the frames as the man enters the room
- mirroring imagery from left to right = cool effect on the eyes
- her head appears to swivel a complete 360 as the scene repeats and mirrors itself
- the man goes down and kisses the woman finally

A second one?! Hehe.. yup! But of course, I had to sell the previous unit in order to get this upgraded version of the 200. Mind you, this is the limited “piano-black” finish edition, and it’s RM750.. yes, it is cheaper!! Thanks to a seller nicknamed Rafizi, from LowYat.net forum, who sold me the unit eventhough it was reserved for someone but since he/she didn’t give any feedbacks/replies for such a long time, I got it instead. Yeay! Anyway, those who are interested can have a look at his LowYat.net selling thread. (He has the limited edition units!)

Garmin Nuvi 205 “Piano-Black” Limited Edition

What do you mean Upgraded?
The moment I switched it on, I realized the first of the many upgrades is the graphical display. The visual buttons are now nicer with the edges having curves while the colours are shaded like 3D. As for the top bar which is now used only for navigation, the turning arrows/distance are incorporated at the top left corner. Apart from visual upgrades, the 205 has a Trip Log function, which basically records where you’ve been driving/travelling according to the map. This trip log can be viewed via MapSource software as I mentioned in my previous post. Be aware, this is not a Track Log which many have been mistaken of. A track log records where you’ve been driving/travelling according to your actual gps location, this function is useful if you want to add untracked roads that are not displayed in the map. Anyway, the 205 only has the Trip Log function, not the Track Log. Another handy feature is the “Where Am I?” function, which displays nearby hospitals, police stations, gas stations, addresses and intersections. It marks the location of your car when the unit is taken from its holder so you always know where you are. This is indeed a vital feature whenever you’re in an unfamiliar location especially during emergency situations. Other than those upgrades I’ve mentioned, the 205 has some hotfix and firmware updates that speeds up the satellite lock-on as well as the navigation refresh rate (e.g. turning now looks smoother than 200).

If I were to choose between Nuvi200 and Nuvi205?
Get the Nuvi205. Slight difference in the price, but lots of upgrades. Comes in many colours too.. the standard silver, greyish black, pink, piano-black, red, and white. Besides, I believe Garmin no longer produce the 200 since 205 is in the market.

Recently, Simplify Media - a fairly large media-centric business based in Redwood City, California, yesterday announced that it’s iPhone client, released less than 4 days ago, had exceeded all expectation of it’s staffing, when it reached a staggering 205,909 downloads in approximately 30 hours.

From Simplify Media’s Blog

“We launched the first version of Simplify Media last summer. For the past year, we’ve experienced smooth growth, but all of that changed dramatically less than 4 days ago when our application debuted in the Apple App Store. Our (aggressive) target was to have 100,000 downloads in 30 days. Instead we reached that goal in about 30 hours. As of last night, we had 205,909 downloads.”

With celebration came reality, with the company also stating it had found a couple of major flaws within the application, due to server demand.

“The overwhelming response has caused us to experience some growing pains:

Infrastructure: We discovered two problems with our servers (one Friday and another last night) that forced us to scramble. That meant many of you couldn’t connect for a period of time.

Product: We learned that two of our features, album art on the iPhone and password reset, weren’t scalable, so we disabled these. If you have forgotten your password, email us from the address associated with your screen name.

Support systems: We found out that our email provider enforces a hard limit on the number of email we can send per day.

Now we face a dilemma. According to the “free for the first 100,000″ plan we announced, we should be charging for new downloads. However, we are not confident that we can deliver a user experience that meets our expectations (and yours) until we work out a few more kinks. As a result, we’ve decided to remain free for a while longer as we make improvements. In return, we ask for your continued patience as we work through the growing pains.

A final note: to stay ahead of the curve, we are schedule a maintenance window on 8/19 from 9:00 -9:30a Pacific, that’s tomorrow.”

A clearly ‘popular’ application, for a now well-known and widely-use device.

Anyone familiar with ‘The Dip’ by Seth Godin?

‘The Dip’ is a point where you know that you couldn’t go much further than that and in many ways, you realized that all you have to do is let it all go. You know that it’s useless for you to fight for it. You know that you will be no better in any ways and you should let go all your efforts.

Maybe I’m in The Dip rite now.

Well, I have this case study project. I should say that this project is such a long forgotten one. The case writer alone even already abandoned this case study and completely forgot about it.

Wow-ze.

And now my supervisor asked me to finish it. He told me that the case is going to be his case. And me.

Well, not me as being regarded as case writer/researcher/whatever it is, but then yeah, I’m still the Research Assistant (RA) for this case study.

And you know what? It sucks. Big time.

This case is such a long-lost-forgotten case! And the issue with long-lost-forgotten case is that it just… Sucks. Really. You already too tired to do the research again and trying to cope your mind with the outline while you got something else more important to do than that case that supposedly should be put in a safe and got buried.

So yeah, I think this is my dip already And I really have to put my ass together to finish this. Well, best of luck *sighs*
