The rapid foray into technological advancements has done little to settle the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of synergy between academia and industry. In its effort to wash away the boundary separating the two, i2I has evolved from a traditional Business Plan contest to a start ups factory. Four out of the nine finalist teams from the 2008 challenge saw their dreams become reality. In an emerging economy like India, opportunities and motivation are abound for wanna-be entrepreneurs and i2I helps realize those dreams by providing exposure to collective wisdom of a large pool of mentors, venture capitalists and successful entrepreneurs. i2I facilitates interaction among finalists (and short listed teams as well) and its investment partners to allow serious and dedicated teams to catapult themselves towards financial support.

The new format of i2I received great appreciation right from industrial stalwarts to the most elite of academicians, venture capitalist firms to angel investors who have referred to i2I as an engine fuelling the growth of entrepreneurship in the country. The reincarnated i2I can be best described to have brought a paradigm shift in the expectations of all its stakeholders. USAID has announced the launch of the 2008 USAID Development 2.0 Challenge. Brought to you by the Global Development Commons.

Mobile technology, including everything from inventive applications for smart phones to simple text messaging, is increasingly ubiquitous in the developing world. USAID challenges you to explore its potential through an innovation for maximum development impact in areas such as health, banking, education, agricultural trade, or other pressing development issues.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Government agency that delivers economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide on behalf of the American people, is sponsoring a challenge to find the best in mobile innovations for good. Through a NetSquared community vote, fifteen finalists will be chosen. A panel of judges, selected by USAID, will then select the winners. The first place winner will receive a grant of $10,000, the two runner-ups will receive grants of $5,000 each. All three winners will have the opportunity to present their ideas to senior USAID officials, experts, and the public in Washington D.C.

How It Works?
Individuals and organizations working with mobile technologies to create change are invited to share their projects with the community through the USAID Development 2.0 Challenge submission form.

Once the project submission process has closed,there will be a community vote to select the top fifteen projects. Those projects will then go in front of a panel of USAID-selected judges who will determine the three winners.

RBI Young Scholars Award Scheme

The Reserve Bank of  India (RBI) has launched the RBI Young Scholars Award Scheme to generate interest in and awareness about the Indian banking sector and RBI. Under the Scheme, the RBI will select a maximum of 150 young scholars through a countrywide competitive examination and awarded scholarship. Selection test will focus on the role and functions of RBI and banks in India and will be held in English as well as in all major regional languages. Selected candidates will be required to work on projects in select offices of RBI for 2 to 3 months and will be paid a consolidated stipend of Rs. 7500/- per month during the duration of the project.

Sun Microsystems has yet again announced the Student Review Contest. This time one has to use MySQL and GlassFish and develop a web application and then write a review on MySQL and GlassFish.

Download MySQL 5.1 Community Edition and GlassFish v2 UR2 application server. Check them out for yourself by developing a web application. After you have a chance to use both the products, write reviews to tell the world what you think. A panel of judges will review all submissions and select the winners.

The contest will have two groups: one for students who are not Sun Campus Ambassadors, and another comprising Sun Campus Ambassadors. For each group, there will be a grand prize of $500 in Visa debit card, and five second prizes of $250 each in Visa debit card.

How to participate:
1. Develop an web application using MySQL and GlassFIsh and then host it on java.net
2. Write a review on MySQL and GlassFish in your blog.

The objective of the contest is to foster entrepreneurship through identifying and recognizing ideas and talent that can create tomorrow’s businesses. Bridging Borders between the contestants and the market place is the collective goal of the organizers.

The Contest is open to business ideas that involve or leverage technology in any sphere of human activity - be it services, agriculture, manufacturing, construction or education, to name a few possibilities.

The contesting teams will include students and experienced professionals, and the entries will be evaluated by a team of Jurors that will include successful Entrepreneurs, VCs, Industry Captains and members of the Academia.

TATA NEN awards mainly aims to bring the leading Innovators to the forefront by felicitating them. Hottest startups are being the key initiator to solve the hard problems, facilitate the growth and development of nation. The chief groups which has made this award a reality is TATA Business group, National Entrepreneurship Network(NEN), Venture Capitalist firm such as Seedfund and Helion.

Criteria for startups to be eligible

• A registered business (not an idea or plan)
• Headquartered in India
• 5 years or younger (founded in 2003 or after)
• Independent business - not subdivision

How winners are chosen

• The final 5 winners are companies with the most votes chosen from the pool of 30 shortlisted companies.
• The 30 shortlisted companies are those with both maximum number of votes and highest expert rating.
• If there is a tie in the overall ranking for the shortlist, first the higher expert rating will be considered as tiebreaker and then the number of votes.
• If both the expert rating and number of votes are equal, the rank will be tied.

The winning team will receive Business support from the leading Business Schools of India. The winning team will also receive publicity from the media partners involved in these event.

The Startups should have the characteristic feature of Innovation, Scalability, solution to hard problems of life. The final winners will be a group of 5 among the 30 participants all over.
