Undergraduate students who have completed at least 2 years of study towards an engineering degree from engineering institutes in India

IIT Delhi has instituted a prestigious summer research fellowship programme for providing an opportunity to exceptionally good undergraduate students of different engineering institutes in India, other than IIT Delhi (and if possible, abroad) to execute an innovative research and development project under the guidance of an IIT Delhi faculty. Students selected are to complete the programme in a span of 8-12 weeks.

The fellowship will cover the following:
(a) cost of travel in the country, to and from IIT Delhi;
(b) stay at IIT Delhi during the visit(s), including boarding and lodging in the Institute hostels; and
(c) a fellowship of Rs. 500/- per week.

The fellow will have to pay the insurance charges. Students who have completed 2 years of undergraduate training by May 2008 can apply for the above programme .

Programme: Women Scientist for societal Programmes 2008 (Website)

Indian women living in India and who are currently not employed in permanent position and who possess one of the following qualifications- PhD degree in science, master’s degree in engineering or technology, architecture, medicine or pharmacy; who have break in career for at least three years or more after having master’s degree in science or bachelor’s degree in engineering or medicine, architecture or pharmacy. The applicant should be below the age of 50 years.

Women Scientists for societal programmes (WOS-B) is a fellowship programme which is the initiative of the Department of Science and Technology to maximally utilize the human resources of women scientists for development of the country.Support will include a scholarship grant of Rs.15,000 per month for Level I and Rs.10,000 per month for Level II for a period of two years. Grant for minor equipment, consumables and contingencies, Travel and overheads will also be considered if found necessary under the work plan. Candidates selected for for the award of the fellowship are not expected to register for higher degree during the period of fellowship. The scholarship will be given for 2 years. The period may be extended to the third year in exceptional cases.

The various Project proposals could be for:

• Research, development and adaptation of technology to improve the quality of life and provide additional opportunities for income generation in urban slums or rural areas;
• Adaptation and transfer of an innovative technology form laboratory to field

Event: NASA Space Settlement Contest (Website)

Students from 6-12th grades (11-18 years Old) from anywhere in the world. There can be individual or team participation where team size may vary from two to six or more.

NASA Space Settlement Contest is an annual contest co sponsored by NASA Ames and the National Space Society(NSS). In this contest the Students are required to develop space settlement designs and related material.

Space colonies are permanent communities in orbit, as opposed to living on the Moon or other planets. The work of Princeton physicist Dr. O’Neill and others have shown that such colonies are technically feasible, although expensive. Settlers of this high frontier are expected to live inside large air-tight rotating structures holding hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people along with the animals, plants, and single celled organisms vital to comfort and survival. There are many advantages to living in orbit: zero-g recreation, environmental independence, plentiful solar energy, and terrific views to name a few. There is plenty of room for everyone who wants to go; the materials from a single asteroid can build space colonies with living space equal to about 500 times the surface area of the Earth.

While designing a space colony, students will have a chance to study physics, mathematics, space science, environmental science, and many other disciplines.Contest submissions may include designs, essays, stories, models, and artwork. Students can design entire colonies or focus on one aspect of orbital living. A class or school may submit a joint project where small teams tackle different areas in a coordinated fashion.

Note: Grades 6-9 and 10-12 are judged separately, except for the grand prize.

The first month of the fellowship involves an -intense, physically and mentally rigorous, month-long orientation to India, the Indicorps philosophy, and practical living. In conjunction with grassroots fieldwork, Indicorps also requires fellows to attend periodic workshops that encourage participants to deepen their understanding of Indian development, to reflect, to share progress, to collectively solve problems, and to re-energize. Some fellows opt for a second year to broaden their understanding of development and take leadership in managing projects or Indicorps programs.

The fellowship has stringent documentation requirements and promotes self-accountability. The program is carefully crafted to consider long-term impact and to defy common critiques of both international volunteers and the organizations with which they work.

Indicorps provides a nominal stipend to enable fellows to live simply and work in India for the duration of their fellowship. Basic room, board, and fellowship-related travel are covered by Indicorps or the local project partner organization. Indicorps is a total immersion program and encourages fellows to be a part of their communities to the greatest extent possible - including attempting to live within the means of their location.

Stage 1:

Stage 2:
Projects selected in stage -1 will have to be demonstrated by the team at a location, which will be notified later by the organizers. Event: Innovation Development Enterprise Action Service(IDEAS) Competition (Website)

Google Summer of Code is the flagship program of Google, designed to introduce university students to open source development. Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects. Google will be working with a several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Students can discuss ideas with the groups registered as the mentoring organization with the Google Summer of Code.

While the majority of past student participants were enrolled in university Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs, GSoCers come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, from computational biology to mining engineering. Many of their past participants had never participated in an open-source project before GSoC; others used the GSoC stipend as an opportunity to concentrate fully on their existing open source coding activities over the summer. Google will provide a stipend of 5000 USD per accepted student developer, of which 4500 USD goes to the student and 500 USD goes to the mentoring organization.

Competition: All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships (’All-Asians’) (Website)

(Each Institution /University can register up to 3 teams (of 3 speakers each). Teams are also expected to bring along an equal number of adjudicators who can be drawn from students / faculty / alumni)

The ‘All-Asians’ was started in 1994 and has since grown into the world’s third largest parliamentary-style debating competition. The 14 th held in South Korea last year had 104 teams participating and this year’s edition is expected to exceed that number.Asians each year enjoys the participation of around 15 countries and almost 500 participants. Every year the most advanced youth minds of Asia gathers to share and exhibit their diverse knowledge and thoughts on various international and regional issues. Asians promotes debate as an art of constructive argumentation and fruitful communication.

The registration amount is US $ 160 per head and covers accommodation in a 5-Star hotel, food and socials arrangements throughout the duration of the tournament. Depending on the status of teams registered at the end of the first phase of registration, the organisers may consider allowing more teams from each institution.

The three day event held annually, displays innovative concepts and products in the field of product design, graphics and media. Adex includes Bus For Us, an event which focuses on the revival of the transport systems in the sub urban and urban parts.

Cognizance is an annual technical festival held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.The annual technical extravaganza of IIT Roorkee, Cognizance is galore of intellectually stimulating events held over 3 days which include Robotics, Innovation of the Year, Industrial Challenges, Design competitions, Gaming contests, Workshops, Guest Lectures. It subscribes to the basic idea of innovating for the future and serves as a perfect platform for participants to exploit their talents and skills to the best.

Cognizance has events spanning all the fields of engineering. Workshops on Maya Animation and Cryptography are also scheduled for the fest. Series of guest lectures and panel discussions on topics like Computer Security, ethical hacking, code breaking and so on will also be organised as part of the fest. “Ideaz” is the event which caters to the needs of the students interested in Research. The event involves paper presentations.

Corpostrat’08, the grand B-plan contest aims to capture the imaginations of the young and vibrant brains of the country and helps to convert their finest ideas into a real-time venture through guided channels. This event presents the ultimate challenge of converting an innovation into a workable business proposition. The contest will encourage the aspiring entrepreneurs to think unconventionally and come up with plans that will have a significant impact on the world. The event will unfold in three stages. The first two stages will be conducted online. In the third stage, the finalists will be invited to the sprawling campus of IIT Roorkee to present their Business Plans in front of panels of distinguished judges from Industry and Academia.

IIT Bombay Research Fellowship and Summer Internship Schemes aim to attract professionals and students of proven calibre towards research activities at IIT Bombay. The awardees are expected to work on research projects and could be considered for admission into post-graduate degree / Ph.D Programs subject to fulfilling normal IIT Bombay admission requirements (see FAQ for details of admission requirements).

IIT Bombay Research Fellowship Scheme

• The awardees will be selected based on their academic record and an interview, followed by a written test (if necessary). They will be expected to work on research projects for a minimum period of one year in different Departments/ Schools/ Centres/ Inter-disciplinary Programs based on their academic background and research interests.
• The Research Fellowship Scheme is open to B.Tech. / B.E. / M.Tech. / MBA / M.A. / M.Com. / M.Sc. / MBBS or equivalent degree, with or without experience. Students with research inclinations in Humanities, Bio-sectors, Management and with background other than the above can also apply.
• The awardees with B. Tech./B.E. or M.Sc. qualification will be awarded a stipend of Rs. 8,000 - 10,000/- p.m.. Degree holders with experience may be considered for a higher amount.
• Other benefits include funding for participation in national & international conferences, Library facilities, hostel accommodation and working with proven international collaborators (where applicable).

IIT Bombay Summer Internship Scheme

• The awardees (who have not completed their degrees) will have an opportunity to work on research projects under the mentorship of faculty members/scientists during their summer vacation. On the completion of their degrees, they could be considered for research Fellowship subject to performance during Summer Internship. The Summer Internship scheme is open to pre-final year B.Tech./ B.E./ M.A./ M.Com/ M.Sc./ M.E./ M.Tech./ MBA/ MBBS or equivalent degree students.
• The summer internship scheme is only for pre-final year students. Final year students appearing for their final exam shall apply for Research Fellowship.
• Rs. 3000/-p.m. for summer internship (For a maximum of two months).
• Other benefits include Library facilities and hostel accomodation.

The International Conference on Entrepreneurship 2008 (ICE 08) approach focuses on the entrepreneurship research from theoretical and practical perspective using English, Arabic and Malays as the medium of presentations. This will provide the best avenue for the researchers all over the world. The ICE 2008 will also provide a platform for participants to coordinate their knowledge and expertise in monitoring, analyzing, assessing the theme and issues in entrepreneurship.

To accomplish the explicit goals of the conference, the presentations and activities will be organized well around a broad theme - Towards Developing Entrepreneurship Society – which is designed to introduce participants to the urgent need to create the entrepreneurship environment in the society. The overall theme is designed both to focus enough to add depth to the content of the conference and flexible enough to stimulate each individual participant’s intellectual interests. The sub-themes will be drawn from the economics, management science and business literature discussing in the field of entrepreneurship.

ICE 2008 invites presentations covering the full range of conceptual or practical papers in nature examining technical, sociological, economic/business, technology and legal issues. Any case studies by practitioners are almost welcomed.
