The 2008-09 out of conference schedule contains strong foes to complement the always tough ACC games. Duke will face off against three pre-season Top 25 programs in Davidson, Georgetown, and Purdue, with the possibility of facing a fourth, UCLA, in the Coaches versus Cancer tournament. The Purdue game is a road game on December 2, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The early season road game at Purdue will be a litmus test for the Blue Devils. Purdue, ranked number six in the CBS Sportsline preseason poll, returns all but one player off of last season’s 27-9 squad. Small forward Robbie Hummel was First Team All Big Ten, guard E’Twaun Moore was Second Team All Big Ten, and guard Chris Kramer was voted Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. The Boilermakers are talented and experienced as they return 65.1 of the 69.6 points per game scored last season. On defense, Purdue forced their opponents to turn the ball over an average of 17.4 times per game. This will be a tough road game and should be a good indicator of Duke’s toughness.

Davidson travels to Cameron on January 7, 2009, and of course that means sensational Stephen Curry will be in the house. Curry was named the Mid-Majors Player-of-the-Year by CollegeHoops.net. The Southern Conference Champions lost point guard Jason Richards, and 6-8 forwards Thomas Sanders and Boris Meno whom combined for 27.1 points per game and were the teams second, third, and fourth leading scorers behind Curry’s 25.9 points per game. 6-10 230 pound center Frank Ben-Eze is the Wildcats lone new freshman. The loss of point guard Jason Richards who averaged a national best 8.1 assists per game will be tough to overcome and Duke should hold off Davidson to secure a home court victory.

Duke faces the Georgetown Hoyas, on January 17, 2009, in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Hoyas, who lost leading scorer Roy Hibbert to graduation and the NBA, have suffered two off season transfers in Vernon Macklin and Jeremiah Rivers. Starting guard Jonathan Wallace, 10.7 points and 2.6 assists per game, and Patrick Ewing, Jr., 6.1 points per game, have also graduated so the Hoyas have lots of holes to fill. Four new freshmen will need to contribute early for Georgetown. Highly sought after power forward Greg Monroe is one of the new Hoyas who are ranked number 15 in the CBS Sportsline preseason poll. Georgetown should push the Blue Devils but they will be too inexperienced to win on the road in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

According to how the brackets play out, Duke could face UCLA in the Coaches versus Cancer Tournament in Madison Square Gardens in November. The Bruins lost Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, and Luc Mbah a Moute to the NBA, but Darren Collison and Josh Shipp return and the Bruins bring in the nation’s number one rated recruiting class, which includes McDonald’s All-Americans Jrue Holiday and Malcolm Lee. A game against UCLA in MSG would be an early test for the Blue Devils equivalent to last season’s match-up against Marquette. A Duke – UCLA match-up should be an even and very tough game.

The Blue Devils will be deep and experienced this season with 12 scholarship players including seven upper classmen on the roster. As always, the ACC schedule will be tough and the out of conference games highlighted here will assist in preparing Duke for the tough competition they must defeat in March in order to continue playing into April.

2008 Chargers Schedule

As most of you know, I am a huge Dallas Cowboys
fan. In the world of football you either inbrace the
Dallas Cowboy’s wholeheartedly or you absolutely despise “America’s Team”. While living in Dallas I became a true fan. This was 1989, right around the time that the team was going through a tough transition. Troy Aikman was a rookie. The Dallas cowboys had only won one game that season. Jimmy Johnson was fairly new to the franchise but as I remember the fans loved him. The next season I got the opportunity to work at Texas Stadium as a vendor to raise money for a band trip in high school. I absolutely had a blast and is one of the fondest memories I have living in Dallas. Running up and down the stadium stairs selling ice cold sodas. So the Dallas Cowboys went on to win a couple a Super Bowls and eventually the dream team that made all this possible, retired. Anybody that knows anything about Jerry Jones knows that he has the mentality of out with the old and in with the new. That does not mean that he does not respect the traditions of the Cowboys, but he knows when the time for change is needed. Jerry Jones wants another Super Bowl win so bad he can taste it. Sure, every franchise owner wants a Super Bowl win but Jerry Jones goes about it in a whole different way. A couple years ago when he signed Owens, I thought Jerry Jones was nuts. I remember the days where Owens taunted the Cowboys on their home turf, in their home stadium and on the beloved “Dallas Cowboy Star”. Jerry Jones made me an Owens fan. And I also feel the same way about him signing “PAC Man” Jones. The Dallas Cowboys are in that transition stage again. Last year was Tony Romo’s first full season, Owens second season, they just signed “PAC Man” Jones, and they also signed Ray Lewis’s little brother right out of college. This might just be the combination that Jerry Jones needs to come away with a Super Bowl win.

The schedule is a joy for any football fan, but definitely not worth the several hours dedicated on ESPN to it today to evaluate every single match-up. That said, let’s have a look at what the Broncos are looking at this season:

WEEK 1 @ Oakland: I can get in trouble for suggesting that this is a pushover for the Broncos considering a lousy 7-9 record last season, but the Raiders have to adjust to JaMarcus Russell under center and a reconstructed defensive line. It should be fun to check this first win on Monday night.

Week 2 vs. San Diego: This team just does not match up with the Chargers well. Unless there’s some indication that the defense is a bit stouter on the lines, I don’t see us beating SD at any point.

Week 3 vs. New Orleans: Depends on what Saints team we see: the one with Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush alternating or the one struggling out of the gate and leaning too much on Drew Brees. The Saints have made some good defensive moves in the offseason, so it won’t be too easy to score on them.

Week 4 @ Kansas City: Should be a win, but every time you go to KC it’s a problem no matter how much the Chiefs can suck at any given point and time (and I do not expect them to be good this year unless Herman Edwards has had a complete coaching lobotomy.)

Week 5 vs. Tampa Bay: The first of two games against NFC South opponents. This division was actually worse than the AFC West in my eyes, although the Bucs did win that division.

Week 6 vs. Jacksonville: The Jaguars give the Broncos the same fits that the Chargers do, I’m guessing. The defensive line has to be better to have a shot at this team.

Week 7 @ New England: A Monday nighter in Gillette Stadium. Call me less than optimistic about the odds of pulling out a win in this one.

Week 8: BYE

Week 9 vs. Miami: Unless they come off really rusty on the bye week this should be a win.

Week 10 @ Cleveland: Not much defense on the Browns right now and they traded away Leigh Bodden, one of their good corners. I see a shootout coming unless there’s bad weather, and even worse for the Broncos, this one’s on a Thursday night, making for a short turn-around.

Week 11 @ Atlanta: The Falcons are re-building and I don’t expect them to be that good with either Chris REdman or a rookie QB under center.

Week 12 vs. Oakland: Unless Russell and the offense click by this point, let’s say season sweep.

Week 13 @ New York Jets: I’m more worried about this game if the Jets draft Darren McFadden. If not, then probably another win as the Jets have to find a reliable QB somewhere.

Week 14 vs. Kansas City: Bad Chiefs team in Mile High.

Week 15 @ Carolina: Does anyone actually think Jake Delhomme is effective any more? If he is , well maybe. But as it stands now? Win column, hopefully.

Week 16 vs. Buffalo: The Bills are going to want vengeance for the fire drill FG from last year’s opener, but who’s throwing to Lee Evans and handing off to Marshawn Lynch? Probably closer than I think, though.

Week 17 @ San Diego: God, we suck against the Chargers. Have I mentioned that before?

If I’m being optimistic, I’m thinking 10-6 record right now, but that’s kind of draft dependent and obviously very preliminary. I don’t think 10-6 in the AFC West gets you in the playoffs, though, unless San Diego really screws up.

Here it is. I don’t like it. But, here it is.

I don’t like it mostly because I hate it when there is no consistency in the schedule. This year will be “fun” with all the late games and prime-time appearances but I’d rather have a full slate of one o’clock games any year. Playing on Sunday, Monday, Sunday, Sunday, Thursday and such takes a toll. Give me routine and I’ll give you a more disciplined, better prepared team.

Can’t believe how much love the Browns are getting. Sheesh. Talk about setting a city up for disappointment. Regardless, the Browns will compete but with the brutal schedule that the AFC Northerners are sure to encounter it may very well come down to the head to head division match-ups. I say…bring it. Many Chicken Little’s may very well be running through the streets of Cleveland after the Browns open the season 0-2.

The 2008 NFL regular-season schedule was released earlier today. The Panthers are scheduled to play in one Monday Night Football game, against the Bucs on December 8. Overall, the schedule looks to be pretty evenly spread out, with no extremely tough or easy stretches. Our bye week will be Week 9. Full schedule below:

The best music festival year in and year out is the Austin City Limits festival in Austin, TX. I have this opinion because, well, I haven’t been to any of the other annual festivals other than ACL. It’s a rockin’ time…if you can handle being outside in the Texas heat for 10 hours over three days. The first time I went, I was okay with it because a) it wasn’t that hot and b) it was the first time I saw Ryan Adams. The second time I went? It was so freaking hot outside and it was just a beating. I need showers and air conditioning in order to function so I could be right out of the music festival business.

However, I still dig checking out the lineup and this year is worth me pulling a Michael Jordan and coming out of festival retirement. The Foo Fighters (blah) are headlining but some of the other main acts are quite intriguing. They are Beck, Allison Krauss & Robert Plant, The Raconteurs, David Byrne, Iron & Wine, G. Love & Special Sauce, Band Of Horses, The Swell Season, Gillian Welch, Drive-By Truckers, M. Ward…oh, forget it…click here and you can decide if you like the lineup or not.

Today’s game (April 11th) originally scheduled for 4pm at Newton South, has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled to Tuesday, April 29th at 4pm.

The Big East (finally) released the 2008 football schedule today. Today is a bad day to be a hotel reservation agent in Morgantown and parts nearby, I would imagine. Just my few thoughts at first glance of the schedule. First off, we will know the fate of our season more or less before we get a chance to avenge the Pitt and USF losses as those are the last two games of the season. It would be a long way to go to 10-0 but if that happened, you couldn’t ask for a more dramatic build-up to the end of the season. I was at first a little upset about the Auburn game at home on a mid-October Thursday. I am still a little upset with it, also it and Colorado being our two biggest non-conference games and both showing up on Thursday nights. I am pleasantly pleased to see no other weeknight games on our conference slate (Thanksgiving Friday vs. Pitt is kind of a special case so I’m not counting that.)  We get a run of four consecutive home games in September/October, so we go well over a month without hitting the road, which probably isn’t optimal. Then we face a tough November facing maybe the three best teams in the conference on the road in that month. We get another huge home game on the first December weekend. I for one love that idea even though it didn’t turn out so well last season. All in all I think we have a nice balanced schedule with plenty of off-weeks and really, nothing too out of the ordinary. And we don’t get short-weeked going into our Thursday night games which has always been a concern of mine.

Ever since the teams that the Steelers play in 2008 has come out, I’ve had a sick feeling about next season.

It certainly didn’t help matters the way the Steelers played the last month and a half of the 2007 season, therefore, I’m extremely nervous for the 2008 season. I’m not nervous because we don’t have a decent team, but because even if we have a better team we may have a worse “net” outcome at the end of the season. The schedule is very unkind as Peter King, of Si.com, has observed the terrifying sight that we all observed a month or so ago.

The 2008 edition of the Pittsburgh Steelers could very well be a much improved team over the 2007 version, yet have much less to show for it. I am convinced that the ONLY way to the playoffs in 2008 will be by winning the division. The Steelers must remember that at ALL times and not get soft with any amount of lead they may get during the season. A schedule which features 10 teams that were +.500 on ‘07, as well as 8 games against ‘07 playoff teams and of those teams the Steelers play all but two 2007 division winners. It’s going to be a long ride.

Here are the positives:
*The AFC North plays very similarly tough schedules (except we land as a bonus for winning the division: NE and SD)
*I believe we will still own the ugly step child Browns yet again. Derek Anderson’s magic ride has closed and with the tougher schedule the Browns will certainly revert to the Brownies that
