Well, the Oscar winners were announced yesterday. Once again the same annual ego fest and some really ugly dresses.

I’ll just list the important ones:

Best Motion Picture of the Year: No Country for Old Men. A drama. What a shocker right? Can anyone remember the last time a movie that WASN’T a drama packed with contemplation on the human condition won? I would have voted for Juno, a comedy about the human condition, because it was funny and didn’t bore me to tears.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: Daniel Day-Lewis for some or other movie I will never ever watch because I do not willingly bore myself to the point of wanting to gouge my eyes out for fun. I think there’s a conspiracy going on that whenever Johnny Depp is nominated for Best Actor, they scrounge through a pile of scripts looking for one that could ensure any actor chosen for the role will win. I can only take solace in the fact that Depp still rakes in more money even without the Oscar. After all these years though he damn well deserves it.

Best Actress - Marion Cotillard. She’s French. That’s as much as I know.

Then some other people won some supporting actor awards, the Coen brothers took the best directing award, I won’t begrudge them this because they have done some cool flicks in the past, Juno (Yay) won the best writing for a screenplay written directly for the screen and No Country for Old Men won the best writing for a screenplay based on material previously published award.

There were of course loads of other awards but we all know after this has been going on for 80 years, the above are the ones that count. If you would like to see the full list of winners and nominees, then please click HERE. You will be taken to IMDB where they have a lovely little list.

Once again it’s a year where you can quite clearly tell the academy members need to come out of their little caves and experience something besides dramas or Meryl Streep.
