If the Rams can get by the Lobos all that then stands in the way of a bowl for the Rams is a rival game against Wyoming next weekend.  New Mexico might be disappointed for not being able to make their third straight bowl, and could have a let down in their last game of the season.

These two teams are quite similar in their style of play in that both like to run the ball and control the clock, so speaking from a viewers perspective this game could be unappealing on television if both decide to run the ball the whole game which should be expected.

The Rams however, can throw the ball if needed and average more then 80 yards per game in the passing game.  The Rams might be more motivated to make their first bowl game in years, and might play more conservative if they get any type of lead.

The Rams must stop the run and force New Mexico to pass, because Brand Gruner who has not been impressive all season after replacing Donovan Porterie.  If Colorado State can slow down Rodney Ferguson and make New Mexico pass then the Rams should be able to win this game.

Game of the week in sparkling high definition is a good one with the under the radar Air Force Falcons.  Air Force who could be very close to being undefeated after a turnover plagued loss to Navy and then losing to Utah on a last minute drive.

Air Force- albeit a long shot- can still win the conference title.  A lot needs to happen for bu the easiest way is for Air Force to win their last two games which are tough in this weeks against BYU and next weeks against TCU, and then they  need Utah to lose both games, or to get a share Air Force needs the Utes to lose to either San Diego State (yeah right) or to BYU then Air Force can claim a share if they win out.

Back to the game, this could be a high scoring game because everyone knows that BYU will score points with Max Hall to Austin Collie in the passing game, and for Air Force their optioon might  be too much because BYU’s defense is not too fast on the edges.

Also, last week Air Force broke out the passing game with freshman quarterback Tim Jefferson who was six for eight and had 171 yards.  That yardage doubled the average for Air Force this year, so BYU will now need to expect the pass in this game.  If Air Force does pass look for big yardage, because the option can create a boring game for defensive backs and once they start creeping up to help defend and that is when the Falcons will strike.

BYU on defense will need to keep assignment football against the option, and keep the big gains to a minimum.  Air Force will get the total yards, but the big gains is what BYU needs to do to win this game.

Air Force on defense does not have the speed to keep up with Austin Collie of Denis PItta in the recieving game, but if BYU keeps running the same plays then Air Force will be able to jump on some of those passes.

I really want to pick Air Force they are at home, they can control the ball, and they have a good coach who makes adjustments in games.  Unless BYU discounts Air Force and looks ahead to Utah the Cougars will win a close one.

Utah can clinch at least a share of their first conference title since 2004, and a win is likely in this game agaisnt San Diego State this Saturday.  Also, a win puts the Utes that much closer to a BCS bid with the showdown against BYU next week.

The Utes should use this game as a tool to work on their offense to attempt to get it to live up to the hype that was expected this year.  Utah should have no problem slowing down and dominating the Aztecs this week.

San Diego State has not been good in a long time, but this year is different with San Diego State having 17 starters injured and having three true freshman start on the defensive line.  Their program is a mess, starting with information that San Diego State had to create an emergency temporary lease with Qualcomm to play games there, players are not at weight, and well for some reason can not get players to play at San Diego State even though there is very good high school football in their area and just 90 minutes up the road in Los Angeles.

This game should be a blowout and maybe San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley can get a touchdown or put up some yards with the Aztecs playing catchup.

Final Score: Utah 45 San Diego State 13

Michie Stadium 12PM ET TV:

Whenever service academies get together the game is never a sure thing on who the winner is going to be.  Army has been the worst performer of the three academies, even though they have improved this year.

Air Force is undefeated on the year and that looks to stay the same, because ever since the Navy debacle on special teams and giving up turnovers the Falcons have been 3-0 and has so far seemed to have fixed that scenario.

Army does not have the offense to keep up with the Falcons as they only score 17 points per game and in contrast the Falcons score 29 per game, so if Air Force goes up early Army does not have the personnel to play catchup to the Falcons.

Army runs a similar run first option like Air Force, but they are not quite as good as the Falcons.  Army averages 100 yards less then Air Force of total offense, but they do have play makers in Collin Mooney who is averaging over 100 yards per game this year and has six touchdowns on the year and is the player Air Force needs to slow down.

Final Score: Air Force 30 Army 17

War Memorial Stadium 12PM MT TV:

The battle for the basement takes place in wonderful Laramie, Wyoming.  Both teams are really this bad, both teams are ranked lower then 100 in points per game with Wyoming in dead last averaging 8.8 per game while San Diego State more then doubles the Pokes with 19.1 points per game.

Wyoming is at home which gives them an edge, but the weather should be nice as the projection is to be sunny in the upper 50’s to low 60’s which may not help out Wyoming too much.

The advantages that Wyoming has is that they have a fairly decent run defense which should be able to dominate a San Diego State rush offense that averages below 80 yards per game.  Also, Wyoming has one offensive play maker in running back in Devin Moore who has 802 yards on the year and an average of 5.1 per carry.  Look  for Moore to take off since Wyoming’s quarterback situation is not good with Karsteen Sween expected to start, but Joe Glenn should be smart enough to use Moore and also mix in Wynel Seldon in the running game.

San Diego State has an advantage of a good quarterback in Ryan Lindley, but Aztecs will need some type of running game so that they are not predictable.  A problem for the Aztecs in the passing game could be the experienced secondary that Wyoming has, yes they are not uber talented but the experience will help them be able to slow down the Aztec receivers.

Turnovers will be the key in this game, while that is obvious but a short field will help both of these inept offenses.

Final Score: Wyoming 20 San Diego State 13

Will the BYU team that showed up in weeks one through six show up on Saturday, or will it be the team that has lost the last two game?  BYU should win this game because they have the better offense in every position with the exception of a push at tight end and running back, but the Rams defense does not have the secondary to matchup with wide receiver Austin Collie and tight end Dennis Pitta.

The Cougar offense will be too much for a Colorado State defense that has problems against the run and is giving up more than 30 points a game. The powerful BYU offensive line will mash a soft Ram interior, creating room for Harvey Unga to find the open hole and time for Hall to find open recievers.

The  Rams do have a chance because BYU has not played as well on the road with the one loss to TCU, a close win over Washington, and then a lackluster win over Utah State.  The Rams have the type of offense to mimick what New Mexico and TCU did.   The Rams have Gattrell Johnson III at running back and to a lesser extent Kyle Bell to spell him and CSU coach Steve Fairchild will use a steady dose of the running game to keep the Cougar offense off of the field.

Also, quarterback Billy Farris has stepped up his game and with targets like tight end Kory Sperry and wide out Rashaun Greer who has been the most consistent receiver that the Rams have.  Colorado State maybe able to stay close to the  Rams, but college football comes down to quarterback play and BYU has the more superior player at the position.

Final Score: BYU 38 Colorado State 27

This could be a trap game for TCU with the the big matchup against Utah next Thursday.  TCU better pay attention to the Rebels, because offensively UNLV does have play making receivers which could make this game interesting.

The Horned Frogs have been devastating since the loss to Oklahoma allowing just seven points in each of the last four games. In fact, they haven’t allowed more than seven points in any of the seven games against non-BCS schools.

UNLV’s offense has the players such as running back Frank Summers, wide receivers Casey Flair, Ryan Wolfe, and Phillip Payne and then quarterback Omar Clayton has the ability to run and pass to make some plays.  Even with these offensive players UNLV does not have the winning results and they are still winless in conference play.

As mentioned earlier TCU has been dominating on offense which in the past has been their achilles heel, and this game may be decided by TCU’s offense and not their defense in this game.  The Horned Frogs will still most likely limit the Rebles output, but the Rebels run a lot of misdirection plays that can result in a big play eventually.

This game could be similar to the 13-7 win TCU had over Colorado State on the road and a few days before a Thursday night game before they played BYU.

Final Score TCU 24 UNLV 16

University Stadium 7:30PM MT TV:

The coaches and players may not bring this up publically, but the last game at New Mexico was a sour game for all who played.  Utah lead 24-3 just before the half and ended up losing the game 34-31, also an important note in this game is that Utah quarterback Brian Johnson has the chance to be the schools all time win leader at the position by getting the chance for win number 22 as the starter to pass former Utah quarterback great Alex Smith.

That accomplishment most likely will not mean too much for him at this time, but the Utes will be focusing on this game that could be a trap game with the TCU matchup looming next week.

New Mexico will want to run the ball up the middle against the Utes defensive line that has been depleted by  injury, but they have held their own during that time.  This week returns more depth to the defensive line that should help the Ute run stopping even more.

If the Lobos are able to have success with Rodney Ferguson who is one of the many very dominant running backs in the league.  The key for the Lobos will be their quarterback play with Brad Gruner who has yet to pass for more then 100 yards on the season so far.  Bruner still may not need to pass for a lot of yards, but he will need to make plays to keep the Utah defense off balanced.

The week before the bye the Utes had their best overal game of the year with their offense racking up 549 total yards, and if the Utes can play similar to that Rams game then Utah should have no problem beating the Lobos.

However in years past the Utes have  lost games they should not have even though they have had better talent, and this game could be this spot this year.

Final Score: Utah 37 New Mexico 24

First off most of this might be some old news, but since this is just for at least my amusement I am unable to post daily updates I find out.

The big news is who is going to replace Shaun Carney at quarterback. Right now it looks to be between senior Shea Smith and junior Eric Herbort are entering a cram course to see who will be the starter August 30th, and between the two they combined for 12 total plays of division one experience, but all 12 come from Smith. Callhoun acknowledges that to be able to compete in the league strong quarterback is a must and by looking at who most likely will finish ahead of the Falcons all have returning quarterbacks in BYU, New Mexico, TCU, and Utah. Through spring camp Herbort had the sligh edge, and Calhoun has not ruled out playing a two quarterback system, which we all know is very, very difficult to be successful with.

Another replacement they are looking for is the Z-back where the 2007 offensive player of the year Chad Hall graduated. Hall will not be able to be replaced by just one but at least two and maybe three players, in regards to the tailback position that Hall managed at times the frontrunner looks to be Sophomore Kyle Lumpkin.

The injury bug did hit the Falcons in the first week of practice with tight end Travis Dekker who be out for about eight weeks because of a slight fracture in his right ankle. Dekker was the leading receiver returning from last years team and the only skill position starter back from a year ago. The tight end position has taken the biggest hit with highly regarded sophomore Steve Shafferout until the middle of next week because of a concussion, and then senior Keith Madsen, Dekker’s backup, was limited in practice Friday because of minor muscle strains.

The Cougars all ready have suffered injuries starting with starting center Tom Sorensen injuried his shoulder and was in limbo if surgery would be necessary or not, but finally decided on Thursday not to have surgery and will have injections for the next two weeks and will be reevalutated after that. Sorensen’s replacement looks to be all-conference tackle Dallas Reynolds to the position and if that is the case look for Matt Reynolds take his older brothers position at tackle.

All-Conference wide out Austin Collie is going to be out for at least two weeks with a stress fracture in his right leg, and has been active in camp but nothing with running, jumping, or contact. It is still not sure when Collie will see action. With Collie out it gives BYU a chance to see more time from other receivers such as Senior Bryce Mahuika who looks to be the front runner buy Bronco Mendenhall mentioned that Luke Ashworth and Spencer Hafoka are also candidates for playing time.

One major concern was the backup quarterback position with Brendan Gaskins after spring practice. Coach Mendenhall had this to say about Gaskins “from the first day of camp on, has done a real nice job and Kurt is pushing him. Coming out of spring practice one of my biggest concerns was backup quarterback, and I am not concerned at this point. I like the way both guys have come back.”

Still BYU should be concerned if Max Hall were to go down, and we will see if he is able to keep bouncing back up after taking huge hits.

Good news coming out of Ram camp is that starting tight end Korry Sperry who is now fully healthy after tearing his ACL against Cal in game two. He has yet to participate in contact drills but looks to be ready and add to the weapons for the new quarterback.

Speaking of quarterback the battle is coming between senior Billy Farris, fourth-year junior Grant Stucker and redshirt freshman T.J. Borcky. However if Coach Steve Fairchild had to make an immediate choice, “If we played a game tomorrow, Billy would probably be our quarterback. But I want to make sure we make the right decision.”

The Rams’ quarterbacks, with hometown, CSU history and what QBs coach Darren Wilkinson has to say about them:

• Billy Farris: Sr., 6-3, 223, Baton Rouge, La. Walked on and immediately scholarshipped. Saw spot time for three seasons. 20-39-1, 239 passing yards; 18-79 rushing. “The best thing is his maturity.”

• Grant Stucker: Jr., 6-2, 205, Parker (Ponderosa High School). Only appearance is at WR in 2007 vs. UNLV. “He can do things with his athleticism that maybe Billy can’t.”

• T.J. Borcky: Fr., 6-4, 197, Orlando, Fla.. Drew raves as scout team QB in 2007. “He has a live arm and can move around the pocket.”

• Klay Kubiak: Fr., 6-0, 199, Englewood (Regis). Redshirted. “He’s a head coach’s son and knows football.”

All was not good for the Rams with cornerback DeAngelo Wilkinson suspended indefinetly for breaking a team rule, but it was not specified what that was. Wilkinson a third year sophomore was to receive quality playing time.

The Lobos have had been lucky to have no injuries thus far during fall camp. There are a few position battles starting with the kickers between James Aho and Drew Zamora rotating on a variety of live action field goals.

Not much other news besides that head coach Rocky Long has been overly impressive with the offensive unit.

So far, Chuck Long has been very impressed with the defense so far ealy in camp. The defense will need to lead the team since the offense lost some players to the NFL draft, so the defense will need to try to lead the team early on.

One amazing thing that San Diego State did for their first three days of camps was having camp start at Camp Pendelton. The reason to have camp there was to build up team morale and take notice from the Marines on campus.

One football concern is how will the Aztecs replace quarterback Kevin O’Connell and the early leader looks to be redshirt freshman Ryan Lindley, but junior college transfer Drew Westling who came from Southwestern College after a year at Tulsa feels he still has a shot at the starting gig. This battle should go down to the week of their opening game and the decisioin will be decided then.

Running back Aaron Brown who was dinged up last year and missed four games, reported to camp healthy which is what the Horned Frogs need to be able to compete for the conference title.

The offensive line only lost one player from the team, but competition is heating up for playing time across the whole line. junior Nic Richmond and sophomore Marcus Cannon have been rotating with the first team at right tackle and also sophomore Josh Vernon has been playing with the first team at left guard instead of senior Preston Phillips. This should mean that the offensive line should be very strong to help the running game and protect the quarterback.

Mike Sanford is probably in his last year as head coach, unless he can come across at least 5 wins, so the intensity will be there at camp. The big news about camp is the naming of a starting quarterback for the Rebels and it will be Omar Clayton and have full reigns at that position. Last year Clayton played sparringly but beat out Travis Dixon who started in nine games last and will now move to compete for a safety spot on the team. With a quarterback in place the offense should be able to be more cohesive during fall camp.

The only injury so far for the Rebels has been with defensive back Quinton Pointer who dislocated elbow, but the good thing is that surgery is not required and he will be out two to four weeks.

Coming into fall camp is to see who is healthy from injuries that hurt last years campaign. That all starts with quarterback Brian Johnson who so far has been hurt by injuries, but so far this camp has shown signs of being able to throw the deep ball. Then there is Matt Asiata who was to be the starter until he broke his leg on the fourth play, and the Utes were to have Darrell Mack redshirting, but now the Utes have the both healthy and their best one-two punch since Quinton Ganther and Marty Johnson back in 2004. So far in camp Asiata has been making the bigger plays, but coach Kyle Wittingham says both will split and will see time on the field at the same time. Then there is Brent Casteel who is a multi threat to catch the ball and run the ball as well. Last year he went down early in the season and was out for the year, and so far looks real good in camp so far.

One disappointing factor for Utes is that junior college wide receiver Aiona Key is a late arrival to camp, because he is waiting on grades to be published from his other school. Key is to be an instant impact at wide out, but with him missing camp he could have a tough time getting caught up and be lower on the depth chart until he graps everything. The best thing for the Utes is that they have no major injuries this year, yet.

The Cowboys had nearly everyone at camp except one veteran who was not available to practice on Monday was senior defensive tackle Anthony Wilson who is awaiting an academic eligibility ruling from the NCAA. It is hoped that ruling will come later this week, so he can get on the field.

There is not too much news to report from Laramie, just practices so far and no injuries as of yet.

We all know football season is close when media day arrives.  There usually is not much news just the same old coach speak about one game at a time bla, bla bla stuff.  Each coach was interviewed by a local radio station and I will post that once it is available on their site.  Also, to view all of the podium interviews by coaches, players and Commissioner Craig Thompson go to the offical MWC media day web site.

Also this season marks the 10th anniversary of the Mountain West Conference, when they broke away from the 16 team Western Athletic Conference that was a miserable failure, and then added TCU in 2005.

The news that comes out is the preseason all conference teams and the league order of finish.  Looks like there is a tier system with the league split into thirds.  I am not giving any clues about my order of finish, which I will start presenting starting in August.  To me Colorado State and Air Force should be switched, Air Force only returns three offensive starters and will struggle.  As for the Rams they will have one of the leagues best running back duo in Kyle Bell and Gatrell Johnosn III that should challenge the Utes and BYU for best two back program, plus Kory Sperry who had an season ending knee injury was a huge play making tight end and will help ease in the new quarterback at Fort Collins.

This year is key for Coach Troy Calhoun, last year he made Air Force the surprise team of the year and will look to rekindle that magic again but this second year will be tough. Again here is another outlet and their view on the Falcons.

88. AIR FORCE

COACH: Troy Calhoun (9-4 in one season).
LAST SEASON: 9-4 overall, 6-2 in Mountain West (second in league).
FINAL 2007 RIVALS.COM RANKING: 43rd.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Junior strong safety Chris Thomas was second on the Falcons with 110 tackles. He added nine tackles for loss, an interception and 10 pass breakups. Thomas is the only returning starter in the secondary. Senior defensive end Ryan Kemp is the best player on a line that returns all three starters (the Falcons use a 3-4 scheme). Kemp had 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, a forced fumble and a blocked kick last season.
STAR POWER: Junior guard Nick Charles not only is one of the best interior linemen in the MWC, he also is a dean’s list student. He started at three line spots for the Falcons last season and was a big reason they averaged 299.5 rushing yards per game.
STRENGTHS: The defensive line is a good one. Thing is, it had better be because the back eight on the defense will have six new starters. Charles is a good building block for an offensive line that will have three new starters. Senior tight end Travis Dekker is a threat.
WEAKNESSES: The offense is a huge concern. Air Force lost its top six rushers. The Falcons have led their league in rushing for 10 consecutive seasons, but that could change. New quarterback Shea Smith, a senior, has eight rushing attempts and 12 passing attempts in his career. Only one receiver who caught more than eight passes is back. The linebackers were the key to a surprisingly good defense last season, and three starters there are gone. The secondary struggled at times last season, and there will be three new starters in that unit, too.
THE BUZZ: Air Force was one of the nation’s biggest surprises last season under Calhoun, a first-year coach who guided the Falcons to a five-victory improvement over 2006. But the Falcons lost 15 starters, and there will be an all-new offensive backfield this season - as well as three new starters on the offensive line. Given Air Force’s reliance on the run – the Falcons have averaged at least 200 rushing yards per game every season since 1981 – that has to be at least a bit worrisome. Calhoun was the league’s coach of the year last season. If he can coax the Falcons into another upper-division finish, he would deserve to be coach of the year again.

There is a possibility that this is Mike Sanford’s last go around unless he can get something done this spring. Sanford has only 6 wins in his 3 seasons as the Rebels head coach. This spring the Quarterback position needs to be finalized because last year the two players were splitting time Travis Dixon who started at the beginning of the season and then there is Omar Clayton and these two seem to be the front runners. Also in the mix for the Rebels are Dack Ishii who appeared in 2 games late in the year, and then also Redshirt Freshman Mike Clausen. Also the defense will need some more help with Beau Bell leaving early for the NFL Draft, even outside of Bell the defense gave up way too many points and the team needs to establish some depth to be able to stay more competitive in conference play for 2008. If the Rebels can settle on a QB who can limit turnovers and be decent this team could easily double their wins to 4, because the Rebels have good receivers in Casey Flair and Ryan Wolfe who are very good. Also toss in tail back Frank Summers who is a solid back, so the main focus needs to find a QB that can run the offense.

The one main question coming into spring was RB Rodney Ferguson who was unable to play in the bowl game, because he did not pass all of his classes.  Looking at their spring roster and depth chart Ferguson is listed on that list, so it looks like he is on his way back to joining the team.  The Lobos return the core of their offense with  6 starters, but they lose their entire offensive line and their top 2 receivers  and then on defense they return 6 starters as well.

Some of the non conference games have yet to be finalized for TV, because of they are road non conference games which will be either on one of the ESPN’s, ABC, Big Ten Network, Fox Sports, and CBS.

One notice is that 93% of the games are on Saturday, and while this is what the conference wanted, but I feel they should have one game a week on a Thursday or Friday night, because there are less choices for football. Yes ESPN has the Thursday night game, but who would not want another game on that night to see some pretty good football. Plus, The Mtn. is on DirecTv now so it’s ok to have these once a week games on Thursday or Friday.

First look leads me to some odd choices for TV, and this could be to the equal coverage game, or the fact that The Mtn. is now on DirecTv. One game that stands out is Navy @ Air Force, Navy has a new coach and Air Force’s team has lost most everyone to graduation. Then the other obvious odd choice is that the BYU v. Utah game has traditional been on The Mtn., BUT have had simulcast on Versus and what is now CBS College Sports. Yeah The Mtn, is on DirecTv but it still not on Dish or other cable providers across the country. This game should be on Versus or at least simulcast the game, but there is a time gap after the first Versus game that begins 2 and a half hours before the Utah and BYU game.
