Thomas Yorke may have made music away from the group Radiohead but he continued using the art of Stanley Donwood for his covers.  The cover is one piece of the 14 panels that make up the piece called London’s View.  Donwood has created all Eraser art work since 1994.  His artwork is considered so much to be a part of the group that many in 2007 opted to buy a gift box.  In the box was the CD as a download, 2 12 inch vinyl records and a lyric book with Donwood’s artwork.  More of Donwood’s Eraser work can be seen at http://www.theeraser.net/Stage3UK/ or at his own website, Slowly Downward.

After our recent tour of Europe over the Easter time, MYJO returned once again to the Netherlands to defend the Dutch National Big Band Contest which we won in 2000. Again the band succeeded and congratulations go also to Tasha Buxton who also won the Drummers’ Prize. Aside from a cash prize, the band also was awarded the Dik Trom Trophy. Jessica:

An excellent , screw-top weekday wine that pairs well with savory, casual dishes. We’ve enjoyed this wine with barbeque, mexican and even giant salads. Fruity, but not overpowering. Nice and smoky with a smooth finish. Somewhat acidic. Kind of like baked beans,,, sweet and savory but definitely a side dish and not a dessert. Does that make sense? Anyway, we’ve bought this wine 2-3 times and, at $10.99, I will buy again. A tasty, reliable, accessible wine. Perfect for potlucks and BYOB’s when you’re not sure what everyone likes but you know they like reds…

John:

Nice smoky and spicy taste but it’s missing the pleasant floral notes of the Backsberg Pinotage we just had. Overall, I like my wines more on the complex side — floral and earthy, sweet and spicy. This one doesn’t have it. A decent value at $11. It’s generally found in our area at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. We’ve had the Indaba Sauvignon Blanc, which is a good crisp summer wine. Good for a weeknight selection but not great.

AutoHeaven - Opel heeft sinds 1987 weer de Auto van het Jaar-titel in handen. De spiksplinternieuwe Insignia heeft de 2009-editie weten te veroveren. Overigens niet met grote overmacht. Het verschil met de nummer 2, de Ford Fiesta, bedraagt slechts één punt. Een dergelijke close finish kwam slechts één keer eerder voor, in 2001. Ook toen had Ford het nakijken.

De Duitse middenklasser kreeg van twee van de 59 juryleden het maximum puntenaantal van 10, maar stond 20 keer bovenaan de lijstjes van de stemmende journalisten. De Fiesta daarentegen behaalde drie maximale scores en 19 eerste plaatsen. De drie Nederlandse juryleden kozen niet unaniem voor de Opel Insignia. Jos Vroomans (Autokampioen) en Jeroen Jongeneel (De Telegraaf) kenden de Opel de meeste punten toe. Ton Roks (Autovisie) zette de Citroën C5 op kop.

Voor Opel is de Insignia de derde Auto van het Jaar. De Kadett in 1985 en de Omega in 1987 gingen de Insignia voor. Het merk eindigde in eerdere edities liefst zes keer op de tweede plaats, waaronder in 2006 toen de Ford S-Max met twee punten verschil de titel voor de neus van de Opel Corsa wegkaapte!

Nummer 7: Renault Mégane een snel met knip en plakwerk gemaakte auto net als Opel eerder met de lelijke Astra.. alleen is deze wat lelijker…

Ben zeker geen Opel fan en snap nog steeds niet waarom Opel nu gewonnen heeft. Ik weet wel dat ik het een zeer geslaagde imitatie Mercedes alla Audi vind met verkeerd logo.. maar in in ieder geval van harte gefeliciteerd!

Nu alleen nog hopen dat die Amerikaanse prutsers van GM jullie niet de DAS om doen…

The Whitest Boy Alive es un grupo que tiene sus inicios en Berlin, formado por el cantante y guitarrista Erlend Oye, el bajista Marcin Oz,  el baterista Sebastian Maschat y el pianista y teclista Daniel Nentwig.

Los inicios se remontan al año 2003, en donde existía todo un boom de la música electrónica, especialmente en Alemania, es por esto que en los inicios del grupo se sentían atraídos con los estilos techno/minimal.

Tras un primer single, Inflation, editado en el 2004, su álbum debut, Dreams, llega a las tiendas en Junio del 2006. Este mismo larga duración es reeditado, un año después, por el sello británico Modular Records, por lo que el grupo actúa por primera vez en el Reino Unido, en Septiembre del 2007.

El nombre del grupo se dice que nació de un profesor de Erlend Oye, que al verlo jugar basketball, con muy poco talento, le comentó que era “the whitest boy alive“.     Se rumoreo que la banda había viajado a México para grabar un sucesor del único disco que poseen en estudio hasta ahora.

Esperemos tener un nuevo disco pronto, acompañado de una gira por Sudamérica!

It was another year of wonder and wander for us, with more to come as we start thinking about un-feathering our soon-to-be-empty nest. Yes, Jonny is a senior in high school, and looking forward to Rollins Country Clu — er, Rollins College next autumn. It’ in Florida. On a lake. Big swimming area, even bigger tanning area. Not far from the beach.
“I know you’d like for me to go to one of those colleges in the Northeast,” Jonny told us during the college search. “But the first day I wake up in my dorm room and see snow on the ground, I’d just go back to bed. In Florida I’d never miss class.” We’re not sure about that, but we are impressed with his potential in sales. Or politics.
Jonny, who is taking drafting and design courses at the local community college, had two high school guidance counselors for a time this year. We think it must be because the school figured he wasn’t getting enough guidance at home.
He was a lifeguard over the summer and now has a part-time job at a local store. Between the two jobs, most of his experience in the work world has involved telling adults what they’re doing wrong. We figure he’s so good at it because he’s had a lot of practice at home.

Lizzie is a junior at Oberlin, turns 21 in February and will live with a local family this spring while she studies art in Brittany. She’ll be fine, given that she’s fluent in both French and MasterCard.
Lizzie summered in London this year. She spent more time prowling around museums and daydreaming on Hampstead Heath than she did working. Tim thought that was good training for freelancing, especially the daydreaming. Lizzie said, “I don’t want to wake up when I’m 25 years old and think, all I’ve done is work hard…”

One day Jonny was on the computer in Tim’s office, his back to the golf tournament on TV. “Hey,” Tim said, “There’s your future wife. Michelle Wie.”
“What are you talking about?” Jonny said distractedly.
“Michelle Wie, teenaged professional golfer,” Tim said. “Your future wife.”
“I’m not marrying anyone named Wee,” Jonny muttered, still concentrating on the computer screen.
“She’s six feet tall, cute, and lives in Hawaii,” Tim said.
“Uh huh,” Jonny replied in that absent way kids do when their parents are talking.
“She’s already a millionaire,” Tim added, “and probably will be a billionaire.”
Jonny spun around, focusing on the TV. “Which one is she?”

Another father-son conversation, as the TV show “Las Vegas” was coming on:
Tim: “I think you might be too young to watch this, with all those hot women.”
Jonny: “I think you might be too old…”

Speaking of which, the AARP members in the family have discovered that as some senses decline — smell, hearing, sight — others sharpen: “Is that food?”
After all those years of buying different pieces of exercise equipment — they’ve turned out to be good for hanging clothes on — we think the next major health purchase should be one of those home defibrillators.
One day when Tim was walking out the door to go for a run, Nancy noticed that his sneakers were creaking and squeaking with each step. She was going to get him a new pair, but then decided against it when he came home, took off the shoes, and walked past her barefoot. She still heard the squeaking and creaking.

The whole bunch of us went to France for two-plus weeks in August, staying in a village where the locals said we were the first Americans ever to visit. We ate and drank so much, from the first croissants every morning to the last carafe of wine and final cheese plate every night, that Nancy was dreading stepping on the scales when we got home. But when she did, she found she had lost 2 pounds. (We think maybe it’s because they don’t have Freedom Fries over there.) Anyway, Nancy is now ready to renounce her American citizenship and move back to the Aveyron for good.

Nancy’s work as a development officer for the Columbia J-School continues to go well, even though it might not seem like there’s a lot of career potential in finding rich generous journalists. (What is that, a double oxymoron?)  Now that she’s no longer a globe-trotting international-business road warrior, Nancy is watching the airlines gradually move her down the periodic table of frequent-flyer status, from platinum to gold to silver. We figure nickel is next. Nancy couldn’t be happier.
She says that Tim is taking “the scenic route” to adulthood, and that he puts the pro in procrastination — especially when it comes to helping her with her garden. Tim wonders why every time Nancy has a gardening idea, he’s the one who gets dirty. He calls it hortitorture.
Tim is finishing up The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Constitution (really) and planning to send the first copy to the White House (not really). He’s also teaching part-time at both NYU and CUNY, which gives him twice as many faculty meetings to skip.
Tim finished his annual triathlon in an upright position, which he always considers a victory, and still plays hoops occasionally. But he has decided after all these years that his best sport is the mood swing.

But The Club’s record of success isn’t so hot; let’s look at their results for this year:

But 5 of their wins weren’t in competitive districts; in fact, 4 out of those 5 were incumbents who would have gotten re-elected even without The Club’s support. One of their wins–Michele Bachmann–was also an incumbent, but she was barely re-elected.  In the end, The Club only won 2 races where their chosen candidates were competitive non-incumbents.

Out of their losses, though, 6 were toss-up races and 3 were incumbents who lost their seats.  The two names highlighted above in red are candidates who had defeated moderate Republicans in primaries only to lose those seats to Democrats.

See, that’s the problem with pushing ideological purity–you end up backing people who can’t possibly win their district. Ideological groups should back the person closest to their beliefs who can still win in the district.

But, by all means, let The Club continue what they’re doing; I can’t wait until every moderate Republican is replaced by a Democrat.

Sorry for the lack of recent Nick Flicks, I recently got married and changed jobs so haven’t had as much spare time as I’d hoped. So now the hiatus is over I decided to get back in the saddle with 2006’s, US slasher film, All the boys love Mandy Lane.

Do they?

Yes they do, a lot.

Do I?

Wait and see.

This is the story of Mandy Lane (Amber Heard), virginal high school student, and the lengths that male high school students will go to try and shag her. Within five minutes one has had already tried and died by (drunkenly) jumping of a roof into a swimming pool and missing. Nine months later, everyone still wants to shag her and a summer party is being arranged in a house in the middle of nowhere. Mandy gets permission to go from her aunt (her parents are dead) and then the mayhem begins. The party starts with the odd practical joke and then a killer shows up and starts picking them off one by one.

Back in the seventies the benchmark of the slasher film was set with John Carpenter’s Halloween. This crown was then challenged throughout the 80’s by the likes of Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and numerous other forgettable offerings. Halloween still remains king but could be considered a product of its time due to the invention of mobile phones, and the Internet.

Fast forward to the nineties and the release of Scream in 1996 brought the slasher genre back with a bang. A new benchmark was set and a new wave of imitators soon followed. For every Scream, there was an ‘I know what you did, didn’t, forgot, or over did last summer’. So when ever I watch a modern slasher film I ask myself does it compare to Scream.

Does Mandy Lane compare to Scream? Not quite, but it is well worth watching and miles apart from other recent entries in the genre thanks to the twist at the end. I also felt it was more realistic in the sense that no one is overly super human nor moves at Superman speed to accommodate the plot which makes a much more beliverble film.

It is well made and acting wise its like watching any high school drama but with unkowns (well to me anywhere). Amber Heard is great as Mandy, and the rest of the cast are likeable in a ’standard slasher film characters by numbers’ kind of way. It’s also great to hear the song ‘Sealed with a kiss’ by Bobby Vinton at the end. Oh how it could have been a different film if they had used Jason Donovan’s version.
