As you may or may not know, when I was still playing in Pet Flyz, I started a solo project back in 2

As you may or may not know, when I was still playing in Pet Flyz, I started a solo project back in 2003, called The Watermark High. It was basically just me on acoustic guitar and vocals. I played a couple of shows in Pretoria and Cape Town and released an EP called “(What) Are You Thinking?” in that same year. I put the whole thing on hold for quite a while, did a new demo song in 2006 and then started writing a new EP in 2007. My sound changed quite dramatically over the years and “the new” Watermark High was going to be a band (which it is today).

In May this year, I uploaded The Watermark High’s new EP called “Disappear With Me”, as a free download, from our Myspace page. Considering that we haven’t really promoted it at all and that we haven’t played a show yet (as a band), I was really stoked with the downloads we managed to get (almost 500). So the other day I thought I’d log into the EP’s download stats and was surprised to see that in the first two weeks of November alone, it’s been downloaded nearly 1100 times!

The Watermark High - Disappear With Me EP (2008)

I traced the link and found out that we ended up on some Asian (I think it’s Chinese) website recently. From the extremely broken translation we managed to get, it was a mediocre review (I think) but it resulted in so many downloads, I don’t really care. This is really strange, but exciting. Anyway…

I’m going to take the EP down at the end of this month (November), as it doesn’t really reflect our current sound and as we’re hoping to upload some new, more current demos in December/January. So if you haven’t already, download the EP from our Myspace page before the end of this month.

It feels so amazing knowing that my music is out there, and that people are listening, all over the world…even in China. Who would have thought?

I know a lot of people who attended Proposition 8 protests last weekend. Time will tell how effectiv

I know a lot of people who attended Proposition 8 protests last weekend. Time will tell how effective they were, but I think it would be helpful to remember what could or could not be accomplished by them.

No protests outside of California (and arguably, not even there) were going to undo the initiative there, and certainly not directly. It’s not like the legislature can renege a public initiative based on out-of-state rally turnout. The first goal of protesters, I think, should be to show solidarity with Californian activists and encourage them for what will be a prolonged fight. Events like Saturday’s protests increase connections, brainstorming, and a sense of community, and you can be sure new plans emerged from the day.

Secondly, U.S. protesters may have been flexing their numbers in each locality, reminding their lawmakers that the issue is not dead and (depending on the state) either discouraging lawmakers from passing similar initiatives or standing in defiance of initiatives that had already passed. A distant third possibility I can’t overlook is the gathering of information. Information is just as important for political movements as it is for marketers and militaries; if and when nationwide action is needed, Saturday provided an excellent dry run AND sizable contact lists.

Compare this with the Iraq War protests in 2002 and 2003; the threat of an invasion of Iraq triggered the largest international protest ever, with one European city alone surpassing 3 million in attendance. The cities with the highest attendance were those participating in the invasion coalition and many supporting nations have reduced their participation since - but none pulled out immediately after the protests. As for the US, despite several huge rallies in Washington and other major US cities, the protests did not seem to slow the march toward war.

A colleague of mine is of the opinion that the Vietnam War might have actually ended a little sooner if protests in that era had not been so fractious and antagonizing. He is a trainer of activists and has always stressed that when the goal is to be seen and convince a national audience that you have the moral high ground, your message must be simple and consistent and your messengers must be perfectly behaved.

Of course the most effective use of rallies and protests in US history came during the Civil Rights Era, but they did not come overnight. Marches during the 60’s were only the latest steps in a long, gradual climb dating back to Rosa Parks’ bus defiance in 1955. Direct actions from sit-ins and boycotts helped spark outrage because of the violence police often used against nonviolent protesters. Doing the right thing wasn’t enough reason for many Americans until they saw the consequences on their TVs. While it would be a bit much to say organizers wished for the violence, they did plan for it rather than planning around it. In contrast, violence and suppression at marches over the last ten years or so have been much more sporadic and less extreme.

In the 60’s, boycotts were very effective locally - but again, it didn’t happen overnight. The Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted just over twelve months - no small duration for a service many people counted upon daily.

With Prop 8, there is discussion of boycott as well, but so far nothing definitive. Individual merchants have been targeted, but the scope of corporate power has altered the landscape of business since the 60’s. While a handful of household names will stick their necks out to support progress, none will allow themselves to be caught opposing it.

So would you boycott a particular company, large or small, over the politics of its founder, even if those politics are not directly related to the business at hand? Here’s a nice, juicy, complicated example:

Although the extent of the support has at times been overstated, the founder and CEO of Curves International (one Gary Heavin, with some credit also given to his wife Diane) is an outspoken ally and financial supporter of pro-life organizations. Yet his company has provided a service, helping women to live healthier lives and even develop camaraderie along the way. Kind of sticky, isn’t it? Is he all evil? All good? Somewhere in-between?

OK, so most men are off the hook on the boycott question, because most of the gyms are women-only, but here’s a further complication to keep you involved: Curves is allied with General Mills to produce cereal bars and possibly other food products bearing the Curves name.

If you are a pro-choice voter, how would/does this color your business with Curves and/or General Mills?

Lots of news this year, much of it astonishing, some of it even good. The best news, and most astonishing: After 22-plus years, Nancy is leaving Reuters as of Jan. 1. She’s been talking about a change for years, but she realized the time was right when she took an hour off one afternoon to go mattress shopping – and dozed off while testing mattresses. The salesman, impressed, said it was the first time he’d actually seen it.

Not ready to retire, Nancy is considering lots of opportunities. Fortunately for prospective employers, her mind is as sharp as ever. Before a business trip to San Antonio, she asked us, “What is that old saying about the Alamo?” Tim’s initial plan was for Nancy to do some corporate communications and PR consulting, and he set her up at a desk and computer next to his. Then we encountered that astonishing – and scary – new concept for households with two or more freelancers or telecommuters: home office politics. Tim is now urging Nancy to apply for a job at a mattress store.

Lizzie got the news a few days ago that she’s been accepted to Oberlin College in Ohio. (You may have heard Garrison Keillor announce it on Prairie Home Companion.) Oberlin was Lizzie’s first choice, and Jonny’s, too; there’s a fireworks warehouse on the way, so he’ll be able to restock regularly for the next four years. (It better be only four years…)

Now that she’s almost 18 and driving and working at the local bridal store, we have been inviting – and sometimes pressuring – Lizzie to accompany us to many more adult dinners and cocktail parties. We tell her she’s more grown up now, she’ll appreciate the conversation, she might make some connections, she’ll learn how to handle herself, etc. “I finally figured out why you want me to go to all these parties with you now,” she said one night. “You want me to be the designated driver.”

On the last day of spring break, when the kids had a week off school, Lizzie complained at the dinner table that she “hadn’t gotten to sleep in” during the entire break.
Three people stared at her in astonishment.
“You didn’t get up yesterday ’til one in the afternoon,” Jonny finally protested.
“I know,” Lizzie said sullenly. “But you woke me up. That’s not sleeping in.”
In truth, we’re all trying to be extra nice to Lizzie lately, and not just because she’s going off to college next year. As of Jan. 2, she’s the only one of us with a job.

Jonny continues to inhabit the bizarro world of the 15-year-old, perhaps best described as Animal House meets Lord of the Flies. At one point, we were concerned that Jonny was eating too much pizza – every day for lunch at school, sometimes on the way from home school, and often when he went out with friends at night. One evening when Jonny confessed that he had eaten pizza for both lunch and dinner, Nancy turned to one of his laughing friends and asked if he had eaten pizza for both lunch and dinner, too.
“No way,” the kid said. “I had six Dunkin Donuts for dinner.”
Jonny combined wanderlust with blood lust during a rugged Outward Bound surfing course in Costa Rica. We were astonished that he had volunteered to help with the campfire cooking, until we learned that it meant he got to cut the head off a live chicken.

Before riding the bike leg for a team in the annual local triathlon, Jonny went on a training ride with Tim. Pumping and puffing up a hill, Tim looked back to see if Jonny was keeping up – and Jonny was right behind him, waving and smiling, riding no hands.
Jonny’s team of 14-year-olds did well in the triathlon but Tim, competing on his own as usual, had an astonishing bike crash. In the hospital trauma center, he overheard a nurse telling an X-ray technician about his injuries (broken shoulder, etc.). “Ooh, a triathlete,” the technician cooed. “I’m gonna check him out.” She came in and looked at Tim and the other two patients there, an 85-year-old man and a 400-pound woman. She looked at the three of them again, puzzled, and finally shrugged and left.

Tim had a summer (and autumn, and early winter…) of rehab. He spent far too much time with a petite physical therapist with a sweet face and the heart of one of Uday’s torture-chamber managers. During the weeks his arm was in a sling, an astonishing number of people – including strangers – came up and offered to arm wrestle.
Ailments aside, Tim continues to think of himself as a trophy husband, though apparently not everyone does. In February, Nancy let slip to neighbors that she had received a dozen red roses for Valentine’s Day. “From who?” they demanded.

That’s it from us. We hope you have a happy and healthy (keep your bike shiny side up) 2004, and that you have as much fun (and not as much physical therapy) as we will.

Tim, Nancy, Lizzie, Jonny

Wah, jadi reuni kecil – kecilan nih. Lumayanlah buat say hai dan temu kangen.

Jeebus Mary Marsupial, why teh fuck would anyone want to steal my Kia? It’s such a harmless thing… Oh wait. That’s the reason. Inconspicuousness. Farking great. It’s gone forever. Good thing it was the only car we had. Good thing it’s getting cold here in Kansas. Good thing it was paid for, ahhhhhhhh, there’s that silver lining.

You know. It’s one thing for the officer taking your information to ask if you had locked the car (yes, yes I did). It’s another thing entirely for the same officer to inform you that stealing cars is hard.
The blank look that I had on my face for an hour after hearing that I’m sure was the result of shock. As if looking at the spot where my car once was, it’s nice covered spot devoid of any Kia-ness, wasn’t enough. I had to shake myself out of stupor in order to get back inside and start making phone calls.

And the worse part about it is that getting something so important to the daily functioning of your life taken from you *does* things to your soul. I’m angry and unable to trust others outside of my immediate friends and family. I’m pissed off in general that whatever it takes for auto theft to become obsolete is so far down the road that my kid’s grandkids probably won’t live to see the day.

And that line of thinking goes absolutely nowhere, or, rather, straight into a pit of self-wrought hell that can suck you down forever if you let it. There’s only one thing that you can do, and that’s to keep moving. But gotdammit, I’m going to bitch about it for awhile before doing so.

…my mum will soon walk in to bother me.. and ask me what i am doing. i of course will tell her home work… ok i was wrong, she just walked in. her friend nichole came over, fuck. now she’s yelling at me to go bring the clothes in from the dryer… yes we live in ghetto apartments. 75 cents to wash 75 cents to dry. fuck. well… i kind of forgot my train of thought… fuck… haha i love that word, honestly. my arm itches. bah. i got to thinking of her today, my ex-best friend, knew addition to my hate list… prolly because i was talking to her twin whom i love so dearly. i just kept playing through all the times i spent with her… it hurts so much to remember how we were. we told each other everything. we could laugh all night. i miss having her around in that way. she was so beautiful. she was my butterfly until this past summer when she lied to me about being with someone who i thought really cared for me. i lost all trust in her. she has been talking about me behind my back and i never believed she would do that. i just don’t know. i feel like crap. i need a friend, a girl friend. girls are so beautiful and fragile i don’t understand them and i am one. though sometimes i wish i wasn’t. i wish i were nothing, that way i would have no inhibitions, nothing to hold me back, nothing to be held accountable to. i could just be myself it wouldn’t matter. i wouldn’t be subjected to the torture of never being good, pretty, or skinny enough. there is a wall that stops me from being who i want to be. i would like to feel sexy and attractive but that’s impossible, too many people have already convinced me otherwise. so i cover up, ashamed and undiscovered. what else was i thinking about today? too many things to mention in this damned blog. in a strange way i hope nobody reads this but i have given up caring. if anyone doesn’t want to read this they don’t have to, i wasn’t writing it for them anyway. i write it for me. because i like myself. i think…

There There

2 + 2 = 5

Lucky

The National Anthem

Talk Show Host

Where I End And You Begin

Climbing Up The Walls

The Gloaming

No Surprises

Fake Plastic Trees

Sit Down, Stand Up

Go To Sleep

Sail To The Moon

Paranoid Android

Idioteque

Everything In It’s Right Place

Just

Karma Police

Street Spirit (Fade Out)
