I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

Welcome back to The Sultan’s insight on the wide world of sports. It’s a shame that he has to always be so critical on certain things, but today is no different.

In the words of Sir Charles Barkley, this guy’s a knucklehead. “That guy” is Donovan McNabb. The Sultan has been a fan of McNabb. He was a great collegiate player and has been successful in the NFL, except he can’t win the big one. Now The Sultan knows why: he has the mental IQ of a gnat.

If you’re a quarterback in the NFL, you’re supposed to be the smartest player on the field. You aren’t required to be savy off the gridiron, but at least make it seem that way. For those of you who are unaware of Donovan’s recent comments, The Sultan refers you to yesterday’s game between the Eagles and Bengals. When 60 minutes of hard-hitting football action was not enough, the game went into overtime. The extra 15 minutes was even sloppier than the first 4 quarters, and both teams failed to either put the ball in the endzone or between those yellow things behind it. Thus, when McNabb’s Hail Mary attempt was batted down as the clock struck 0:00, the overtime period was over and the game ended in a tie. What happened shortly afterward was baffling.

As number 5 began to take questions from the media in his post game press conference, it was easy to tell that he doesn’t know how to tie his own shoes. He told the media, many times, that he honestly had NO IDEA that NFL games could end in a tie. It’s a rare occurrence, but there have been 17 tied NFL games in the history of the league. 15 of those ties (not including Sunday’s game) have come in McNabb’s lifespan. How can he honestly say that he had no clue that you could end up deadlocked after 75 minutes? There was even a tied game between the Steelers and Falcons in 2002. That’s only 6 years ago. McNabb was a permanent fixture in the league in 2002. Donovan later went on to say that he realized that ties must be a reality when he got the Hail Mary call with several seconds to play. To make it worse, he said that he would hate to see this happen in the playoffs or the Super Bowl. News flash #5: You keep playing in the postseason until there is a winner. You don’t share the Lombardi Trophy. Knucklehead. The Sultan is dumbfounded.

Yes, this rule might be a little silly during the regular season, especially since ties are no longer a part of college football and hockey like they used to be. But the rules are the rules, and they apply for everyone. The worse part, is that McNabb openly came to the media and made stupid comments. When the final whistle blew, he knew that ties were a part of the NFL. There was no sense in coming to the media and making a fool of himself. Keep it to yourself Donovan, you’ll look a lot smarter for it.

The Sultan believes this is the last straw for McNabb in Philly. He was supposed to be the savior for the Eagles when he was drafted, and after an injury plagued career this was the year he was supposed to finally be healthy and take Philly to the promised land. Now the Eagles are 5-4-1. They still have a shot at the playoffs, but The Sultan doesn’t see this team making a dramatic run. These comments are going to be the icing on the cake. McNabb’s contract is up at the end of the season, and so will his run in Philly. He may find success somewhere else in the league, but to Eagles fans he’ll be known as the QB who couldn’t win the big game. And the knucklehead.

Until next time. Keep it in the shortgrass…

This was the year of the road trip, the year that braces came off, and the year that Tim and Nancy finally accepted that they are not cool, they are never going to be cool, and they don’t care. It was also the year that three of us wore the same size clothes and shoes – thereby opening to Lizzie the footwear vaults of the Imelda Marcos of Ridge Road.

One morning recently, Jonny asked, “Lizzie, can I borrow your sweatshirt?” We were pleased. So polite, instead of just stealing it, like usual. “Uh, well, I guess so,” Lizzie replied. So generous, instead of just snapping “no” for no apparent reason, like usual.
“As long as you don’t get it dirty or wrinkled,” she said.
“Great, thanks,” Jonny said. “Where is it?”
“Somewhere on the floor in my room.”

In January, Lizzie, 16, went away for a ski weekend for the first time. Sitting at home that evening, Nancy and Tim found themselves marveling, and commiserating, at how quickly Lizzie has grown up. It seemed like only yesterday that they had to remind her to put on her hat and gloves when she went out to play in the snow. Then the phone rang. It was Lizzie, calling from Vermont. She had forgotten her hat and gloves.

Lizzie is really buckling down on her studies in anticipation of college, and Jonny is really in touch with nature – especially when they are asked to help with chores around the house. Lizzie suddenly has homework that must be done, or else she won’t get into a good college. And Jonny suddenly has to answer a call of nature. He’s a model of regularity: every time there’s work to do, he has to go. Some parents might be upset about this lack of support from their kids, but we secretly admire their cunning; it should serve them well in the grownup world, particularly if they ever become lawyers, bankers, accountants, CEOs or teachers. Or writers. Or if they ever become parents themselves.

Jonny, 14, was encouraged to set some goals this year. He decided to grow his hair as long as he could. This has led Nancy and Tim to encourage (and plead, and threaten) him to get a trim once in a while. Talk about turning into your parents. Jonny got a cell phone, but Lizzie didn’t want one; it would be easier to locate her when she’s out with friends, many of whom now drive. Lizzie hopes to get her license on her 17th birthday (the age in New Jersey), but so far parallel parking remains a vague concept.

Tim and Nancy are already dreading Lizzie’s departure for college in 2004. Sure, they’ll miss her, but the biggest problem is that she’s just now finally getting good at unloading the dishwasher and mowing the lawn. Nancy and Tim hate the idea of having to start doing all that stuff themselves again. (Or trying to get Jonny out of the bathroom.)

Jonny, who continues to live by the motto “A fart is never not funny,” always wanted to drive cross-country in the worst way. This past summer he did – with his dad. Before they left on the two-month trip, friends loaded them up with maps, go-cups, dashboard hula girls and compasses, hemorrhoid ointment for Tim and earplugs for Jonny. (Tim didn’t need the ointment, thankfully, but Jonny did sometimes sneak in the earplugs for a respite from the authoritative commentary on passing countryside.)

Nancy insisted that the trip meant a second car. We briefly considered one of those new environmentally-friendly hybrids, but they’re not fast enough for Nancy. The new car proves Nancy is indeed in the prime of life – she still looks good in a sporty little black swimsuit, but she looks even better in a sporty little black BMW. The vehicle came with the license plate MWG90T, which we decided stands for My Wife Goes 90 Tops. (It should’ve said 120). Jonny always has the music blasting in Nancy’s car, but he turns it off on highway entry ramps so he can hear her winding out the RPMs. Meanwhile, we take the old Volvo on college visits; maybe it will help Lizzie get financial aid.

Nancy was feeling guilty about keeping the new ride for herself while sending her son and husband off on an 11,000-mile journey in the old Volvo. So she called “Car Talk” on National Public Radio. The Tappett brothers convinced her it was OK. Their rationale: (a) the Volvo was sure to break down, (b) Tim and Jonny were looking for adventure, so (c) Nancy shouldn’t deprive them the adventure of breakdowns. (For more on the guys’ misadventures, including how Jonny and his fireworks stayed one step ahead of the law in 29 states, and how Tim let Jonny take the wheel in states where he was old enough to buy a gun or get married, check out the journal and pictures on our Website.)

Mixing jogging with hobbling, Tim still occasionally enters races. But the thrill of victory has long been replaced by de agony of de feet. He did another triathlon, but it was hardly the Iron Man. More like the Rusty Codger. Tim was the oldest guy in the Clydesdale division – or, depending on how you look at it, the fattest guy in the Jurassic division.

That’s it from us for this year. We hope you had as much fun as we did in 2002, and as much as we hope to have in 2003.

Tim, Nancy, Lizzie and Jonny

The new Museum of Mummification on the Luxor Corniche first opened in May 1997 and is the first in the world dedicated to this subject. So far I have avoided visiting the museum believing that mummies would be on display there, something I don’t agree with, so I was a little reluctant when Mary suggested we go there this morning. She didn’t want to do anything else today so I eventually decided to go with her, walking all the way along the Corniche to the modern building by the Nile. I must say the entrance is very nicely done with colourful mosaic tiles above the staircase leading down to the museum.

The modern purpose built museum consists of only one large room, but the visitor is guided around well-lit and beautifully displayed exhibits and story boards which describe the process of mummification from beginning to end, as well as the religious customs associated with burials. The purpose of mummification in ancient Egypt was to preserve the body of the deceased so that they could dwell in the afterlife, in the realm of the gods. The process began naturally when the ancient people discovered that bodies buried in the hot dry sand of Egypt would be preserved almost intact. Techniques were enhanced from very early times, using natron to dry out the body, removing certain organs and wrapping the remains tightly in bandages of linen, often covered with a thick resin. The peak of the art was reached by the end of the New Kingdom Period.

The museum is extremely dark inside with spotlights on the exhibits, but it was hopeless for photography, even with a fast film in my camera. An interesting and colourful collection of well-preserved New Kingdom mummy-cases, mostly from the dryer climate of Upper Egypt, is displayed in the entrance to the museum along with a statue of Anubis, the jackal-headed god who leads the dead into the underworld. We walked around the guided walkways and I was relieved that no bodies were on display - at least not human ones, but there were several animal mummies including a crocodile, a cat and a ram of Khnum with its gilded case from Elephantine. In glass cases, many artefacts associated with the process of mummification are displayed with detailed descriptions of their use. Model funerary boats, amulets, wooden statuettes and a fine set of canopic jars were interesting, but I just couldn’t get excited the way I do in other museums.

We had lunch in the Anubis Restaurant which is on a wide terrace behind the museum at river level. It was quite expensive but nice to sit by the Nile and look out over towards the West Bank, where we could watch the feluccas darting backwards and forwards with each gust of a breeze. It’s cloudy today but the clouds are keeping in the heat and the air is almost unbreathable. Back at the hotel later in the afternoon Mary and I had a little siesta - unheard of for me, but walking in the heat made us both feel lethargic.

Solą jest Jezus Chrystus, a my jesteśmy potrawą. My zostajemy „przyprawieni” nowym życiem, pochodzącym od Pana Jezusa, podczas chrztu.

Młodzież szuka sensu życia, a szczególnie poszukuje czegoś najwyższego, pełnego, niezależnego doskonałego (Absolut). Odpowiednikiem tego wszystkiego, jest Bóg. Bóg to sens życia. Bóg to Absolut.

My jesteśmy stróżami poranka, a Jezus jest słońcem.

Bóg przychodzi i daje nam światło.

Światło wiary oświetla nam drogę do Nieba.

Personalmente nutro piena fiducia in Fabbri. Stasera Italia-Corea finisce 5-0. Una passegiata si salute. Ci penseranno Mazzola e Rivera, vedrai….”

Ah, all’americana…

Massim. nel 2008: “No! No!No!
