Big Canvas PhotoShare

Steve Gibson is a well respected security journalist, known around the world through his Security No

Steve Gibson is a well respected security journalist, known around the world through his Security Now podcast, on Leo Laporte’s TWiT network.

Steve has written some very cunning software which randomly generates strings of characters. Even the page which displays the cryptographic strength, non-repeating strings is secure, because it’s marked as having expired back in 1999, so your browser doesn’t cache it. [Visit grc.com]

By using these passwords in place of the English phrases we all normally use, you can reduce the chances of a brute force dictionary hack gaining access to your private information - which as republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin found out, even Yahoo! mail can be all to easy accessed. [More on this at the washingtonpost.com]

The problem with long random passwords is that they’re impossible to remember. You could paste them into a text file and keep that on a USB thumb drive, to which only you have access. But Microsoft Windows is itself fundamentally weak - anyone can change the password which is used to access your account - and it’s just as trivial to gain access to a Windows machine via the internet.

As far as we know there are no known ways of remotely accessing Apple Mac OS X and local account root passwords are similarly very robust, but it’s only a matter of time before someone, somewhere figures out how to get around this and if, in the case of someone having physical access to a machine where the password text file is just left laying around in the documents folder, or in a sticky note, any steps taken to lock down important data is immediately and very simply undone.

In steps Pastor, by Markus Mehlau. A very simple tool which keeps your log-in details (URL, username, et cetera) and passwords inside a locked document.

There is a problem of infinite regress, naturally, in that you must choose an easy to remember pass-phrase to unlock the software - so we’re not talking military grade encryption here - but in the event your laptop gets stolen or your computer is in a common area, where other people who share your house can easily sneak a peek at your private data, Pastor is extremely handy.

For a whole lot more security and flexibility, you have to go a long way to beat 1Password. ScreenCasts Online host, Don McAlister, has produced an excellent overview of the product and how it can be used to protect you, not only from phishing scams, but how it integrates itself automatically into all the commonly used web browsers, to safely log you into sites using passwords which are stored in your OS X’s Keychain.

There’s a fully working time limited demo of 1Password available for download from agilewebsolutions.com

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have had no access to Mr Cheese’s Random Ramblings - sorry!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have had no access to Mr Cheese’s Random Ramblings - sorry! I could have posted from my PSP, but I used a strong password generator to create my WordPress password so I couldn’t remember it to log in. In case you were wondering, I use 1Password to log in to websites where I have this situation.

Anyway, this week, several events have happened:

Tuesday, we went on a bike ride down the Cuckoo Trail from Polegate to Hailsham, stopping at the Common Pond in Hailsham for lunch.

Yesterday, we went bowling, and I lost one of the games to my seven-year-old brother, but beat him in the second game.

Today, we went to Pizza Hut for lunch, where we had an all-you-can-eat buffet, followed by banoffee pie for pudding - yum!

So it has been a fairly fun week, but unfortunately only a week today until school starts again…

To follow up on my less that flattering post on the 1Password for iPhone/Pod application…

The new updated version is everything it should be, bugs are gone, stability and usability is back on par with the desktop application.

I can now strongly recommend the application to anyone, and if you have a Mac and the desktop version then life just continues to get better for you.

…and yes, ignore my previous post and consider it a prime example of a company listening to it’s users (although I knew Agile did anyway way before now, you don’t get to be a top OS-X software company for nothing!).

And I’m more than happy to wait for the password generator to appear in a later version, infact I would go as far as to say that it should be a purchased application since that one feature alone makes the product invaluable to everyone!

Although I still stand on my former article on my favorite iPhone Apps, here are a few more free iPh

Although I still stand on my former article on my favorite iPhone Apps, here are a few more free iPhone Apps I’ve tried and still use.

1. WeatherBug- This is a great app, and I was shocked it was free. It’s basically a Weather application (obviously) that not only gives you a temperature forecast, but also Humidity, Heat Index, Wind Velocity, Wind Direction, Gust Velocity, and even Dew Point. The second portion is a Google Maps Radar and shows you storms all around the globe and which direction they’re heading. The third portion is web-cams from near your location so you can physically “see” the weather near you. As an added bonus, the App provides “Active Alerts” which show up on the app even when your on the home screen in the form of a little “1″. The Active Alerts can consist of Droughts, T-Storms, Snow, etc. Great app, worth $10 to me.

2. Palringo Instant Messenger- Palringo Instant Messenger is the first multi-client IM app to come to the App Store. It’s free just like the standard AIM app, but on Palringo it’s better because you can see all your buddies on every client. Not only that, but as an added bonus you can send photos from your iPhone’s Camera Roll. Simple, easy, works, free.

3. 1Password- This self-explanatory free application keeps up with all your passwords in one simple way, has an optional 2 layers of password protection on your passwords. Free. Get it?

So, those are some Apps to fill up your new 8/16GB iPhone. Try em. If you have any tips, questions, comments, concerns, you can tell me at tylerhaze@gmail.com.

For those of us in the know, 1Password is a shareware application that has become an indispensable tool in my web browsing arsenal. Created by a team of local GTA software developers, 1Password is of course a password keeper, but what is special about this one is that is integrates into your favourite browser. It shows up as a button on your browsers tool bar, so when you come to a login screen you can click the button and have 1Password fill in your login details for you. Very handy! Plus all the data is stored in Mac OSX’s encrypted keychain safe and sound. Imagine this convenience on your iPhone, because the iPhone version just showed up on the apple app store today… AND it is FREE!

It finally arrived in the store. And sad to say it’s not good

Some notes from my testing.

1. There appears to be no way to delete an entry on the iPhone/iPod directly. This is bad since not everyone will have the desktop version, but more than that…an application that allows you to add but not remove?

2. Adding an entry is hit and miss, I’ve tried several times to add some notes and so far it has only worked once. It seems they just do not hit the database or something after you enter them.

3. Usability of the interface is nowhere near as pleasing as the desktop version. The input boxes are some what unobvious. Some areas you click on a box and it goes directly to edit mode, and others you click on and it turns out to not be a text entry box. Needs a lot of work here for those that don’t know what they are looking at or are familiart with the desktop application.

You can test this for yourself, just add a new login item and click on the URL box and you get to add the URL. Then click on the two boxes in login information and they are not text entry boxes, the text entry boxes do infact appear below in the All fields section. Not at all obvious to a new user.

4. Instructions in the application and on the site giving you directions to sync with the desktop version (and everyone should have it, it is outstanding!) are infact wrong as of writing this post and the current 1password desktop version.

5. Password generator? This is one of the best features of the desktop version, and something I think many would be more than happy to pay for. Sys Admins I am sure would love to have the password generator out in the field where they need to create strong passwords all the time.

I am certain it will get better and become the quality that we all know Agile Solutions can deliver, but wow this have every sign of being released way way too soon just to get it in the store.

I look forward to posting that the application has been improved in a post very soon, as I am sure it will be. But for now, might want to think twice if you don’t use the desktop version to add/remove/edit entries.

[OS X only] I purchased my copy of 1Password back during Macheist II and have fallen in love ever since. For those who don’t know, 1Password is a manager for web passwords, but with many more capabilities than one might expect. Firstly, it integrates into almost any modern browser, placing an icon at the top for easy access to all web passwords. Another neat feature of 1Password is that it will also store “identities” containing your name, occupation, address, email, etc. to make filling in forms online as easy as clicking a mouse button. It also contains a built-in password generator with a slew of options from the number of characters (from 1 to 50) to the ratio of digits to symbols. Also, (as though that weren’t enough) you are able to place all of your credit card information in a “wallet”. Not only can you put your credit cards in there, but also items such as memberships, passports, Social Security Numbers, iTunes accounts and much more. Finally, you are also able to create “secure notes” which house any information that you would like to be kept confidential.

Not too long ago, Agile Web Solutions, the makers of 1Password, implemented a similar option for the iPhone and iPod touch which prompts a dialogue box overlaying the current web site, asking for the master password and the options available for the site. I found this feature helpful but not entirely as great of a solution as the one for desktop computers. But once again, 1Password has found out how to create a brilliant workaround - thanks to the iPhone and iPod touch SDK and the AppStore. The plan, according to Agile Web Solutions’ David Teare, is to create their own browser with 1Password built in. They were forced to do that because Apple has disallowed any modifications to their own applications. According to Teare, they’re including some “cool features” that will “make users not want to use Safari directly anyway.” Sounds good to me.

Last but not least, the 1Password team has just released a new feature to their killer application (like there weren’t enough features already) entitled “Bookmarks”. This opens up a well designed HUD panel that contains all of your passwords and with a simple click, directs you to the web site and logs you in. Also, it includes a search bar at the top for easy finding of all of your passwords.

Also to note: It protects against phishing sites by alerting you that you have never entered information on that site before. Also, their customer support is well beyond my expectations, replying to my email within the hour.

As a daily iPhone user I was on the search for a Software, that would store all your passwords in Safari without having to re-enter them everytime you connect to a website where a login is required. So I bought 1Password and I must say it is _total_crap_! It has not worked for one single website that I use, not a single one! I have no idea why this software exists! Today I found the following software, for free: iRemember from iSpazio. Sometimes it is worth it not trying to hard and just to wait for the best solution (which can be free a lot of the times).

3. Plist speichern.
4. 1Password (neu) starten.
5. Alle Browser Extensions installieren.

Fertig.
Und schön alle Bugs an Apple senden…

After dragging my feet for a very long time on the issue, I’ve decided to upgrade all my passwords for all the web sites and services I use. Like a lot of people, I was in the habit of reusing the same passwords for different sites (a big no-no) because I was afraid I’d forget them.

So, how was I going to use the really cool password generator from GRC.com, especially when you’re getting results like:

t8CbNWCbCdWJpQmjnVZfqcXtpptKKcACrqoIB418ppDNtGtqEywYj402l8CjYI3

Well, there are a couple of solutions for everyone out there — RoboForm for the PC and 1Password for the Mac. I’m using the latter and I have to say that it’s pretty awesome. What it does is save all your ridiculous, impossible-to-remember passwords in an encrypted file that can only be opened with your own memorized password. (So in other words, you just have to remember the one. Mix letters, numbers, and punctuation in a random but meaningful-to-you way for that one, kids. Acronyms are you friend (See Note below).)

Anyway, both 1Password and RoboForm integrate with your browsers so that you can have it autofill all those hideous passwords you have. Check those out — because, seriously, web security is getting crazy right now. You have to protect all your personal info to avoid identity theft.

-Michael Eric Brown

Note: Here’s an example of how to create a memorable master password for something like 1Password: create an acronym that’s easy for you to remember. Like My favorite baseball team is the Boston Red Sox = MfbtitBRS. Now think of a couple of sets of numbers that mean something to you, too. In this example, I’ll use the two years that the Sox have won recently: 2004 and 2007. Use punctuation to help mix this all up: 2004-MfbtitBRS-2006. That’s actually wicked strong.

The MacHeist Retail Bundle Unboxed

There’s another bundle up at MacHeist which has a few worthwhile applications in it and from the sound of the email, might have another handful of surprises coming towards the end of the sale. (That is a referral link, by the way. Purchases through it benefit me… somehow. Feel free to use or ignore it.)

As an already registered member, we know you may own a lot of these apps, so in an effort to keep you interested, and involved in the world of Mac software, we’ve been hard at work putting together a truly awesome referral program. It’s time to call up those old friends… because this time around, we will be unveiling multiple tiers of software prizes, each crammed with several options. Take your pick, and have fun as always.

I’d definitely recommend Awaken if you’re in the market for alarm software. I wake up to it everyday and the only time it has ever failed me was actually my fault. There’s no slicker, more reliable alarm clock out there, as far as I’m concerned.

Coversutra is a neat little application that I’ve started using somewhat frequently since I picked it up in the last MacHeist bundle. It works best if you have a well organized iTunes library and it integrates with last.fm, if you’re into that. (I don’t really get last.fm, but that’s for another entry, really.)

I got a bit of use out of Wallet when I got it free from the Mac Giving Tree, (a December extension of MacHeist) but I’ve since replaced it with 1Password, which quickly became one of the most useful applications on my Mac.

Devonthink Personal looks interesting and I’m actually going to download a demo today and see what there is to see. It’s one of those “organize everything here” database applications which appeal to the side of me that hates dealing with Firefox’s bookmarks menu. The trial apparently has “150 hours of non-continuous runtime” which sounds like plenty of time to evaluate it. (6.25 Days? Hmm…) Really though, the important thing to remember is that if Devonthink ends up being worthwhile, the bundle is nearly worth that application alone, given that the bundle is $49.95 and Devonthink Personal is $39.95.

Then there’s XSlimmer. I’ve considered purchasing this several times in the past because the idea of smaller applications that launch more quickly appeals to me, even if I can’t slim WoW’s binaries.

And finally, while Writeroom is probably a fine full-screen text editor, I’d personally recommend Scrivener. Scrivener has even more robust full-screen text editing capabilities than Writeroom, along with an indispensable creative-works centric organizational GUI that makes doing any creative writing a joy, rather than a chore.

Most of these apps are old hat and/or already in my applications folder, but anybody who missed out on the MH bundles in the past might find this bundle worth the cash.

So, I’ve been trying out the Flock browser which is based on Firefox. However, it’s twis

So, I’ve been trying out the Flock browser which is based on Firefox. However, it’s twist is that it’s designed to integrate with a bunch of different social services. I have it set up to work with my Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and Photobucket accounts, as well as this WordPress blog. It will also work with things like Twitter, del.icio.us. It also supports RSS feeds, which I’ve imported my whole set of feeds into. So far it’s replaced two applications on my desktop (Safari and NetNewsWire), and if I were to set it up with my email, I could get rid of a third.
It was very easy to set it up. I installed the 1Password plugin for it and fired it up. I was asked whether I wanted to import information from another browser, which let me grab EVERYTHING (bookmarks, cookies, history, saved passwords, etc.) from Safari. It auto-detected when I visited a site that it could integrate with (Facebook). However, to get it to add my Facebook I had to log out and then back in, which was a minor annoyance, but after that it worked perfectly. Getting my RSS feeds in was a bit harder, I had to export them from NetNewsWire as OMPL and then import them, but that was easy and quick.
If you ask me, it does its thing pretty well. It takes a bit of getting used to to use the social features, but in the end it’s a lot more polished to do it all through the one interface than to use a bunch of tools that are inconsistent. However, I miss a few things. First off, it’s slow. A lot slower than Safari and Camino, and even a bit slower than Firefox. However, so far I’ve put up with it because I like what it’s doing. The other quibble I have is that I keep wanting more integration. One notable hole is Last.fm integration, which would be wonderful, but it would also be nice to see my Digg friends in there, and be able to Digg stories.
Overall, I’d suggest that those with the time and curiosity to do so should install Flock and give it a try. It’s fun, and you might just like something.

I was having a discussion with someone recently about web browsing and we eventually came to the con

I was having a discussion with someone recently about web browsing and we eventually came to the conclusion that there was no great web browser available. Which is strange, I think, considering our dependence on the web these days.

Safari

Safari is an interesting little browser. The current stable build in 10.5.2 is anything but, in my opinion. It takes forever for it to render anything– the Apple page especially and it crashes frequently. The last time it crashed (before I removed it from my dock entirely) was incredible. It crashed, automatically restarted, and then crashed on restart upon which it informed me that it needed to “reset” itself, whatever that means.

On the plus side, Safari has limited support of add-on’s through the much debated “Input Managers” (Chax, 1Password, etc.) that sort of hide out in your Library folder and make apps like iChat and Safari do useful things that Apple refuses to implement for whatever reason. You can block ads and autofill password forms in Safari, which makes it usable. I consider it an option. However, at the moment, it’s buggy as hell and not something I depend on.

Webkit

Next there is Webkit. Webkit is the framework behind Safari and Apple Mail and you can download nightly builds that run in a Safari-esque shell but utilize the newer framework components. There are a number of upsides to this. Webkit builds run in a Safari shell so they work with InputManagers! The latest builds of Webkit also tend to be more stable than Safari itself (in my experience) and much much faster. I personally feel like the newest Webkit builds are still a step ahead of the latest Firefox 3 betas as far as speed is concerned.

The downside to this is that there aren’t as many plugins for Safari and the like as there are for Firefox and that’s a real downer when you’re someone like me who can’t be bothered to utilize the goodness that is del.icio.us, Technorati, Stumbleupon, etc. without a button or toolbar in my browser.

Firefox 2

Then there’s Firefox 2. There are tons of extensions available for Firefox 2. The ones I can’t live without are: Stumbleupon (Toolbar), NoScript, Adblock Plus, Rikaichan, and of course, 1Password.

The problem with Firefox 2 is that it’s slow. As slow as the current stable Safari build. Perhaps slower. Which is fine until you’ve tried Firefox 3 or Opera (which I’m getting to).

Firefox 3

Not much to say here besides the fact that I’d like to see Firefox 3 Release come out sooner than later. Right now only a smattering of add-ons work with the Firefox 3 beta builds and even among the ones that do work there are a lot of bugs in them.

Firefox 3 is fast. Faster than Safari and Firefox 2, and neck and neck with the nightly builds of Webkit. The only faster browser is…

Opera

Opera’s speed is nothing short of amazing. You can block ads if you’re willing to put in the time to set up your filtering. See, Opera’s flaw is that they’re too pompous to support extensions, which means that all of those things I said I can’t live without above won’t run on Opera. Ultimately, for this reason alone, even though I believe Opera is the best choice on OS X right now, on my machine, Opera sees very little use.

So why is it that all browsers suck?

I’ve just been reading an interesting post on The Weekly Review about OpenID. This is a service that allows you to use just one username and password to sign in to registered websites. (Nearly ten thousand sites are currently supported.)

I just don’t feel comfortable with this kind of service. Having someone else store my passwords, even if they say it is secure, makes me nervous. I would always be worried about someone gaining access to my data or phishing.

However, a single login is very appealing as it is such a timesaver. I use 1Password and it is one of my favourite Mac apps. It stores all my passwords for me - but not on some distant server. All your data is retained in the Keychain app on your Mac. If you want, 1Password will generate strong passwords for you. You just need to remember your single 1Password password. Even easier, it can insert a button into the toolbar of most popular browsers so all you need to do is click it and it will log you in.

It can also store other information securely such as credit card details and serial numbers. The list of useful features goes on - 1Password also supports the iPhone.

I’m not doing it justice here - I suggest you try the free demo. And it only costs $30 to buy.

MacHeist Bundle Time

I’m a bit late on this, but there are still 4 1/2 days left for purchasing this year’s M

I’m a bit late on this, but there are still 4 1/2 days left for purchasing this year’s MacHeist Bundle. As crazy as it sounds, this is your chance to get $428 worth of pretty neat Mac apps for just $49.

The previous MacHeist Bundle sale did pretty darn well, netting in an estimated $800,000. The MacHeist crew expected to sell around 5,000 bundles, but ended up selling nearly 17,000! That’s a miscalculation I’m sure they’re glad they made.

I was recently asked the very reasonable question, “…but are any of the apps useful”. My response? “I sure think so. With the exception of Wingnuts2 (probably a fun time-waster, but a time-waster nonetheless), iStopMotion, CSSEdit, and Speed Download I see personal uses for everything else… Pixelmator alone is worth $59 and gives me a bit more functionality than iPhoto ‘08 offers” (IMHO).

Then there’s the added incentive of knowing that part of your money will be donated to a worthy cause. From the MacHeist folks: “Last year, our members were offered a choice of charities to have 25% of their purchase donated to. This initiative became a spectacular success, with $200,000 raised by the end of the event. This year, we’re hoping to shatter last year’s record numbers, and show how generous the Mac community can be.”

Here are the charities you can choose to either split your donation among or choose specifically from.

This deal may not be for everyone, but my guess is more than a few of you in the Mac community around the world will step up join in. The clock is ticking, and there are only four days left, so make your move quickly.

BTW, the next time you hear someone criticize Macs as being too expensive, please try and remember moments like this.

Hat-tip to my good friend Erik for this.

Hurry before it’s too late! MacHeist 2 is happening right now. MacHeist is a bundle of so

Hurry before it’s too late! MacHeist 2 is happening right now. MacHeist is a bundle of software released together, you get full licenses to all software, and 25% of the proceeds go to a charity of your choice. The software this year include:

1Password

CoverSutra

Cha-Ching

iStopMotion

Awaken

AppZapper

TaskPaper

CSSEdit (locked)

Snapz ProX (locked)

Pixelmator (locked)

Until 5,000 bundles are sold the last three are locked. The total cost of these applications without the bundle would be $343.75 but right now it is $49. You can’t go wrong.

I currently am using a trial version of 1Password and had every intention of purchasing it after the 30day trial period because it is an amazing program. It manages all of your passwords, also it will generate crazy secure passwords that you won’t need to remember because you just have to remember….that’s right….1 Password. It also syncs up with your iPod Touch or iPhone, so you can bring your passwords with you in a locked bookmark that you have to type an access code to see your passwords.

Enough of the side track, go to the website to get the full descriptions of all the software in the bundle.
