Surf has been great these past few weeks. Been shooting quite a bit here in San Clemente at various spots. Picked up a new to me 1d and paired it with my 600mm for the first real test this week. I am amazed at the quality, focus speed, and pretty much everything else with this combo. At times it can be a little too zoomed in, however, still getting use to it, for sometime I’m sure. Planning a trip to hopefully hop over to Oahu this winter and shoot, but who knows at the moment. I’ll continue to post up shots with the beautiful October light and hoping that it lasts in to November. Check out the Flickr account for a few more pics from Lowers and other spots in San Clemente from the past few days.

Generating barcodes, be it 1D or 2D, have never been easier. I will be using the Barbecue open sourc

Generating barcodes, be it 1D or 2D, have never been easier. I will be using the Barbecue open source project hosted on sourceforge to generate a 1D barcode. After the barcode is generated I will decode the barcode by uploading it to a website whose service we shall use. However its also very simple to write a barcode decoder which shall be a topic of discussion later.

How to ….

First of all you need to download the Barbecue . Following are the jars added in my classpath

barbecue-1.5-beta1.jar

jdom.jar

Following is the code to generate a sample barcode

package com.datel.barcode;

import java.io.File;

import net.sourceforge.barbecue.Barcode;
import net.sourceforge.barbecue.BarcodeFactory;
import net.sourceforge.barbecue.BarcodeImageHandler;

public class GenerateBarcode {

	public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {

		Barcode barcode = BarcodeFactory.createCode128("HelloWorld:0505124456");
        File f = new File("c:\\barcode.png");
        BarcodeImageHandler.savePNG(barcode, f);

	}

}

Now you should find a file named barcode.png in you file system in C: drive. It should look like this

Barcode

We shall try to decode this image the easy way by uploading it to a website. Navigate to this website: ZXing This is a website hosted by the ZXing project team who have a java api for decoding barcode images. Upload your image and click Submit Query. You should see this as the output

HelloWorld:0505124456

A few words….

Even the Barbecue encoder is only beta and has been beta since May 2007. Also I really don’t comprehend why in the world these cool guys would make the Barcode class extend from javax.swing.JComponent. This really drives me mad to see such a thing but the BarcodeImageHandler class comes to the rescue. Anyways keep up the good work.

Humble Insight…

After my extensive search on the web I could not find a single open source java barcode encoder worth mentioning. I would be very much happy if any one could mention a good open source barcode encoder. But there were quite a few decoders though. Sadly to mention, if you want to encode data into barcodes on production applications you will have to rely on some commercial products out there. They are very good at what they do and are can very easily be integrated into your application. Many have facilities for resizing/rotating your image and can be very handy at times.

Using Barbecue looks all nice, simple and dandy but when you start getting requirements from your customers saying “Hey I want to put 100 MB of data in a 2D barcode” then things get hard. Although that’s a bit exaggerated, I know cases where my colleagues were asked for all weird kinds of things to be done with barcodes. To them I have only one thing to say… “Technology was made to help mankind and was not made to be abused by mankind”.

There is tremendous potential in this barcode industry and advanced encoding techniques keep coming out.

Bersin…sneezing….sama satu kategori! Yeah aku dilanda selsema, abes tisu aku gune wat lap. Badan tak panas. Tapi menjelang petang, tekak aku ada rasa kurang selesa. Janganlah demam pulawk! Aku pun telan ubat. Dalam setahun banyak kali kene g clinic, demam selsema punyer pasal. Cuaca sekarang pun extreme. Kalo sejuk, hujan memanjang. Panas kering angin pun takde. Teringat aku bait lagu Ebiet G Ade nih, Mungkin alam bosan bersahabat dengan kita, coba kita bertanya pada rumput yang bergoyang

Attended a medical check up as intructed by my company. Nervous gak tengok jarum aunty nurse tu, tapi melihat kerut wajah, aku rasa memang banyak dah pengalaman aunty dalam ‘mencucuk jarum’ ke lengan patients. Dier siap tanya ” Takut darah tak” aku cakap tak, “….tapi kalo banyak leh rebah…” dengan Bismillah dier masukkan mata jarum menembusi kulit, rasa cam semut gigit hoho. Dalam 10 bulan lepas aku check up jugak kat clinic kat Kuala Lumpur, ni untuk masuk keje. Nurse tu wat keje kasar, maybe baru lagi kot. Dua hari kesan cucuk tuh bengkak membiru. Check telinge aku pun okeh, lege aku, manela tau mild hearing loss ke. Dah name keje tempat bising memang ade risiko camtuh. Syukur semua ok!

Sebelum medical check up tadi, Pijam (osmet aku) cakap aritu ade game East Coast Region kat Kelab Desa Rantau Petronas (KDRP) . Aku pun galas camera, bawak g clinic. Doctor pelik napela aku bawak bag, aku sengih cam kerang wangi ahahaha! Sejam camtu selesai, aku menapak masuk ke KDRP. Canggung siot aku, jadi jakun jap explore location. Gamba budak kat atas nih, aku capture spontan, walaupun kaki tak masuk frame takpe bagi aku. Expressions dier ngn kakak dier main keja-keja tuh. Cukup innocence, jujur dalam meluahkan perasaan. Ikram, 5 tahun, bersekolah di Tadika kat Paka. Pendek ringkas padat jawapan dia kat aku bila aku cuba berborak dengannya.

First thing’s first
Canon or Nikon?
Having used both I can tell you that my preference (easily

First thing’s first

Canon or Nikon?

Having used both I can tell you that my preference (easily) is Nikon. As well as being half the price of almost all their Canon counterparts, I’ve also found them to perform better in almost all aspects. Even if the Canon’s were significantly better, their price still just does not justify what you actually get.

Nikon have gone from strength to strength in recent years and the latest range of cameras (D80, D300, D3) is seriously hard to beat.

So let’s take a closer look.

Nikon D80

This is by no means at all a beginner’s camera or an amateur camera in terms of what it’s capable of, however it is most suited to the photography enthusiast who is just learning and getting into it.

The D80 is the oldest of the 3 models that we’ll examine today but it still boasts 10.2MP, 3FPS, and 11 Point AF. It doesn’t have any advanced features like sensor cleaning or (good) noise reduction, but its a really really good all round package.

The Canon equivalent is the 400D, which is regarded by most to be significantly inferior to theD80, which operates far more smoothly and is far easier to operate straight out of the box, as well as for advanced shots.

Nikon D300

This is a ’semi-pro’ camera, and generally the highest spec camera that you will find people using who aren’t professional photographers. The camera has almost all the advanced features of its older brother the D3, but its packed into a smaller package and isn’t quite as refined. For the price tag its the absolute best camera in its class.

Not even a year old, this bad boy boasts some of the most amazing features to ever come out of Nikon, including 12.3MP, 8FPS, and 51 Point AF. It also has full sensor cleaning, and excellent noise reduction, along with a whole host of rave reviews all over the internet.

The Canon equivalent would be the new(ish) 40D which although very good in its own regard, doesn’t really come anywhere close to the D300 in terms of features.

Nikon D3

Well, the chances are that if you’re reading this blog then you’re not planning on buying a D3 - because the D3 is the Nikon flagship pro-model, and the Pro’s don’t read miniscule little publications like this one, they read the magazines for the countless ‘camera of the year’ awards that this body has won. At over £2,800 in price just for the body you’d really need to make a living of photography to be able to justify the cost of owning.

The features of the D3 are incredible, the most notable of which is its full-frame sensor. Which is to say that the digital sensor which captures the images is the same size as a traditional frame on a 35mm strip of film - providing (as you might have guessed) far far higher image quality. Then obviously there’s the addition of 12.1MP, 9FPS, and 51 Point AF.

The Canon equivalent.. well.. there isn’t one really - the closes equivalent (The Canon Flagship model) would be the 1D MKIII, which is sadly, about twice the price and has notoriously buggy AF.

Conclusion

If you’re a beginner, grab the D80. If you’ve been photographing for a while then definitely grab the D300, which is my personal choice of the 3, and on the off chance that you’re a professional, or just rich enough to own half of the available west sussex land for sale then grab the GOD of a camera that is the D3.

To ease into the writing part of the blog, I’ll start on a subject I can talk endlessly about… photo gear. First up, the hub of a camera system: the body.

I picked up a Canon 1D Mark III a few months ago. For the most part it is a great camera. But what a rap it has taken for its focus problems. I can’t decide if it is this negative reputation that has affected the way I see my pictures or if there really were more soft images. But it did seem that I was getting more soft images than with my 1D Mark II. After Richard and Regina’s wedding, I sent the camera back for the “fix” and it seems to be better… but it is probably all in my head.

The camera otherwise is more than I could have asked for. It is responds faster, colors/WB are more accurate out of camera and can shoot over 1000 frames between charges. The live view function is actually helpful believe it or not… great for tripod and product shots (for eBay of course). I do have to say… my favorite feature over the 1D Mark II is that it is much LIGHTER! I am getting old. As I get over the stigma, I think I will grow to love this body more and more.

Well… is it sharp?

By: Pholus Aquula Xephyr

I’ll start the ball rolling…. Someone else can add on about the 5th and higher dimensions, as well as alternate or parallel ones, and even vibrations… all very cool stuff, but this is the basics….

What are Dimensions?

Some may get annoyed at my explanation, but I am only being VERY, VERY basic…

First, if you are familiar with physics/mathematics…simple physics, that explain our “physical” world…the world in which “human beings” live, is Three Dimensional… we have width (latitude), Length (longitude) and Height (altitude) …. We live and experience a world of shapes, space, scents, colors, textures, sounds, etc. We relate to things in this way.

The word “Dimension” is a Latin word meaning “measured out”. In other words, “space.” A dimension is a measure of space and the dimension is how it relates
to that space.

Our bodies are 3D, our landscape is 3D, our food is 3D, etc. Everything takes up space and shape. This is living in physicality. We understand and relate to things we can feel, see, smell, hear and taste (utilizing our 5 basic senses). We don’t just see Squares, we also see CUBES, Circles can become Spheres, Triangles, Pyramids, etc. That is living in
3D.

So you might say, what is 2D or 1D? We are beyond or above or higher than those dimensions, but basically, consider a “point”, it has no height, no length or width… it is 0D (Zero Dimensions), it doesn’t move, it is it’s totality of existence. Some refer to “God” or “The Source” as the “Zero Point” meaning the point where all Reality Begins or the Source of Everything.

Now consider a “line”. It has length, but that is basically all. That is 1D. It’s interaction with it’s reality is related to the amount of space it takes up.

Now consider a shape like a “square, circle, triangle, etc.” These all have width and length, but no height or depth. If a square or circle was alive and could sense and move it could only perceive you in same way it relates to it’s own reality, as a 2D object. It
could perceive you as having length and width but not as having height/depth… You could stand above the square and it would only relate to the plane of your body, i.e. your foot, as a line blocking it’s path…
the square could go around your foot as though it were an odd shaped 2D object having length and width (longitude & latitude), but it could not move UP (altitude) your body as that would be a NEW dimensional experience for the square. The Square
would need to first realize there WAS an UP dimension before it could learn to relate to it and possibly move UP.

So understanding that we generally relate to our world in 3D we are typically wrapped up in what we perceive from that perspective, and like the “point” who is trapped in the totality of it non dimensional experience or the “square” who limits itself to only
what it thinks it really THERE we often see things as they are presented to us and accept it as “all there is.”

What is 4D? Physicists add “Time” to the 3rd Dimension. So now we have Length, Width, Height (or Depth) and Time. This dimension is also called “Space-Time.”

In general we all do fluctuate in and out of Space-Time, but typically we do not perceive TIME, because time is relative to our physicality. In other words, we perceive time via our 3 dimensional faculties. We see it as linear, or ever moving
forward and with our 3D selves trapped in that movement unable to alter it’s course. We “remember” the past or “contemplate” the future, but we cannot move our 3D selves into the past or the future. We are always in the present no matter what moment of time we think about… we are ALWAYS here, now. The sad thing is, most people don’t truly comprehend that simple fact…. They spend much of their waking life worrying about what MIGHT happen in the future or what horrible things happened in the past, or retreating from things they can’t face by living in their
memories. Our minds ARE capable of perceiving TIME.
Proper control of our thought processes help us to better focus… meditation, relaxation, and understanding all help us to put things in their proper perspectives. The relativity of time is a difficult concept.

Think of this… If you had a twin who was born only seconds after or before you were, you’d generally think of your twin as being the same age (time-wise) as you are, but if you are one side of the Earth and your twin traveled to the other side to live, your twin would then be 1 Day older or younger than you are… Sure you started out as being the same age, but now you are a day different. If your twin travels
back to your side of the planet you are the same age again.

Now imagine if your twin was to travel to the nearest <!-- D(["mb","<br\>
solar system outside of ours; Proxima Centauri, which<br\>
is about four light-years away.
