Here’s an old Pearl Jam joke, which they themselves come up with ….. Question: “How many members of Pearl Jam does it take to change a light bulb?” Answer: “Change?! Change? We’re not gonna change for anyone! Do you hear me? Not for anyone.” Nirvana may have changed the music world in the early 90’s but it was Pearl Jam who kept it running and all the time keeping the faith. I like this quote from Stephen Thomas Erlewine is the best, it sums PJ up to a T …. “The members of Pearl Jam have earned a reputation for taking themselves too seriously, fighting huge corporations, and refusing in general to play by the rock-and-roll handbook. And while they’ve tried to change their angst-ridden image, that’s a daunting task when you carry the burden of being branded the last great spokesmen of your generation.” Yep, thats the price of rocking in a free world.

The Band

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the ’90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron on drums. Thanks to future Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, the demo found its way to a 25-year-old San Diego surfer named Eddie Vedder, who overdubbed vocals and original lyrics and was subsequently invited to join the band (then christened Mookie Blaylock after the NBA player). Dave Krusen was hired as the full-time drummer shortly thereafter, completing the original lineup. Renaming themselves Pearl Jam, the band recorded their debut album, Ten, in the beginning of 1991, although it wasn’t released until August; in the meantime, the majority of the band appeared on the Andrew Wood tribute project Temple of the Dog. Ten didn’t begin selling in significant numbers until early 1992, after Nirvana made mainstream rock radio receptive to alternative rock acts. Soon, Pearl Jam outsold Nirvana, which wasn’t surprising — Pearl Jam fused the riff-heavy stadium rock of the ’70s with the grit and anger of ’80s post-punk, without ever neglecting hooks and choruses; “Jeremy,” “Evenflow,” and “Alive” fit perfectly onto album rock radio stations looking for new blood. ~ [Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide]

In retrospect, it’s easy to see why Pearl Jam clicked with a mass audience — they weren’t as metallic as Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, and of Seattle’s Big Four, their sound owed the greatest debt to classic rock.
On Ten, Pearl Jam – descended from the late, lamented Mother Love Bone – hurtles into the mystic at warp speed. Singer-lyricist Eddie Vedder sometimes lets his words get way ahead of his good intentions: “I don’t question/Our existence/I just question/Our modern needs” (”Garden”). Focus instead on his voice – a ragged, enraged mongrel blend of Robert Plant and James Hetfield – and the Pearls’ surprising, and refreshing, melodic restraint. They wring a lot of drama out of a few declarative power chords swimming in echo. Temple of the Dog is not a band but a one-off project recorded in memory of Love Bone vocalist and OD victim Andrew Wood, with members of both Soundgarden and the future Pearl Jam exorcising their grief with the amps at full crank. If for nothing else, buy it for the eleven-minute requiem “Reach Down,” a fiercesome death-rattle blues that may some day come to be regarded as Seattle’s own “In My Time of Dying.” ~ [RS:DAVID FRICKE 1991]

SUNSET ON HURON

by Paul Bishop — June 30, 1992

Ripples on the water
Golden waves of sunset
Sun sinking in pink clouds
This is where my heart’s set
To sail on into unending day
Until the light passes away

A seagull flies along
Above the gentle surf
Its cry melancholy
As it seeks for its berth
Oh, to be a bird with wings to fly
Into the dreamy sunset sky

I walk along the shore
To find the trail to home
Gazing on the sunset
Where pastel clouds do roam
Perhaps tomorrow I’ll find a way
Into the sun to fly away

by Paul Bishop — October 19, 1992

He looked up into the sky
As he lay upon the ground
Staring at the moon and stars
Constellations all around
Glowing brightly in the night
In the air around his head
His own world of stick-on stars
Filled the space above his bed

His cosmos wasn’t real he knew
But he liked to pretend a lot
Flying around his solar system
In the dream-starship he’d bought
Whenever he came warping about
All the mean aliens ran
But he was the one speeding away
When the dark shadows began

“Be very quiet,” came a soft voice
“This won’t hurt at all,” it said
“This is how to show you love me.”
A hand moved under sheets of the bed
What happened next is perverse to tell
A shadow blotted out the stars
Darkness passed over his own little world
And left him with deep emotional scars

by Paul Bishop — January 21, 1992

The wind swirls snowflakes outside my house
A maddening dance of winter’s fury
Obliterating everything under a pristine white mantle
And I just stand at the window and stare

There is only a thin layer of transparent glass between me and the storm
I love to watch the dizzying display as the snowflakes rush by borne on the wind
That there are million of snowflakes, all different is a fact that amazes me
I love to dip my hand into a fresh mound of snow and try to examine the flakes before they melt into nothingness

Ah! But I can’t do that today
The storm rages across the yard
Which for the moment has become my world
My own world, encased in walls of opaque white

My world, separated totally from your world, fifteen hundred kilometres away
So far away
Where are you in this white whirling?
Have I lost you?

Are you thinking of me, as I think of you?
I am here with millions of flakes
How can you feel alone when there are millions of things around you to see and feel?
It’s easy

You’re not here to enjoy them with me

THE SEARCHING HEART

by Paul Bishop — February 25, 1992

I heard the wind calling my name
So I left home to find fortune and fame
And I went far into the west
Trying to buy my soul some rest

I looked above and saw a star fall
Suddenly I felt no peace at all
So to the north I followed the trail
Searching for my star to no avail

I felt the sun beat upon my face
And realized this is no kind place
Far in the south the land I trod
But found no warmth in the passing sod

I saw the moon rise over the hill
The night was dark, the wind was chill
So cold was I that I returned east
There a home would be found at least

But o’er the hill the summons was heard
And again my aching heart was stirred
I searched my home for the sounding call
But the voice could not be found at all

I still heard it like a tinkling bell
No matter on mountain or in hidden dell
Then suddenly a voice made me start
“Do you not know? I am thine heart.”

“Why hast thou neglected me
In the hopes of being free?
For though we traveled far, with clouds above
During all that time I have not known love.”

“Why hast thou always strayed
And never saw foundation laid?
Always moving on and so
Anything endearing I must let go.”

“Yet thou hast ignored my oft-heard pleas
And travelled across the hills and leas
Though in no one place would you stay
For want of love, I now waste away.”

AK-SEN: Democrat Mark Begich now leads convicted felon Ted Stevens by 1,022 votes. Alaska’s election division has said they will most likely finish counting all the outstanding votes tomorrow; at this point, it’s hard to see how Stevens can pull this one out. It looks like Mark Begich will be heading to Washington in January.

MN-SEN: Democrat Al Franken’s camp is trying to determine why a slew of absentee ballots were rejected from; until that’s decided, they’re pushing the state not to certify the vote, which is set to happen on Wednesday. Marc Elias–lead recount attorney for the Franken campaign–said that, until the absentee ballot situation is resolved, “I don’t think that they have a vote count to certify.”

Franken is also huddling with the Senate Democratic leadership tomorrow.

GA-SEN: While former Senator Zell Miller is campaigning for incumbent Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss, former President Bill Clinton–who turned Georgia blue in 1992–will be campaigning for Democrat Jim Martin.

Martin also has an ad out hitting Chambliss for his role in the failing economy:

UPDATE: Some good news about Minnesota:

Professor Michael C. Herron of Dartmouth College, has put together a new study of the voting patterns in Minnesota, in the process determining that the majority of voters who cast unrecorded ballots in the Senate race were likely Franken supporters.

“If someone put a gun to my head and said, ‘You have to bet,’ I would bet Franken,” Herron said, when reached by phone. “It won’t be a wipe-out. Two hundred votes is effectively tied. We just know that, in this case, Democrats tend to [screw up their ballots] more often [than Republicans].” In Minnesota, the “intent” of the voter is considered during recounts.

[...]

In other words, there are probably somewhere between 8,000 and 10,000 Minnesota voters who had clear problems filling out a ballot and likely voted in the Senate race. Many of these individuals, moreover, hailed from Democratic communities.

“Ultimately, the anticipated recount may clarify the relative proportions of intentional versus unintentional residual voters,” writes Herron. “At present, though, the data available suggest that the recount will uncover many of the former and that, of the latter, a majority will likely prove to be supportive of Franken.”

Some women kiss a lot of frogs before they find a prince. Lady Di started off kissing a prince and — well, we all know what happened to that fairytale. Chuck and Di’s separation completed the 1992 hat trick for the marriages of three children of Queen Elizabeth II: Chuck, Andy and Anne. Her fourth child, Edward, is pursuing a career in the theater.

Bad news for royals is good news for royalties, however, since American newspapers and magazines are eager to hire freelance writers (like Tim) to dish the latest dirt. And he is eager for assignments that require him to go to the local pub and prod his drinking mates for pithy Joe Six-Pints reaction quotes: “What did she ever want with that pillock with big ears? Bloody polo player…It all comes down to the bedroom, and he’s the type to keep his cufflinks on…”

Other separations are going on, too — some of them affecting the Harper-Bobrowitz household a little more directly. Jonathan, having achieved what he regards as the ultimate age of 4, is no longer going to nursery school. Instead he is in the pre-school at New End, the Hampstead neighborhood state school where Lizzie is in the equivalent of second grade. He still sleeps with toy cars (metal) under his pillow at night. He just got over an ear ache that required him to borrow Tim’s stocking cap when he went outside; now he says Tim can have it back “next summer, maybe.”

Lizzie was separated from her two front teeth in mid-October (enclosed photo was selected because it shows the gap to best advantage). You might remember that the loss of her first milk tooth last year was regarded as a major step toward mutant teenagehood. This time she simply made a note to include “two front teeth” on her shopping — sorry, WISH list for Santa. Shortly after the teeth fell out, Lizzie headed full-speed down a hill on her two-wheeler, lost her balance and made a one-point landing — on her face. Left with bloody nose, scratched and swollen lips, egg-sized bump on the forehead, shiners under each eye and no front teeth, she didn’t need a mask for Halloween.

One separation that didn’t occur was us from England, obviously. During the summer, Nancy and Reuters agreed that 1993 is absolutely, positively the last year we’ll be here. This time we really mean it. Really. Sometime during the second half of 1993 we’ll leave. But we don’t know when, or where we’ll end up. We stayed away from the U.S. this year, not because we were trying to avoid the politicking, but because we wanted to concentrate on this side of the Atlantic for our last year here. So we went to Egypt for two weeks with the kids and all four grandparents. It worked out well (Cairo, Luxor, Red Sea) because the kids and grandfolks were all on roughly the same schedule for getting up, eating, going to bed, complaining, etc.

And that’s it from London as we start our ninth (!) year in England.

Happy Hols from Tim, Nancy, Lizzie and Jonathan

(iskry.pl)

Ta legalizacja nastąpiła drogą postępującego kompromisu z komunistami (rozpoczętego Magdalenką i okrągłym stołem). I kompletne zafałszowanie współczesnej historii.

Porco Rosso is a unique film in the canon of genius animator Hayao Miyazaki. The historical and geographical context of the movie is specific; there is no fantasy world or alternate universe in which the characters operate. Indeed, most of the story could have occurred in reality and within the context. The only element to the story that stretches our perceptions of reality, ever so slightly, is the titular character.

The story takes place during the 1920s between the two World Wars. The setting is Italy and fascism is rising. Blackshirts are everywhere and the “firm answer” of the fascist regime to the political turmoil in post-war Italy lays the backdrop to the picture. In many respects, Porco Rosso is Miyazaki’s most “adult” picture. It is entrenched with politics and world affairs, generating many of its more obvious plot points from the rejection of fascism.

We meet Porco Rosso, a man with the head of a pig, as he works as a bounty hunter guarding ships in the Adriatic Sea. He frequently combats pirates and defends other ships, yet there is a sense of camaraderie between the pirates and Porco. He is a legend in the area and has earned the respect of mostly everyone he comes into contact with. We are not told specifically how Porco wound up in the condition we find him in, although Miyazaki does include some hints that he became a pig after he left the Italian Air Force.

The film revolves around Porco’s relationship with Gina, a woman who runs Hotel Adriano in the Adriatic Sea, and his rivalry with American pilot Curtis. Curtis is attempting to gain employment with a gang of pirates and decides to directly challenge Porco as a way to boost his profile. When Porco heads to Milan to rebuild his plane, he comes into contact with young Fio and a group of fascists who smell bacon. Luckily, Porco has friends in the Italian Air Force who keep him ahead of the blackshirts and he is able to head back and properly challenge Curtis with a rebuilt plane (courtesy of Fio) and renewed energy.

The animation is typical Miyazaki, brimming with color, quality, and unbelievable detail. Miyazaki’s meticulousness is renowned and Porco Rosso is a marvelous example of this. His attention to detail is impeccable, especially in his presentation of Italy and the historical elements as they fit the context of the piece.

As Miyazaki’s sixth animated picture, this 1992 film demonstrates the director’s growth as an artist. It is often thought that Porco Rosso is his most personal work and that the character of Porco is loosely based on himself. Flight is a common theme in the films of Hayao Miyazaki, with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind featuring airborne armies and the title character’s glider and Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service flying around on her broomstick. There is a sense here that flight represents a form of ultimate freedom, as though Porco only feels safe and, perhaps, human in the skies.

The core of the film for some may well be Porco’s conflict with Curtis. It ends in a bruising fist-fight, the two characters throwing ideological punch after punch at one another. But for me, the core of Porco Rosso lies in Porco’s denunciation of everything that holds him down. He has literally been stripped of his humanity through circumstances we don’t understand. He may turn human again and he may not. For the time being, Porco finds his ultimate autonomy in the skies and in the dismissal of all that anchors him.

He is Bogart-cool, always on the move, always smoking, always prepared.

Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso is a delightfully animated, tenderly constructed, and magnificently frank piece of art. It is certainly his most adult work and little besides the protagonist’s facade seems launched towards younger viewers. A delicate masterpiece, Porco Rosso stands as one of Hayao Miyazaki’s most significant movies and as one of the most enjoyable, affecting animated films of all time.
