Eigentlich sollte Max das elterliche Metzgereigeschäft übernehmen, aber er wurde ständiger Gast bei großen ZDF-Liveshows wie Vergißmeinnicht, Der goldene Schuss, 3 mal 9, Musik ist Trumpf und Der große Preis. Erinnert mich an irgend etwas… also ein klingendes Potpüree aus der Scheinwelt.

An unholy marriage of rock and disco? One unlucky shuffle and you could get Electric Six.

A dazzling blonde singer backed by some lens-shattering blokes? Have Transvision Vamp. Or, at a stretch, Shakatak. Or, if you’ve broken a mirror recently, here’s Generation X.

Now you know how damned lucky we are to have Blondie, and ‘Heart of Glass’. Their place in pop’s firmament was sealed by this record, punk poise not misplaced but overshadowed by complete understanding of the mechanics of disco. It’s atypical, of course, and yet fits seamlessly between ‘Hanging On The Telephone’ and ‘Sunday Girl’ in the rich run of sterling singles Blondie dashed off in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. They showed a taste for adventure rarely matched, and could even consider their gorgeous singer a bonus, not an essential selling point – let’s not pretend she didn’t help, mind you. Still, looks aside, Debbie Harry’s presence (dear) is a boon on ‘Heart of Glass’ for her casual juggling of comforting coos and acid dismissals. The velvet glove.

For all its diverse ingredients, this is a dance record – and we danced en masse. Junior 2 shook her shoulders in the style patented by both mum and big sister, while Junior herself watched with widening eyes as the groove burst out of the click-track intro. It’s a pleasure to see pop music’s greats hitting the spot; one of the reasons we’re here.

Riding high on love’s true bluish light:

Extra, extra: in a victory for ambition over commonsense, I plan for us to tackle 1994 now, hoping to finish it in time for the feverishly anticipated 2008 Top 20 - which in turn I have mad ideas of finishing on or around Christmas Eve. Who’s with us?

It’s well-established that Junior’s a bit of a dancer, shaking down to everything from The Jam to Prince to Girls Aloud and all the way round to entire LCD Soundsystem albums – so why does Jacko draw a blank? Does she find it difficult to listen with complete abandon in light of all the allegations against him this past decade or so? Can any of us listen now without the music passing through the prism of approbation?

In this case, Junior’s annoyed that her nursery rhyme CD isn’t playing; Dad’s “Just one song and then I’ll put it on” is cutting no ice. As for the rest of us, I think it’d be a pity if we couldn’t enjoy the music at its base, uncomplicated level, but it’s tricky to forget the freak the dazzling young Michael would become.

It’s a pity because this is easily one of the most exciting records ever made. Inspired, presumably, by Star Wars, Michael lets rip with dog-whistle nonsense about “the Force” over planet-circling strings and bombastic brass to create a vertiginous dancefloor ride that, by rights, will have you blowing chunks. That’s a good thing, incidentally. As an example of what the adolescent Jacko and mighty producer Quincy Jones could achieve together, it’s a thrilling signpost to Off The Wall and, er, Thriller; a line in the sand, leaving disco over there and, over here, hyper-tooled ‘80s gold-bar soul.

For my debut post on this blog I thought I’d post THE iconic piece of political advertising.  Produced by Saatchi&Saatchi and credited to Tim (now Lord) Bell.  The simplicity with which the poster attributed the blame of high levels of unemployment to the Labour government of the time is astounding.  It worked  because it was not overly aggressive and yet delivered a devastating blow on the record of the government.  Too many ‘attack’ adverts in their aggression alienate the electorate, rather than influence them.

“Trata-se do 4×1 do Brasileirão de 1979. Comandado por Telê Santana, um grupo de garotos como o goleiro Gilmar, os volantes Pires e Mococa (que a imprensa paulista comparava a Falcão), Jorginho e Carlos Alberto Seixas, e cuja maior estrela era Jorge Mendonça, me deu uma das grandes alegrias no futebol.

A imprensa paulista, sempre revoltada com os já costumeiros desmandos da então CBD, estava indignada pelo fato do jogo ser no Rio. Com razão.E o Flamengo tinha um timaço. Carpegiani, Júnior, Adílio, Tita, e, claro, ele: Zico. O time do presidente Marcio Braga, fanfarrão que anunciara na véspera que já havia comprado as passagens para Porto Alegre, era comandado pelo técnico da seleção, Cláudio Coutinho. Parecia que o Palmeiras não daria nem para o começo.Pois chegou o dia 9 de dezembro de 1979.

A Globo anunciava durante todo o domingo a transmissão do grande jogo.
E só faltava tocar o hino do Flamengo nas chamadas. Era de dar medo.

Mas o time de Telê não se intimidou diante de um Maracanã com mais de 112 mil pagantes, e foi logo abrindo o placar aos 12 minutos, com Jorge Mendonça. No segundo tempo, lá pelos 10 minutos, o juiz apitou um pênalti para o Flamengo. Roubado. E quem bateu foi Zico, 1×1. O empate ainda classificava o Palmeiras, mas a virada parecia iminente, com aquele estádio inflamado em vermelho e preto. O Palmeiras calou de vez o Maracanã. Numa tarde inspiradíssima de Baroninho, aos 25, Carlos Alberto Seixas fez 2×1.Dez minutos depois, Pedrinho fez o terceiro. E a um minuto do fim, o meia Zé Mário fechou o placar, sacolada, 4×1.Coutinho ainda colocou em campo o atacante baiano Beijoca, só para dar uma porrada no Baroninho.

Detalhe: O Flamengo era tricampeão carioca, tinha o time que conquistou depois o Brasileiro de 80, 82 e 83 e a Libertadores/Mundial de 81. Maracanã com 120 mil pessoas. O Inter era o semifinalista já classificado. O Presidente do Flamengo, Márcio Braga, disse na semana do jogo que já tinha as passagens para Porto Alegre compradas e o hotel na capital gaúcha já reservado.

Mas se esqueceu que AQUI É PALMEIRAS.”

Charisma/Magnifique - Magnifique

En riktig discopärla som kan anses vara ett av embryona till det som kom att bli Hi-NRG genrén. Den tolvan jag har är släppt under artistnamnet Charisma men låten släpptes även under artistnamnet Magnifique ifall någon tycker det verkar vara lite förvirrat.

Det jag tycker om med den här låten är att den är så grymt fet i ljudet för att vara från 1979. Det har alltför ofta hänt att man plockat fram nån gammal favvistolva från den tiden och insett att den inte alls låter lika ballt nu som den gjorde då. En av anledningarna till detta fenomen är att vi vant oss vid mer basrika produktioner under de senaste 25 åren så det som kanske var maffigt på sin tid behöver nödvändigtvis inte vara det idag.

Sen kan jag tycka att det gått lite över styr med en del av de nutida dansgolvsproduktioner som släpps, där känns det ibland som att man bara lagt ner ett enormt jobb på att få till ett fett basljud och sen skitit i resten.

(1910-1971) Escritor y sociólogo, había sido uno de los fundadores del Partido Nacionalcampesino en 1937. Entre 1948 y 1956 participó en los distintos Gobiernos húngaros. En octubre de 1956, como representante de su partido, reestructurado en ese momento, entró en el Gobierno de Imre Nagy en calidad de Ministro de Estado. Erdei formó parte de la comisión encargada de negociar la salida de los soviéticos de Hungría. Al igual que los demás miembros de la comisión, fue detenido por la KGB el 4 de noviembre en Tököl pero, a diferencia de sus compañeros de cautiverio –el general Maléter entre ellos-, fue puesto en libertad a las pocas semanas. Después de la derrota de la insurrección del otoño de 1956 ocupó diveros cargos públicos en el nuevo régimen socialista de Kádár: entre 1957 y 1971 fue designado secretario general y presidente de la Academia Húngara de las Ciencias; de 1964 a 1970 fue también secretario general del Frente Patriótico Popular, cargo que compaginó con el de miembro de la Presidencia de la República Popular de Hungría hasta su muerte en 1971.

(1911-1979) Politólogo y sociólogo de gran prestigio en Hungría, entre 1946 y 1950 había impartido clases en la Universidad de Szeged. Fue miembro del Partido Nacionalcampesino; como Ministro del último Gobierno de Nagy fue condenado en 1958 a cadena perpetua y quedó en libertad cinco años más tarde. A partir de ese momento se dedicó a su labor universitaria y publicó numerosas obras de Ciencia Política, Sociología e Historia.

One of my former fellow interns at EYE WEEKLY wrote a fantastic review of one of the two Smashing Pumpkins shows at Massey Hall last week. It’s a fantastically written review from a guy who genuinely loves the band, but who is able to stay objective enough to call a spade a spade (or at least a shitty new song a shitty new song). I wasn’t at the show, so I really have no business commenting on the current state of the band, but I did see Smashing Pumpkins twice in their former incarnation - once on the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tour, and then again on their Canadian “farewell tour” headlining Our Lady Peace’s Summersault Festival in 2000. That first show was quite good, but the “farewell gig” was pure self-inddulgence; 15 song set with 11 selections off of the tepid Machina/The Machines of God. The only “hits” they played were obligatory rips through “Cherub Rock” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” and M.O.R. version of “1979.” Now I’m all for presenting a broad range of selections at a show, but I really think a “farewell tour” is not the place to be shilling your crappy new album.

An interesting read about the Pumpkins is Jim DeRogatis‘ review of their (supposedly) final show ever at Chicago’s Metro in December of 2000. Banded from attending due to a long running feud with Corgan, DeRo stood outside the venue and reviewed what he could hear from outside. Now that’s chutzpa. I couldn’t find it online, but it’s in DeRo’s book Milk It.

A long forgotten favourite: Smashing Pumpkins - Rocket

Quite the historic day today, and everybody around the world seems to be celebrating save for a handful of red patches scattered about the central North American continent.  Apart from trying to editorialize on the significance or pride that many have associated with this special occasion, which many professional reporters, authors, teachers and school children will surely be doing this week, and while not trying to diminish those grand aspects of the election outcome, I want to take this time and space to direct your attention to what has to be the most overlooked campaign-song-that-should-have-been of any modern day election.

Motörhead is not a band most immediately think of when they think America (because they’re British), democracy (because majorities decide to turn it off), or politics (as the handlebar mustache was out of style in 1873), but the titular track from their 1979 album Bomber would have done just the trick for the campaign this year.

I had the idea in mind to make a quality video with the song and put it up online, but time just has not permit.  Fortunately someone else has already created an adequate video that conveys the same point.  Maybe with enough support this could usher in the beginning of an era for White House theme songs…

Hace un par de semanas hablamos de la conocida banda griega Aphrodite’s Child. Comentamos que esta agrupación (que tuvo, en realidad, una vida muy breve) de rock progresivo había contado entre sus miembros con dos grandes artistas, conocidos mundialmente en la actualidad: Vangelis Papathanassiou y Demis Roussos. Dediquemos algo de atención a ellos…

Concentrémonos el día de hoy en Vangelis (ya habrá espacio para Roussos). No creo que sea necesario dar demasiados detalles acerca de su obra. Todavía siendo parte de AC, este pionero del género New Age comenzó a invertir su talento para la creación de su propia música y el desarrollo de bandas sonoras, apartado en el que ha sobresalido especialmente desde entonces. De entre sus principales (y más famosos) trabajos podemos mencionar la música compuesta para filmes como 1492, Blade Runner (una de las más gustadas… a mí no tanto, pero sí a una gran parte del público ), Missing y, por supuesto, Chariots of Fire. Este último debe de ser su trabajo más célebre, sobre todo el tema principal de la película. De hecho, llegó –logro único para Vangelis- hasta el primer lugar de las 100 mejores canciones de la revista Billboard en mayo de 1982.

En 1979, Vangelis tuvo a su cargo la musicalización de una serie de documentales producidos por una televisora francesa: L Opéra Sauvage. El talentoso compositor griego produjo un grupo de melodías para acompañar a esta serie, que “exploraba la relación entre el hombre, la música y los animales de todo el mundo”. El material resultante tomó la forma de disco, distribuyéndose como Opera Sauvage. El público quedó cautivado con la belleza contenida en todas sus piezas (principalmente en L’Enfant) y, prueba de ello, se le considera hoy en día como uno de los mejores y más conocidos álbumes que Papathanassiou ha  grabado en su carrera.

De este gran disco, escuchemos el tema Hymne (melodía que yo, en lo personal, considero como una de las más hermosas que he tenido la suerte de escuchar… ). Aclaro que esta es la versión original, puesto que también existe otra del mismo Vangelis, grabada posteriormente. Esa no es tan buena…
