I was at Barnes and Noble over the weekend and saw a coffee table style book on album covers. I paged through and realized what a lost art that this has become. Now artists will still have some sort of cover on a cd but it is so much smaller than the albums that were sold prior. Thumbing through and you see the Greteful Dead had many great coversand Muse has many as well. My favorite of all is easily Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy from 1975. Who knows what the artist, Alan Aldridge, was thinking with the animal heads, skulls and small village included on the cover. Only Elton John’s wild outfit near a piano make sense. Aldridge also did covers for the Beatles, Rolling Stones and a book of his works is due out next year, The Man with Kaleidoscope Eyes : The Art of Alan Aldridge .

I will be doing about cover art. I will try to do 1 post daily on what is good in my eyes. As always what I see and what you see can be vastly different.

Feroz Khan’s “Dharmatma” was one movie which had a story line based on Afghani background.
This movie was lapped up by its target audience and I am told that this movie became very popular in Afghanistan.

One big attraction of “Dharmatma” was its hit music, scored by Kalyanji Anandji, and the songs of “Dharmatma” played an important role in the success of this movie.

Here is the song that was most popular in “Dharmatma” and that can be said to have helped a great deal in making this movie a success, thus encouraging Feroz Khan to come up with similar movies with Kalyanji Anandji’s music in future too, viz “Qurbani”, “Jaanbaaz” etc.

Some kind soul unearthed this speech given by Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Con

Some kind soul unearthed this speech given by Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Convention on March 1, 1975. It still applies today.

The future President said:

Since our last meeting we have been through a disastrous election. It is easy for us to be discouraged, as pundits hail that election as a repudiation of our philosophy and even as a mandate of some kind or other. But the significance of the election was not registered by those who voted, but by those who stayed home. If there was anything like a mandate it will be found among almost two-thirds of the citizens who refused to participate.

Bitter as it is to accept the results of the November election, we should have reason for some optimism. For many years now we have preached “the gospel,” in opposition to the philosophy of so-called liberalism which was, in truth, a call to collectivism.

Now, it is possible we have been persuasive to a greater degree than we had ever realized. Few, if any, Democratic party candidates in the last election ran as liberals. Listening to them I had the eerie feeling we were hearing reruns of Goldwater speeches. I even thought I heard a few of my own.

Bureaucracy was assailed and fiscal responsibility hailed. Even George McGovern donned sackcloth and ashes and did penance for the good people of South Dakota.

But let’s not be so naive as to think we are witnessing a mass conversion to the principles of conservatism. Once sworn into office, the victors reverted to type. In their view, apparently, the ends justified the means.

The “Young Turks” had campaigned against “evil politicians.” They turned against committee chairmen of their own party, displaying a taste and talent as cutthroat power politicians quite in contrast to their campaign rhetoric and idealism. Still, we must not forget that they molded their campaigning to fit what even they recognized was the mood of the majority. And we must see to it that the people are reminded of this as they now pursue their ideological goals — and pursue them they will.

I know you are aware of the national polls which show that a greater (and increasing) number of Americans — Republicans, Democrats and independents — classify themselves as “conservatives” than ever before. And a poll of rank-and-file union members reveals dissatisfaction with the amount of power their own leaders have assumed, and a resentment of their use of that power for partisan politics. Would it shock you to know that in that poll 68 percent of rank-and-file union members of this country came out endorsing right-to-work legislation?

These polls give cause for some optimism, but at the same time reveal a confusion that exists and the need for a continued effort to “spread the word.”

That is what we need to do. The incoming Obama Administration and the Democrat-controlled Congress are most certainly going to trip up on their own promises and agendas. When (not if but when) that happens, we need to be ready with our message, a message that go right back to our Conservative roots.

More:

Americans are hungry to feel once again a sense of mission and greatness.

I don ‘t know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, “We must broaden the base of our party” — when what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents.

It was a feeling that there was not a sufficient difference now between the parties that kept a majority of the voters away from the polls. When have we ever advocated a closed-door policy? Who has ever been barred from participating?

Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?

Let us show that we stand for fiscal integrity and sound money and above all for an end to deficit spending, with ultimate retirement of the national debt.

Let us also include a permanent limit on the percentage of the people’s earnings government can take without their consent.

Let our banner proclaim a genuine tax reform that will begin by simplifying the income tax so that workers can compute their obligation without having to employ legal help.

And let it provide indexing — adjusting the brackets to the cost of living — so that an increase in salary merely to keep pace with inflation does not move the taxpayer into a surtax bracket. Failure to provide this means an increase in government’s share and would make the worker worse off than he was before he got the raise.

Let our banner proclaim our belief in a free market as the greatest provider for the people. Let us also call for an end to the nit-picking, the harassment and over-regulation of business and industry which restricts expansion and our ability to compete in world markets.

Let us explore ways to ward off socialism, not by increasing government’s coercive power, but by increasing participation by the people in the ownership of our industrial machine.

Our banner must recognize the responsibility of government to protect the law-abiding, holding those who commit misdeeds personally accountable.

And we must make it plain to international adventurers that our love of peace stops short of “peace at any price.”

We will maintain whatever level of strength is necessary to preserve our free way of life.

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

I do not believe I have proposed anything that is contrary to what has been considered Republican principle. It is at the same time the very basis of conservatism. It is time to reassert that principle and raise it to full view. And if there are those who cannot subscribe to these principles, then let them go their way.

President Reagan had it exactly right back in 1975. His words are still relevant to us today.

The Edmund Fitzgerald went down with all hands on November 10, 1975. Having left port with 26,000 tons of taconite the day before, she was crossing Lake Superior to Detroit (and then to winter rest in Cleveland) when she ran into a ferocious winter storm. Superior is known for its squalls, but this one was bad even by “Great Lake” standards, with winds reaching 60mph, heavy snow, and powerful waves more than 30 feet high.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was built for lake crossings, and one would have expected the boat to withstand even this foul weather. What’s more, she had been practicing her craft for nearly 20 years, and had proven herself more than capable. So there’s mystery concerning what actually happened just after 7pm that night. Some have speculated that the cargo hatches didn’t properly close, allowing water (which was constantly washing over the decks) to fill the boat and drag it down. But there was no distress call of any kind…the boat was floating (with some difficulty and both bilge pumps running) and then, 10 minutes later, it was gone.

Others have stated that rogue waves, which were in the area that night and large enough to give off a radar return, acted in concert with the defective hatches. The water slowly dragged the boat down and a massive rogue wave simply washed it below the surface, where it broke in two and sank with no real chance to cry for help. Whatever the exact cause, the boat took twenty-nine men down with her.

Under normal circumstances, I suppose that this sinking, like the more than 300 on Superior before it, would have made the local and regional news for a couple days, and then faded away, leaving only the rusting hulk sitting in 530 feet of water and grieving families on land. But normal circumstances wouldn’t have accounted for Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot, whose 1976 release of the song concerning the wreck was not only relatively accurate historically (as songs go), but was incredibly popular as well. The song still gets airtime more than 30 years later, bringing the intrigue and mystery of Gitche Gumee (as well as a bit of history) to another generation of listeners. But discussing Gordon Lightfoot too much is getting ahead of ourselves just a bit. We’ll talk more about him in very short order.

Tomorow is a very important day.

Of course, whilst most of you know November 11th as Rememberance Day, aka the end of WW1, where we all stand for a minutes silence in the morning, for all the fallen soldiers of our wars, and whilst I do too, I also remember another very significant Australian historical event that happened on November 11th in 1975.

So I just want to get in first to wish you all a Happy 1975!

My favourite and yet saddest day in Australian history. Ok, so I wasn’t alive, hell my parents were still at school! (or, I think my dad was just starting uni…?) But Whitlam is the single coolest pollie we’ve ever had - seriously, he’s like 92 and he’s still cool!

For the ignorant, I’ll give you the VERY quick facts:
(if you want to know more, check out Whitlam Dismissal.com)

- Gough Whitlam was elected Prime Minister of Australia in 1972. The Labor Party had not been in power for like nearly 30 years. It was a pretty big deal.

- It was a very close win, and they didn’t quite hold a majority in the Senate - they needed other parties support.

- So the Senate was being a cow, and Whitlam’s government was unable to pass any bills because the Senate was a big poo and kept blocking them!

- In particular, the government was running out of money cos the Senate kept blocking various bills and the budget (and thus money flow to the government), and really, the Senate isn’t allowed to block the budget - it says so in the Constitution.

- There was a double dissolution (1974) - where both houses (House of Reps and Senate) go up for re-election. Whitlam was re-elected.

And from here on, everything happens in 1975:

- A senator died, a senator retired and a senator was appointed into another position. They were all replaced with people from other parties - despite convention that if you leave mid-term, you are replaced with someone from your party. Opposition held the balance of power.

- More problems, Senate continued to be a frigid bitch, so they had to hold a joint-sitting of the houses where they all sat down together and discussed some bills and passed them.

- So then the Opposition turns into a complete and utter cow and keeps blocking the supply until Whitlam calls an election due to the continued problems in the Senate. Whitlam is all like “excuse me, I am the mighty super Whitlam (because he is) and you are all dirty, corrupt pollies who want my job!” (which they were)

- Then there’s all these constitutional problems (you know, over how we elect government and the powers of the houses and conventions and such) and the whole parliament is messed up and it’s not fair because Whitlam was so what the country needed and it was all ruined!

- And then Governor General Kerr, who is the biggest villain in all of Australian history, goes and acts completely outside his powers and talks to Chief Justice Barwick (who I used to look up to, man!) and decides to take matters into his own hands.

- So Whitlam decides to announce a half-election of the Senate in an attempt to fix the problems once and forall and tells GG Kerr to go organise it.

- Kerr, the backstabber that he is, ignores Prime Minister Whitlam and then goes and DISMISSES (sacks) him from office! Because you know, he thought he could totally just act above the law and convention and ignore the will of Australia (who elected Whitlam) and just sack their saviour, even though this completely contradicts the whole idea of democracy and even though Whitlam was the reason Kerr-devil even got the job as Govenor General and even though it was clearly just the Senate that needed sacking.

And that final point happened on November 11th, 1975. Yes, on Rememberance Day.

And yes, my account is COMPLETELY and utterly bias, but it’s also pretty much factual as well, so whatevs in your face. Whitlam was amazing, and what he managed to get done was amazing and the people knew it, but the stupid snotty Liberal pollies were blind and didn’t know how to appreciate such an amazing political saviour.

In honour of Whitlam, please put some time aside to celebrate him tomorrow, maybe after your minutes silence, and maybe spare a moment or two for GG Kerr-upt, cos…

So here’s to Whitlam, the greatest Prime Minister of Australian history… until I get there.

And please don’t forget your red poppies (or your minutes silence) tomorrow for our fallen soldiers! They did us proud, no matter what you think of our involvement in the various wars of our history. (And let me tell you, I don’t agree to war ever, except maybe against Kerr-upt) I’ve already got my poppy attached to my bag.

The 11th of the 11th is a big day, you better go get a good nights rest.

Sweet dreams of Whitlam and poppies!

xoxo

My dad’s done a lot of driving over the years. He’s been from Alaska to Florida and practically every point in between. This particular photo is from 1975, along Highway 97 in northern BC, not far from the Yukon Border. The frozen lake is Muncho Lake, which appears to be one of the most beautiful in the province, if not the country.

This movie “Aakraman” had Rakesh Roshan and Rekha in lead roles. The movie itself hardly did much of note. But the song “Ye mausam aaya hai” from this movie was such a nice song to listen to It is a duet sung by Kishore and Lata, but it is Kishore Kumar who steals the show.

The picturisation on the lead actors was so so. Both Rakesh Roshan and Rekha were struggling in Bollywood. Rakesh Roshan never achieved anything of note as an actor, and critics used to say about Rekha that she needed to take her career seriously, else she would end up as another Fariyal ( now who was Fariyal ?). Fortunately, Rekha began to take her career seriously and turned over a new leaf starting from “Ghar” in 1978.

Coming to this song, I love this song for the amazing singing of Kishore Kumar. Of course, others in the team- viz Lata, Anand Bakshi, Laxmikant Pyarelal have also contributed significantly in creating this master piece.
