So I’m a green freak, but Berry Hill’s (360 & Westlake Dr in Austin) breakfast taco

So I'm a green freak, but Berry Hill's (360 & Westlake Dr in Austin) breakfast taco packaging is over the top by any standards. They make McDonald's DLT burger box look like a Prius next to this Hummer of a to-go order. One would hope that tacos protected by tin foil and Styrofoam and accompanied by a whole utensil set and chips would be a culinary masterpiece. Sorry, they're not even that good. If you want great breakfast tacos then go to Texas Honey Ham on Bee Cave. Those tacos are AWESOME and appropriately packaged.

[caption id="attachment_100" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="That is a lot of packaging for 6 tacos!"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_101" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Looks like a lot of food, but is it? No."][/caption]

The picture below is not a packaging rant because I'm not sure which way makes sense. Ideally, the plastic box would be reusable. We could buy the appropriately packaged cheese and restore it in the convenient box. The strange part is that the price is identical. I would expect that the more durable package costs something extra. This confirms that retail pricing is not logical - people buy on impression and instinct.

[caption id="attachment_102" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="More questionable packaging? Same amount of cheese, but lots more plastic."][/caption]

Before I get into this commercial, I want to thank X-Entertainment.com for this video. Awesome site and awesome commercial!

Growing up in the 80s, Star Wars was king! My friends and I played with the toys, we use wrapping paper tubes, color them red and green and blue and we were Jedi with our Lightsabers! We’d tie a bath towel around our neck and that was our cape. Cheesy? Hell yea, and damn fun too!

This commercial brings it all back. Unfortunately I did not have any of these glasses, but my best friend did, and when at his house and we asked for a drink, our refreshing beverage was served in one of these glasses. Some how, the drink was much better when drunk out of these glasses.

Yes, the commercial is extremely dated with the wardrobes worn, but that was the 70s. And the hat the lady at the counter is wearing? One main reason I never wanted to work Fast Food.

They had Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca and Han Solo, Darth Vader and C3PO with R2D2. I always got the C3PO glass or Chewbacca, never Luke are Darth. I felt so robbed. I knew that my glass of juice would taste better with Darth Vader or Luke on the side of the glass.

I’m sure you can do a quick search on ebay for these and they are probably worth a mint, but if I ever got my hands on these again, oh hell yea I’d sue them!

John Carpenter. Faye Dunaway. Tommy Lee Jones. What do these three distinct, seemingly unrelated nam

John Carpenter. Faye Dunaway. Tommy Lee Jones. What do these three distinct, seemingly unrelated names have in common? They were all involved in a 1978 movie called Eyes of Laura Mars. I had never heard of this movie before I came across it on HD-Movie Net. I was willing to give it a look when I read the intriguing premise: "an acclaimed photographer begins to see through the eyes of a serial killer."

1978, the year of my birth. And what an over the top, campy movie I share that year with. To expand on the premise a bit, Laura Mars is a fashion photographer who is making headlines with her latest project: photos of models posed in violent, dangerous, and macabre situations, many set up to look like crime scenes. The trouble begins when people involved in the project (her book publisher, her publicist, some of the models, etc.) start turning up dead. Even worse, Ms. Mars is "witnessing" these murders as she goes into sudden trances during which she sees what the killer is seeing. As the movie progresses, she tries to help the police discover the killer before he comes after her or any more of her colleagues.

I was thoroughly entertained by the movie, but there was a lot to laugh at, despite it being a thriller. One reason I enjoy watching movies from the 70s and 80s is to see the cultural differences: the clothes, the hair, the music, and even the language. It's also fun to see recognizable actors in their earlier roles.

Eyes of Laura Mars is a movie that doesn't disappoint when it comes to capturing late 70s culture. In particular, the photo shoot scenes were quite a spectacle, giving the models a chance to strut around to disco tunes (including "Shake Your Booty" and "Boogie Nights") while wearing very skimpy outfits. I'm sure it was all very hip for its time, but now these scenes come across as super cheeseball. Also campy are the scenes in which Laura Mars goes into her trance-like state while witnessing the murders. The music is over the top. The edges of the picture are blurred to create the effect of looking through someone's eyes (as in Being John Malkovich). And Faye Dunaway's panicked screaming could win her a Razzie.

Yes, Faye Dunaway plays the main character, Laura Mars. She is nearly unrecognizable, compared to the older, more plastic Faye Dunaway that I am familiar with. Despite her exaggerated acting, she was well cast as the glamorous, self-assured, artsy photographer. She was beautiful in this movie.

Tommy Lee Jones plays John Neville, the detective assigned to the case. It is interesting to watch his relationship with Laura Mars evolve. I'm sure this movie isn't one of Mr. Jones' proudest moments, but he did an admirable job with the part. And I couldn't get over how young he looked! I always enjoy watching movies that he is in.

There were a few other actors that I recognized. Brad Dourif played a shifty-eyed chauffeur. He has been in many movies, including the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (he was Grima Wormtongue). He is also the voice of Chucky the doll in the Child's Play movies. I also recognized Rene Auberjonois, as Laura's friend and manager Donald. He has done a lot of voice over work, but he may be well known by some for his role as Clayton Endicott on the sitcom Benson, and as Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. And finally, Raul Julia played Laura's ex-husband. I knew Raul Julia best for his role as Gomez Adamms in the early 90s Adamms Family movies. I am sure he starred in much better movies, though, before his untimely death at age 54.

Is this movie worth watching? Sure, if you have extra time on your hands. There are some plot holes, and there's never an explanation for why Laura Mars has visions of the murders. But, it keeps you guessing until the very end. John Carpenter wrote the screenplay, and despite the campy 70s moments, there is also plenty of suspense. I would say it's one of his better screenplays - better than his much more well known Halloween movies.

I'll leave you with this tidbit. Today's suspense movies typically end with some edgy guitar-based song or creepy sounding music. Not Eyes of Laura Mars. As the credits roll, the audience is serenaded by Barbra Streisand, singing "Prisoner." Weird stuff.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Wednesday 20th August):

Birth

1948. Robert Plant (do I really have to say Led Zeppelin?) born in West Bromwich, England.

On Tour

1996. Whitney Houston gets £ 1.3 million for a 90 minute performance at a banquet held by the Sultan Of Brunei.

In Court

1981. Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) appears at Kingston Crown Court to face three charges - possessing cocaine, possessing cannabis and cultivating cannabis. He's found guilty of possessing cocaine and fined £ 200 but acquitted on both of the other charges. The court case follows a police raid on Lynott's house in Kew Road, Richmond in November 1979. It took the jury two and three-quarter hours to reach its verdicts. Speaking to reporters outside the court, Lynott said he was very concerned about the effect the guilty verdict might have on his ability to tour the United States. Lynott had told the court that he'd given up smoking cannabis after the birth of his daughter, Sara, almost three years ago. he also said that he was unaware of possessing any cocaine. The jacket, in which two packets of the drug had been found, had been loaned to a friend and only returned the day before the raid.

In Hospital

1994. Sound engineer Tim Warhurst falls from a lighting gallery during rehearsals for Take That's appearance at London's Docklands Arena. He is flown by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital where he is found to be suffering from head and spinal injuries that may leave him paralysed for life.

1975. Musikladen (ZDF, Germany) 20. 10cc; Bay City Rollers; Johnny Cash; Rubettes; The Cats; Paper Lace; ABBA; Roger Glover; Creedence Clearwater Rivival (Oldie); The Seekers. Here's 10cc with "I'm Not In Love". 4m 06s.

Death

1971. George Jackson, one of the Soledad Brothers, is shot dead by warders when he tries to escape from San Quentin Prison in California. Jackson, 29, had served 11 years for the theft of $ 70 and was currently in jail awaiting trial for the alleged killing of a prison warder during his sentence which was served at Soledad Prison. His court hearing was scheduled for August 23rd but he decided not to wait and escape instead. During the escape attempt, two other prisoners were shot dead by guards. Two prisoners had their throats slit by those escaping and a warder was stabbed to death. The event is captured for posterity by Bob Dylan in the song, "George Jackson".

1970s cooking is all the rage I’m told, so I’m taking you back to 1968 with these classic recipes. This was the golden age of food styling and photography.

Good Housekeeping Cookery Cards (Ebury Press, 7s. 6d.), beautifully photographed in full colour with wipe-clean surfaces, are designed to help you in two ways: to provide you with a repertoire of delicious recipes selected from Good Housekeeping magazine’s famous Creative Cookery series, and also to simplify the complex business of planning perfect menus. For Good Housekeeping Cookery Cards have extra value – each one includes ideas for two more suitable courses to make up a complete three-course meal, linking the recipes to other cards in the series.

There’s never a 70’s porn album lying around when you need one, eh?

How are you today blog fans? I am having one of those days where I don’t like the sight of my own face, and I look like I got dressed in the middle of a heavy beating. I’m not depressed – actually, I feel rather chipper – but I’m having whatever the equivalent of a bad hair day is when it applies to just… everything.

Anyway, the theme of today’s blog is love… down and dirty love.

Get your mind out of the gutter.

Yesterday, I received an email from a friend, who was beating himself up because he had lost the will to say ‘no’ to a second drink – a disaster for him, because he had been so proud and happy that this urge had gone after he left the process.

You know, I am not qualified to talk about much. Chicken sandwiches, which I pretty much live on… yeah, I could school you on that. Pointless, endless blogging? Yep, I can tell you all about that. And the ‘urge’? Oh you better believe I know about that.

Let’s talk about the ‘urge’ shall we?

Follow me here for a moment. The human emotion is a scale – 1 is depression, 5 is equilibrium, and 10 is… lets say, going with the theme, great, mind-blowing sex. Most people spend their lives actively fighting to stay at 5, but they do it by constantly searching for a 7 or 8, and the subsequent failure leaves them at around a 4.

Imagine going across the scale of 1 to 10, crossing at the number 5, is another scale, say… it’s labelled A-J, leaving a scale of human emotion looking like a ’+’ sign. This axis is your spiritual self (for my Hoffman people) or simply your conscious mind for those unfamiliar with this term. For example, you could be a ‘5A’, which would be settled, but unhappy about it/restless, or you could be … ‘1J’, which would be revelling in depression, and fully immersed in your so-called ‘dark side’. In this model, our centre point, and I suppose by definition our point of satisfaction, is ‘5E’.

Open a new word document at work at home, or wherever you are, and put a giant cross, as big as you can fit on the page, smack in the middle of it, and print it out.

Going clockwise, write a ‘10’ at the top axis, a ‘J’ at the right, a ‘1’ at the bottom, and an ‘A’ on the left. This is a (very) simple ‘me chart’.

Like I said - and I stress, this is only my contention, and by no means based in any other facts that I have thought up this morning over tea – most of us exist around the middle – a ‘3’ or ‘4’ when we’re in a bad mood, or our negative patterns are particularly evident, or a ‘6’ when we’re in a good mood.

Most of us are aware at any point that there is room for improvement – like if we’re at work, and we’re feeling a ‘6’, we’re probably saying to ourselves something like ‘I’d be so much happier with half an hour more sleep’ or ‘I shouldn’t have had that last glass of wine’.

Unfortunately, not ALL people exist within these barriers.

When we are fighting against something – depression, a bad mood, negative patterns – we normally try to combat this by actively engaging in behaviour or acts that allow us to feel something more, be it great sex, ‘I’m going to go out on Saturday and get smashed’, or perhaps retail therapy.

Temporarily, this raises our spirits to a ‘7’ or an ‘8’, but this is where the horizontal axis comes into play, as it is my contention that you’re actually sliding to the left, and to a ‘B’ or ‘C’ with it.

And this is probably about where the email yesterday came in. Realisation that you’re a ‘7B’ or an ‘8A’ leads to an immediate drop to around a ‘4’ or worse.

Mentally map what I am about to say. Let’s say my friend starts at a ‘5E’ one day. He goes for a drink, and enjoys the first one, which raises him to a ‘7G’ – a point of happy contentedness. Even though he is out having a good time, he wrestles with the prospect of that second drink, which drops him to a ‘7B’ or ‘7C’, at which point, when he finishes is, he drops to around a ‘4B’ or ‘4C’ as he feels disappointment that he couldn’t say no, or is drinking – which may have been one of his patterns. Now we enter a crucial phase, and this is where all our Hoffman teachings come into play.

At this point, depressives will drop further, possibly to a ‘2’ or ‘3’, before levelling off as the self-disgust (and/or other) fades away.

What I have learned, and what I hope my model will begin to illustrate, is to recognise when I am a, for example, ‘4C’. This self awareness, that I am entering a bad pattern or cycle, or beating myself up, should give some sort of relief, which takes us back to the middle, at which point (hopefully) relief takes us over the to right side (ie, ‘4H’) before returning us to our equilibrium point of ‘5E’.

Again, at this point, there is a danger. And this is where the urge comes in.

In the Hoffman Process, we learned much about vicious circles; how they affect and dictate to us. Imagine our diagram above is a real place, and we’re walking it. If we follow what we have set out above, and we are heading towards the point of ‘5E’, imagine there is a sign before you, with two arrows and directional points. One says ‘give yourself a break’, and is labelled ‘5E’. The other, ‘the urge’, which is labelled ‘7H’. The direction you take is intrinsically linked to your levels of self love.

‘The Urge’ is a killer, make no mistake, but it is not the be-all-and-end-all. At any point, you can allow yourself to say ‘no’, turn around, or just allow yourself to be who you are. This stops the patterns repeating themselves, and, as my friend found out, the prospect of beating yourself up. ‘The Urge’ is most certainly that bit which takes you all the way to the ‘7H’, before dumping you much further down the road.

Corny as it may be, the simple process of ‘5E’, ‘7H’, ‘7C’, ‘4C’, ‘4H’, before returning back to ‘5E’ looks distinctly like heart – and that’s because, in this model, it’s about recognising that which we do, or get ourselves into, and allowing ourselves to exist.

I realise that what I have written for the most part is gibberish, but it is based in something very clear I have noticed, and since this is my blog, I can say what I like! *sticks out tongue* This model, this recording of behaviour, can actually help us identify what sets us off. Instead of crossing a mood on the map, sometimes (and I stress, this is mentally, I don’t walk around with pieces of paper with crosses on them) I write an event, so I can map how I am feeling. Say with eating – I indulge myself in eating something I really want – a popular choice here would be something with buckets of sugar in it (7H), which leads to regret (7B), beating myself up about it (3/4B) and then just letting it go. Mapping this in my head illustrates to me that one of my patterns/cycles is ‘indulgence = regret/self loathing’, and it stops me from repeating it.

Perhaps it would be worth just mapping your own today. I am no expert by any means, but its certainly worked for me, and whether you’re my friend beating himself up for that second drink or feeling ‘the urge’, or whatever it is that troubles you, at the very least, you’ll be self aware, and that’s what our entire process was about.

Do it, friends, I promise you, you’ll feel better for knowing. Then, you can give yourself a break, enjoy your life, have a second drink, and even, if its your poison, some good old fashioned guilt-free sex.

Until tomorrow

Yours incoherently,

Closed Box (6E today)

PS – Feel free to leave me a comment, perhaps even just a number and a letter, letting me know how you feel today.

PPS – Lots of new things to play with on the side of the blog. You can now easily access past posts either through the calendar, or the last ten entries are now listed at the top.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Tuesday 19th August):

Birth

1943. Billy J. Kramer born William Howard Ashton in Bootle, Lancashire.

On Tour

1965. As The Beatles arrive at Houston Airport in Texas, 5,000 fans break through police lines and rush towards their chartered plane. Luckily, a catering truck is backed up to the aircraft and the boys are ferried to safety. Promoter Bill Weaver said that the security force assembled to ensure the group's safety was larger than that used by President Johnson when he was in the city. Sell out audiences of 12,000 at each of tonight's shows will earn The Beatles £ 30,050. The city authories, who own the Coliseum where the concerts are taking place, have demanded a $ 10,000 (£ 3,500) damage bond from the promoter.

In Shops

1981. Neil Tennant meets Chris Lowe for the first time in an electronics shop in London's Kings Road. Finding a common interest in dance music, the pair start writing together, eventually forming a duo called West End. That name soon gets dropped in favour of Pet Shop Boys, a name they had jokingly used to refer to some friends who worked in an Ealing pet shop.

In The Press

1976. Glasgow's Evening Times runs a headline, "Ramones In Teenage Glue Death Outrage". The paper claims that the band advocates the habit of sniffing glue. A local member of parliament, James Dempsey, tries to have the band's first album banned from Scottish stores.

On Television

1972. The Midnight Special (NBC, U.S.A.) Pilot show. Host: John Denver. Guests: Argent; Harry Chapin; David Clayton Thomas; 'Mama' Cass Elliot; The Everly Brothers; The Isley Brothers. Here's Argent with "Hold Your Head Up".

Death

1996. Gospel-rock drummer Steve Marsh (Elim Hall, One Hundred Days) dies of liver cancer, first diagnosed in June.

Babble

The first thing I have to do today, is apologize. Somehow, I managed to put today's blog (i.e. Tuesday 19th August) up in place of yesterday's. I didn't realise until late last night and decided to leave it for the morning. So, here I am correcting a rather idiotic mistake.

Apart from that, there's little to report today. The Ballerina Ballroom Blog is getting a lot of interest. Whether that's as a result of my flyer and poster blitz of Nairn remains to be seen. I have started to feature the regular bands that played there and have reworked it so it's easier to navigate. The trouble is it just keeps giving me more work! All the video clips I've added to it will now have to be added to the index of clips on the Rockmine TV pages. No rest for the wicked. Oh well, I better get on...

TNH was arranged as two long corridors which were bridged at intervals by connecting corridors. the

TNH was arranged as two long corridors which were bridged at intervals by connecting corridors. the wards were all laid out off the back corridor and each had a day room opening out to the grounds. there were squirrels and rabbits and trees.Patients were kept in hospital for several days after surgery, probably too long if one post appendicectomy patient is an example. the physio was coming to see him so he ran away across the gardens!

Having patients who were, in effect, convalescing, was very beneficial for us nurses because not only could they look after themselves, they could make the tea and dish it out from the trolley. No doubt that wouldn't be allowed now, health and safety don't you know!

A patient started a tea club. He got a notebook, took money from all the other patients and went to the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS, now WRVS as Royal is now included in the title) and bought biscuits and extra sugar so the patients could have more. When he was discharged he passed the book on to someone else and so the club continued. I think he came back(to have his other hernia repaired) and ran the club again. Some of the men used to get hungry so we would save roast meat from lunch and make them sandwiches in the afternoon.

It might sound as if we had little work to do but that wasn't the case at all. We made all the beds, gave bed baths, did dressings, dished out meals and took patients to theatre. When patients were discharged we stripped their beds, turned the matresses and disinfected them and the lockers. We cleaned the sluice and the linen cupboard and did the TPRs and blood pressures. The beds were all low which put a strain on our backs (which is why I've had a hip replacement and have got a disc problem). We weren't allowed to sit down and my feet always killed me! There was always great camaraderie though and the ward maid was part of the team too which is something that ought to be considered these days- no contract cleaners!

Rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you haven't read Brautigan before, I would easily recommend Trout Fishing in America or In Watermelon Sugar over The Hawkline Monster. On the other hand, I don't think you could go wrong reading the Hawkline Monster first, as it is classic, exemplary Brautigan and holds true to the surrealistic/light-hearted qualities that are also strong in his more famous works. I am not entirely sure why The Hawkline Monster is not more well-known or revered, as it is just as playful and creative, if not more so. I feel as though perhaps it is pushed aside merely because the plot is so straight-forward, narrowly linear (at first glance, at least!), and seemingly simplistic.

The story is about two head-hunters who start off in Hawaii (not Brautigan's cup of tea, which is reflected in the constant referencing of Hawaii as being a strange place). The narrative is immediately set as the head-hunters are paid to do a job that takes them to Eastern Oregon. The Hawkline Manor is the destination, and what transpires there is both magical, haunting (it is a "gothic" story in the spirit of Wuthering Heights and Edgar Allen Poe), and circular. The plot runs in circles, and is meant to. The house is haunted by a monster that can control how people behave, and time slows down because of it. The characters get confused, are constantly questioning their surroundings, and maintaining the pace of a snail. While this might hinder the novel, the simple prose style that is so characteristic of Brautigan allows the book to be read in a sitting or two. I would most closely relate it to The Abortion, though the surrealism in Hawkline is on the same level as In Watermelon Sugar.

Though the story uses literary devices and comments on psycho-social themes, the standard light comedy is also enforced throughout the book. Ladies say "fuck," there are two characters--light and shadow--who both swear and play the roles of domination and submission (respectively), and one description that goes so far as describing shooting a person as turning that person into sausage. Check out the book. Brautigan was revolutionary and will always be underrated and under-respected. The book is short, so you don't have to worry about wasting any of your time, either.

Joy Division - "Candidate" from Unknown Pleasures (1979)

I recently visited Manchester, England, and my thoughts the entire time I was in the city were consumed by Joy Division. The Manchester-based band released two albums in its lifetime before the suicide in 1980 of singer Ian Curtis. After Curtis' death, the remaining members of the band found much success as New Order.

Manchester is a very interesting city of great historical import. It was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution as well as the home of bands like Joy Division and The Smiths. Also, the city served as home base for Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. The city was also the site of the largest bomb ever to be detonated in Britain. In June 1996, the IRA detonated a truck bomb in the city centre. No deaths were reported, but the bomb caused over £400 million in property damage.

This song from Joy Division's debut LP is showcases characteristic dark, haunting vocals from Curtis over a dark, haunting instrumental track. Curtis had a unique performance style and can be seen in action here. Curtis also suffered from epilepsy, and would sometimes have seizures onstage.

Finally, the band got the name "Joy Division" from the name used by Nazis for a group of Jewish women who were kept as sex slaves during World War II.
