TV-Tokyo’s half hour weekly Super GT show today reminded me just how rubbish the weather was at Fuji last week. My Nismo hat didnt keep me warm, but the Nismo championship did keep me happy. Which brings me to two things, one of which I did last summer (heh - actually September, so autumn really, but so very much warmer) and another which happened ten years ago.

September was my first visit to KN’s Factory, ten years ago was the JGTC championship win for Masami Kageyama and Eric Comas in this Pennzoil Nismo GT-R. I saw the car as I passed by the store and almost crashed into a bridge. So returned with a camera.

If you were to drive by in September, you would quite likely have seen this.

As raced, with bugs.

The aero was a bit more extreme the following year, but this is still pretty tech looking. Perfect way to Sayonara the ’90s.

Somebody kerbed the wheels. Eric? Masami?

15 years of Nismo! The Nismo Festival at Fuji Speedway on November 30 will celebrate 25 years. Omedeto Nismo! Might be a bit chilly…

Eventually I noticed the sign asking me not to touch the car. Honestly - I didnt touch much of it…

Obviously no truth to the rumour that Japanese cars have smaller towhooks.

Quite a view that must have been. Dont worry - GT5 will have a cockpit view.

A Frenchman sat here. So did his Nihonjin buddy.

I was the freshest of freshy Gaijin at this stage & this was my first JGTC experience, so this image stayed with me until the racket of Fuji’s home straight concrete canyon blasted it out. I blame the VTEC’s.

Remember when SE Racing made those silver wing things, called Wing Things, that you could strap on you arm and be the BMX King of 7 year olds on your block? No? Yeah - Im old - I get sidetracked easily.

At the time, I thought that the Zexel signage detracted from the “purity” of the Pennzoil livery. I quite like it now. Ahh nostalgia… Yep. Old desu.

The products from this vending machine sell themselves. With help from the poster. I couldnt find a machine that vended posters. But the search made me thirsty. A cunning plan indeed…

They sure did. But this post isnt about Z’s.

As you would expect, the engine cover from a Nissan R90C was stashed in the window…

…along with the nose.

On a later sortie along Route 16, I noticed that something had changed here…

Blimey, I thought.

Why, isnt that a Nissan R382? With a 6 litre V12? This one is from 1969, a golden era for Japanese Group 7 sportscars. Any era that produced these Nissans and the Toyota 7 is golden in my book. Porsche turned up with a 917k for the Japanese GP, but Nissan took the top two spots. Gan-san was one of the drivers of the winning car.

If you werent already thinking that KN’s Factory was the best place in the world to be on this particular day, a Tommy Kaira ZZ was parked outside…

Tjorven (eller Kalmar som den hette på exportmarknaden) var en skåpbil som tillverkades av Kalmar Verkstad AB. Tillverkningen skedde mellan år 1969 och 1971.

Bilen var framtagen för att användas som brevbärarbil och hade i originalutförandet endast en fällbar pall som kunde användas för en passagerare. Bilen hade skjutdörrar med förarplatsen på högersidan för att brevbäraren skulle kunna stanna bilen precis vid brevlådan, öppna dörren och lägga posten i postlådan utan att gå ur bilen. Några prototyper med kaross i plåt tillverkades för utprovning. När den sedan började produceras fick Tjorven en kaross av glasfiberplast ovanpå en ram av stålprofiler.

I read many times that Bollywood movies would have songs where the boy and girl would be shown singing songs running around trees. Honestly, I have not seen any proper song fulfilling this description. On the other hand, I have seen dozens of songs where boy and girl are shown singing elsewhere, viz on car, boat, train etc. In fact, there are enough number of such songs for me to open tags like “car” song, “boat” song etc. So far I have not felt the need of having a tag for “tree ” songs, that is how elusive such songs are.

Here is a boat song picturised on Sanjay Khan and Sadhana. For Sadhana, such songs were common place ( remember “Aaja aayi bahaar, O mere Rajkumar ?”), but for Sanjay Khan, it must have been uncharted waters.

From the song it is difficult to guess how it must have been picturised, but such songs make you feel like dance. Such songs must have been ideal dance numbers for public processions, if not for parties during those days, I am sure. It is a Laxmikant Pyarelal number, after all, and we have seen in the past that such numbers found wide use in many conditions, be it a boat ride or an elephant ride that the hero was performing.

Ya anteriormente les había hablado de Billy Joe Royal, el cantante estadounidense -originario de la ciudad de Savannah, Georgia- catapultado a la fama en 1965 con el tema Down in the Boondocks. Tras este éxito, Royal tuvo una carrera notable durante el resto de la década de 1960, logrando colocar en las listas de popularidad (y en el gusto de la crítica) canciones como I Knew You When , Hush (la misma canción que sería célebre un poco más tarde con Deep Purple -de hecho existen dos versiones distintas a cargo de este mismo grupo, la primera fue grabada en 1968 y otra veinte años después, en el 88) y Cherry Hill Park (que fue su tercer éxito más grande como cantante Pop). Tanto I Knew You When como Hush fueron compuestas por el cantautor Joe South, su amigo personal y más cercano colaborador durante los primeros años de su carrera. Escuchemos I Knew You When.

Royal, al igual que ha ocurrido con otros cantantes de la época, le dio espacio a la música Country en su repertorio (aunque, de hecho, Down in the Boondocks ya tenía cierto dejo…). De 1970 hasta mediados de la década de 1990 logró resaltar en este género. Koranteng's Drum 1969 Political Collage

Koranteng has scanned pages and written some commentary on issues of Ghana’s Drum Magazine from 1969. You can read his excellent commentary and view some of the pictures at Koranteng’s Toli. You can also see a slideshow here of pages he has scanned. This is a lot of fun to view, for people who remember those times, and for younger people who are interested in their history.

1969 was an election year in Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah’s one-party regime had been overthrown and civilian rule loomed. But that was by the by - the magazine was typically focused on lighter issues. By way of background, Drum magazine is most known from its South African roots but it also had Ghanaian and Nigerian editions from the late sixties until the eighties. The equivalents would be Ebony, Jet or say Essence (alternatively think of Hello and Paris Match) ergo, none too weighty society papers. A good place to start then would be “Drum’s fabulous contest to find the prettiest mini-skirt (and its wearer) in Ghana.”

Koranteng gives an excellent rundown of events and cultural activities during that year. His mention of education touched a nerve:

The obligatory photo of African school-children in morning prayer raises the issue of church or state. The big question was “whether the churches should continue to manage schools with local, urban and city councils or should the management of all educational institutions come under a unified system to be directed by the Ministry of Education”. …

The public/private conundrum is very much in the news in today’s Ghana, private schools are all the rage, often funded by churches. The jury is still out as to their effectiveness and the question of standards; the Ministry of Education still has to reconcile unyielding demand for public education with limited resources; worse, everyone has an opinion. The easiest way to get any Ghanaian talking for a good hour is to broach the topic of education, we all wax eloquent about what is to be done.

The political collage at the top of this post is from his slideshow. More typical of the magazine might be the pretty girls on the covers, or the collage of advertising. But I tend to be a political history buff. Koranteng is a perceptive observer of social history, I recommend you read his commentary.
