“Do Badan” was a movie full of some wonderful songs written by Shakeel Badayuni and composed by Ravi. The song “jab chali thandi hawa” sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Asha Parekh was a sweet and melodious song to listen to.

Asha Bhonsle has sung songs of many moods and many varieties, and she has come out with flying colours, whatever be the nature of the song. This song is certainly not an easy song to sing, but she has sung it beautifully. This song must be one of the memorable and evergreen songs sung by Asha Bhonsle. And indeed, this song is one of the hundreds of high quality songs that Ravi composed in his long and illustrious career spanning four decades as a music director.

This song is among the many evergreen songs which listeners have listened to for the last four decades and more. I am also among those. But I had no idea which movie this song was from and how it was picturised.

Now I have seen the picturisation. Listening to the song and watching the picturisation, I see that Asha Parekh is lying on the bed, sans any sparkle in her eyes. She is not singing this song, rather this song is being played in the background.

This is obviously a sad song, and in fact it appears that Asha Parekh is critically ill and is in her deathbed, waiting for her beloved to be with her when the end comes.

A very sad and poignant situation really, and one that is quite a real life situation,and it has got to move the audience.

This is timeless music composed by Ravi and this poignant lyrics were created by Shakeel Badayuni. Along with Lata, the three created a masterpiece that continues to move its listeners even today.

1966 Hulk Bumper Sticker

Vintage Thursday!  What a fun age to be a Hulk fan.  Not only did he become one of the biggest superheroes ever - so we have plenty of merchandise to buy now - but we also have the pleasure of trying to collect the older items.  Like this one here.  The Hulk bumper sticker.  “Don’t Honk - You’ll Disturb The Incredible Hulk”  with an image of the Hulk taken directly off of TTA #77.  I love that cover it’s taken off.  Rick Jones is telling the Army that Bruce is the Hulk.  Or Vice Versa.  But how great is the sticker?  I mean imagine driving behind someone with this sticker on their car?  Even if the person was driving like a 4 foot woman I still wouldn’t honk!  Just in case I really would disturb the Hulk.

Ya anteriormente les había hablado de Billy Joe Royal, el cantante estadounidense -originario de la ciudad de Savannah, Georgia- catapultado a la fama en 1965 con el tema Down in the Boondocks. Tras este éxito, Royal tuvo una carrera notable durante el resto de la década de 1960, logrando colocar en las listas de popularidad (y en el gusto de la crítica) canciones como I Knew You When , Hush (la misma canción que sería célebre un poco más tarde con Deep Purple -de hecho existen dos versiones distintas a cargo de este mismo grupo, la primera fue grabada en 1968 y otra veinte años después, en el 88) y Cherry Hill Park (que fue su tercer éxito más grande como cantante Pop). Tanto I Knew You When como Hush fueron compuestas por el cantautor Joe South, su amigo personal y más cercano colaborador durante los primeros años de su carrera. Escuchemos I Knew You When.

Royal, al igual que ha ocurrido con otros cantantes de la época, le dio espacio a la música Country en su repertorio (aunque, de hecho, Down in the Boondocks ya tenía cierto dejo…). De 1970 hasta mediados de la década de 1990 logró resaltar en este género. No abandonó el Pop, a pesar de ello, siguiendo produciendo temas con su estilo tradicional (su versión de Under the Boardwalk es estupenda, la mejor que he escuchado, junto con la de Bette Midler). De 1969, recordemos a Cherry Hill Park.

…Y rematemos con su versión de Hush (la primera que se conoció de este famoso tema).

One of my friends was in Halifax over the weekend.  He went to comic book store that was closing down.  He saw this die cast model of the 1966 TV series Batmobile.  So he bought for me.  He payed $20 for it.  I looked online and found it for sale between $35 and $50US.  So I think he got a pretty good deal.

El norteamericano Robert “Bobby” Fischer es recordado como uno de los genios más brillantes, rebeldes y a la vez excéntricos en la historia del ajedrez. Sobre él se cuentan miles de anécdotas, que van desde partidas deslumbrantes hasta demandas personales imposibles de cumplir. Entre las historias menos conocidas de Fischer está el enfrentamiento ajedrecístico que sostuvo en 1966, en La Habana, durante la Olimpiada Mundial, contra Fidel Castro.

Las relaciones entre el campeón del mundo y Cuba fueron muy especiales. Comienzan con la admiración de Bobby por Capablanca. En una ocasión un periodista le preguntó a Fischer quiénes eran los mejores jugadores de todos los tiempos. La respuesta fue contundente: Capablanca, Fischer y Fischer.

Bobby visitó  Cuba por primera vez en Marzo de 1956, con el Club de Ajedrez Log Cabin y ofreció una exhibición de simultáneas en un local dedicado al juego ciencia en La Habana. Varios años después decidió aceptar la invitación que le cursara Cuba para tomar parte, en 1965, en la cuarta edición del torneo internacional que homenajeaba al Capa. Al mismo asistirían los mejores jugadores del mundo, entre ellos los soviéticos Smislov, Gueller y el yugoslavo Ivkov. Pero el Departamento de Estado le negó el permiso de viaje a Bobby. Era una práctica habitual  impedir el contacto entre deportistas de los dos países. Parecía que el genial norteamericano se iba a perder uno de los eventos mas fuertes de todos los tiempos; pero…

Puestos de común acuerdo, la Comisión Organizadora anunció que Bobby jugaría el campeonato a través del teletipo. Sería la primera vez en la historia que un hombre jugara todo un torneo desde larga distancia. Antes de iniciarse el evento, Fischer estuvo a punto de retirarse; pero por suerte el incidente quedó solucionado. El 25 de agosto de 1965 a las 3 de la tarde comenzó la competencia; sin embargo por dificultades tecnológicas la partida más esperada, entre Heinz Lechman de Alemania y Bobby Fischer de Estados Unidos se inició cinco horas mas tardes. El Gran Maestro Lechman hizo su jugada con blancas y esta fue transmitida hasta el Marschall Chess Club de New York donde la recibió Fischer y respondió minutos más tardes. Las negras plantearon una Defensa Siciliana, Variante Najdorf. El encuentro terminó cerca de las 3 de la madrugada del día siguiente y Fischer mereció el triunfo.

Así, noche tras noche, Fischer enfrentó a 21 jugadores. Las partidas duraron entre 5 y 7 horas. El torneo se extendió todo un mes, hasta el 25 de septiembre y Bobby totalizó 15 puntos, producto de 12 éxitos, 6 tablas y 3 derrotas. Concluyó en cuarto lugar por el sistema de desempate. La victoria más espectacular fue la que obtuvo ante el soviético y ya por ese entonces campeón del mundo, Vassily Smislov. Al final, Cuba pagó por los servicios de teletipos más de 10 mil dólares, una cifra muy elevada para la década de los sesenta. Fischer pudo visitar a La Habana un año después, en 1966, durante la celebración de la XVII Olimpiada Mundial de ajedrez como líder del equipo de Estados Unidos que finalizó en la segunda posición. Bobby fue el ganador de la medalla de oro entre todos los primeros tableros, ganó 14 partidas, entabló dos y solo perdió una.

Durante esta olimpiada Bobby se enfrentó a Fidel Castro en una inusual partida de ajedrez. Según cuenta el maestro mexicano Filiberto Terrazas en un artículo publicado en la revista “Jaque Mate”, La Habana, 1966, todo comenzó cuando Fidel y él jugaban tablero por medio. Minutos más tardes a Fidel se unió Tigrán Petrosián de la Unión Soviética, entonces Terrazas pidió ayuda a Fischer que se encontraba cerca. Así se estableció un juego entre 4, por un lado Fidel-Petrosián con blancas y por el otro Terrazas-Bobby. Al final las blancas resultaron las vencedoras. Fischer conversó un poco con Fidel y antes de despedirse le obsequió un libro autografiado.

Muchas cosas pasaron en la vida del genial Fischer después de su coronación como campeón del mundo en Reyjavik en 1972. Su muerte en 2008 es una gran pérdida para el mundo del ajedrez, aunque llevara años alejado de los tableros. Solo nos queda especular sobre cuánto más habría aportado el genio norteamericano si su controvertida personalidad no se hubiera interpuesto. Ni su desaparición física o años los años transcurridos han podido borrar de la memoria de los cubanos la figura de Bobby Fischer. Su decisión de pasar por encima de la voluntad del Departamento de Estado y, en franco desafío, tomar parte en uno de los torneos de ajedrez más fuertes desarrollados en Cuba y la brillante actuación en la Olimpiada de La Habana de 1966 le ganó la admiración eterna del pueblo de la Isla.

Tercera entrega de la serie. En ella se comparan versiones ante la versión original de sus creadores. Para esta entrega tenemos un clásico de los Rolling Stones: Out Of Time. Grabado originalmente en 1966 para el álbum Aftermath. Ese mismo año Chris Farlow interpretaría su propia versión, con ni más ni menos el propio Mick Jagger haciendo los coros… con ese ingrediente sorpresa, más la potente voz y carismática voz del propio Farlow solo podía salir una joya sonora como esta…

N’est pas parmi ses premiers titres mais c’est l’une de celle dans lesquelles elle faisait entendre sa voix. Une chanson où elle dénonçait l’apartheid.

Dans ces années là, l’alcool était interdit aux noirs en Afrique du sud et, c’est ainsi que sont nés les Shebeen. Shebeen, c’est une appellation attribuée aux bars clandestins. In those days it was illegal for blacks to drink in South Africa and because of this, the shebeen was born. Shebeen is the name for illegal drinking houses. And whenever the police would raid the townships, little kids would run around yelling “Khawuleza mama” which means “hurry mum don’t get caught”.
