1950s and 1960s saw many historical movies ( mostly from Mughal period) being made. These movies have become part of Indian psyche. So much so that there are many people who actually think that emperor Akbar spoke in a “fata baans” kind of croaking voice, and that there was actually someone called Anarkali. History tells us that Akbar hardly looked like Prithviraj Kapoor and there is no mention of Anarkali in historical chronicles, but then far less number of people read history than those that watch movies.

I am sure everyone who ever saw the movie “Taj Mahal” would believe likewise that Shahjahan looked like Pradeep Kumar and that Mumtaz Mahal looked like Bina Rai.If the real life Shahjahan and Mumtaz Mahal were anything like Pradeed Kumar and Bina Rai, they must have sung some wonderful duets those days, which are sadly lost to us.

“Jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega” is such a simple lyric, but it has now become an an out and out iconic song. Just about any one who listens to Bollywood music has definitely heard, and even hummed ( however badly) this song sometime or the other. Roshan was mindbloggingly prolific in churning out one memorable song after another in those days, and 1963 was an especially productive year for him.

This all time evergreen song was, unsurprisingly, the top song in Binaca geetmala final of 1963.

Song- Jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega (Tajmahal 1963) Singer-Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Sahir, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega
roke zamaana chahe roke khudaayi
tumko aana padega
jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega

tarasti nigaahon ne aawaaz dee hai

ye maana hamen jaan se jaana padega
par ye samajhlo tumne jab bhi pukara
hamko aana padega
jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega

ham apni wafa pe na ilzaam lenge
tumhe dil diya hai tumhe jaan bhi denge aaa
jab ishq ka sauda kiya phir kya ghabraana
jo waada kiya wo nibhana padega

chamakte hain jab tak ye chaand aur taare

When it comes to qawwalis, Roshan was a music director non pareil. A few of his memorable qawwalis have already been posted in this blog. Here is another one viz “Nigaahein milaane ko jee chahta hai”.

This qawwali from “Dil hi to hai” is one of the immortal qawwalis of Bollywood movies. This is sung by Asha Bhonsle, and she shows her versatility as a singer in this song. I have always felt that she was the female equivalent of Kishore when it came to singing bubbly songs. Here she shows that she was the female equivalent of Rafi as well, when it came to singing songs like this qawwali, which was the forte of Rafi among male singers.

The lyrics written by Sahir are absolutely fantastic, and more importantly, easily understandable. And Roshan is of course outstanding as a music director.

When it comes to picturisation, Nutan is rather cute in this song. She was hardly a great dancer or great under this kind of roles, but she has hung on gamely, and has done a decent job. In fact, there are fans who think that she was great in this movie and in this song.

So, here is another wonderful gem from Roshan on the occasion of his death anniversary today.

Same year that the (New) Scene opened it’s doors in Ham Yard, (Soho), to become the premier London club and forum for all things ‘mod’ and hip in the capital.

The cut is delivered in fine style by legendary Detroit vocal group The Miracles with William ‘Smokey’ Robinson on lead supported by Bobby Rogers, Marv Tarplin, childhood friend and, (along with Smokey), former 5 Chimes member Ronald White and female vocalist Claudette Rogers. The Miracles paved the way for Motown’s success in the early sixties with cuts like ‘Shop Around’, ‘You Really Got A Hold On Me’ and this one apoun which the Berry Gordy empire was built.

(Joe Hinton - You Know It Ain’t Right)

Round two of the mod/ernist musical merry go round and this time it’s courtesy of a relatively obscure vocalist by the name of Joe Hinton who up until 1958 had been a gospel singer but, it was with this one, (recorded for Don Robey’s Backbeat label in 1963), that he broke through. Going on to have a minor ‘hit’ with his version of Willie Nelson’s ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ the following year. Unfortunately his career was cut short in 1968 after losing a battle with Skin Cancer but for themusicologist he is, (almost), immortalised by this slice of the Mod/ernist pie.

I’ve always liked Doctor Who ever since I was a kid back in the 1990’s and early 2000

I’ve always liked Doctor Who ever since I was a kid back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. I’m still a teenager, just 16, and I still like the good old Doctor. There has been many doctors since it was started back in 1963. The first doctor was a old guy who is long since dead. I was fascinated by him and his personality. I must admit, I did try to copy some expects of his personality and character (bit stupid to do so if you ask me these days). A couple of years back, the ABC was replaying some of the old Doctor Who episodes from the first ones in 1963 right up to the last classical one in 1989 with that guy. Since I got my first video player eight years ago, I’ve been borrowing them from the local Warwick Shire library and playing them on my video player (some people would call it a VCR). I was the last of the video player generation and so I remember the video players (some would say video recorders but who cares). For those of the DVD generation who don;t know what a video player is, a video player is a old version of a DVD player. Dear god that made me feel old for saying that. Stupid DVD generation. Any way, back to the topic of this post.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (the BBC) stopped making Doctor Who shows for over a decade. They started making them again three years ago. The first new one was a Scots person. Then they got rid of him and replaced him with some accented guy called David Tennant. There was a show about him on “Who Do You Think you Are” just a couple of weeks ago on the Special Broadcasting Service (the SBS). I really liked him. One guy at my school thought he was hot. But I want say who the guy was (Don’t worry AK your secret is safe with me, comrade).

s announced that comrade Tennant (no, he isn’t one of us, comrades) will no longer be playing the role of Doctor Who. That really sucks if you ask me. David Tennant will still appear in four new episodes .According to their web site, the new Doctor Who will make his appearance on this year’s Christmas special that will be called “The Next Doctor”. I, along with many other people including AK, will be looking forward to the special. Oh by the way, I hope the bloody ABC plays it in December not in the middle of next year like they did with the 2007 Christmas special. Don’t be a mob of pricks, guys.

British Broadcasting Corporation:

David Tennant has announced that he will leave the award winning BBC drama Doctor Who when he has completed the filming of four special episodes which will be screened in 2009 and early in 2010.

David Tennant first appeared as The Doctor in 2005 and has gone on to star in three series and three Christmas specials as the tenth incarnation of the Time Lord. The BBC has confirmed that David will continue to play The Doctor in the four specials that will make up the 2009 series before a new Doctor takes over for Series 5. Tennant will also star in the Doctor Who Christmas Special titled The Next Doctor this year.

David Tennant comments “I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the TARDIS console forever and I fear that if I don’t take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will. You would be prising the TARDIS key out of my cold dead hand. This show has been so special to me, I don’t want to outstay my welcome.

“This is all a long way off, of course. I’m not quitting, I’m back in Cardiff in January to film four special episodes which will take Doctor Who all the way through 2009. I’m still the Doctor all next year but when the time finally comes I’ll be honoured to hand on the best job in the world to the next lucky git - whoever that may be.

“I’d always thought the time to leave would be in conjunction with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner who have been such a huge part of it all for me. Steven Moffat is the most brilliant and exciting writer, the only possible successor to Russell and it was sorely tempting to be part of his amazing new plans for the show.

Here is this song “naache man mora magan” from “Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen”. I have listened to this song in past, but never fully or with rapt attention. But this time, when I listened to this song as a preparation for including it in the blog, I really was made to sit up and take notice.

I have mentioned in almost all posts dealing with Rafi songs that Rafi’s voice was divine. If one listens to songs, one can find some shortcomings in the diction of singers, even legendary singers. But in this particular song, I could find absolutely no blemish.

This is a semi classical song, and I feel that this must go down as an example of a perfect semi classical song in Bollywood movies. It is an absolutely wonderful and fantastic song sung by Rafi. The voice is so crystal clear and blemishless that one cannot have words to describe the perfection of this singing. As far as I am concerned, this has got to be one of the best semi classical songs in Bollywood movies, bar none.

This song was written by Shailendra and music was by S D Burman. The tabla for this song was played by renowned classical tabla exponent Pt Samta Prasad.

(Walter Jackson - That’s What Mama Say)

new theme on themusicologist and one that is very much a part of my musical education due to the fact that both my mum and dad were first generation mod/ernists, (1962-1966). the cuts laid down this week were all played in and around London during the above period.

first up is a piece from one of the premier ‘mod’ labels, operating out of ‘Chi’, OKeh. A label that was one of the first to focus on ‘immigrant’ music in the 1920’s recording many of the early Jazz pioneers such as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Sidney Bechet and Mamie Smith. After some time spent lost in the musical wilderness the company’s fortunes were reignited by employing Carl Davis in 1962 as head of A&R who had the vision to employ Curtis Mayfield as associate producer in 1963 as well as three of the best arrangers Johnny Pate, Riley Hampton and Gerald Sims who is quoted to have said

“the Chicago sound came from basically one source…Curtis Mayfield”

This one from 1963 is sung by one of themusicologist’s favourite singers, Walter Jackson. Produced by the aforementioned Carl Davis, arranged by Riley Hampton and songwriten by none other than Curtis Mayfield with, (possibly), the Impressions harmonising.

Noua eră a manipulării a început. SUA demonstrează, din nou, că este ţara tuturor posibilităţilor, locul unde libertatea este mai importantă decât orice, “the land of the free and the home of the brave”.

“We are and will always be The UNITED States of America!”

“Parasmani” was a C grade movie the likes of which rarely got noticed by mainstream audience. But this movie became a big hit because its music simply caught the imagination of the public. Almost all the songs from this movie became hugely popular and gatecrashed into the party of Binaca geetmala which was otherwise reserved for songs of A grade movies.

The music for this movie was composed by newcomers Laxmikant Pyarelal. These two prodigiously talented musicians had begun their careers as instrumentalists in the orchestra of many established music directors for nearly a decade before setting out as independent music directors. Their first venture as music directors never saw the light of the day.

This movie “Parasmani” was the first released movie for music directors Laxmikant Pyarelal and this movie made them a well known name and they landed more assignments. They never looked back since.

Rafi and Lata helped the aspiring musical duo a lot. Rafi in fact sang in their first movie ( which was never released) and wished them a long and successful career. His wish began to get fulfulled from this movie onwards.

This movie was produced in an era when color movies were expensive to produce and movies were especially advertised as being colour movies. Censor certificate of this movie describes “Parasmani” as “partially colour”. THe first few reels of the movie were Black and white whereas the rest were in colour. This song ” hansta hua noorani chehra” fell in the colour portion of the movie. And needless to say, this song ” hansta hua noorani chehra” became a huge hit. It finished 6th in Binaca getmala 1963 finals. It was an astounding feat for a newcomer musical duo to make their music soar to such heights despite composing this music for a C grade movie.

Not just this song, every other song in this movie became timeless. I should know. I have obtained the difficult to get VCD of this movie and I have watched all the songs of this movie. Such a debut performance by a music director in a Bollywood movie has not been matched since.

Matched only by the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan continues to captivate music and pop culture fans with a seemingly never-ending stream of new and old recordings, books, documentaries, feature films, and more. The Other Side of the Mirror - Live at Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 is a worthy addition to the canon; whether this 83-minute compilation will serve to illuminate the Dylan myth or merely perpetuate it is open to question, but without a doubt there’s plenty of fascinating material here. There are nearly 20 songs represented, covering three consecutive years of Dylan appearances at the famed Rhode Island festival. Some have been seen before (most recently in No Direction Home, Martin Scorsese’s 2005 Dylan doc, and in Festival, a Newport chronicle released on DVD that same year and directed by Murray Lerner, who is also responsible for The Other Side of the Mirror). Some are from Dylan’s daytime “workshops,” others from his nighttime main stage performances. Some are complete, others oddly truncated. Some are terrific (like “Chimes of Freedom,” 1964), others not so much (cf. the turgid “With God on Our Side” from ‘63, with Joan Baez adding shrill harmony). In any case, these were the years when Dylan assumed the mantle of “spokesman of a generation,” whether he wanted it or not. We see him evolving from the earnest young protest singer of ‘63 to the visionary artist of the following year who, with the astonishing torrent of rhymes, alliterations, symbols, and brilliant turns of phrase in “Chimes” and “Mr. Tambourine Man,” turned the whole notion of songwriting on its ear. And, of course, we also witness Dylan’s turn from acoustic to electric guitar, when he was joined onstage by members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band (sans Butterfield himself) in 1965; only two songs from that legendary (and, at the time, infamous) gig are seen here, and viewed four decades after the fact, neither “Maggie’s Farm” nor “Like a Rolling Stone” is all that special, notwithstanding some searing solo work by guitarist Mike Bloomfield. The DVD package, which includes a bonus interview with Lerner and a nice booklet with liner notes by Tom Piazza, adds to the appeal of what has to rank as a must-have for Dylanologists of every stripe. –Sam Graham

By Lauren Thompson

This review contains spoilers.

This week, history was made as an African-American became the first black President of the United States of America. The election of Barack Obama, as noted by ‘Dubya’, is a ‘dream fulfilled’, hard-earned through decades of civil rights battles. Whatever one’s politics, few could fail to be moved by the Senator’s words as he addressed his home city of Chicago as the country’s future leader:

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

45 years ago, when President-Elect Obama was just 2 years old, another historic speech was made, this time by President Jack Kennedy. JFK’s 1963 Civil Rights speech was the announcement of his contentious political decision to highlight racial integration as a moral and legal issue:

This nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.

The sobering parallels apparent in the words of these two wise men were certainly not lost on me as I watched Crisis: Making of a Presidential Commitment (Robert Drew, 1963) for the first time this Wednesday.

Crisis follows the 30 hours leading up to the making of Kennedy’s ‘presidential commitment’ to civil rights, but at the heart of Robert Drew’s documentary is the handling, mostly by Attorney General Robert Kennedy, of Governor George Wallace’s decision to stand at the entrance to the University of Alabama, in order to prevent ‘Negro’ students Vivian Malone and James Hood from enrolling at America’s last unintegrated university.

It is clear from the start that, despite the claims to truth and objectivity of Drew and his team (including Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker) as founders of the Direct Cinema movement, Wallace is fighting a losing battle in the representation stakes. He is hindered not just by the four decades of Civil Rights movements that colour our perception of this documentary today, but by a filmmaking style that presents him as closed, unreceptive and uncompromisingly political, in direct opposition to the affable, good-natured, personable and, crucially, media-savvy Kennedy brothers

One needs to look no further than the opening sequence, where Bobby Kennedy stands at the head of a heavily populated breakfast table, surrounded by children, trying to encourage his pre-school daughter to drink up her milk. He applauds her empty glass, then retreats into the adjoining room to receive a phone call, cereal bowl in hand. Cut to the house of Governor Wallace, where a toddler plays discords on the piano under the watchful eye of a stout African-American maid. As the camera pans to take in the stern portraits of Confederate heroes that adorn the walls, Wallace himself is nowhere to be seen, preferring instead to afford himself the rather more grand entry of a brisk walk down the sweeping staircase of his Southern mansion. This scene, while tremendously effective in establishing our crisis hero, is nevertheless in opposition to the Direct Cinema ideal that editing should be used to convey narrative, not create meaning.

It is easy to forget while watching Crisis the groundbreaking nature of the vérité style. It can seem almost a joke to us today; observational documentary remained the dominant mode for much of the 1970s and 80s, was harnessed (read: ambushed) by the docu-soap in the late 1990s and then finally parodied by mockumentary in titles such as The Office (BBC, 2001-2003)and This Is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984). And yet, the reality is that it was not until the 1960s that events such as those in Crisis became filmable, thanks to technological innovations of lightweight cameras and (most crucially) portable synchronous sound recording. Handheld camerawork, use of natural lighting and location shooting is almost something of a cliché today. But Crisis is sublime only because of the access to subjects made possible by the Direct Cinema style. One of the highlights of the film is a scene in which Bobby Kennedy puts daughter Carrie on the phone to his bemused Deputy Attorney General, Nicholas Katzenbach, just as ‘Uncle Nick’ is trying to orchestrate a strategy for enrolling the black students. It is glimpses of humanity such as this that cements the extraordinariness of this film, even outside of its clear political and historical significance.

Of course, one might be cynical and cast aspersions on Kennedy’s motives for putting little Carrie on the phone (indeed, it even seems odd that his children should be running around his office at such a fraught time), and it would be fair to do so. Whatever Drew’s claims to absolute truth in filmmaking that is free from intervention by the filmmaker, it is clear that there will always be a degree of construction in the making of any film, fiction or non-fiction. One almost wishes that the Direct Cinema group had been a little less vocal about the ‘objectivity’ of their films, as it encourages a critical reading with a tendency to exposure of the film’s constructedness, rather than an appreciation of what is a very remarkable piece of documentary filmmaking.

Indeed, the tight narrative and crisis structure (see Mamber in Screen, 1972), although it may be reminiscent of Hollywood fiction film-making, is precisely what makes this film so gripping and watchable. Not only do we get a portrait of the Kennedy brothers and Katzenbach that is both heart-warming and humbling, but we are provided with a dramatic and tightly crafted film that ratchets up the tension with every scene until Wallace steps aside. And after that, we get Jack Kennedy’s speech, penned in 4 hours by the vaguely saintly Bobby Kennedy, a speech that resonates so very loudly and poignantly given the events of this week. I think it is important to remember that Kennedy’s speech here predates Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream…’ speech by a full 2 years. Crisis is an exceptional piece of filmmaking; tense, exhilarating and inspiring. Watch it now, before that warm, fuzzy, post-election glow dies down.

This song has to be among the most memorable semi classical songs in the history of Bollywood movies. Sahir had written the lyrics and Roshan was the music director.

Year: 1963

Director: Robert Wise

Cast:Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn, Fay Compton, Rosalie Crutchley, Lois Maxwell, Valentine Dyall, Diane Clare, and Ronald Adam

The Haunting is just that, haunting. It is not a slasher. It is not gory, It has a strong atmosphere. This is a film that relies heavily on stimulating emotions and getting those little hairs on the back of your neck to stand on end. It allows the imagination of the viewer to run wild, creating an experience that is uniquely creepy for every member of the audience.

It follows a scientist into a home that is apparently haunted. He brings a small group of people he has hand selected to the home who have had supernatural experiences in the past. Most of them take the experience in stride but one of the young participants, Eleanor Lance becomes increasingly distressed by the home. Eleanor Lance is played by Julie Harris whose performance carries this film. Claire Bloom also stands out at the only other female in the house. She comes across as simultaneously supportive to Eleanor Lance and at the same time judgmental and condescending. There also feels like there is a certain tension between the two that is enjoyable to watch.

Another element of the film that is especially impressive is the cinematography and the sound design. This is a film that utilizes the skills of a expert filmmaker to deliver the chills, not gory encounters and CGI like so many films that have been released since The Haunting was released in 1963. This is a ghost story for those who love the medium of film in the purest sense. In some respects this strength of the film may also be its weakness, since many modern audiences crave explicit content in horror films. This reviewer, relishes a film that is able to creep an audience out without simply relying one hundred percent on gore and violence.

As a side note, fans of early Bond films will enjoy Lois Maxwell (Moneypenny, from so many of the earliest Bond movies) in The Haunting, who has a key, but small role in the film.

Also, fans of the rock band White Zombie will notice a line from the film that was sampled and utilized at the beginning of the song Super-Charger Heaven on the album Astro-Creep: 2000

Listening to this Mukesh song all these years without any additional information, I thought that this song had all the attributes of a Raj kapoor song. It was sung by Mukesh, lyrics looked Shailendra like and music appeared Shankar Jaikishan like, and I was sure that the song was picturised on Raj Kapoor.

But when I finally managed to watch the video of this song, I realised that I was a bit off target. Apart from this being a Mukesh number, I was mistaken on other counts. It was written by Rajinder Krishan and music direction was by Kalyanji Anandji. This song was not picturised on Raj Kapoor, but on his younger brother, viz Shammi Kapoor. And it was not a standard sad song, rather a comedy song, despite the words in the lyrics. Or as some sophisticated critics would say, this was a song where the hero hides his sadness by laughing his sadness away. In this song, the hero is first seen singing away in the rear of a truck, and the truck driver shooes him away. Then he hitches a ride in the rear of a rickshaw, only to be pushed away by the man riding the rickshaw with his wife. Then the hero does roller skating on the road with a couple of other people, and manages to stop only by dashing against an electric pole.

In brief, this song is picturised in a light hearted manner, and so this song must be regarded as a light hearted song. But the resemblance of this song to a Raj kapoor movie song is just too uncanny, I must say.
