I know a lot of people who attended Proposition 8 protests last weekend. Time will tell how effectiv

I know a lot of people who attended Proposition 8 protests last weekend. Time will tell how effective they were, but I think it would be helpful to remember what could or could not be accomplished by them.

No protests outside of California (and arguably, not even there) were going to undo the initiative there, and certainly not directly. It’s not like the legislature can renege a public initiative based on out-of-state rally turnout. The first goal of protesters, I think, should be to show solidarity with Californian activists and encourage them for what will be a prolonged fight. Events like Saturday’s protests increase connections, brainstorming, and a sense of community, and you can be sure new plans emerged from the day.

Secondly, U.S. protesters may have been flexing their numbers in each locality, reminding their lawmakers that the issue is not dead and (depending on the state) either discouraging lawmakers from passing similar initiatives or standing in defiance of initiatives that had already passed. A distant third possibility I can’t overlook is the gathering of information. Information is just as important for political movements as it is for marketers and militaries; if and when nationwide action is needed, Saturday provided an excellent dry run AND sizable contact lists.

Compare this with the Iraq War protests in 2002 and 2003; the threat of an invasion of Iraq triggered the largest international protest ever, with one European city alone surpassing 3 million in attendance. The cities with the highest attendance were those participating in the invasion coalition and many supporting nations have reduced their participation since - but none pulled out immediately after the protests. As for the US, despite several huge rallies in Washington and other major US cities, the protests did not seem to slow the march toward war.

A colleague of mine is of the opinion that the Vietnam War might have actually ended a little sooner if protests in that era had not been so fractious and antagonizing. He is a trainer of activists and has always stressed that when the goal is to be seen and convince a national audience that you have the moral high ground, your message must be simple and consistent and your messengers must be perfectly behaved.

Of course the most effective use of rallies and protests in US history came during the Civil Rights Era, but they did not come overnight. Marches during the 60’s were only the latest steps in a long, gradual climb dating back to Rosa Parks’ bus defiance in 1955. Direct actions from sit-ins and boycotts helped spark outrage because of the violence police often used against nonviolent protesters. Doing the right thing wasn’t enough reason for many Americans until they saw the consequences on their TVs. While it would be a bit much to say organizers wished for the violence, they did plan for it rather than planning around it. In contrast, violence and suppression at marches over the last ten years or so have been much more sporadic and less extreme.

In the 60’s, boycotts were very effective locally - but again, it didn’t happen overnight. The Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted just over twelve months - no small duration for a service many people counted upon daily.

With Prop 8, there is discussion of boycott as well, but so far nothing definitive. Individual merchants have been targeted, but the scope of corporate power has altered the landscape of business since the 60’s. While a handful of household names will stick their necks out to support progress, none will allow themselves to be caught opposing it.

So would you boycott a particular company, large or small, over the politics of its founder, even if those politics are not directly related to the business at hand? Here’s a nice, juicy, complicated example:

Although the extent of the support has at times been overstated, the founder and CEO of Curves International (one Gary Heavin, with some credit also given to his wife Diane) is an outspoken ally and financial supporter of pro-life organizations. Yet his company has provided a service, helping women to live healthier lives and even develop camaraderie along the way. Kind of sticky, isn’t it? Is he all evil? All good? Somewhere in-between?

OK, so most men are off the hook on the boycott question, because most of the gyms are women-only, but here’s a further complication to keep you involved: Curves is allied with General Mills to produce cereal bars and possibly other food products bearing the Curves name.

If you are a pro-choice voter, how would/does this color your business with Curves and/or General Mills?

It’s James Bond bringing a ruckus to the ladies (who instinctively fawn over him like he’s giving off pheromones or something), and delivering some terrible puns every time he dispatches a bad guy, and watching a gypsy belly dance set piece that’s just sexy runtime filler, and brawling with an Aryan’d-out Robert Shaw in a train car, and dueling with a biplane North By Northwest style, and cruelly playing with Ms. Moneypenny’s libido, and going to the ends of the earth with pretty Russian double-agent with a heart of gold for some typewriter or something. AND it features - and I make absolutely no exaggeration here - the full orchestral arrangement of the famous James Bond theme…as Sean Connery walks into his hotel room and picks up the telephone.

And other than the Sean Connery-less first 15 minutes that just had some baddies talking about Mother Russia and stupidly incomprehensible plans for world domination and politics and other outdated Cold War shit, it was all AWESOME.

Consumers are frustrated about the discrepancy in gas prices between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids according to today’s Page 1 Gazette story.

Wouldn’t it be great to bring back the 20th century gas wars.? One station would lower its prices by a penny or two and soon most others would follow suit. Then one station would drop its prices another penny and the war was on.

In one instance, out-of-state gas companies with stations in Iowa began a war with impossibly low prices to try to shut out the competition. (A law suit was filed.)

This story ran in The Gazette Feb. 15, 1968:

Julianne Pask, Children’s and Young Adult Learning Advisor, Christchurch City Libraries share

Julianne Pask, Children’s and Young Adult Learning Advisor, Christchurch City Libraries shares her memories of visiting the library.

The first time I remember going to “the big library in town” I had trouble deciding between “The Illustrated History of Fashion through the Ages” and “Das Kapital,” (in translation of course). I wasn’t sure if I was going to be a fashion designer or a revolutionary. The fashion book was Reference Only and Marx proved too difficult after a few paragraphs – so I ended up taking home a Trixie Belden mystery. She was all the rage in the 70’s; but doesn’t seem to have stood the test of time very well.

And I haven’t become either of those lofty ideals. But of course it doesn’t matter. What mattered at the time was the excitement of the “big library.” It was very dark and lit with only the softest of lamps. It seemed so large and antiquated that it could house the secrets of the ages. All the furniture was hand crafted from solid wood and probably resides in only the best of antique dealers’ shops today. And it was such a contrast from the Woolston Community library we usually frequented. That was just a little room at the front of the building. Like all adults who return to childhood haunts, I’ve returned there since and wondered how such an ordinary room could have seemed so charming once upon a time.

But of course the charm was not the room, but the books. Compared to the glossy computer generated graphic art of today, the books of yesteryear are dull cousins, but again it was not the packaging, but the content, that mattered.

Julianne Pask with her father

To remember the library is to conjure memories of my father. It was he who most enthusiastically encouraged my library habit. Not that my mother was discouraging, she loved books too, but reading was Dad’s most passionate endeavour. He was born into the London Blitz. Like many inner city children, he and his brother were removed to the country for their safety. And like many other evacuees he found it to be a mixed blessing. When he decided, at 15 years old, he wanted to emigrate – alone – to a NZ high country station, the social worker assigned to his case remarked in her report that all his pocket money was spent on books. This habit continued once he was safely ensconced in the back blocks of Waiau and was fortunately passed onto me.

Despite his own lack of education - due to the disruption of the war - he read as much as any university student. The longest of labouring days still ended with a book and retirement found him working as President of the same Woolston Community library that we visited so frequently in my childhood.

At nearly 50, I have a literature degree, I have worked as a teacher of literature and now I am a learning advisor for the library. Just before my father died I asked him to write in my favourite fairy tale book. He’d given it to me, but never dedicated it. He wrote: To Julianne, Love from Dad.

He was a man of few words. Lucky for me he shared the words of others so readily. A gift for a lifetime.
It’s true that the sins of the fathers are visited down the generations; but the passions are also.

The Doors - “Strange Days” from Strange Days (1967)
The Doors - “People Are Strange” from Strange Days (1967)

I’m not sure how my fellow SWR-mates feel about The Doors, but I think they’re top-notch, as long as you can excuse Jim “Bozo Dionysus” Morrison’s poetic posturing. Morrison was a great singer, with a good sense of drama, a precise delivery, and a way with a holler, but as a wordsmith, the man often left something to be desired. Let’s not even think about “The End.”

But the songs! And the band! They wrote perfect little creepy pop ditties, immediate as a folk song, stuff that’d be at home on Broadway–unlike their contemporaries in Love or the Jefferson Airplane, they didn’t reach after odd baroque melodies, but wrote tunes so obvious you can’t believe you hadn’t known then already. And they played tighter and groovier than any other white rock group of the time, except for the Stones and the Stooges. And, to be perfectly honest, I like The Doors better than almost any other “psychedelic group,” including Pink Floyd or Love or even the Dead.

Following on from my Bondsploitation post, I now present a collection of trailers from hippie-themed movies. First up is a total winner:

An American Hippie In Israel (Amos Sefer, 1972)

(for a high quality 179mb .mov version, go directly here)

AAHII is an obscure Israeli film which has not yet merited an Internet Movie Database entry. In fact, it seems almost too good (or rather too beautifully awful) to be true. Could this be a faked trailer a la Machete by Roberto Rodriguez? No, apparently it’s genuine and supposedly available from Grindhouse Releasing.

Next up…

More (Barbet Schroeder, 1969)

“The” Pink Floyd provided the soundtracks to two counter-cultural Barbet Schroeder films: this and La Vallée (1972; released on LP as Obscured By Clouds). More was shot on the island of Ibiza in the days before it became an overdeveloped tourist destination. Back when it was, like, pure, man. So anyone for LSD, sun-worship, and Mimsy Farmer?

Pink Floyd were pretty ubiquitous in the apocalyptic hippie movie soundtrack field. Listen here to Roger Waters’ trademark bloodcurdler:

Zabriskie Point (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1970)

And while we’re at it, something more honestly exploitative…

Psych-Out (Richard Rush, 1968)

These are the PLEASURE LOVERS! They’ll ask for a dime with hungry eyes…but they’ll give you love - for NOTHING!

Starring Jack Nicholson and Susan Strasberg.

Peace and love.

Welcome to the Jefferson Weekend of Rock:

How did the last few days go? I hope all is well. Being the weekend I wanted this flight to be special. It will be full of great sounds of yesteryear.

We fly back to Redding, California during May 5th of 1995

5/5/95

Jefferson Starship on stage with Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, and Jack Casady:

Papa John (Marty wrote this tune dedicated to the late Papa John Creach)

The Other Side Of This Life (A Fred Neil classic done here with a Jack Casady bass-solo!)

Enjoy. Got to go rock and roll.

This email has done the rounds before, but I think it is spot on… so much so that I’m blogging it for those who haven’t seen it before. “Well done” to whoever first put it together - It’s a good ‘un!

TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s…

First, we survived being born to mothers who lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn’t open on the weekends, somehow we didn’t starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because……

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, No video/DVD films, No mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms…..

…..WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time…

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn’t have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn’t invent stupid names for their kids like ‘Kiora’ and ‘Blade’ and ‘Ridge’ and ‘Vanilla’

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Something made a sudden dawning in my mind this morning. It came on suddenly as I had a clarity about the parallels between individual social and psychological development and that of our American society.

For example, the 1950s: A time of childhood. When President Kennedy was assassinated no one believed it was a conspiracy. Never! No one could have wanted to harm him except a deluded sick individual. There was no sense of the suspicion that wracks so much of all of our political discourse today. The 1950s when roles were clearly defined as in the play of children. Mother’s were in the kitchen and fathers were at work. Everyone thought alike, loved their country, and there were no real boogy men except the communists. The naivete of that time is staggering to me, and I lived through it! Those who came after simply can have no understanding of how narrow the way of being was at that time.
Then President Kennedy was shot and the dawning of our adolescence began. Two months after President Kennedy was shot The Beatles came to the United States. I cannot help but think two things about this: that it was all destiny and perfect timing; and that if President Kennedy had not been assassinated that somehow this country and the world may not have been ready for The Beatles. Their entry upon the world stage was truly a destined part of the development of this nation. The beginnings were the innocent adolescence of crushes and record buying. Of dreaming of meeting “the ones”. This time went on and grew into something else…the turbulence of adolescence. Psychelic Beatles and psychedelic drugs. Woodstock. Peace, love, and rock and roll. Oh yes, and the sexual revolution.

In the span of a few short years we went from an idealized childhood into a crazy topsy turvy world that had in large part changed by the introduction of the birth control pill. Suddenly biology was not destiny. But this was a crazy trying on roles time. Women were thought to be more similar to men than thought. Women were assumed to want to sleep with everyone if only they were “liberated” enough to realize this. And thus women suffered under the interpretation by men of what it meant to be a free woman.

Eventually, we began to move……and move…..and move. And the culmination is the election of the first black president of the United States. We have moved into adulthood. We have reached the mountain top of our cultural evolution. We stunned ourselves and we stunned the world as we accomplished this smashing blow to all stereotypes about ourselves with one giant move. Stunning in its rapidity, its power, and its significance.

We are now into our adulthood. An early adulthood, but adulthood none the less. A time for coming into our own individuality (read diversity) and the full power of a nation whose ideals the world has long admired. The Statue OF Liberty, Ellis Island, we made it. And we are, for one shining moment, a beautiful sight to behold.

We made it.

Wallpapers were produced in many different styles, colours and design throughout the 1960s, but there was an element that spanned the decade, what we tend to refer to as psychedelic. It was a large part of both textile and wallpaper design.

There are a number of reasons for the use of this decorative style within interiors at this moment in time. Some would say that it had everything to do with the drug culture that was adopted, at least as a fashion accessory, by the young and wealthy of the era. But, although there was an element of this, it has much more to do with the decade that went before it.

The 1950s interior tended to follow the design rules set out by mid-century Modernism. Colour schemes tended towards the muted earth tones, furniture was light and minimal and the overall effect was one of clean, clutter free elegance. But the 1960s, however, this interior style had begun to look a little staid and was becoming associated with an older lifestyle.

Most twentieth century decades seemed keen on setting their own parameters, making them unique from the previous and following decades. Although these trends tended to be set by fashion and the need to consume, there was an element of iconoclasm, whereby one set of designers would rip up the design work of the previous decade in order to set up their own style system.

Designers of the 1960s were well aware of the Modernist influence on interiors that had been running through the twentieth century, from its very beginnings. They saw the need to expand the inspiration roots of interior decoration and design to avoid stagnation. More importantly, many of the new generation of textile and wallpaper designers were extremely young, many were straight out of college. Most felt that interiors should be able to reflect their generation and their lifestyle. They felt the need to move away from interior schemes that were now associated with their parents.

There was a certain amount of perverseness in the decorative style that they chose as one of their main areas of inspiration and influence. If a design movement or era could be chosen that was an anathema to Modernism and everything it stood for, then that era had to be Art Nouveau.

Some designers copied Art Nouveau design work and merely changed the colour scheme. Others tried to follow the ideas behind the style, namely the free flowing spirit and asymmetrical quality of the decoration. Still others used Art Nouveau as a starting point, quickly going off on different tangents to produce work that was unique to the decade.

The vibrant colours were much more heightened than in the original Art Nouveau design work. This had much to do with trying to prove that this was not a mere regurgitation of a previous design style, but a deliberate and conscious twisting of the original work in order to produce something that was of the moment.

Psychedelia was a combination of Art Nouveau sensibilities and a modern, if sometimes perverse colour palette. This style has now become so closely associated with the decade that when we see design work that may at one point have been influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, we only see psychedelia.

This new generation of designers were able to produce a genuine new decorative style that belonged solely to the 1960s.
