After leaving MGM where she reigned as the biggest star on the lot Joan Crawford signed a contract with Warner Brothers and had series of hits that rank up there with her best from MGM, “Humoresque”, “Possessed” (1947), her Academy Award winning role in “Mildred Pierce.” While under contract to Warner’s she was loaned out to 20th Century Fox for “Daisy Kenyon”. Kenyon has been called a woman’s picture, a melodrama and a film noir. Though released on DVD by 20th Century Fox as part of its film noir series this is misleading. The movie, while it may contain some noirsh style lighting, that may have more to do with Ms. Crawford being too old for the part with the dark shadowy lighting used to cover up the effects of her fortyish age. Either way, Joan was still at the top and could command leading men of status like Dana Andrews and Henry Fonda to be her co-stars.

Here Crawford was given two of the top male stars of the time to co-star with, Preminger favorite Dana Andrews who had appeared in at least five Preminger films and Henry Fonda. Billed third behind Andrews, which may be surprising to some, Fonda, just back from the Army was at the tail end of his studio contract and was ready to go out on his own. Andrews was a big star and on a roll during this period having just appeared in “Boomerang”, “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “A Walk in the Sun.” “Daisy Kenyon” is the story of a young commercial artist who is having an adulterous affair with big time lawyer Dan O’Mara (Andrews). O’Mara always got everything he wanted. He never lost a case; he had a family with two young daughters who love him and a beautiful mistress. Daisy wants to get married however, the smooth talking O’Mara strings her along never committing. Daisy meets psychologically disturbed war veteran Peter Lapham (Fonda). After a single date he professes his love for Daisy. When Daisy rejects his proposal, he just disappears. Later on, realizing Dan is not going to divorce his wife (Ruth Warwick) marries Peter though she still in love with Dan. O’Mara however, cannot get over Daisy and after losing a case for the first time, where he was defending a Japanese-American war veteran who came home to find his property taken away from him, he makes the decision to divorce his wife and come after the now married Daisy.

Preminger who was at the height of his career in the 1940’s through the 1950’s does a nice job of keeping the suspense up on whom Daisy will decide on until the very end. From what I have read, Preminger did not think much of the final results of the film.

Of the three leading characters, Crawford’s Daisy is probably the least interesting though as usual, she plays a strong female character and her presence alone is powerful. Fonda’s character is a bit of an oddity, as is the pairing of Crawford and Fonda in general. There does not seem to be any chemistry between them making their scenes together disappointing. Dana Andrews gives a fine performance as Dan, going from a smart over confident self centered charmer to a man who suddenly realizes he is losing everything. You can see the confidence drain from Andrews face as his fortunes decline. A really nice performance, the most successful in the film though his character is not very likeable.

There are also problems with the script. Dan’s relationship with his children seems like it needed to be explored more. Similar is the relationship between Daisy and her friend Martha (Mary Angelus) who always seems to be hanging around Daisy’s apartment making you wonder if there is more to their relationship than is being said.

Look for cameo appearances by John Garfield, writer Damon Runyon and newspapermen Leonard Lyons and Walter Winchell in the Stork Club scene. The film was written by David Hertz was based on a novel by Elizabeth Janeway. As an aside, Elizabeth Janeway was married to Elliot Janeway who was economic advisor to Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and later to Lyndon B. Johnson.

Filmen indeholder mange flere forgreninger.

Man må gennem toiletdøren. Tæsk af marineinfanterist. Død med spejl i opsprættet mave. – Hak -. Marinesoldat. Spejl i mave.

WASP- virkeligheden

Lyset findes, tilskuerne lever under Lucifers orden.

Men jo mere, man giver slip, jo klogere bliver man - siger Anger.

.
1) O Parmera:

Quatro vezes. No cu dela.

.

2) A Putana:

In 1900, India was part of the British Empire; but by the end of 1947, India had achieved independence.

For most of the Nineteenth Century, India was ruled by the British. India was considered the jewel in the crown of the British Empire. Queen Victoria had been made Empress of India and the British had a major military presence in India.

Indian nationals had no say in central government and even at a local level, their influence on policy and decision making was minimal.

In 1885, educated middle class nationals had founded the Indian National Conference (INC). Their aim was to get a much greater say in the way India was governed.

In response to this development, the Morley-Minto reforms were introduced in 1909. Morley was the Secretary of State for India and Lord Morley was Viceroy of India. Their reforms lead to each province in India having its own governor and Indian nationals were allowed to sit on the councils which advised these governors.

After 1918, nationalism within India intensified. This was probably due to 2 reasons:

1. Many educated nationals in India were far from satisfied with the Morley-Minto reforms. White Englishmen still dominated India and there had been no real decrease in their power or increase in national power. The INC (Indian National Council) wanted a lot more.

2. Woodrow Wilson had stimulated the minds of many people with his belief in national self-determination – i.e. that people from a country had a right to govern themselves. The whole concept of national self-determination undermined the basic idea of the British Empire – that the British governed this empire (or people appointed by the British to do the same). For national self-determination to fully work, India would have to be governed by the Indians living there.

With the arrival of the cold weather I have heard predictions of a hard winter to come and I thought

With the arrival of the cold weather I have heard predictions of a hard winter to come and I thought back to the winter of 1947. No doubt the adults viewed it in a different light from us, but to us it was a magical time, deep snow for weeks on end and extra days off school when the boiler broke down, the pipes froze or there was no coke to stoke the boiler! When we were at school I remember having to break the ice on our free bottles of milk. On the days off we would take our sledge to the forest and toboggan up and down the slopes and have snowball fights. I was quite spoilt as I was the only girl in my brother’s gang as well as being the youngest. I unashamedly played on this and would have four little boys pulling me on the sledge, while I was cosily wrapped in the snow suit my mother had made me from her old fur coat.

This was soon after the war and rationing was still in force and even coal was rationed though we were more fortunate than some as my father worked for the colliery and we had the miners allowance plus a load of logs, sent to us by a relative in the country to supplement our fuel.

Power cuts did not affect us as much as they would nowadays as there was no TV and we had few electric gadgets and few homes had central heating. We had one coal fire in the living room and this was part of a range which had an oven on one side and a boiler on the other. There was no heating upstairs unless we were ill and then a fire was lit in the small fireplace, the rest of the time we got undressed very quickly and snuggled under extra blankets and a huge fluffy eiderdown.

We had lots of homemade soup, stews, apples, pears and bottled fruit preserved from the summer. We also had a daily dose of cod liver oil and malt, so stayed pretty healthy despite the weather, so all in all we children had a wonderful winter!

1947 started with a nightmare. A creature grabbed hold of me, keeping hold of me by force, “I have something I must give you.”

The creature engulfed me. I could not breath, though I fought to scream. I could not move, though I tried my hardest. It had me in its clutches and refused to let go.

I woke with a jolt, taking a deep breath but I did not scream. I’m just not a screamer because this nightmare should have done just that. My fight or flight response was off the chart, yet I lay there trying to forget the creature.

The clock read just after three, I’d hardly been asleep for an hour. I put my head back on the pillow but could not close my eyes. Each time I did, I was suffocating again. Thirty minutes was enough and I was out of bed, sitting at my computer trying to ignore the creepy crawls that were still with me as well.

I am plagued by nightmares. For as long as I can remember I’ve always had them, which is funny in itself because it takes a lot to scare me. I will admit that my creature visit did it. It’s been almost a month and I still shudder at the thought of it.

The questions I asked myself from the moment it spoke was, “What did it give me, or try to?”

The next morning I received my answer.

I’d gone to bed early, since thanks to my nighttime visitor, I was a little on the tired side. I’d fallen asleep easy, also very rare for me. And I’d dreamt, which I always do. This was different somehow. Very clear, each word, each scene, each person.

“She stole the money.” People kept whispering.

“You have to go home,” said the honey-haired man in the army uniform.

The woman with auburn hair sat on the dock fishing. I saw the coast and saw her travel. I saw the story and the people in it. I saw 1947.

So, I woke that morning and sat at the computer, this time not sending a 4 am email about the creature to my poor sister, but to write out Maddy’s story. Maddy was the woman sitting on the dock and I could see her, and the creature wanted me to tell everyone about her.

I do hope that if the creature wants to give me more stories, that it does so in a better way, but as long as they are stories like Maddy’s I will take them however it wants to give them.

Coloradoan says Republicans so far outnumber Democrats in early voting here in Larimer County. “Corridors leading to the early voting site at the county courthouse, 200 W. Oak St., were busy all day,” it reads.

This calls for a visual metaphor:

This 1947 photo shows elephants marching from the train on Mason Street to the Circus at City Park. See the familiar stone wall that marks the entrance to City Park at right?

So you see, elephants on Oak Street are nothing new.

(Quelle siehe unten, The Guardian.)

“Mandelson was more blunt as he warned of the impact of the recession. “We are facing an unparalleled financial crisis,” he said during a visit to Moscow. “I don’t think yet people have realised what the impact is going to be on our real economy.”"
Quelle.

It’s equal to 138m bottles of 1947 Petrus Pomerol, the bankers’ favourite vintage.”

Kashmir Black Day, the annual commemoration of the landing of Indian security forces in Srinagar

Kashmir Black Day, the annual commemoration of the landing of Indian security forces in Srinagar on Oct. 27, 1947, is being observed to highlight the plight of Kashmiris caused by India’s deployment of 700,000 troops in the valley. Thousands of its inhabitants had been martyred. The Jammu and Kashmir dispute is one of the oldest unresolved issues of the world and one that has always remained a top priority for the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM).

ABIM reaffirms full solidarity and support with the Kashmiri people in their legitimate struggle for self-determination through peaceful means and in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. We appreciate the commitment made for an early, peaceful and negotiated settlement of this dispute by Pakistan and hope that India demonstrates the same determination in order to give the peace process a significant push.

India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir is a dark chapter in the history of human rights. A continued denial of the right to self-determination to the Kashmiri people is morally unacceptable, economically unsustainable and politically inadmissible with regard to any scheme aimed at ensuring global and regional peace, stability and security. Kashmir can never be resolved without the participation and consensus of the people of Kashmir. Contrary to prevailing mythology, Kashmir is not merely a border quarrel between India and Pakistan. Its central concern is the self-determination and human rights of the Kashmiri people that have been scorned, mocked, and trampled on for more than 60 years.

The chilling suffering and misery of the Kashmiri people continues every day a peaceful resolution is deferred. We believe that the way to a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue lies in tripartite negotiations between India, Pakistan and the accredited leadership of the people of Jammu & Kashmir from both sides of the Cease-fire Line.

ABIM, together with Global Peace Malaysia, friends and sympathizers of the Kashmir cause in Malaysia and the region will be organizing a “Kashmir Black Day” in solidarity with the oppressed of Jammu & Kashmir people. Their sufferings over the past six decades will be highlighted during mini exhibitions and speeches planned to mark the day.

of the Macedonian Minority in Greece

July, 2008

Dushan Sinadinoski

The modern Greek folly has always been its persistent but reckless denial of the existence of a Macedonian nationality. The hysteric intolerance against ethnic Macedonians has distorted the Greek collective consciousness so much that Greeks are no longer capable of differentiating between their wish that Macedonians were truly nonexistent and the actual Macedonian reality, which so defiantly confronts them.

As their Macedonian phobia continues to feed their schizophrenic psyches, rather than dealing with the Macedonian reality like rational people, they instead cry out for sympathy and comfort while hoping to be freed from their Macedonian nightmare, just like a small child who has awakened from a bad dream and cries out to his parents for comfort.

Such was the case in 1947 when the Greek government protested to the United Nations’ Security Council regarding border violations by its northern neighbors. Greece demanded that Yugoslavia cease and desist overt military and logistical aid to the guerrillas fighting in the Greek Civil War, many of whom were ethnic Macedonians.

On December 19 1946, a Commission of Investigating was established by the United Nations pursuant to the resolution of the Security Council to examine alleged Greek frontier incidents. To the surprise and dismay of the Greek government, the Commission of Inquiry broadened its scope of investigation to include the treatment of minorities, tendentious misstatements of facts in press and radio, activities of foreign military and police missions in the four countries concerned and arraignments of free port or free zone facilities in Salonika.

Outraged by the Commission’s expanded mission, Greece threatened the immediate execution of political prisoners and captured “bandits” unless the Commission narrowed its scope of investigating to the original request. However, after heavy arm-twisting by the United States the Greek government halted the executions and allowed the Commission to proceed without further impediment.

The United States was concerned that if Greece carried out the execution of the Macedonians world opinion would turn against Greece, which would give Yugoslavia, supported by the Soviets, a pretext to invade and detach Aegean Macedonia from Greece. In order to save face, and perhaps their country, Greek Ambassador, Dendramis, was instructed by the United States to inform the Security Council that Greece’s protest was filed merely so there could be no grounds for misunderstanding regarding the interpretation of the terms of reference” (Telegram from Secretary of State to the US Embassy in Greece, February 8, 1947).

The United States understood that if Greece continued on its reckless political course it was only a matter of weeks before it fell to the Soviet block. Therefore, such a communist scenario for the future of Greece had to be prevented from becoming a reality.

Once the Commission began its work, the investigation of the Greek border incidents was downgraded as a minor issue. Such incidents, as the Commission contended, were regular occurrences in the Balkans for centuries and this issue in itself did not warrant an investigation at the United Nations level.

But the United States and Britain used this issue as a pretext to counterbalance Soviet expansion to the Balkans by preserving Greek territorial integrity. Britain and the Unites States were convinced that Yugoslavia wanted to detach the Aegean and Pirin parts of Macedonia from Greece and Bulgaria respectively and create an autonomous Macedonian state within the Yugoslav Federation.

Thus in the midst of this global political drama, the Macedonian issue again took center stage. But the ensuing colossal political battle between East and West instantly relegated Greece and Macedonia to the sidelines as spectators of their own destiny. The political drama was moved from the bloody foothills in Greece to the stately halls in Geneva. There, the ideological demarcation line between East and West was drawn alongside the Greek-Macedonian border, and as a result Greece and Macedonia continued their bitter rivalry on opposite sides of each other.

Nonetheless, the Commission’s investigation was not interrupted and it was able to gather first hand information on the issues in question. However, before the findings were officially published, Commission representatives regularly communicated their findings to their respective governments for further evaluation and for instructions by their foreign affairs departments.

In one instance, the US Commission representative, Mark Ethridge, on May 8, 1947, sent a secret telegram to US Secretary of State, Marshall, informing him that “Greece itself by its own short sighted attitude and by its discriminatory and gangster-like methods was providing grist for the mill of political indoctrination and training in northern countries. It is noteworthy that a very large proportion of the refugees from Greece are Slavo-Macedonians who bore the brunt of discrimination. It seems clear to me that unless the discriminatory treatment stops flight to the mountains or across the borders will not stop. Thus this is the interrelation between nature and the causes and conclusion that Greece’s discrimination has caused thousands to flee.”

This short but revealing passage summarizes the entire political landscape in Aegean Macedonia and accurately depicts the state of the Macedonian minority in Greece. It is also evident that the American diplomat clearly acknowledges the existence of the Macedonian minority in Greece and he leaves no room for questioning which minority he is referring to. Additionally, he doesn’t hide the fact that Greece’s domestic policy is the root cause of the plight of refugees and the discrimination against the Macedonian minority.

Ever conspiring and manipulating, Greece could not admit to the world it could be guilty of the most notorious crimes against the Macedonian minority. Greece wanted the free and democratic world to believe that the existence of the Macedonian minority, the plight of the Macedonian refugees and the execution of the Macedonian political prisoners were fallacious charges because Greece denied them. To further cover up their mess, Greece shifted the blame on Yugoslavia for stirring up trouble in Greece.

In their support, Greece offered to the Commission as evidence quotes from speeches of Yugoslav and Bulgarian statesmen from articles in the press, which to the Greeks meant unequivocal proof that Yugoslavia agitated a separate Macedonian state within the Yugoslav Federation and thus exploited the aspiration of Macedonians in Greece for an autonomous Macedonia. Thus it seems Greeks wanted to simultaneously claim both the non-existence of the Macedonian minority and blame Yugoslavia for fermenting dissatisfaction and disturbances among the Macedonians in Greece. This can’t be true in any world, not even in a Venizelos’ Greek-a-polis.

Based on its findings, the Commission’s conclusions clearly and unequivocally put the blame on Greece for a policy of systematic discrimination and persecution of the Macedonian minority in that country. Even though Macedonians in Greece were not the primary goal of the Commission, some of its conclusions undeniably confirmed the existence of a Macedonian minority:

1) It was pointed out to the Commission and not disputed that after the Varkiza agreement over 20,000 Greek citizens had fled into Yugoslavia either directly or through Albania or Bulgaria and approximately 5,000 into Bulgaria, a substantial proportion in each case being of Slavo-Macedonian origin. Evidence was also presented in support of the charge that Greece has sanctioned persecution of its Slavo-Macedonian minorities. Furthermore, the Commission heard testimony that the Slavic dialect spoken by Slavo-Macedonians who were believed to comprise about 85,000 people was not taught in schools and that in certain areas, use of this dialect was prohibited.” These findings by the Commission were so compelling in their condemnation of the Greek state that they left no room for doubt.

2) The Commission is of the opinion that as long as such discriminatory treatment continues, there will be unrest and discontent on the part of the Slavic minority in Greek Macedonia, which will provide fertile breeding ground for a separatist movement.

3) In connection with the present situation, the Greek Commission was presented with a body of evidence in support of the charges that responsibility for the situation lay with Greek domestic policy… This evidence was in effect that opposition political groups in Greece were persecuted by Greek gendarmerie and right-wing bandits, and that the civil rights of the Macedonian and Chamuriot minorities have been restricted

4) The Commission also received sufficient evidence to warrant a conclusion that immediately after the liberation of Greece, the small Slav speaking and Chamuriot minority in Greco-Macedonia and Epirus had been victims of retaliatory excesses, and Chamuriot minority had actually fled en masse from the country. As regards treatment of minorities, the Greek government asserted the acts in question were committed before it established control in the areas concerned, and that many members of these minority groups had collaborated with Axis occupying forces during war

Considering that these conclusions were unintended consequences, the findings of the Commission reveal disturbing and undeniable evidence of an official Greek policy of persecution and discrimination against the Macedonian minority. These accusations against the Greek state in 1947 were not “dreamed” up. They were findings by the United Nations Commission of Investigating and were consistent with the facts on the ground. These findings speak loudly and plainly to the world that the Greek denial of the Macedonian minority transcends all rationality. Indeed, this denial has become a Greek national blasphemy.

The Greek national obsession with the Macedonian issue continues to regenerate itself as a persistent and bloody hatred that is no longer capable of self-control. Greece has gone wrong on the Macedonian issue and Greek society cannot be expected to find a cure for its anti-Macedonian paranoia. It’s time for the international community to call upon Greece and help this nation transcend the bounds of its delusional fascination with the Megale Idea.

The report of Commission of Investigation was signed at Geneva on May 23, 1947. The conclusions were subscribed by Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Columbia, Syria, United Kingdom and the United States. The delegations of Soviet Union and Poland did not approve the conclusions and the French delegation abstained. The United Nations has published the Commission’s report in Official Records of the Security Council, Second Year, Special Supplement No. 2.

Ok, so not a cookbook. I know. But I recently found this at a thrift store and couldn’t pass it up.

This is a “booklet” offered by The International Harvester Company teaching you how to freeze food - a novel concept in 1947 for sure. Not bad advice, just outdated now somewhat. No vacuum sealing for instance. Or thawing in the microwave.

What really impressed me about the book though was the amount of color on every page. Just loaded with color everywhere! I mean look at the front and back covers:

This book is 6 inches wide by 9 inches long and 62 pages long.

I wanted to show this page just because of the kitchen. Its hard to see without actually looking at the book but those are linoleum counters, of course. I love the steel cabinets.

This page highlights the EXACT scientific nature of what is present in the book and that is all indeed safe. Lots of reassurances around.

I thought the packing materials (and the use of an iron to seal a bag) was interesting here. Cartons and plastic bags…hello freezer burn! Interesting enough I didn’t see one mention of freezer burn in the entire booklet. Not one mention.

Good advice for freezing a few veggies and a bizarre fruit salad picture.

Good advice that still stands…except there is advice for slaughtering your own animals. Love the “aging” advice. Why do you think Omaha Steaks are so good?

Some generally good advice on freezing game and dairy products. Only one line intrigued me. Second paragraph at the top: the freezing and storage of game meat is restricted in many states and you should familiarize yourself with these state laws in the locality where you live and hunt. I wonder if that is still the case? I am not familiar with that information at all, in history or in life so I have no idea. But it intrigued me completely. I’ve only lived in states where they basically encourage you to hunt down the local wildlife so I have no concept of not storing something that we just killed. I think its time for me to do some research just for the heck of it.

More wonderful, and time tested, advice on freezing dough, cake and cookies. My only amendment would be that you CAN keep unbaked dough frozen for longer than a week, unlike what the book says. But like a lot of things, it does taste better the less time it is frozen.
