Ah Marilyne Monroe, ah les années 1930 à 1960 : l’époque bénie de la lingerie sexy et très provocante sans être pour autant vulgaire, contrairement à aujourd’hui ou le string et le pantalon taille basse est de rigueur, sombrant toujours un peu plus dans la vulgarité… perso, j’ai jamais aimé, même si je porte des string de temps en temps sur mes photos, j’ai une nette préférence pour les culottes type 1950 ; c’est super sexy surtout avec un bustier ou un corset et les portes-jarretelles qui vont avec.

Una vez agotado el ámbito de la alimentación, el libro aborda otro de los aspectos fundamentales para las personas de la época: ¿dónde dormir? La vivienda, y más en concreto las dificultades económicas de los desempleados para costearse una, es la cuestión que trata Díez Espinosa en el último epígrafe de este tercer capítulo. Así nos narra el autor las dificultades de algunos personajes de El día del juicio en torno a esta cuestión: “Además, los Trent no eran los únicos inquilinos que habían dejado de pagarle la renta. También los O´Connell, del tercer piso, estaban en dificultades y llevaban ya tres meses sin pagar un centavo a Lonigan. El señor O´Connell había sido siempre un hombre serio y puntual en los pagos, pero las cosas iban mal en sus negocios y había perdido casi todos sus bienes (…) Por ingrata que fuera la decisión, Martin Lonigan debía comunicar a los Trent y a los O´Connell que abandonaran inmediatamente el inmueble”.

Las páginas dedicadas al “¿dónde dormir?” están divididas en tres apartados: Entre el desahucio y el hacinamiento; La arquitectura del desempleo: colonias, campamentos y hoovervilles; y Las rutas de los sin techo. En el segundo de ellos encontramos un cuadro de George Orwell con algunas anotaciones relativas a viviendas del norte de Inglaterra. En concreto son los hogares que se describen son los siguientes: casa en Greenough´s Row (Wigan), casa en la calle Peel (Barnsley), casa en Thomas Street (Sheffield), y casa en Mapplewell (pequeño pueblo minero). En el epígrafe dedicado a los sin techo encontramos una fotografía con el siguiente pie de foto: “Una cuerda garantiza la estabilidad y el descanso nocturno de los desempleados”. En ella podemos ver a cinco hombres dormidos cuyas respectivas cabezas descansan, dependiendo del caso, en el hombro de un compañero o en una cuerda.

En el ámbito literario, hemos de destacar las referencias a El día del juicio, de James T. Farrell; El camino a Wigan Pier y Sin blanca en París y Londres, de George Orwell; Adios a Berlín, de Christopher Isherwood; ¿Y ahora qué?, de Hans Fallada; La peste parda. Viaje por la Alemania nazi, de Daniel Guérin; La muchacha de seda artificial, de Irmgard Keun; Las uvas de la ira, de John Steinbeck; Los buenos camaradas, de John Boynton Priestley; y Waiting for Nothing, de Tom Kromer. Tras esta enumeración de obras y autores, coincidirán conmigo en calificar de sorprendente el control que el autor tiene sobre el mundo de la novela de entreguerras. Sin embargo, la riqueza documental de estas páginas no termina ahí: abundan las referencias a estudios teóricos y a obras cinematográficas. Dentro del primer grupo nos encontramos con The Tenant Movemente in New Cork City 1904-1984, trabajo de R. Lawson publicado en Rutgers University Press; The Tenements of Chicago 1908-1935, de Edith Abbot y Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge para la University of Chicago Press; La Gran Depresión, de Jen Heffer; La crise des societés impériales. Allemagne, France, Grande-Bretagne 1900-1940 de Christophe Charle; Von drei Millionen drei; y La democracia en Alemania. Historia y perspectivas. En lo que se refiere al cine, cabe destacar Our Daily Bread de King Vidor, y Kuhle Wampe de Slatan Dudow.

This email has done the rounds before, but I think it is spot on… so much so that I’m blogging it for those who haven’t seen it before. “Well done” to whoever first put it together - It’s a good ‘un!

TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s…

First, we survived being born to mothers who lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn’t open on the weekends, somehow we didn’t starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because……

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, No video/DVD films, No mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms…..

…..WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time…

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn’t have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn’t invent stupid names for their kids like ‘Kiora’ and ‘Blade’ and ‘Ridge’ and ‘Vanilla’

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Another piece of music I am pleased to say I will be preforming with The Evergreen Chamber Orchestra later this month is The Rodrigo Guitar Concerto. Not only is it a fantastic work, but the soloist playing with us is out of this world. 

We are playing with Masakazu Ito. I would be lying if I said I knew who this was before being informed he was the soloist, but he came to our last rehearsal and ran the concerto with us, and he was phenomenal… beyond words really. I could regurgitate the information about Masakazu that I found on his website, but I think that would be silly.All I really know is that I feel privileged to be able to play in a concert with him.

The Concierto de Aranjuez is also something I was previously unfamiliar with, although I did recognize the melody from the first movement immediately.

Joaquín Rodrigo Vidre, was a composer and virtuoso pianist of the 20th century (He was born in 1901 and died in july of 1999). He lost his sight when he was three years old after being infected with diphtheria, but went on to study piano, and violn when he was eight and started composing by the time he was sixteen. Suprisingly, although he is known for revolutionizing the classical guitar with his compositions, he never learned the instrument himself.

Rodrigo wrote the Concierto de Aranjuez for the gardens of Palacio Real de Aranjuez, which was origionally built for the king of Spain during the rule of Philip the 2nd. The piece is meant to inspire in the listener the beauty of the immense gardens surrounding the palace. Rodrigo said of the concerto himself that it captured ”the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds and the gushing of fountains”. He dedicated the work to Regino Sainz de la Maza, a notable guitarist at the time, and Regino played the guitar at the premiere of the work in Barcelona in 1940. It is a rarity that classical is preformed with a full orchestra as accompaniment, but surprisingly in my experience playing with Masakazu Ito, the Guitar is always very audible and prominent.

The Concerto is written in three movements. The Allegro con spirito, the first movement is fast and spirited, and probably my favorite of the three. The second movement, the Adagio, is the slowest of the three and also the most famous. The last movement, Allegro gentile, is also fast and I would say triumphant. Apparently many people feel that the second movement was in response to a bombing in Guernica in 1937 (around the time Rodrigo wrote the concerto). Rodrigo never admitted that this was the case and his wife maintains that the moment was inspired by his happy feelings of their honeymoon and his great despair at the miscarriage of their first baby. Either way the movement evokes feelings of remorse and joy throughout.

En los primeros años veinte trabajó en el Komintern y a partir de 1924 regresó a a Hungría para organizar en la clandestinidad el Partido Comunista, pero un año más tarde fue encarcelado. Una vez en libertad, en 1940, viajó a la Unión Soviética para ponerse al frente de los comunistas húngaros. Al regresar a Hungría en 1944 como persona de confianza de Stalin fue hasta 1956 el máximo dirigente del Partido Comunista húngaro; entre 1952 y 1953 desempeñó el encargo de Primer Ministro. Abandonó Hungría durante la insurrección del otoño de 1956 y murió en Moscú en 1971.

When the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was first opened in July of 1940 (after nearly 2 years of construction), it was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.  Spanning the Tacoma Narrows, the bridge was nearly a mile long and its roadway rested nearly 200 feet above the surface of the water.  It was considered to be an engineering marvel, but this bridge also had a quirk…it liked to wiggle.

Believe it or not, all bridges wiggle a little…they can’t help it.  As structures that are always exposed to the wind, often subjected to moving water beneath them, and usually pushed on by lots of traffic, bridges have a certain about of “give” in them.  There’s a bridge near our home that’s a mile long called, not surprisingly, the Mile-Long Bridge (pictured here during this year’s flood with water that’s about 50′ higher than normal) and, when crossing it on especially windy days, you get the sensation of lateral motion.

But the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was different, as it’s motions could not only be felt, they could be seen.  When the wind was just right, the bridge would sway back and forth, sometimes as much as a couple feet, which quickly earned the bridge the nickname ”Galloping Gertie”.

Well, on November 7, 1940 (just 4 months after it opened), the bridge failed in spectacular fashion.  Steady winds of about 40mph were coming down the valley and the center span starting swaying.  Only this time, it didn’t calm down.  The undulations got worse and worse and, at 11:00am, the bridge collapsed.

Investigations would show that errors in the design, construction, and even painting of the bridge had all led to its demise.  Nearly every Physics class uses the bridge when studying the effects of wind, resonance, and standing waves (though those weren’t the ultimate cause of the failure).  Unfortunately, I was pretty terrible in Physics, so I don’t remember any of the technical stuff.

But what I do remember is the video that was shot of the collapse, and of the guy who was trying to cross the bridge and nearly lost his life.  As one of the most remarkable videos ever recorded, it’s an absolute must-see.

And in case you’re wondering, there’s a new bridge where the old one used to be, and it’s way stronger than the first one.  It may wiggle a little, but having driven over it a couple times this summer, I can guarantee you it doesn’t shake like the first one.

Foi celebrante o rev. Prior desta vila sr. Porfírio Alves, que no final dirigiu aos noivos uma tocante alocução alusiva ao acto, tendo celebrado a missa o rev. Pároco da freguesia da Junqueira, sr. Padre António José da Costa.

Serviram de padrinhos, por parte da noiva, seus tios, a sra. D. Ana Ferreira Ribera e o sr. José Ribera, industrial na Senhora da Hora, e por parte do noivo, sua mãe, a sra. Delfina Gonçalves Cunha e o sr. José Dias de Araújo, negociante em Gaia.

Aos noivos, que seguiram para o sul em viagem de núpcias, desejamos uma perene lua de mel.

Foi a primeira vez nesta freguesia que se realizou uma Missão. Os sermões, três por dia, estiveram a cargo do ver. Frei Gil Alferes, dominicano muito ilustre que deixou nesta terra as mais gratas impressões.

Versou nas suas interessantes palestras os assuntos mais variados e palpitantes, quer sob os aspectos religioso e moral, quer social. A concorrência foi muito numerosa, havendo dias em que o vasto templo era pequeno para conter a enorme multidão desta freguesia e das vizinhas. A doutrina por aquele sacerdote expendida era para todos salutar, quer fossem religiosos ou não. Não fazia mal a ninguém ouvi-la… e segui-la.

Até para os inteligentes e falsos protectores dos pobres, que tem sempre os lábios abertos para os defender, mas sempre a sua bolsa fechada para os socorrer nas suas necessidades, até a esses fazia bem banharem-se naquelas verdadeiras doutrinas sociais, tão clara e sinceramente expendidas. A festa terminou com uma tocante comunhão solene, tendo o menino Orlando da Costa Pinto Ferreira pronunciado um lindo discurso dedicado aos seus companheiros e ao povo da freguesia, e a menina Adília Ferreira Lopes da Costa, pronunciando uma comovente prece a Nossa Senhora de Fátima.

- Retirou na quinta-feira desta freguesia, acompanhado de sua esposa e filhinha, o nosso amigo sr. António Patrício, devendo embarcar em Lisboa, num dos próximos dias com destino a Benguela onde vai continuar a exercer a sua actividade comercial. Boa viagem lhe desejamos e muitas felicidades.

- Realiza-se no dia 12 do próximo mês de Dezembro um dos actos mais importantes da vida portuguesa, o recenseamento da sua população e a respectiva inquirição das suas condições de vida e de trabalho, etc. Há toda a conveniência que esse trabalho seja feito com a maior perfeição e verdade, e, para isso, seria conveniente, para evitar erradas interpretações, que o preenchimento dos boletins obedecesse a um critério uniforme, quer na classificação das profissões quer na classificação de analfabetos, título que a nosso ver devia ser dado em menores de oito anos ou pelo menos de sete anos.

Com 66 anos de idade, faleceu em Agarez, Vila Real, a sra. D. Maria Pires Bouça Quinteira, mãe do nosso querido amigo sr. José Quinteira, comerciante na freguesia da Junqueira.

Na próxima 6.ª feira, dia de Todos-Os-Santos, realizam-se na nossa igreja diversas solenidades religiosas pela alma dos mortos desta freguesia. Da parte da tarde, haverá naquele templo exéquias e sermão, e no fim sairá uma procissão ao cemitério.

- Recomeçaram as carreiras de camionetas desta freguesia para o Porto às segundas, terças, quintas e sábados. O lugar da partida é no Padrão, às 7,5 horas da manhã, Às segundas e sábado partirá também do mesmo lugar uma camioneta ao meio dia e vinte minutos em igual destino. Estas carreiras, cujo proprietário é o sr. Agostinho de Lino, constituem uma notável comodidade para esta freguesia e freguesias vizinhas.

- Continua a experimentar melhoras a senhora D. Guilhermina Ferreira Campos, esposa do sr. José Baptista da Costa, presidente da Junta desta freguesia, que há tempo, como então noticiamos, foi vítima de um grave desastre.

Junqueira, 9 de Outubro (Atrasada na Redacção)

Estão em pleno e regular funcionamento os dois lugares da escola masculina desta freguesia. Nesses dois lugares já estão matriculadas perto de 100 crianças. O professor do segundo lugar é o sr. Elias Lopes Cardoso, que em Macieira, donde veio transferido a seu pedido, era muito estimado.

- Tem experimentado sensíveis melhoras, o que muito estimamos, p sr. Manuel Ferreira Amorim, tesoureiro da Junta desta freguesia.

- Já retirou para essa vila, depois de aqui passar uma temporada, o sr. Humberto Ferreira e família.

- As vindimas já há dias que estão terminadas. Ano verdadeiramente escasso, pois até para consumo próprio não têm os lavradores ensachas para grandes liberalidades.

- Retiraram para os respectivos colégios e outros estabelecimentos de ensino secundário e superior os diversos estudantes desta freguesia. Fazemos votos porque todos colham no presente ano lectivo os mais fecundos resultados nos seus estudos.

- Nessa vila casou-se há dias o nosso conterrâneo e amigo sr. José Lopes da Silva Félix com a menina Maria da Piedade Lopes de Oliveira. Embora tarde, enviamos-lhe os nossos parabéns, com os desejos muito sinceros de que tenham uma infindável lua de mel.

- Em Casal de Pedro, populoso lugar desta freguesia, faleceu ontem, realizando-se hoje, com muita concorrência, o seu funeral, a sra. Rosa da Silva, que contava 89 anos de idade. A seu filho, sr. Domingos Lopes Faria, enviamos os nossos sentidos pêsames.

The New York State Pavilion was constructed for the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Designed by architect Philip Johnson (born 1906), the “Tent of Tomorrow” measures 350 feet by 250 feet, with sixteen 100-foot columns suspending a 50,000 square-foot roof of multi-colored panels. The popular exhibit for the state of New York also held three towers, measuring 60 feet, 150 feet, and 226 feet. The two shorter towers held cafeterias for the fair, and the tallest tower, as the highest point of the fair, held an observation deck. Fair visitors ascended the towers in the “Sky Streak” capsule elevators.

I hate that it’s abandoned.  I love historic places like this and I think it’s such a shame to be left to decay like this!

You may remember in the 1997 film Men in Black, the observatory towers are revealed to contain the ships used by the first extra-terrestrials to visit Earth. The World’s Fair was organized to cover up the evidence of their landing (”Why else would they hold it in Queens?” says Agent K).

The last place we visited was Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, along the Queens side of the East River where we got a nice great at the NYC skyline.

Junqueira, 27 de Agosto

Foram hoje apresentados à vacinação anti-rábica, que se realizou no lugar da Senhora da Graça, 148 cães pertencentes a vários proprietários desta freguesia.

- O novo processo de casamento suscitou dúvidas e hesitações na Junta desta freguesia por causa das normas a seguir nos atestados que para esse fim tem de passar.

Vários interessados aguardam que lhes sejam passados esses atestados, motivos porque o sr. Presidente da Junta oficiou ao exmo. Sr. Conservador do Registo Civil pedindo esclarecimentos acerca desses documentos.

- Faleceu a sra. Rosa da Costa Souto, mãe do sr. Joaquim da Costa Souto e que contava 74 anos de idade. Pêsames. - C.

Εκδήλωση μνήμης για τον πόλεμο του 1940-41 και την Εθνική Αντίσταση πραγματοποίησε ο Σύλλογος «Πέτρινα Χρόνια», η Νομαρχία Αχαΐας και ο Δήμος Μεσσάτιδος στο Λύκειο Δεμενίκων, την Τετάρτη το απόγευμα στις 15  Οκτώβρη 2008. Με φόντο το φωτογραφικό υλικό ο καπετάν Ερμής (Βασίλης Πριόβολος),

ήταν ο κεντρικός ομιλητής  και μας συγκίνησε όλους με τον μαχητικό του πνεύμα και την αναδρομή του στα γεγονότα της εποχής εκείνης.

Το φωτογραφικό υλικό και προπαντός τα πρωτόγνωρα ντοκουμέντα που παρουσίασε ο εν λόγω σύλλογος με DVD μας άφησαν εμβρόντητους.

Οι ίδιος σύλλογος πρωτοστάτησε και έτσι στις 28 Οκτώβρη στήθηκαν δυο μνημεία στην Πάτρα και με την συμμετοχή του Δήμου Πατρέων. Ένα στην Οδό Γούναρη και Κανακάρη (κοντά στο Πάνθεον) και ένα στην Αγγλικανική Εκκλησία,

όπου έπεσαν οι πρώτες βόμβες από την Ιταλική αεροπορία ξημερώνοντας η 28^η Οκτωβρίου 1940 στην Πάτρα.

Οι εκδηλώσεις και τα σύμβολα αυτά όχι μόνο δεν μας επιτρέπουν να ξεχαστούμε, αλλά είναι και οδοδείκτες για τα νέα ΟΧΙ μπροστά στον νεοκαπιταλιστικό και  κοσμοπολίτικο άοσμο και άγευστο πολιτισμικό του χυλό, που «ξεχύλωσε» ιδεολογικά, με την βαθιά δομική χρηματοπιστωτική τους κρίση.

Esta freguesia está a ser servida por distribuidor rural talvez temporariamente, como há muito se desejava, não só pela seriedade de que já tem dado provas, mas também pela sua educação e outros predicados apreciáveis. Oxalá ele fique definitivamente no lugar que com tanto zelo está a ocupar.

 - Casou-se há dias o nosso conterrâneo sr. Bernardino José Fonseca, com uma menina da Póvoa de Varzim. Embora tarde, enviamos-lhe os nossos parabéns.

- A Festa ao Coração de Jesus, que todos os anos se costuma realizar nesta freguesia, foi adiada, por motivos justos, para o mês de Novembro.

- Embarcou há dias, para Pernambuco, o nosso conterrâneo sr. António Ferreira Boucinha. Que seja muito feliz, são os nossos votos.

- Na próxima quinta-feira haverá missa, segundo o costume de São Mamede, em Casal Pedro, outrora Matriz desta freguesia. Consta que um sacerdote ali celebrará missa durante alguns meses, o que representa uma grande comodidade para o povo daquele populoso lugar.

- Informam-nos que este ano se realizará na capela da Senhora da Graça e em homenagem a Santa Luzia uma linda festa com bazar e música, como nos anos anteriores.

- Também nos informaram que no próximo mês de Setembro se realiza no lugar de Ponte d´Ave, na capelinha ali erecta, a festa em honra de N. S. da Ajuda, outrora de grande nomeada. - C.

αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών Χρύσανθος Φιλιππίδης

Με την κατάρρευση του μετώπου, επακολούθησε η ξενική κατοχή και η αντίσταση συνάμα του περήφανου λαού μας. Τότε ακούστηκε και το άλλο όχι, το οποίο διεκήρυξε επισήμως ο Κομοτηναίος αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών Χρύσανθος Φιλιππίδης (1938-1941), ο από Τραπεζούντος, ο οποίος ευθαρσώς αρνήθηκε να συμμετάσχει στην συμβολική παράδοση της πόλεως των Αθηνών και εδήλωσε με παρρησία ότι: «Ο αρχηγός της Εκκλησίας δεν παραδίδει την πρωτεύουσα της πατρίδας του εις ουδένα ξένον. Ο αρχηγός της Εκκλησίας ένα καθήκον έχει: να φροντίσει διά την απελευθέρωσιν αυτής».

Όταν επίσης εζητήθη από τον ίδιο να ορκίσει την πρώτη κατοχική κυβέρνηση Τσολάκογλου, ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Χρύσανθος και πάλι αρνήθηκε, λέγοντας ότι: «Ο αρχηγός της Εκκλησίας δεν δύναται να ορκίσει κυβέρνηση σχηματιζόμενη υπό την διοίκηση του εχθρού της πατρίδος».
Αλλά και στον Γερμανό στρατάρχη των κατοχικών δυνάμεων στην Ελλάδα Φον Στούμε, τον οποίο εδέχθη ως επισκέπτη στην Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή, «ορθός, ατάραχος και γαλήνιος με ψυχρό και ανέκφραστο ύφος», έδειξε την έντονη δυσφορία του για την υπό των ναζιστικών στρατευμάτων κατάληψη της Ελλάδος. Όταν ο στρατάρχης του είπε: «Ο γερμανικός στρατός δεν έφθασε με εχθρικές διαθέσεις», ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Χρύσανθος του απήντησε άφοβα και αυστηρά: «Κύριε στρατάρχα, πρωτίστως ο στρατός σας εισέβαλε σε έναν τόπον του οποίου ο λαός αγωνίσθηκε με πραγματική πίστη για την ελευθερία του… και εξακολουθεί πάντοτε να πιστεύει στα ιδανικά του. Η Ελλαδική Εκκλησία ευρέθη πάντοτε στο πλευρό του ελληνικού λαού στους αγώνες του… και να είσθε βέβαιοι ότι δεν θα λείψει να πράξει το καθήκον της και κατά την κρίσιμη αυτή περίσταση».

Από δε τον Ιούλιο του 1941 νέος αρχιεπίσκοπος εξελέγη ο από Κορίνθου Δαμασκηνός Παπανδρέου

Ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός Παπανδρέου εξώφυλλο στο ΤΙΜΕ

(1941-1949). Ο Χρύσανθος έκτοτε ιδιώτευε, αλλά και εφησυχάζων ενίσχυε κάθε πατριωτική δράση. Ο γνωστός ως «ασύρματος του Δεσπότη» στην κατοχή εκρύπτετο και λειτουργούσε στην κατοικία του, επί της οδού Σουμελά στην Κυψέλη.
Ο αοίδιμος αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών και μετέπειτα αντιβασιλεύς της Ελλάδος Δαμασκηνός Παπανδρέου (1891-1949) κατά τη διάρκεια της γερμανικής κατοχής και σε διάφορες περιπτώσεις εκφώνησε λόγους και έδωσε τις πρέπουσες απαντήσεις στις προκλητικές και απειλητικές υποδείξεις των κατακτητών και των προδοτών συνεργατών τους. Αυτά τα ιστορικά ντοκουμέντα δημοσιεύουμε στο παρόν επετειακό άρθρο μας.

Η γερμανική κατοχή ανέδειξε το μέγεθος της ψυχικής δυνάμεως και της γενναιότητος του αρχιεπισκόπου Δαμασκηνού. Όταν δηλαδή οι Γερμανοί εζήτησαν να επιστρατευτούν Έλληνες πολίτες για να σταλούν στο ρωσικό μέτωπο, ο Δαμασκηνός αντέδρασε με όλη του τη δύναμη για να αποφύγει η χώρα την εθνική αυτή συμφορά. Είχε κατηγορήσει ευθέως και απροκάλυπτα τους Γερμανούς κατακτητές από τον άμβωνα πολλές φορές, με αποτέλεσμα ο κατοχικός πρωθυπουργός Γ. Τσολάκογλου να τον απειλήσει λέγοντάς του: «Μακαριώτατε, προσέχετε μήπως οι Γερμανοί σας τουφεκίσουν» και ο Δαμασκηνός με το γνώριμο ύφος του απήντησε: «Οι στρατηγοί τουφεκίζονται, οι αρχιερείς απαγχονίζονται και είμαι έτοιμος προς τούτο».
Όσες φορές πάλι η γερμανική διοίκηση ζητούσε κατάσταση με τα ονόματα των ομήρων, ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός έγραφε πρώτο το όνομά του στην κατάσταση. Έτσι οι Γερμανοί ματαίωναν την εκτέλεση των Ελλήνων αγωνιστών. Όταν κατά την διάρκεια της γερμανικής κατοχής επεχείρησε ο εχθρός να τον πείσει και να τον εκφοβίσει λέγοντάς του, ότι υπάρχει και ο βίαιος θάνατος, ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός απαντούσε με την φράση του αγωνιστή Κανάρη «Δαμασκηνέ, είσαι έτοιμος να πεθάνεις». Άφωνοι έμεναν κάθε φορά οι Γερμανοί.

Ήταν οι αρχές του έτους 1942, όταν οι στερήσεις και η πείνα με σύμμαχο τον βαρύτατο χειμώνα αποδεκάτιζαν τον ελληνικό λαό και κυρίως στα μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα της χώρας (Αθήνα, Πειραιά, κ.ά.). Και τότε ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός δεν παρέμεινε άπραγος ενώπιον του πόνου και του αφανισμού του ελληνικού λαού και έστειλε στον πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας Χριστόφορο το παρακάτω τηλεγράφημα: «Ελληνικός λαός αποθνήσκει εκ πείνης. Ελληνική φυλή εξολοθρεύεται. Ποιούμεθα έκκλησιν και ικετεύομεν εκ βαθέων ψυχής ευρεθή τρόπος σταλούν οπωσδήποτε τρόφιμα, πάση θυσία. Θέτομεν διάθεσιν υμών άπασαν περιουσίαν Εκκλησίας Ελλάδος, άμφια ιερέων, αρχιερέων και τιμαλφή ναών και μονών. + ο Αθηνών Δαμασκηνός».

Damaskinos - Scombie

Μοναδικό ντοκουμέντο της γενναιότητος του αρχιεπισκόπου Δαμασκηνού είναι ο λόγος που εξεφώνησε κατά την κηδεία του μεγάλου μας ποιητού Κωστή Παλαμά (1943), για την απώλεια του οποίου είπε: «Πενθεί η Ελλάς το μεγάλο της τέκνο. Μέσα στα δάκρυα και τους στεναγμούς της ξενικής κατοχής αποχαιρετά τον Κωστή Παλαμά, τον μεγάλο της ποιητή, που την έψαλλε στους στίχους του με λόγια προφητικά, δυνατά, αληθινά, λόγια που συγκλονίζουν βαθειά την ψυχή και μεταρσιώνουν και καλύπτουν την ιστορία αιώνων μακρών».
Την Μεγάλη Παρασκευή του 1943 και κατά την ακολουθία της αποκαθηλώσεως ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός με αφορμή τις πολλές, μεγάλες και τρομακτικές δοκιμασίες του ελληνικού λαού και ενώπιων των μυστικών πρακτόρων των κατακτητών είπε τα ακόλουθα:

«Σήμερον… ο καθένας μας φέρει τον σταυρό της δοκιμασίας του. Ο καθένας μας προχωρεί με βήμα βραδύ προς το δικό του Γολγοθά μέσα από πίκρες και θλίψεις. Οι πάντες υφιστάμεθα δεινά και στερήσεις και λύπες πολλές. Καθημερινώς πίνουμε το ποτήριο της οδύνης.
Στο μέσον όμως της μεγάλης δοκιμασίας αντλούμε παρηγορία και ανακούφιση, ενθυμούμενοι και παρακολουθούντες την αγωνία του Λυτρωτού μέχρι της Αναστάσεώς του, η οποία επισφραγίζει την νίκην του επί των δυνάμεων του κακού και του σκότους.
Παρηγορούμεθα και εγκαρτερούμε. Εγκαρτερούμε και ελπίζουμε. Ελπίζουμε και πιστεύουμε. Πιστεύουμε στην ημέρα της δικαιώσεως, στην λαμπροφόρο ημέρα της Αναστάσεως, στην απαλλαγή της πατρίδος μας από τα δεσμά της δουλείας του αλλοτρίου. Πιστεύουμε στην μεγάλη πανήγυρι της σωτηρίας.
Διερχόμεθα σήμερα και εμείς οι Έλληνες ορθόδοξοι χριστιανοί την τραγωδία του πάθους, με μόνη την προστασία του Παναγάθου Θεού. Στερούμεθα και σιωπούμε. Αδικούμεθα και εγκαρτερούμε. Δεν είμεθα κύριοι στον οίκο μας και υπομένουμε, ευρισκόμενοι υπό το πέλμα κατακτητών. Ευτυχώς, ούτε ο πόνος, ούτε οι στερήσεις κάμπτουν το θάρρος μας, ούτε και είναι δυνατόν να μας απομακρύνουν από την γραμμή του καθήκοντός μας. Και αν για μία στιγμή αποκαρδιωμένοι αναφωνήσουμε: «Πάτερ, ει δυνατόν παρελθέτω αφ’ ημών το ποτήριον τούτο», το πνεύμα της εγκαρτερήσεως και των θυσιών ανακτά πάνω μας την κυριαρχία του.
Διότι δεν είναι δυνατόν, δεν έχουμε το δικαίωμα να διαψεύσουμε την παράδοση τόσων αιώνων, παράδοση εθνική και χριστιανική, και να λιποψυχήσουμε στο μέσον του δρόμου. Αδελφοί Έλληνες, τέκνα της Εκκλησίας του Χριστού και της Ελλάδος… τα βαρειά και σκοτεινά νέφη, που καλύπτουν τον ουρανό της πατρίδος, συντόμως θα διαλυθούν και θα διασκορπιστούν και θα λάμψει πάλι ο ζωογόνος ήλιος της ελευθερίας».

Όταν τον Γενάρη του 1944 εκτέλεσαν πολλούς φυλακισμένους Έλληνες και δεν έδιδαν στους συγγενείς τους τα ονόματα των νεκρών, ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός επεσκέφθη την ανώτατη στρατιωτική γερμανική διοίκηση και μίλησε με σκληρή γλώσσα στους κατακτητές: «Εκτελέσατε τόσους Έλληνες πατριώτες, δεν καλέσατε ιερείς να εξομολογήσουν και να κοινωνήσουν τους μάρτυρες, στερώντας τους ακόμη και αυτή την ύστατη παρηγοριά της θρησκείας μας. Απαιτώ να μου δώσετε τα ονόματα των εκτελεσθέντων και να παύσει η αγωνία των πολλών άλλων χιλιάδων συγγενών των Ελλήνων, που έχετε φυλακισμένους και οι συγγενείς των θυμάτων, πατέρες, μητέρες, παιδιά, σύζυγοι, φίλοι και αγαπημένοι, να εκδηλώσουν τον σπαραγμό και τον πόνο τους, να υψώσουν ένα σταυρό με το όνομά τους στο μνήμα τους…».
Οι Γερμανοί επέμεναν στην άρνησή τους να δώσουν τα ονόματα των εκτελεσθέντων και τότε ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Δαμασκηνός τους έστειλε το εξής μήνυμα: «Θα προβώ στην εκσκαφή των νεκρών, για να αναγνωρισθούν οι εκτελεσθέντες και, αν νομίζετε, ας επιχειρήσετε να με εμποδίσετε». Τελικώς ο Δαμασκηνός έλαβε και τα ονόματα και τους εκτελεσθέντες νεκρούς.
Τέλος, τον Μάϊο του 1944, όταν είχε αρχίσει η κάμψη της Γερμανίας, ένας ανώτερος Γερμανός αξιωματικός επεσκέφθη στην οικία του τον αρχιεπίσκοπο Δαμασκηνό, ο οποίος τις ημέρες εκείνες ήταν ασθενής και κλινήρης. Ο αξιωματικός μετέφερε στον αρχιεπίσκοπο την εντολή του ιδίου του Χίτλερ ότι έπρεπε να τον προστατεύσουν και να τον μεταφέρουν στην Γερμανία για ασφάλεια, λέγοντάς του: «Μακαριώτατε, παρακαλείσθε συνεπώς, να ετοιμασθείτε». Ο δε αρχιεπίσκοπος, αν και ασθενής, απάντησε ατάραχος και με αυστηρό ύφος: «Ευχαριστώ για τα ενδιαφέρον σας, αλλά δεν πρόκειται ποτέ να εγκαταλείψω την πατρίδα μου επ’ ουδενί λόγω. Εάν επιμένετε, μπορείτε να με μετακινήσετε, αλλά μόνον νεκρόν».
Αυτός υπήρξε ο εθνικός και θρησκευτικός γίγαντας της Ελλάδος, ο αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών Δαμασκηνός Παπανδρέου. Μετά την απελευθέρωση της Ελλάδος έγινε αντιβασιλεύς της Ελλάδος και εκοιμήθη στις 20 Μαΐου 1949, σε ηλικία μόλις 58 ετών.
